The 18 Best Restaurants In Highland Park

"Pocha is a Mexican spot on York Blvd that blends flavors from both sides of the border, along with lots of hot pink and messages of female empowerment on the walls. You come here for a mix of traditional dishes and some creative spins that actually work: freshly charred elote with crema and cotija cheese, shrimp ceviche with Persian cucumbers and toasted sesame oil, and an ingenious creation called la burrita. It's a burrito made with a thin crepe that's incredibly fluffy, delicious, and light enough to contemplate ordering a second one. Go with the braised brisket as your protein option because it's tender and juicy, or try one of Pocha's vegan options, too. " - brant cox, nikko duren, garrett snyder, sylvio martins

Pocha - Review - Highland Park - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Pocha isn't your typical Mexican cantina, nor does it want to be. Sure, this Chicana-owned Highland Park spot serves hearty staples you'd find at many traditional places, like caldo de res and chile verde, but that's only one side to it. The all-day operation actively pushes back against old-time clichés by deconstructing traditional recipes, adding fresh spins, and embracing its unabashed love for fluorescent pink. Pocha is a unique type of Mexican American restaurant and feels unapologetically refreshing for it. photo credit: Jessie Clapp The word "pocha" is Mexican slang for Chicanas who grew up in the U.S. and might only speak broken Spanish, a term that some might interpret as a slight dig. But at Pocha the restaurant, the duality of being from neither here nor there is a creative battering ram used to break down preconceptions. The interior is lined with homages to Frida Kahlo, portraits of Chicana women, and neon signs that say things like, "jefa-owned" and "resiliencia." You can experience a Sunday mariachi brunch on its outdoor patio, but also the occasional drag show with your morning chilaquiles. And we like how the casual, white-walled space doubles as a makeshift community center for all kinds of events, whether it's an art show, supper club, or just a casual weeknight dinner that calls for eating tacos in sweatpants. You can roughly split the menu at Pocha into three categories: vegan-friendly, traditional Mexican, and something we like to call "things you'd find at Sweetgreen." The third category is a health-conscious mix of quinoa bowls, kale with mustard vinaigrette, and a tasty corn and black bean salad whose creamy poblano dressing we'd happily drop money on at Whole Foods. But overall, these tend to be the least exciting dishes when compared to the rest of the menu, which is filled with hits. We're big fans of the creamy vegan poblano corn dip, excellent chicken tinga, and beautiful shrimp ceviche flavored with sesame oil and served with chewy tostones. And if you're coming to Pocha for one dish and one dish only, we insist you try their ingenious invention known as la burrita (a.k.a. a burrito made from a light, fluffy crepe). photo credit: Jessie Clapp In a city with so many Mexican restaurants that you sometimes lose track of which ones you've eaten at, it's not every day that a place grabs your attention as Pocha does. Yes, it has loud branding, and a few dishes border on snoozy, but it also serves Mexican-American food we haven't seen elsewhere (which arguably speaks louder than its generous use of pink). So if you're on the hunt for a fun lunch spot with plant-based options or just somewhere that delivers a needed jolt after you visited the same taco truck six times in the past week, head to Pocha. Food Rundown Michelada The bar at Pocha serves beer and a few types of margarita flavored with things like hibiscus and pineapple, but our drink of choice here is the michelada. The mix is light and briny, which makes it shockingly easy to gulp down. We might deduct a few points for it not being salty or spicy enough, but overall it's a solid miche. photo credit: Jessie Clapp El Güero Taco Similar to how some people exaggerate certain details about themselves on dating apps, this taco sounded great on paper but disappointed in real life. The cheese-stuffed güero pepper came out cold, and the cheese pull we expected was non-existent. Chicken Tinga Taco The chicken tinga at Pocha is everything we want from a great chicken tinga. It's juicy, pulls apart beautifully, and comes coated in a mild, tomatoey salsa and lots of queso cotija. The fresh corn tortillas they use are excellent, too. photo credit: Pocha Elote A La Pocha We like our elote heavily charred and/or borderline burnt, and this one delivered. The kernels are sweet, smoky, and topped with crema and queso cotija. Pocha isn't trying to reinvent the wheel here—this is just good, classic elote. Poblano Corn Dip This chunky, scoopable dip screams Super Bowl Sunday and that's a compliment in our books. It's creamy, savory from the charred poblano peppers, and, most surprisingly, totally vegan. Quinoa Corn Black Bean Salad You've probably eaten something similar to this Southwest-esque salad before, but the bright and creamy poblano dressing that's mixed in tips the scale on this dish from whatever to pretty good. Ceviche A La Pocha This gorgeous plate of ceviche is as tasty as it is beautiful. The marinated shrimp is tender, the persian cucumbers and watermelon radish bring crunch and freshness, and the sesame oil does what it usually does: make everything more delicious. We love eating this ceviche with tostones—flattened crispy plantains—instead of the usual tostadas and might never look back. photo credit: Jessie Clapp La Burrita You can get this delicious crepe-burrito hybrid filled with a bunch of things, including tinga, al pastor, or sauteed mushrooms, but we opt for the salty, tender-braised brisket. There's a lot of beef and crema stuffed into this crepe, but the wrap is so fluffy that you're coaxed into thinking this loaded burrito is lighter than air. If you order one thing at Pocha, make it this. Tres Leches You could probably go to 100 different Mexican spots in LA and find 100 different tres leches cakes, but the one at Pocha deserves a blue ribbon, gold star, and standing ovation all at once. It's soaked in so much dairy that a spoon cuts through it like a custard, and tastes like pure, rich condensed milk without being too much of a good thing." - Sylvio Martins

