Let me start with this- Playland has a LOT of sentimental value for me. Growing up, my parents would bring me almost every weekend. We'd BBQ in the picnic area starting EARLY as back in those days, it was first come first serve. We'd then spend the entire day in the park and would be exhausted, but had a great time.
Fast forward to 2023- my first time back in 10+ years. Once nice change is that you now have to rent the picnic area. I think this is a great idea to keep the small arguments that many families would have over tables at bay. BUT- $215+ for 10 tables and a double grill. That's a bit steep. Factor this in with $40 tickets to go on rides, $5 per game, and $20 parking. You're already $280 in the hole and haven't even purchased food and supplies yet.
Now, I called a few times and the people I spoke to were nice, but gave me the wrong info. If I knew there was a cheaper "spectator" band to get into the park without going on rides, I'd have purchased a few of those for the parties that wanted to play games and walk around but not get on rides. So I'd say I overspent on bands as well by at least....$120? Fine- I get it. Inflation. BUT- nowhere in my communications w/ anyone was I told that basically half of the adult rides are currently under "funstruction." That's beyond frustrating when you've already spent a ton of time, effort, and money and you get there and barely anything is open for adults. This also included the paddleboats and I don't know if they even have a guided boat tour anymore like they used to.
Playland used to be great for families to go to and not spend an arm and a leg- that was a major part of the appeal. But now everything seems like a money grab. You'd think that for the price, they'd at least have soap and paper towels in the bathroom.
Overall notes for anyone considering going and for Playland management in general to hopefully get better:
1. The picnic area is definitely sufficient. Bring a tent for some shade and protection from the rain. It's a bit pricey, but you can have up to 60 people, so if you charge them all a sufficient amount, you can make your money back.
2. Bring your own TP and hand soap. The bathrooms are not taken care of.
3. Buy a spectator band for those who aren't into rides or the costs are going to add up QUICK.
4. Realize that many of the rides this season are closed. Plan ahead and know that if you're going for the appeal of an amusement park, it' s not really there anymore.
5. For management- sell packages! If you're paying so much to rent 10 tables, park, etc, offer a package that includes parking, tickets, games, etc. Make it worth the visit.
Playland will always hold a special place in my heart, but as far as BBQ's there are concerned, unless the issues are addressed, this will be the last.
