Look Inside: Plum Market’s Store Opens in New Downtown Detroit - Eater Detroit

"The first Detroit location of Michigan-based chain Plum Market opens today bringing new lunch options, a cafe, cold-pressed juice, groceries, and a casual bar to downtown. It’s a big deal for many Detroiters who work and live in the area. Although downtown developments have boomed in recent years, the growth in options for basic retail amenities like markets and flower shops hasn’t necessarily kept pace. The store, which anchors a prime corner of the Ally Building overlooking Woodward Avenue and the Spirit of Detroit, features an edited selection of retail items from its larger stores including toiletries, cut flowers, snacks, wine, beer, and staple grocery items like eggs and milk. However, a large portion of the footprint functions like a restaurant with casual dining and drinking options. There’s also Mon Jin Lau grab-and-go sushi and two rows of hot and cold bars filled with salad fixings and options like build-your-own nachos and veggie samosas. The checkout area also doubles as a Zingerman’s Coffee shop with drinks, Avalon pastries, and bagels from New York Bagel." - Brenna Houck

I love this store. I supported this location for years. Made friends with the staff and everything. It's sad to see how rude the culinary leader with the blonde ponytail treats staff. She called a few guest derogatory names. Sorry, not how I wanted to start my Monday. If this how plum market treat staff and guest of different race and ethnicities then I'll be better off keeping my money. I'm completely furious of the action of plum market leadership. #banplummarket

Google
Don’t expect anything more than a deli / bar / convenience store and you won't be disappointed. Nice staff and very clean. Limited selection that consists of mostly "healthy" snacks, beer, wine, milk and fancy soaps. Also everything is fairly expensive. All the food looks good so I cannot really speak to the deli's quality other than the pot pies are not great. Also has a bar that serves alcohol. -NoneMoreHip

Google
Very nice store lovely set up a little tight but very nice. A little bit on the expensive side certain items but that's the price for downtown. Buffet Standard price, set up was nice and food was hot. Service was great.

Google
An absolutely wonderful experienceIt is above my pay grade but it’s mainly for people who live and work in downtown the food looks and smells delicious they have plants, greeting cards, a champagne vending machine, hot food, self serve food, baby items, and little snacks.

Google
Horrible place. Horrible bland food. Extremely overpriced. Self check out and customer service doesn't exiat. All the sandwhiches breakfast and otherwise are all a soggy gross mess. I would not recommend!

Google
The food is always excellent, but be prepared for sticker-shock when you cash out if you get anything from the hot or cold bar (including soup... $8?! Insane.)

Yelp
Nice quality options but very small. Prepared foods was tiny. STAFF WAS FAST AND EFFICIENT.

Yelp
Got lost on the way to find a nearby cvs and stumbled upon this ! Hot and cold food available. Lots of healthier choices. Kind of pricey but convenient. There aren't many other markets or quick bite places in the area that we noticed. Confused because there was no cashier but the self checkout was so simple and easy and an employee was right there if we needed help.

Yelp
I've been to Plum Market at both the Ann Arbor and West Bloomfield locations multiple times so I was looking forward to picking up a few items for a quick lunch. Located within the Ally Detroit Center building, it was a cold and brisk walk from the office. The footprint is smaller than what you would find in the suburbs, catering mostly to the lunch crowd. At the front of the space, there is seating for those wanting to grab and stay. There are refrigerated cases filled with colorful drinks: juices, seltzers, colas, etc, snacks, and grocery essentials. Shelves are filled with wine bottles and six-packs. As well, there seemed to be a lot of snacks. In the middle of the store, there is a self-serve section and towards the back, pre-made offerings from Mon Jin Lau and eye-catching sandwiches ready to be warmed up. I picked out the Ally sub, deli slices with lettuce, tomato slices, and pepperoncinis on a thin, crusty baguette. The bread was so wonderful, and the sandwich was larger than what I typically have for lunch. Next to the sandwich counter, there were salads and hot entrées. The kale and Brussels sprouts salad looked amazing. It was even better than it looked, with dried cranberries and slivered almonds. It was such a unique tasting side. Along with that, I picked up a piece of cake, a favorite of mine from Zingerman's. The Hummingbird cake was moist and flavorful, filled with coconut, pineapple, and nuts. There was a generous layer of cream cheese frosting (exactly how I like my cake). I also saw a bag of Korean barbecue Kettle brand chips so I had to pick that up, as well. I prefer sweet over savory snacks but the flavor was so unique, I had to try it. Service was distressingly slow. The line wound towards the back. We stood sandwiched between the shelves and tried to make room as customers shimmied by to get towards the back or look for something specifc. That, and the high price of the sandwiches limit the number of times that I will likely return, despite the fact that the food was tasty and the selection was vast.

