Coffeehouse with espresso, pastries, books & community events

"Playground Coffee Shop serves a lot of purposes for its Bed-Stuy community. It’s somewhere for cool chefs to make cool sh*t to eat, and it's also a queer & POC-focused bookstore and the home of an independent online radio platform called Playground Radio. They’ll be hosting a block party this weekend to celebrate being all of those things for three years. Join them on Saturday from 2-8pm for music, food, and drinks. More info here." - neha talreja
"Food and fun is happening at Playground Coffee Shop this Thursday and Friday, when they kick off their monthly summer series Night in at Playground, featuring guest chef drop-ins and live entertainment. Chef Sammi Gay will be cooking up things like chicken in mushroom maple tea broth, elderflower apple roses, and other treats. Come by anytime from 6pm to 11pm to have a few drinks and enjoy live music and performances outside." - neha talreja
"This is a spot in Bed-Stuy with a bunch of wooden tables, and a nice leather couch in the back where you can attempt to not-awkwardly shift your body positioning so you’re facing each other while you talk. There’s a shelf area where you can buy books as well as coffee, and every purchase helps fund events like open mics and yoga classes. Try not to say outright that you’re a caring, thoughtful person - just show up here and it’ll be implied." - hannah albertine
"A five-year-old Bed-Stuy coffee shop known for deep neighborhood engagement: before the pandemic it hosted community programming like yoga classes and readings, and during the crisis it set up community fridges, demonstrating long-standing grassroots support rather than outsider-driven, profit-first initiatives." - Monica Burton
"I saw that Playground Coffee Shop in Bed-Stuy has set up “community fridges” in nearby neighborhoods where residents can donate to or withdraw fresh produce for free." - Luke Fortney
