Vegan Cheese and Dessert Bar Planthropie Opens on February 22 in Birmingham | Eater Detroit

"Opening February 22 in Birmingham at 135 Pierce St., the region’s first all-vegan cheese and dessert bar offers showstopping cakes and treats with an entirely vegan, gluten-free, and soy-free menu made primarily from raw, organic, fair-trade ingredients. Owner Rua Francis Oshana developed the recipes after discovering her son’s dairy allergy and, after pop-ups (including a sold-out five-course dessert at Chef’s Table in the Detroit Foundation Hotel) and growing wholesale demand, decided to open a storefront that’s meant to be an entire experience. The counter-service shop seats around 20 (café seating, booths, and standing tables) and centers on a cultured cashew cream used in cheesecakes with lightly toasted almond crust and chocolate truffles, along with cheeses like a garlic noir made with sweet black garlic and cashews and a white truffle cashew cheese; it will offer cheese plates and dessert plates on weekdays, expanded items like macaroni and cheese and chef-selected “tours” Friday through Sunday, and a dry bar with non-alcoholic wines." - Brenna Houck

Rua is the sweetest and went out of her way to help us get our order in time for a birthday surprise. The presentation was beautiful and all of the treats were delicious. You couldn't tell they were vegan! I can't recommend this shop enough!

Planthropie is incredible! In addition to their food being gluten, dairy, soy, and refined sugar free, it is vegan, organic, and raw. More importantly, it is the best tasting dessert and cheese I have ever had. I am not vegan, but Planthropie's desserts are better than the "real" thing. This place is wonderful for foodies, people who have food sensitivities, or anyone who cares about the quality of their food. Additionally, Rua's cake design is absolutely breathtaking. Take a look below at the gorgeous cake she made for me, and also some shots of cheeses are other desserts. Their design aesthetic both in the space and the food is beautiful. The whole business is run with such great care and they have become my favorite dessert place!

Vegan café with desserts and cheese! They use cashew and dates to naturally sweeten everything. You could really taste the date flavor in the tiramisu cake but it was more subtle in the snickers/ almond chocolate one. Despite everything looking nice I didn’t like it enough to return. Side note: bathroom was clean and decorated in a cute “let me take a selfie” manner.

Beautiful place! We got the raspberry chocolate cheesecake and it was delicious. Not overly sweet and more of a dark chocolate. We’ll definitely visit again and ring others as well

Walked in here after having brunch at TOAST, because it looked like a cute little pastry shop. While an employee helped explain to us what everything was, we realized it was a healthy/plant/vegan type of pastry shop but the girls were so helpful and cute we decided to try it and were surprisingly blown away. Nothing tasted like it was sugar free (they use dates/honey/etc as sweetners). The brownie truffles were my favorite! Melt in your mouth! The cheesecake was also very delicious, the crust had greattt flavor. Coffee was good, tasted like chocolate milk. If you’re sensitive to gluten or are vegan, or NONE—this is a really cute pastry shop worth entering. TRY THE BROWNIE TRUFFLES—they’re hard to walk away from!

Awesome Decor! They have an amazing selection of healthy vegan cakes and mini desserts . They use cashews, dates and pistachios. The owner was very kind and explain the different options and flavors. Their jasmine tea is also phenomenal!

Omg!! Super cute plant based shop. Delicious treats and things. They also offer a wine selection. I went for my son a cake for his birthday. He's a strict vegetarian and was disappointed they didn't have big cakes so I got him 4 tiny treats. I'm pleased.

I love this place! The aesthetics are on point! Very upscale and chic with a taste of bougie. The space is small, yet very welcoming. The ingredients are clean and no refined sugar, which makes indulging here guilt-free for me! I fell in love with their hot cocoa because it is super rich and not too sweet! All of the vegan cheesecakes that I've tried are delicious! The brownie truffle is a MUST TRY as well!