Yelp
Expensive and pretentious. Refinance your house across the street at Rocket mortgage before entering cashless store. Staff is always standing around talking. Won't move. Won't acknowledge you. The chef gets annoyed when you point out the chicken was completely undercooked. Hot foods really identify as cold foods there

Yelp
Although it's a condensed version of Plum Market, you can get the essential great tasting hot food, cold food, salad and deli sandwiches that they would serve in the big locations. I didn't notice any price difference. You can use your plum market rewards app for points and coupons. Staff members are very friendly, fast service and helpful. There's plenty of tables and chairs to accommodate guests while drinking their Zingerman's coffee and pastries. If you're into healthy stuff, there's a section for fresh fruit juices in bottles, pre-cut fruits and crudite with dips, leafy greens and salad dressings. What impressed me is how they organized the mini market with pre packaged cheese/deli, dairy, chips and cracker, beer, wine, apothecary, bakeshop and flower shop. The entirety of the store is visually clean. I'm amazed to find a Moet & Chandon Champagne vending machine. Sounds fancy for only $15 a pop ;-) With the warm weather outside, it is highly recommended to get refreshments and unwind at Plum Market while in downtown Detroit.

Yelp
The first thing to know is that the plum market located in the Ally center is not a full service location, rather it is what plum market is calling a condensed collection. Being a condensed location you will not find any fresh produce, however you will still find a sizeable assortment of prepackaged "healthy" snacks on shelves. Upon entering plum market after a three stair step down you are immediately cast in to a seating area, which you will have to traverse to enter the shopping area. To the left of the eating area is a relatively large floral area with nice and fresh looking flowers. To the right is a sleek looking bar. One thing to note however is that I was told that alcohol bought in the store can not be consumed on the premises, only drinks bought through the bar can be. Although I'm fairly certain I saw other people getting their store bought bottle of wine uncorked at the bar. So if you are going for a meal and want to also have an alcoholic drink be mindful that it may not work out for you how you would expect. Something that really made me laugh was the chilled champagne vending machine next to the bar. Ignoring both the floral area and the bar, continuing straight will lead you in to the market proper. Like I said above, there really isn't too much in terms of groceries in this store. There are two small aisles by the centrally placed cafe / cash register and then a few more aisles shooting off from either side. A good 1/4 of the shelving space was dedicated to wine and beer. The other 3/4 of the shelves seemed to be dedicated to chocolates, "healthy" snacks and hygiene products such as high end soaps. There are also many, many juice drinks lining one side of the building along a refrigerated interior wall, opposite this wall is another smaller refrigerated section housing mostly organic milk and the like. Nearing the back of the store brings you to a fabulous looking deli there are two long food bars, filled with everything from rice, chicken and salad to meatballs, mixed vegetables, and beans. After you get done perusing the food bars you are greeted by four deli stations, one for hot foods, one for salads, one for sandwiches and one for sushi. That's pretty much it for the content and layout of the store, below is a food review, my personal thoughts and overall review. I found it really nice how everything how everything in the deli was labeled for caloric content but the sticker shock at checkout made me think back and realize how, suspiciously, absolutely nothing was labeled for price. Initially I had no opinion either way about the cafeteria style of picking up food and paying for it in another location but after realizing everything was missing a price I almost felt duped by the system. You get food and take it out of the deli area making it impossible to return only to be told it is some exorbitant price. I had a pot pie which was a decent size but no exceptionally large and that by itself was $12.99 which I find crazy. I can't speak to the quality of all the food but I definitely found the pot pie lacking. Right off the bat the crust of the pot pie was not flaky and actually felt a little doughy. Also the gravy was very nontraditional, it tasted slightly creamy with a hint of sweetness and left a bit of a spicy tingle on my lips even though it didn't taste spicy. One the plus side the chicken was very tender and the flavors seemed to mesh alright. I wouldn't consider this a bad pot pie but at the same time I wouldn't consider it good, it was very middle of the road and for $12.99 I would expect much better. For all those who don't want to read a wall of text let me summarize my opinions on the downtown condensed collection Plum Market: + Clean. + Friendly staff. + Big beer and wine selection. + Bar. - Very expensive in my opinion, see above. - Food is not great in my very limited experience, see above. - Questionable about what you can and can't drink. - Very limited selection on groceries. I ultimately gave this store a 3/5 while it does have it's weaknesses it also has a lot of strengths and I would rate my experiences here overall positively. Just don't expect anything more than a deli / bar / convenience store. -NoneMoreHip

Yelp
Two stars. Didn't buy anything due to the robbery the store was attempting on its customers. This shop is designed for young professionals who haven't been shopping on their own much to notice the outrageous prices, or are yet to be concerned with their own long term financials. What a joke.

