"The foggy beaches of Marin County may be a far cry from the sand and surf of Baja, but this lively spot keeps the vacation vibe alive with margaritas, mezcal and madly delicious Mexican cooking. And while Playa feels upmarket with its colorful tiles, blown-glass lights and walls of windows, its food is wonderfully authentic. The menu makes for tough choices: opt for the outstanding al pastor tacos layered with sweet-spicy caramelized pineapple salsa, or the crispy empanadas stuffed with chorizo, currants and green olives, drizzled with chimichurri. Whether you choose a cocktail and a mushroom-squash blossom quesadilla at the bar or bowls of chips and queso fundido with a big group on the sunny back patio, good times are guaranteed." - Michelin Inspector

"While a restaurant exactly like Flores might not exist in Marin County, there are some higher end Mexican restaurants excelling in the area, including Playa and Parranga in Mill Valley and Copita Tequileria y Comida in Sausalito. This was honestly one of the best dining experiences I've had in months. We had the Guacamole y Totopos, Pork and Chicharron Asian Pear Tacos, and Birria Tacos. The chips were super crunchy, salty, and definitely homemade. The guacamole was super tasty, I wish there was more of it. haha. The pork tacos were good, but they needed a bit of salsa. They were next level after putting some Salsa Verde one them. The birria tacos were amazing. Basically mini quesadillas. The dipping broth was of course great too. When my tacos were gone, I drank the whole bowl. Our server brought us a complimentary dessert which was amazing. It was ice cream with chocolate, nuts, basil, and what I think was an oil. Our service was the highlight. Luis A was kind, complimentary, and personable. The dude just made our whole night. He was there when we needed him, and went out of his way to take care of us and talk with us. He told us about his son and his wife, and him giving us free dessert was more than nice of him. He made the night very special for us and was just amazing! I watched him and the other servers moving quickly to take care of guests and even use a knife to get stuff out from in between the wood planks in the table while cleaning up. The atmosphere was great. Exposed brick, lots of windows with natural light, pretty lights, a well-stocked bar, clean and professional-looking staff. Even their bathrooms were nice. We had such a good time. We will be back again!

Great place to eat in downtown Mill Valley with plenty of seating. Service was good and food was delicious. Tried the Birria Tacos. The place seems popular with the locals and was packed on a Thursday night.

Google
Great restaurant. Only recently heard about it and tried it. I have nothing bad to say about the place - food was great. We didn’t have a single dish that I’d say was a miss. Service was what you’d expect for a nice restaurant. Atmosphere was also great. We sat at an out door patio that was mostly covered, but allowed for dogs. Indoor section was also bright and airy, with a nice modern aesthetic. The drink menu was also really great, with a strong selection of cocktails. This might just be my favorite restaurant right now in Mill Valley. Though, I’m fairness, I haven’t been to that many restaurants there. I’d definitely return.

Google
One of my favorite places in Mill Valley - stellar food with amazing atmosphere. We had the guac and it is the perfect blend of flavor. Baja Fish and Camarones tacos are *chef’s kiss*. The patio is a slice of absolute heaven.

Google
This place is classy. Not just are their interiors and decor classy. But their food and drinks are also CLASSY. Great and fresh food. :) We took Brussels sprouts, nachos and vegetarian tacos. The gauc and sauces they give with the chips were fresh. So were the chips. I was super impressed with their vegetarian tacos as they were unusually good compared to other places. Their outdoor seating is especially such a charm on a bright summer day. I wish I could spend my whole afternoon here with more food and drinks. But, it's definitely a great place to come with your friends.