These LA Restaurants That Opened During Pandemic Are Ready for the Future - Eater LA

"Employing a small staff from day one has been an important overhead-saving measure for first-time restaurateurs Michelle Serafin and Claire Risoli as well. The two signed a lease in February and were ready to welcome diners into their 90-seat Mexican restaurant Pocha in Highland Park, complete with a live mariachi band and Yucatan bar bites, when shelter-in-place orders came down." - Cathy Chaplin

Love this place! The food is amazing and reasonably priced. Claire is always so welcoming and attentive with service and quality of dishes. We love to go here to celebrate special occasions for brunch. The cocktails are also delicious. My family and I love Pocha LA!!

Google
Pocha LA is a good concept and seems to have tons of potential... It's just not there yet. We had several dishes here and everything seemed like it just lacked flavor. This Mexican food didn't really have the spice or tangyness, or soul that good Mexican food should have. The braised brisket tacos were mushy and one note... The Chile Relleno tasted like plain veggies... And the La Burrita filling was ok but the crepe it was wrapped in was bland. Even the chips and salsas stood out because we had to pay for it and the salsa portions were tiny. The chilaqiles were good but... it's chilaqiles. The style and concept this restaurant has seems so polished and nice, but the food needs to catch up to that. Might give this another try in the future, maybe it was just an off day.

I totally forgot to upload the pictures when I went. Unfortunately it’s is closed. This restaurant was well organized and service was super fast just how I like it. Here are some pictures.

Fun place for a night out on the town and / or a quick lunch with good company. Food is very traditional, and the flavors are very authentic. Rich in flavor. Mole is my favorite, and so are the tacos de Barbacoa. Their drinks are very refreshing and pretty. Their tortillas are yummie. I just really enjoy this place and the ambiance. Check it out.

I’m visiting from out of town and staying close by, and popped in for an early solo dinner. I sat at the small bar and the staff were attentive and friendly :) I got the pozole verde and tostones. Big portions and both tasty - just what I needed to warm up on a rainy, cold day.

Google
Good happy hour. Mon-Fri 3-6. Drink and food specials. Inside is bright, modern, with a homestyle decor. There's also a small patio in the back. The food was good. Got to try a lot from the happy hour menu and I liked all of it. Service was good. There's a small parking lot in back or street parking within a block or two.

Google
Nice contemporary Mexican restaurant. I liked most things - portions, barbacoa, tortillas, ceviche flavors, the platanos, cooking of the mushrooms. Service was awesome too - ours was busy during brunch rush but he did it with grace. Unloved moments (don't get me wrong still a 4) The mushroom taco wasnt as seasoned as I was hoping - still cooked well! I ordered my chilaquiles with Chile Verde - no pork! I played myself lol. Maybe im just used to pork when I see Chile Verde *shrugs*

Google
This is definitely a new favorite for us! The vegan chili relleno and brisket tacos were amazing! They have limited patio seating open currently in a cute area behind the main restaurant with more than ample distance from others.

Yelp
So sad to see them close. This place easily turned into our favorite Mexican joint after we moved to the East Side.