Yelp
I'm so glad they opened up downtown! It's a smaller version of the bigger market; with a main focus on the salad bar, prepared foods, and deli. You can pick up some grocery items here, but it seems a bit limited for that. Designed for the pick up and go lunch crowd, mostly. We ordered a catered lunch for next week, which we're really looking forward to; today we just tried one of their large cobb salads. It was perfectly fresh and delicious, though the dressing was a little odd. I think I'll just ask for ranch next time. Looking forward to stopping in often, even if it is on the pricey side.

Yelp
Excellent coffee and food items A little crammed for my liking with isle sales items. Fast service tho. I love the chilled wine machine. That's sweet. French press and our over coffee so that's great. Easy in and out location. Nice staff. If they could limit the isle debris and open it up a bit would be nice. Lots of unnecessary items

Yelp
Some staff is unfriendly and barely crack a smile. The culture within the store do not like to give food discounts when there is a clear problem unlike Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. They do have some very nice unique items. Nonetheless, extremely overpriced, similar items can be found online or elsewhere less expensive.

Yelp
This store feels like a smaller, less good Whole Foods. I had their Mac n cheese and it was very bland. I paid for my hot foods, then sat at the bar for "happy hour" which is literally like 2 beers on special and a few wines, so that was pathetic. Then I looked at the drink menu and ordered, to which the hipster employee informed me I had to pay up at the cashier for my beer. Keep in mind there's no sign, and it led me to wonder what his job was if he wasn't serving drinks at the bar. I probably won't be back.

Yelp
Had the salad bar and the chicken breast with mac n cheese all very tasty but nothing over the moon. The service is ok, shuffled our food like it was nothing to the point they spilled part of my salad. It's ok just pricey as heck

Yelp
Plum Market's downtown location is a very welcome addition to the area for those of us who work nearby. Plum Market is a great choice to pick up lunch from when you aren't entirely sure what you want, as they have a ton of ready-to-eat, buffet and chef station options. Only complaints: super expensive (but that's not unique to this location, it's the whole chain) and the line to checkout at lunchtime can be slow moving.
google avatar

M P.

Yelp
What store says open until 8pm and you walk in about 7pm and not one ounce of hot cooked food is available???? Unbelievable! Don't think I'll ever be back here again.
google avatar

Carla T.

Yelp
She was great at making up special orders and always of quick to improvise when I just need to celebrate on the fly.

Kate K.

Yelp
love the hot and cold bar options - "the tall guy" was super helpful in finding soy sauce packets for me!!

Yelp
I've been to this location about 10 times. Food is fine. Prices are a nightmare. I've been shopping at the plum markets in Bloomfield area for 5-10 years now. At those locations you can get a beautiful large piece of baked salmon for roughly $15. It doesn't make me cringe. The tiny pieces they're dishing out at Plum Detroit are something out of a Monty Python sketch, the two sides don't make up for it for $18-$20. The worst price gouge at this location is the fruit. Each time I've been here I pick up a small packaged fruit container, look at the price, see it's 10.99 and then I begin looking around to see if someone is going to come out to tell me they're kidding. Seriously Wtf. I suggest if anyone is looking for salmon to fill their salad bowls up with the chopped salmon salad. As much as they can.

M D.

Yelp
This is the place to go if you're into 2oz shots of hot chocolate for $4. Could not believe what was handed to me was actually what they consider a legit beverage. I would avoid Plum Market unless you want to be overcharged for mediocre food and drinks.

Yelp
Amazing food! Incredible variety of food! It's better than Whole Foods! Great location! Very clean! The only MAJOR drawback is the freaking club music blasting 24/7 morning noon & night! Not sure who's idea this was but it's a bad one. Lower the volume please and can please not have to listen to loud club music at 10am on a Sun morning?