Yelp
TLDR: Great space for large groups and casual eats that are taken up a notch. Nothing blew me away but everything was pretty good. Loved that everything from the perfectly fried tortilla chips to the piping hot cookie platter dessert was made fresh right before being brought out. ------ FOOD: 1. Queso (5/5) - The best thing of the night! Creamy, packed with flavor, and went perfectly with their chips I don't think this dish comes with chips itself) 2. Guac and Chips (5/5) - Guac has a really great acidity. Pairs really well with the tortilla chips (this DOES come with chips). I'd skip the trio of salsas personally and just get this. 3. Tres Leches Cake (4.5/5) - Has great, toasted marshmallow fluff on top the cake slice and I absolutely loved the nuts and large chocolate+toffee bits sprinkled around the plate. I wish the cake had more tres leches. 4. Suadero Taco (Brisket) (4/5) - an order of tacos is just 1 taco, but this taco was loaded up with brisket. The brisket was pretty good but there was so much that I couldn't easily hold the taco to eat. The taste of brisket was also the only thing I could really taste so the flavor was pretty one-note. 5. Enchiladas de Mole Negro (4/5) - just had a bite but this was solid. The mole was great. Corn tortilla was probably thicker than I would have preferred personally. 6. Warm cookies and milk (4/5) - these came out PIPING hot and I loved the concept with a glass of milk. It smelled heavenly but I wasn't the biggest fan of the cookies themselves, though at least more buttery than overly sweet. The milk definitely improved the cookies. Hard to share this dessert with the milk because the glass doesn't allow for dipping. 7. Ahi tostadas (3/5) - comes with three smaller tostadas bs one big one. Somehow these didn't taste like anything, even with large dollops of chili crisp on top 8. Crudo (3/5) - I didn't love it 9. Ceviche (3/5) - too fishy for me ------ SERVICE: We were a large group so hard to say normally. They were a bit slow at first but that's totally understandable. There were quite a few times when we asked for things that never arrived but again, I know it's hard with a bigger group. ------ AMBIANCE / ENVIRONMENT: I loved the space! Cozy and lovely inside, plus a great heated and enclosed area in the back with long tables that can accommodate very large groups. The have lots of powerful space heaters and fire pits back here which help a lot, but beware they have a back door that's open to the outside and still lets in a lot of cold air to be prepared for if you sit by it.

Yelp
Came for lunch with a friend on a Friday right when they opened. After a hike around Old Mill Park with my dog, we made our way downtown to Playa. Greeted immediately and taken to the covered back patio which was dog friendly. Server came quickly and took our drink orders and answered questions. My friend is mainly a pescatarian so the many fish based options were a plus. We decided to share the himachi starter with habanero ash. There were four small pieces of fresh fish with small pieces of melon, cucumber, some lime juice and olive oil dusted with the ash. Very high quality ingredients made for a tasty dish and the ash gave a nice kick of heat that was subtle at first but creeped up a bit - you need to like heat if you get this. It wasn't crazy hot but was not mild. I mixed two tacos - the yellow tail and the al pastor. The al pastor had big chunks of pineapple that I didn't love, but the meat was tasty. The tortillas are house made so they were fresh and delicious. The yellowtail with salsa and crema was excellent. These are the small size tacos, but delicious and filling. Nice to have such a good quality restaurant that is dog friendly in Mill Valley. Would definitely return.

Yelp
It was good and excellent service. The food was tasty. Menu had changed so that was ok but a bit disappointing. Tostadas were small. Tacos are a single one. Bowls/ entrees the biggest Entrees. Desserts are ok but no more a few favorites.

Yelp
I can't believe I came here. Terrible service and WAYYYYY over priced for the mediocre food. It was bad enough to wait over 30 minutes for food dinner order during a slow evening, but to be charged for salsa and chips and not told because we were only given our Bar menus is ridiculous. Dried out chicken with watered down black beans. Again, worst food EVERRRR! I will never recommend this place and never visit again. I'm so embarrassed I asked friends to join me. If I knew I was going to throw away over $300 at this place, I would have thrown cash out my car door or donated my money to a homeless shelter. A horrible experience and go to El Paseo or the Corner. Don't waste your time here.

Cris W.

Yelp
The food is good, albeit overpriced. But the noise level is unacceptably loud. We could not carry on a conversation, tonite. And on top of it, the chef has to YELL out every order. It's ridiculous. If you don't hear well, or don't feel like yelling to talk, don't go.

Rachel H.

Yelp
It's time for an update to Playa Mill Valley. We are here regularly because the food, drinks and atmosphere are consistent, so much so that it's become a local favorite for our family. Our go-to orders include their various tacos (shrimp, pastor & veggie are good) chopped salad with vegetables and tortilla strips and steak added and their starters, particularly their ceviche, enchiladas, house made chips and queso fundido. They have a full bar, and their cocktails and food make for a good spot for connecting with friends. If you come Friday through Sunday, or for dinner be sure to make a reservation.