Yelp
Cute happy hour on weekdays, 3-6pm! The interior is adorable and tacos are delicious. The mole and the Barbacoa ones! They have all their tacos on HH for $4-5 each, margaritas are $10. Parking is in their private lot on the side of the restaurant. Good, friendly service.

Yelp
Parking: Decent sized parking lot! Ambience: Both indoor and outdoor seating available. Indoor seating has cozy IG vibes, with romantic soft lighting, neon signs, and good amount of plants and artwork. Outdoor seating was very windy (their outdoor umbrella toppled over due to the wind) and could be a bit cleaner, but makes sense given it's near some trees and exposed to the elements. Service: Very friendly! Staff accommodated our large group and made no fuss about moving place settings and tables and such to ensure we were comfortably seated. They did forget part of one of the orders, but were very apologetic and did their best to right the mistake. Taste: Got the tinga bowl, which was absolutely amazing! The chicken was wonderfully seasoned and marinated, and paired so nicely with the pickled onions, plantains, avocado, and rice--flavors and consistencies blended perfectly together! My friend got the horchata and ordered a few different tacos, all of which were alright but not nearly as good as my bowl, so it seems it's a bit of a hit and miss depending on what you order. Would highly recommend the tinga bowl--phenomenal!

Yelp
When he finds the perfect place for date night... Pocha is a quaint little place in Highland Park that offers delicious food. We ordered the chicken mole and it was the best mole I've ever had! The chile verde plate was also delicious and I enjoyed every single bite. We topped it off with dessert and ordered the chocoflan and although it was good, it needed something more to make it better, like caramel sauce. Overall this place is a great date night spot, has great ambience with delicious food, and the perfect place to sit and enjoy the evening. Bonus tip: there's plenty of free parking behind the restaurant so you can stay as long as you want! And they have a cute patio area for warm nights.

Yelp
I made dinner reservation for six people at 7 PM on a Sunday night. We all arrived on time, but despite the restaurant being 80% empty, we weren't seated for another 10 minutes. Once we were finally seated, the server took our orders. One of my friends ordered a Cadillac margarita, but the server said they only serve regular margaritas. It seemed the server didn't realize that a Cadillac margarita is just a regular margarita with some Cointreau or triple sec added. The food was good, but it was served one dish at a time. By the time the last person received their meal, it had been at least 30 minutes since the first person was served. I would recommend this place if you're dining alone, but if you're with a group, you probably won't be eating at the same time.

Yelp
This is my second visit and I had a positive experience. Right away I notice a lot of improvements from when I came in Sept 2023 and left a mixed review. FOOD: My friend and I shared 3 dishes, which were tasty in their own unique way. **Ceviche A La Pocha came with large chunks of juicy shrimp. I love Ceviche and they make it chunky with persian cucumbers and habanero chiles. It was was just the right amount of spice and it's served with crispy tostones. It's a good combo to eat together. **The Brisket Burrita had tender braised brisket that was flavorful due to the signature marinade they use. The burrito is small but very filling. **Sweet Plantains was just as yummy as the first time I tried it. Filipinos eat a similar dish so it reminded me of home. The vegan crema is refreshing and light, so dunk that plantain in there before every bite. **Pineapple Cucumber Margarita - We ordered this with vodka instead of tequila, and were vary impressed by how refreshing and balanced this cocktail drink was. Not to mention, the presentation was lovely. SERVICE: We came on a Wednesday night and did not need to make any reservations because it wasn't packed around this time. There is an upper deck area that is cozy, quiet, and had a cute pink neon lights on the wall, perfect for catching up with a friend or a small group. Our server made recommendations from the menu, and was very accommodating of our needs. She made time to check on us even though she was the only server left. My final thoughts... The food was delicious, the attention to detail from decorations to presentation of dishes is remarkable, and the customer service improved so I'm giving Pocha LA 5 stars.

Yelp
Wow! This restaurant is top-notch. I loved the food and the coffee, the cafe de olla was perfectly balanced of sweet even without creamer. The chilaquiles and the chili verde con juevos have my mouth watering thinking about the joy that was our meal! The chile verde packed incredible flavor and the plate was large enough that I took some home for breakfast the next morning. The servers were incredibly friendly and acknowledged they were busy and would probably take time to be served. The situational awareness to let us know was appreciated so we weren't wondering or waiting for service. The interior was also unique that had multi-level but I believe was a remodeled home. There was a coffee bar and patio seating- all very quaint! Loved it! I honestly can't wait to come back!