Yelp
We live in Midtown and are quite thankful for having a boutique grocer near us. Whole Foods is nice but being able to shop for more local Michigan goods is a plus. We were excited to host our first Thanksgiving in our new home and chose catering for 12 from Plum Market. Let's just say it was an absolute hit! From the ordering process to picking up the order to the kitchen prep was all a breeze. Erin and even the executive chef personally delivered my order and flowers to our car a few blocks without any hesitance. My mom stopped by last minute too to grab more flowers and the floral department was just as accommodating. As for the Thanksgiving meal itself, we were unanimously blown away by the quality of the dishes. Each dish had its own flavor profile that was outstanding and had something to say by everyone at the table. We've been so thankful we have plenty of leftovers because it was too scrumptious! We will be sure to use Plum Market in the future for any catering needs and highly, highly recommend you do the same!

Yelp
The store is very reminiscent of Whole Foods. I came on opening day and purchased a Tex-Mex breakfast burrito from the hot bar. The burrito was lacking in flavor I took one bite and threw it away for a $5.00 burrito I was expecting a lot more flavor. I noticed lots of their hot and cold items are not priced so when you check out you are shocked at how much everything costs. There is only one line for check out for food, ordering coffee and ordering wine or beer so it does get very congested. I'm glad I checked it out and they did have a nice floral section but I do not see myself coming back.

Yelp
Yay!! Nice to place a market in the city. Of course, it would be nice if it were larger. Although it's not a full-fledged grocery store, it serves its purpose. The food bars have great selections for hot and cold choices. There are also a variety of beverages, bread, snacks, fruits, chocolates, vitamins. Plum market has a nice seating area outside as well as inside. Conveniently, you can pick up a bouquet of flowers.

Yelp
I love this Plum Market location! The hot bar food and salad bar is delicious, beautiful decor inside and a great place to get quick, healthy food. Much needed in downtown Detroit!

Yelp
So convenient to have this little market within walking distance of our place downtown.

N S.

Yelp
Where do I start? I really wanted to love this place. I mostly shop here to make myself a salad at lunch time. The food at the salad bar is very fresh, but the hot food at the bar and gourmet counter leave a lot to be desired and is SUPER expensive. This location is also very tiny (i.e. cramped) and the layout doesn't seem well thought. I also find myself getting annoyed with the employees because they constantly reach around customers to maintain the salad/food bars and you're always bumping into them. I actually miss the cafeteria Plum Market replaced. There were a lot more options, the place was more spacious, and the prices were reasonable.

April S.

Yelp
So far I've had the tuna wrap, honey sirachi salmon, mac n cheese and spicy chicken legs. All the items were very good. Staff is pleasant and prompt. Only downside is they are a little on the pricy side, but you know that when you walk into Plum Market.

Carl P.

Yelp
Great little gem in the downtown business district. Perfect place to grab a healthy work lunch or a last minute bottle of wine. We've stopped by on a weekend too, and the bartenders were very friendly and helpful. Not the cheapest option, but quality is top notch and location is ideal.

Dennis S.

Yelp
Awesome so awesome. Amazing staff. Great food and incredible wine selection. I'm a true fan.

Scott L.

Yelp
Very friendly and helpful staff. Had a variety of healthcare and food stuff. Treated like valued clients. Loved it here and will remember it for a quick quality bite.

Nina J.

Yelp
Way overpriced for food that's mediocre at best. You can't get a decent sized lunch for under $15. Hot bar is bland and room temp. $6 for a cup of chopped watermelon, it's just ridiculous.

Gloria G.

Yelp
I've never seen prices so high! I visited the new downtown Detroit store yesterday and didn't buy a thing. I won't be back. I'm a regular shopper at Nino Salvaggio's and village market. I'm accustomed to paying a premium for great produce and prepared food. But... $6 for a small bowl of watermelon? $12 for a lettuce salad? $14 for soup? $8 -$10 for a bottle of juice? $14 sandwich? Sandwiches and salads are premade and refrigerated. Driscoll strawberries $6. These are the same Driscoll strawberries that you can buy at any Kroger... 2 for $5 at Kroger . I saw the probiotics there that I normally buy at the better health store. They were $55 at Plum. I can get them for $40 at better health. Food looked fresh but Plum is price gouging! I put my money back in my pocket and went across the street to the deli where they made me a beautiful, fresh, and tasty deli sandwich made to my liking... for $8