Yelp
On a solo adventure I decided to explore mill valley, and was looking for a good dinner spot. I grabbed a spot at the bar, and the bartenders were very attentive. The interior was colorful and bright with really beautiful light fixtures, and then they had a large semi outdoor seating area that was inviting. I ordered a lager and chips and guac to start. All arrived super quickly. The guac was excellent! I had two tacos for dinner, one Baja fish taco which was super fresh and delicious, and then a birria taco which was also delicious. I wish we had tacos this good where I live!

Katie M.

Yelp
We've been going to Playa for years and I'm disappointed to see they changed their menu with higher prices and smaller portions. For example I ordered the molcajete which is advertised as feeding 2-3 people for $45 and when it arrived it was just a normal sized entree too small for two adults to share as a full dinner...and we don't even eat that much. I wish the server suggested 1-2 small plates to go with it. Most items in the Marisco section are also small despite the pricing seeming like a full entree. Again, wish the server explained how much to order per person so it wasn't a surprise when the food came out so everyone didn't leave hungry. Overall their food is good but not incredible. I unfortunately don't see us continuing to be regularly given their new changes.

Pilates G.

Yelp
I have always been a fan of Playa, but this time around, meh...the food was mediocre. The ambiance is pretty good. But literally after eating at Elena's in West Portal, it's like impossible to like any Mexican place anymore. Food was just so not good this time.

Yelp
I recently dined at Playa in Mill Valley, CA, and had a fantastic experience. I love Mill Valley, and this visit only reinforced that sentiment. We were seated in a lovely enclosed patio, which provided a cozy and comfortable atmosphere. The service was wonderful, attentive, and friendly. The food was absolutely yummy, making every bite enjoyable. This place was nice, and I would love to visit again.

Eric L.

Yelp
A Michelin-guide recommended Mexican spot... with some really good dishes (a divine tuna tostada) and a lot of dishes that are "Mexican for white people" dishes. The ambiance is incredible; it's exciting and lively and crowded, and in quiet Mill Valley, this is an exciting food destination. But the food was just average. Nothing inspired me too much (the chips were good, but a little crackly, and the salsa flights were jus fine, the brussels sprouts were over-sauced, and the tacos were adequate but a bit bland). I enjoyed my main (scallops) and my partner liked his dish, but it was too much food and not enough flavor overall. We skipped dessert. It's a great neighborhood spot, but it's not a destination.

Ola D.

Yelp
Exceeded all expectations. Food was delicious, presentation was stunning. Great restaurant decor, and our server - Gina was awesome!!! We will be back often.

Yelp
Mill Valley, Ca. Convivial and vibrant. That's what this place is. We happened to wander through here from the back entrance where we were parked, heading to the Paseo. We asked to hostess if we could get served without a reservation and she offered up two seats at the chefs counter immediately. This is the place to sit and watch the amazing show of their well oiled machine. From the prep to the various cooks and the manager, everyone knew exactly what to do. The manager attended to us personally as well as the waiter, Louis, who was really attentive and informative. He attended to us with alacrity and friendliness. BBQ short rib tacos were not to be had tonight but the birria tacos were to die for. I know $9 for a small taco is a bit much but in this case I wouldn't hesitate. House made blue corn tortillas with tender birria beef and a dipping consume. I had two and that was good enough so I could sample other wares. The mini ahi tostadas are yummy and the grilled poblano's are great. The place is huge and bustling with a party like vibe.

Yelp
Early dinner with friends, we were seated at shellacked picnic tables on the covered patio with fire pits already lit. Initially it was not too loud to converse (but got louder as Playa filled up). First things first, we needed cocktails! We tried the Kill Bill, the Bloody Fog and a glass of the albarino....all were good, but the favorite was the Bloody Fog. Equally appealing to the eye as well as the tastebuds, a beautiful blood orange color with a seafoam topping; the subtle heat of the arbol chile on the finish was appreciated. Well done Playa bartenders! We also enjoyed the guacamole sprinkled with pico de gallo, and chips with a salsa trio. The tomatillo verde and roasted tomato chipotle salsas were mild; the roasted habenero had more heat, but not overwhelming and a lovely golden color. Gotta say, the chips were perfect! Sometimes (at other places) they're too thick, other times too thin and break when you try to dip, but these were the epitome of chipness! It may be a small thing, but I think it enhances the salsa experience. Along with the guac & chips, we split the asparagus with marcona almonds; they were perfectly al denté with (not enough) mole bianco sauce! On to the mains: two of us ordered the enchilada trio plate. We also ordered ta few ala carte tacos: the mahi mahi, the camarones and the vegetarian. Everything was fresh and delicious, well done Playa chefs! We ordered another round of drinks instead of desserts. During the meal, our server let us know that there was was a delay in getting drinks; the bar was backed up owing to a private party at the far end of the patio area. Another Playa plus is that so much of the menu is gluten-free and alot is also dairy-free; props to Playa for their accommodations.

