"At 500 Woodward Ave., the first Detroit location of Michigan-based Plum Market opened today, bringing new lunch options, a cafe, cold-pressed juice, groceries, and a casual bar to downtown. The small-format, 8,000-square-foot store anchors a prime corner of the Ally Building overlooking Woodward Avenue and the Spirit of Detroit and focuses on organic and natural products with an edited selection of toiletries, cut flowers, snacks, wine, beer, and staples like eggs and milk. Much of the space functions like a restaurant: there’s a seating area for eating a sandwich or a chicken pot pie from the deli, Mon Jin Lau grab-and-go sushi, and two rows of hot and cold bars with salad fixings and options such as build-your-own nachos and veggie samosas. The checkout area doubles as a Zingerman’s Coffee shop serving drinks, Avalon pastries, and New York Bagel bagels, and a small bar pours beer and wine by the glass or bottle (happy hour 3 p.m.–6 p.m.; wine corkage fee $10). Guests can pick up a $15 token to purchase a mini bottle of chilled Moët from an on-site vending machine — one of only a handful currently operating in the U.S. — and the bar will open the bottle so visitors can sip inside or on Plum Market’s sunny patio along Larned Street. Hours are 6 a.m.–8 p.m. Monday–Friday and 8 a.m.–8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The company describes this condensed downtown format as about half to a third the size of a standard Plum Market and says it plans more similar locations in the coming years." - Brenna Houck
