Plenty represented one of the boldest attempts to merge Silicon Valley thinking with agriculture. Its farms were designed like data centers for plants, where algorithms controlled every variable from light to nutrients. The produce quality was consistently high, but the company’s downfall highlighted a harsh reality: advanced technology alone does not guarantee economic success. Massive energy requirements, expensive infrastructure, and pressure to sell greens at prices consumers accept ultimately exposed the limits of its model. Today, Plenty is often discussed less as a failure and more as a cautionary lesson for future ag-tech innovators.