Lauren C.

Yelp
We made a reservation for 5 and the service was perfect. The server was funny and attentive. He even custom made me vegetarian tacos, upon request and they were absolutely delicious. I appreciate how they have many GF options too! The taste of the food was great. The ambiance was clean and beautiful. The only thing missing for me was that the portions are a bit small. 3 tacos to a plate would be my suggestion, but perhaps that's because I ordered a veggie taco so was still hungry after.

Gregg S.

Yelp
Playa was my favorite restaurant in mill Valley. Ate there tonight and the service was good, the margs really good but the menu had changed and it was no bueno. Gone are carnitas, tacos assortment and churros. The enchiladas I had were terrible. It's so overpriced now. I don't know what happened. But I'm very sad.

Linda R.

Yelp
We were back here recently (on a Thursday night), when in town for a show. We were very early and there was no crowd. Only a few tables in use. The host was not very friendly and the fact that we didn't have a reservation was an issue. We were offered the window table by the door, due to the lack of reservation. The whole time we were there the dining room and patio were 80-90% empty. Not sure why we got so much attitude. As we were traveling from the east bay and had no idea what time we would arrive, we felt a reservation was not the best option. Next time, I'll make one. Again the food was good. That's definitely not an issue. Our server was great and attentive.

Devon H.

Yelp
Omg this is by far the best restaurant in Mill valley!!! There tacos are so good!! I would recommend to anyone that wants amazing food

Tiffany V.

Yelp
Had to come back to Playa because their flauta's de Tinga were calling my name. Food was exceptional just as I expected. I had the watermelon agua fresca, HIGHLY recommend you try it. We had the salsa and guacamole with chips, the flautas, and drinks to start. Had fish tacos and birria tacos for the main dish. Everything flavorful, service impeccable, the restaurant is a vibe worth checking out. Only thing holding it back from 5 stars is the bench seating. Very rough for those with back problems and hip problems, and not many standard chairs in the restaurant. So know that a head of time.

Aida F.

Yelp
From the moment one walks in staff is welcoming & helpful. Our party was supposed to be eight, but we lost 2 folks & the host was on it; didn't stress & accommodated us beautiful. The wait staff was almost immediately over with water & taking drink orders: there were cocktails, beer & more cocktails. Then came the appetizers: there was chips & salsas - roasted tomato, tomatillo & habanero, habanero was tasty & hot! We also tried their quesadilla with 'huitladoche' - very yummy & lastly an order of Brussels sprouts, which I heard were also delicious. There was also a wild arugula salad served with apples & spiced pecans - wow was the arugula itself peppery. Onto the mains: there were at least 2 orders of grilled mahi-mahi, Baja fish, enchiladas with tomatillo sauce & one order with mole negro & the tortilla soup with chicken & avocado. Just about all the plates were clean, maybe 1 box for my enchilada I wasn't able to finish. The verde tomatillo sauce enchiladas was spicy & a tad hot for me, so I traded with my hubby for the ones done in dark mole. All the dishes were screaming good. Lastly DESSERT: we opted to try the churros served with chocolate & caramel sauces, & the tres leche cake, suffice to say not a bite was left. I liked that the churros came out pipping hot, the tres leche cake was on the small side, if you want a tiny dessert. The overall restaurant was loud, lots of hustling & bustling about; probably a great place to host a party.

Yelp
Recently stopped by here for lunch while visiting Muir Woods. Being a vegetarian was a bit disappointed since they did not have much or even 1 entree which was vegetarians. They offered to make side dishes vegetarian but was hoping to have something better. The ambience was really nice. They have outdoor and indoor seatings. Pets are allowed outdoor when on leash. Drink menu was well designed. Hoping to see few vegetarian options next time. 2 stars since we left without having lunch (or lack of vegetarian entree).