Yelp
I was so excited to visit after reading the reviews and came here with our work group and they had us in the back area of the restaurant. It was so hot out there they had 4 umbrellas for shade but it wasn't enough shade for 36 people. The drinks took about an hour to come out. The service was not great either seemed like they had one waitress for the entire group. The food overall was ok but the aguachiles didn't have any flavor. The watermelon margarita was not good at all. It didn't have any flavor and was so strong and all we could taste was the alcohol. The Paloma was also not good. I honestly think they weren't prepared for a large group. Maybe I'll come back alone next time and give them a try then.

Yelp
came to pocha sometime last year and was so excited to come back today... except when we got there the whole menu had been changed. The food and reason I loved pocha is gone. The food we did get was still really good but PLEASE BRING BACK THE OLD MENU. it had variety and flavor to cater to EVERYONE. The waitress we got was super nice and service was still good for a Sunday. Not sure if I'll be back to be honest... :/

Yelp
Great ambiance! Delicious drinks and food! Great place to have some tacos with the ladies! Wouldn't have known about this place if it wasn't for Yelp! Came here for a Yelp event and I will definitely be coming back and introduce this place to my friends and family. Parking is a bit rough but not bad. You are still in LA, so it's expected. However, you can't beat free parking!!!!

Yelp
Visited Pocha LA for an event in March for Women's Month. I enjoyed the food that I tried so I decided to come back to support and try other menu items I didn't try at the event. We placed an order for pickup. ORDERED: + Chips & Guacamole -- 10/10 + (2) LA Burritas: (1) Bean and Cheese (customized) -- 9/10 Told, "Burrito was good. Crepe style was different but I liked how it was prepared and that it was very fresh" (1) Barbacoa -- 5/10 The meat for me was more on the sweet than savory side. I had not tried this style at the event and was completely caught off guard by the taste. I didn't finish it and gave it away. + (2) Aguas Frescas: (1) Orange Julio Told, "Very Fresh. Healthy. Enjoyed it" would have loved to seen more drink than ice. This drink was consumed before leaving Pocha's parking lot and it had more ice than drink from what I saw. (1) Hibiscus Lemonade -- 10/10 It was so refreshing. Sweetness level was perfect and for whatever reason this drinks ice level was perfect compared to the other one. I was glad, because I was able to enjoy the drink for longer since it was not mostly ice. + Dessert: churros with caramel sauce -- 10/10 OVERALL: I appreciate the friendliness of Claire, her team (familia) of staff and my order being ready at desired pickup time. Although, I didn't enjoy my LA Burrita (Barbacoa) due to the sweetness in particular and (1) of the drinks had SO much ice I would return again to explore other menu items.

Yelp
Pros - Attentive, positive staff - Live music - Modern and cute ambiance - Delicious Huevos divorciados, which is a dish you don't see everywhere so I'm SO glad these were tasty Cons - Huevos rancheros were a bit greasy - Bathroom door didn't lock when I was there last

Yelp
First time for me and hubby and we enjoyed everything. Food: very very tasty and perfect portions. Guacamole was seasoned perfectly, had just the right amount of salt. The Esquite was also delicious. I ordered their Chile Verde with Black Beans and hubby ordered the Barbacoa with Refried Beans. The cilantro rice was YUM and fluffy. Service: the staff and our waitress were pleasant and attentive as they frequently asked how our dinner was or if we needed anything. Ambiance: very cute place. Chill vibe and cute decor. We will definitely come back to try their churros lol and maybe brunch. Thank you for a great experience and keep up the great job!

Yelp
Walking up to the restaurant you wouldn't imagine the modern finishes. The servers were amazing and friendly. The food was delicious. While not your mom's cooking a beautiful nod to traditional flavors.

Yelp
This fairly upscale Mexican eatery is a very chill place to have a meal. I've had the huevos rancheros and the enchiladas verdes, both excellent. The chips and salsa are way above average. There are no shortage of exceptional places to have Mexican food in the area. Huaraches Azteca is right down the street, along with an excellent truck. Though, this is the place to bring your mom.

