Overall, Planta Cocina is a standout among DC restaurants and more so among DC plant-based restaurants. The majority of the food was absolutely divine, but there were some misses. Thankfully, my party of 6 had a large sampling, so I feel like I got to experience the range of Planta. In order from my most to least favorite:
- 1,000 layer crispy potatoes, 10/10 (who knew potatoes could taste so good?)
- Unagi eggplant nigiri, 10/10 (a sweet and slimy perfection)
- Queso fundido, 10/10 (chips, crudite, and queso were divine)
- Lettuce wraps, 10/10 (scrumptious tofu mushroom crumble that tasted meaty enough for the omnivores in our group)
- Bang bang broccoli, 9/10 (deliciously crisp and saucy, but too much sauce in some occasional bites)
- Crispy mushroom hand roll 9/10 (perfectly crunchy and savory hand roll, albeit a bit on the small side)
- Guajillo crab cake 8/10 (crispy, tasty, but not as crabby as I had hoped)
- Crispy gyoza 6/10 (it was crispy and it was gyoza, but beware--it's jam-packed with spinach, arguably too much so)
- Udon noodles 6/10 (the noodles and sauce were good separately, but the sauce tasted more like an alfredo... it just tasted off with udon, but I bet it would be good with pasta)
- Handheld Caesar cups 5/10 (there is such a thing as too much lettuce in a lettuce cup)