Jen D.

Yelp
I was looking for a good chicken mole enchilada dish when I found Playa and I'm so glad I found this restaurant! They create exceptional meals every time, without fail!! Note: we've only had the food delivered thus far (bi-weekly for the past months) and so I haven't yet eaten at the restaurant and so I'm unable to comment on that, but I would expect great service given the way the meals are packaged and delivered! Give it a try!!

Erin M.

Yelp
Wonderful food and service. Beautiful space. Had brunch there while watching the 49ers game.

Yelp
EVERYTHING was SUPER GOOD about the place! Great margaritas, appetizers, deserts and service! We had for drinks: flaca, margaritas and Modelo on top. Food: guacamole, salsa and chips, soul tortilla (delicious), esquire (corn), huevos rancheros (very good) chopped salad, tacos birrita (delicious), and for desert: churros and ice cream trio (super good), and horchatini. I wished I remember our table server's name. Super attentive and professional! Edited: his name is Sergio

Nadine F.

Yelp
The ambiance is great and lively. Heated area by the fire kept me warm all night. but the food portions are pretty small and overpriced. The Brussels sprouts blew me away though!

Nicole L.

Yelp
Five stars for the fun but bougie vibe Five stars for food flavor and presentation Three stars for price Three stars for service

Debbie B.

Yelp
We had dinner at the bar and it was such a great experience. We started with cocktails, mezcal margarita for me and house for hubby. While the guac and chips were pricey they were worth it. The chips tasted like "gourmet fritos" which is a high compliment in my book. But the star was the broccolini we had with our tacos. (We shared chicken and fish). Everything was delicious and tasted as though it was lovingly prepared for us. Already made our next reservation!

Lori N.

Yelp
3 Stars. Barely. The Good: The outdoor patio is pretty nice, as is the modern indoor seating. The tortillas are solid too. That's kind of where it ends for me. Food: For #14.00, the Carnitas Tacos came with two tacos. Problem is, at $7/per taco, outside of the tortillas, the carnitas were dry and really weren't much better than what you can get at a taqueria. The guacamole for $12.00 also anything to write home about, and the portion of guacamole probably equated to one avocado. Not only have prices increased, but the variety of menu items have decreased. Entrees range from $24-$32.00, which based on their descriptions aren't particularly unique or creative. I don't at all mind paying more for quality food, but food quality isn't commensurate with prices. Service: Another strike out. Service was perfunctory and not at all friendly. I've gotten friendlier service at gas stations. They weren't swamped or anything, so it wasn't like the waiter had more tables than he could handle. Not sure if the waiter was having an off day or service like this is just the norm here now. There's also a 3% "Living Wage" charge. I'm totally fine with restaurants doing whatever they need to do, but why not be 100% transparent and simply build it into the pricing?? I noticed quite a few people coming primarily for drinks. Maybe that's the thing to do here. Honestly, you can get much better food and better value at other places.

Coty F.

Yelp
We love going here we have been quite a few times and everything is always so perfect. It can be pricey but we just discovered their happy hour which is amazing. $3 tacos, $10 signature drinks. It's seriously the best... however you can only sit at the bar for the happy hour and there's only about 10 seats. We will keep coming back. Especially for their quesadilla, carne asada tacos and their margaritas!

Allie G.

Yelp
Playa was great for lunch with coworkers. We had made a reservation since we were a party of 7, but on Friday afternoon the place was fairly empty. Our group was seated in the indoor patio area, which was very well decorated with cool little fire pits. Our server was extremely helpful and energetic. I started with the Don Tito cocktail which was delicious - not too sweet, very fruity and refreshing. I also ordered the Veggie Quesadilla and added chicken to it, which was great. I ended up eating only half and taking the rest home, which made for awesome leftovers the next day. My coworkers all enjoyed their food, too, especially the veggie tacos and the chips & guac. Would come here again!

Rebecca C.

Yelp
Playa has been in my bookmarks for the longest time. A girlfriend and I spent the afternoon in downtown Mill Valley and stopped by to have a drink at the bar. They serve up some pretty looking and bold cocktails. There is a good selection of drinks to choose from. I saw a slushie listed on the menu and I found out they only offer it when it's warm out. I ended up getting the Circa 1903 and the bartender did the foam art in front of us which was neat. I will definitely be back to try their food and update this review after.

