Detroit People’s Food Co-op is plotting a 2024 opening, the return of Planted Detroit salads, and more local food news | Eater Detroit

"An Islandview indoor hydroponics operation that ceased normal operations in August 2023 citing unsustainable operating costs but has since pivoted to enable a partial comeback: it is taking online orders for salad bundles (five or more) across metro Detroit and plans to have its boxed salads available inside local Meijer stores later this year. To resume retail distribution, the operation is partnering with a Lipari Foods subsidiary to assemble salads, with several regional companies handling distribution and toppings/dressings, local delivery handled by a third party, and greens continuing to be grown at the Islandview facility; some of the roughly 40 workers laid off last summer have been rehired. Before the pandemic, the business focused primarily on supplying restaurants with micro-greens." - Serena Maria Daniels

Here are the saddest Detroit restaurant closures of 2023, according to Detroit media experts | Eater Detroit

"It wasn’t a restaurant but when eastside Detroit indoor farm Planted Detroit abruptly closed, I was crushed — buying their salad mixes and greens at Eastern Market or Dearborn Farmer’s Market was a weekend ritual; their greens were the best and freshest being grown right in Detroit, they had great collaborations with local chefs like Chef Ederique Goudia’s Louisiana-inspired Paradise Valley Salad, and I was heartbroken when I went to Rivertown Market expecting their Belle Isle salad and found it gone." - Serena Maria Daniels

How Hydroponic Microgreen Farm Planted Detroit Pivoted During the Pandemic | Eater Detroit

"An indoor vertical hydroponic Controlled Environment Agriculture farm in Islandview that originally supplied local farm-to-table restaurants with baby greens and micro basil pivoted during COVID-19 from wholesale distribution to direct-to-consumer retail. By producing prepped salad and meal kits sold through its website and working with private chefs and caterers like Thyme & Honey, the operation maintained revenue on par with pre-pandemic levels despite operating in reduced space. The facility—about 22,000 square feet with plans for two additional large grow rooms—focuses on three product lines (baby greens, herbs, and microgreens) and runs under strict sanitation protocols with filtered air and water and staff wearing protective gear. Partnerships with Eastern Market and local dressing maker Drench have helped move salad kits into the community, and management emphasizes job preservation, workforce training (from at-home hydroponics to commercial-scale growing), and expanding staff as capacity grows." - Eater

Google
Planted Detroit has been a staple in our fridge for the past 2 years. The salads and greens are so vibrant and last so much longer than any other salad or greens I have bought from the store. All four of my kids ages 5-10 eat them weekly and love them as well! Our favorites are Sweet & Savory and the Creamy Pistachio. The staff is also so responsive when I have needed help with my online account. Definitely a local Detroit small business to support!

Google
Planted Detroit salads delivered to your door is such a game changer. Every salad is incredibly fresh. I love that I can easily pause my orders when I’m out of town, and the new seasonal salads are always so good. The bowls are perfectly packaged for grab-and-go and make eating healthy on the go easy.

Google
Planted Detroit is a remarkable urban farm that has redefined freshness and quality in the local produce scene. Their commitment to sustainable, pesticide-free, and herbicide-free farming practices is evident in every product they offer. I recently had the pleasure of trying their salad bowls, and they were nothing short of exceptional. The Protein Salad Bowl was a delightful medley of crisp greens and flavorful toppings, providing a satisfying and nutritious meal. The Blueberry Walnut Salad was a harmonious blend of sweet and savory, with the freshness of the ingredients elevating the entire experience. Their microgreens and edible flowers are equally impressive, adding vibrant colors and flavors to dishes. The purple sweet potatoes we received were a standout—fresh, delicious, and a testament to Planted Detroit’s dedication to quality. Beyond their products, Planted Detroit’s mission to fight food insecurity and promote education about vertical farming is commendable. Their partnerships with community organizations and schools demonstrate a genuine commitment to making a positive impact in Detroit. I wholeheartedly recommend Planted Detroit to anyone seeking fresh, high-quality produce. Their innovative approach to urban farming and unwavering dedication to sustainability set them apart as a true gem in our community.

Google
I have been with Planted Detroit for several years. The salads are delicious and are a complete meal for me. I enjoy the variety they offer along with great add-ons and attribute my ten lb weight lost to having these delivered to my home.

Google
I had the pleasure of visiting the facility. It was amazing to see how much healthy food can be grown in such a small footprint. I had their Pearled Couscous salad bowl and it far exceeded my expectation.

Google
Wow these salads are really fresh and delicious! The quality is much fresher than store bought salads and I love that they deliver but you don't need to commit weekly if you don't want to. I would highly recommend ordering!

Google
Gonna eat it because some good ingredients in here and paid for it…. But the golden sesame salad bowl came with green peas that are artificially colored with yellow and blue 1and it is the only vegan bowl they offer.

Yelp
Planted shares the most delicious salad blends right to your door in Detroit and metro-Detroit. Their prepared salads are named after neighborhoods around the city. Each has a base of its own blend of salad greens with a sidecar trio of add ons and a round of salad dressing. i am particularly fond of the Morningside's blend of fine greens including pak choi and a variety of micros. They also sell salad blends and micro greens to make your own creations at home. The quality and packing of all the greens is high and allows for a longer-lasting product. Locals can order for immediate delivery during the week or plan ahead. Most of the city is covered by daily delivery service, while some of the further out suburbs have specific day-of-week schedules. The website is easy to navigate, too. I'm happy to have this local salad delivery business in range for regular delivery.

Yelp
This was an unknown gem that I am happy to now know about. They grow all micro greens inside and the other ingredients are locally sourced. We had the opportunity to take a tour of the facility and every single precaution is taken to maintain the cleanliness. It was so fresh and tasty. I was completely amazed and look forward to ordering from them in the future.

Yelp
YUM! I am hooked! I got the salad bundle (5 for $55) and loved them all. My favorite was is the southwest but really all were great. Will definitely be ordering again next week.

Yelp
We've been getting these salads at work and they are amazing. I am NOT a salad person. I'm a cheeseburger and pizza guy, but I'm trying to be a healthy and responsible adult, and these salads are the best I've ever had. I eat one of these and it satisfies my savory and fullness needs.