Garden Lover S.

Yelp
Great place to hang out consistently good food good cocktails friendly service nice looking interior.

Caitlyn W.

Yelp
I had an awesome experience at Playa this weekend. We were thankful that the restaurant was able to accommodate our change in reservation a few hours before we arrived. All of the staff was extremely nice, especially our server. The server suggested the Carne Asada plate, and I'm so glad that he did! It was very tender and delicious, and came with a nice amount of sides. My partner had the Carnitas plate, which he said was a little spicier but loved the taste. The server also remembered that we mentioned it was my partner's birthday, so he brought this wonderful dessert. Would recommend!

Henri T.

Yelp
absolutely delicious food. Great atmosphere, friendly and knowledgeable staff. Highly recommend the chips with three salsas! And the kill Bill Margarita. I've never gone wrong with anything on their menu. Indoor and outdoor dining. If you sit near the front of the restaurant, you can watch the whole town walk by. so fun! and yes, this is Mill Valley and you're going to pay the price to dine in this gorgeous town. And for the high quality of the food and employees. If you are looking for a very inexpensive pair of tacos, you might want to look elsewhere! :)

Jacky W.

Yelp
Amazing food! One of the best tortilla chips and guac at restaurants. Cocktails are also delicious. Service was very polite and friendly. Love the indoor, outdoor and semi outdoor setup for all kinds of weather and mood. Great place for hanging out with friends.

Zack B.

Yelp
The service was just wow. I went on May 29th in the evening and I was astounded by how helpful and amazing the staff was, in particular the staff member Natalia. She was always on top of everything we needed and her humor - combined with her immense knowledge of the restaurant and food - made our night enjoyable and memorable!

Jay A.

Yelp
Two tacos $18. Appealing decor and good service are only worth so much. Those two tacos are $8.00 in San Rafael. Nice place but I don't think it's worth the price, tacos were average - nothing special.

Namya M.

Yelp
Playa was a really nice vibe. The place was outdoors and weather amazing. Their food was good, Burgos rancheros specifically. I thought the shrimp tacos were a bit too heavy on peppers.

Althea A.

Yelp
First time there. Good to have a reservation. Beautiful enclosed patio dining as well-lots of families with kids though. Sat inside which was nice too. Plenty of food -good portions and nice and fresh. Great service too. We loved the enchiladas -very filling and chips and salsa. So good! Will revisit for sure.

Adam S.

Yelp
I've had lunch and dinner several times at Playa. The food is pretty good, but I like the energy and the atmosphere. I especially enjoy sitting at the bar. However, 2 days ago I had (fish) tacos, and while they were quite tasty, since the middle of that night I haven't been able to be out of site of the toilet, as I got a nasty case of food poisoning. Definitely no question that it was from that meal. I understand how that kind of thing can happen, but, alas, it's going to be a long time before I'll be able to eat that food again.

Shannon P.

Yelp
Playa was amazing! Definitely a busy and happening place in COVID. They are doing a great job social distancing the tables from one another. They have four separate eating areas (1 inside and 3 outside). Our food came quickly and hot. All of our servers were incredibly friendly and helpful. We ordered: -mezcal margaritas -guac & Chips -halibut ceviche -al pastor tacos (we asked for a 3rd and they easily accommodated this request) -enchiladas con camarones -carnitas plater Everything was delicious! Can't wait to come back again soon

Emma S.

Yelp
Playa wasn't my first thought for brunch, but I'm so glad it came up in my web search! Not only was the patio a beautiful space to spend the late morning with my girlfriend, close to the fire pit, the food was delish and creative and the service was attentive. My inquiry about fresh orange juice was countered with their Watermelon Agua Fresca, which was just as fresh and sweet as you'd want it to be. The server recommended the Huevos Benedictos and Enfrijoladas, both of which turned out to be solid offerings. My favorite were the Huevos Benedictos, though if you're looking for the tang of a traditional hollandaise sauce, these are a delicious, but different twist on that brunch staple. The carnitas were flavorful and I loved the sliver of red fresno pepper that leant a beautiful pop of both color and spice! The Enfrijoladas were my girlfriend's favorite. She loved the fluffy scrambled eggs wrapped in handmade tortillas. I salute them on the perfect amount of cilantro, bringing a brightness to the dish. For dessert, we tried their churros with Mezcal-Mexican Chocolate Sauce. Yum! They were crunchy with plenty of cinnamon and sugar coated on the outside, though creamily soft inside. The dipping sauce was not to be wasted either! (In fact, I might've used a splash in my coffee.) Altogether, a fun brunch option! I noticed the patio seems to be dog friendly, especially if you approach from their entrance off Sunnyside. Also, even though the website and reservation system said brunch started at 11:30, when I talked to the host, she offered us an 11 o'clock reservation, which worked so much better, since we both had to get to work later. Thanks, Playa! We'll be back!

Yelp
If you're looking for a chic, upscale Mexican restaurant in Mill Valley, Playa is your place. It was busy when we went for dinner, and parking was a bit challenging to find. We waited for about 20 minutes to be seated. Service was prompt, and there's a lot of outdoor seating (with heat lamps). The ambience is particularly lovely at night: think string lights, fire pits, a large balcony area. Playa is also doing a good job with Covid precautions: face masks are required and the tables are all distanced from each other. The food is on the pricier side, but that's unsurprising given the fancier feel. We ordered the salsa & house-made chips to share and I ordered a bowl of chicken tortilla soup and elote. The chips and salsa was delicious, as was the elote -- would definitely recommend! The tortilla soup was just fine, but nice for a cold day.

Yelp
First time here over the weekend. Loved the setting & the ambiance of the restaurant. Chips & salsa were amazing as well as the the agua fresca. My boyfriend loved the sangria & the slushy. Food was good. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
This place is happening! We made reservations for dinner for a group of 4 kids and 7 adults. We sat right away. The place is beautiful and busy. We ordered some drinks first. This bar has a lot of tequila varieties. I ordered a margarita and my family ordered a pisco sour and a sangria carafe. We then ordered chips and guacamole as well as 3 dips, which were 2 types of salsa and a cheese dip. We ordered the kale salad, ceviche and the sashimi appetizer. The drinks arrived besides my margarita. For whatever reason it took triple the time to get. The appetizers took about 10-15 minutes the guacamole was delicious with the chips and the dips were nice as well. Interestingly enough the salsa was not spicy but the cheese dip was but just a little spicy. The ceviche was really good. We tried to order it without cilantro, so the server brought it but forgot that cilantro is not just a garnish but also in it. Nonetheless, we ate it. The sashimi was fantastic!! We really liked the kale salad as well. For entrees, the kids ordered some things on the kids menu, I ordered the shrimp tacos, the rest of the table ordered the full chicken, Al pastor and the steak. The dishes were really stunning! I thought the shrimp was good but something about the sauce was a little too sweet. Nonetheless, I did finish it. My dad loved the Al pastor. It came work root vegetables that looked beautiful. My brother loved the chicken and the steak. All in all pretty good. The kids got a box with a little of everything, including a cookie. Lastly, we ordered dessert: cheese cake, chorro and flan. The chorro came with a chocolate dip and was fresh and delicious. The kids loved that! The cheese cake was also good and the flan was a little too sweet for me but all in all good. The decor itself of the place is cool and the service was ok. Definitely worth a try.

Yelp
I'm wondering if this place is under new management??? We have been regulars since they opened. We got takeout at least once a week all thru the pandemic to support them. The quality of the food has dropped dramatically. The prices have gone up dramatically. The menu has changed, the thick cut homemade chips have changed and taste packaged. We are SO bummed. We used to justify the $14 for tacos because they were excellent. Now they are $18 and very mediocre. Chips and guacamole used to come with salsa, and now it's all a la carte and when you buy the $12 guacamole and chips, you have to spend $6 more dollars to get a small trio of salsas. $18 for chips, guac and salsa?!?! The chopped salad has changed and it's now terrible. There is nothing for a vegetarian to eat in a restaurant serving cuisine that should offer plenty of vegetarian options. Just sad all around. We used to buy gift certificates for friends for birthdays. We certainly won't do that unless and until the food improves. And someone will have to convince me because I won't be ordering food here anymore. Fortunately, the drinks are still good, for now. Management, if you're listening, DO SOMETHING!!! Make Playa the great restaurant it used to be instead of the tourist trap it's becoming.