Yelp
I came to Pocha when they first opened about 2 years ago and fell in love with their pozole! I remembered how cute the space was and how good the food was so when we were looking for somewhere to host a happy hour for our organization I contacted the owner. Claire was amazing and very communicative from start to finish. On the day of the event, I showed up early and set everything up. I ordered my margarita before the group got there and loved the taste! The food was absolutely delicious, I ordered the tacos de papa and felt there was a good variety on the menu. The staff was very attentive the entire night and the vibes were immaculate. The back patio had string lights and they even offer blankets for a cozy night. The best part was the parking, it was so easy to come here. Would highly recommend coming here for future events!

Yelp
I was introduced to Pocha LA from a co-worker who's daughter used to work here and I was happily impressed by the thoughtfulness put into this place. To me, it was thoughtful in every way. A parking lot on the side, plenty of seating options that allowed for ease of movement and even items on the menu that accommodated different dietary restrictions from my gluten and dairy sensitivities to a friend who was vegetarian. There was something for all of us to eat. The menu was labeled thoughtfully so I didn't have to spend time asking the waiter and decide what I wanted to eat beforehand to allow for a smoother dining experience. Our waitress was younger and efficient. Being that we arrived in a group of 7, she was able to gather all of orders in a timely manner, politely, offer recommendations, and even provide prompt service. There was nothing that I did not like about my dining experience here. I ordered the Ceviche a la Pocha, the brisket taco and the mushroom taco. All of it was delicious. The brisket taco recommendation came from the waitress and left my stomach happy. I would definitely return to Pocha LA. I also appreciated that the owner and head chef was female. She checked with us after our meal was over to make sure that we had an enjoyable dining experience. Another star for that extra thoughtfulness that was the icing on the cake for me =)

Yelp
Great food. Fast service. Cozy vibe. Will have to visit multiple times to try all the things that sound/look good. I'm not a huge margarita person but if you are you'll probably like what they offer. My bfs michelada was good, I'll stick to that next time.

Yelp
Love this place! The food is excellent and the service was top notch too. We had the chicken tinga and beef brisket tacos combo, calabacitas (so yummy), watermelon aqua fresca, and the sweet plantains! Restaurant has off street parking and outdoor seating. The second floor also has lots of tables that can accommodate larger groups. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Cute restaurant and really great food! Nice outdoor seating. The drinks were delish as well!

Yelp
I have always liked Pocha and now I like it more with their new menu. I found that the old menu when they first opened was a little bare. But I am loving their tacos. This last time we got an assortment of tacos and elote a la pocha. So glad our kids didn't eat the elote because I got to eat it and it was awesome. Also like their to go packaging, it is very minimal and ordering is super easy with ChowNow. And they have curbside pickup!
google avatar

Matthew D.

Yelp
Love this place! Food is always spot on and I have a tendency to order up the whole menu. I am yet to be left unimpressed and the agua frescas are good too. I wish they still had their extensive coffee selection, but can't go wrong with all their offerings and hospitable service.

Ive been here several times with my girlfriends and it never disappoints!! The good is delicious and the drinks are top notch! The service is always great too! The decor is so cute and girly! Plenty of indoors space, outdoor space and parking!

Yelp
Pocha is a nice brunch place because of the savory food and the pleasing ambiance inside. I enjoyed the food and my experience was good. Staff are also accommodating!

Yelp
5 star service, excellent staff who recommend dishes and explain flavors. Went on Sunday and we were treated to a great female Mariachi band Food was good, if your looking for traditional Mexican food, not here. They adapted very nicely to add flavor and their own takes on classic Mexican dishes.

Yelp
Pocha LA hosted PepsiCo's West Division Women of Color SoCal Mixer. Everything about this event was amazing. There was a spacious patio for us connect with each other and enjoy various dishes from their menu. The food and drinks put me in a good mood to mingle with my colleagues. The owner was very attentive and provided excellent service throughout the entire event. We were outside for the mixer, but the vibes were spot on inside. Great ambiance and interior decor. Definitely coming back with my friends and family!

Yelp
I love that this is women owned! The aesthetic of the place is pleasing, very cute vibes. I have been a couple times now and it has been the same experience each time. While food is overall good, service is lacking (it seems maybe understaffed? Which is understandable as many places post pandemic have had this issue). The times we have come we have stood there waiting and no one even acknowledges us. I'm ok with waiting but a simple "we'll be right with you" or even a hello!! would be nice. Each time this has happened. The last time there was a waiting list out front but no one even came to check on the list and there were plenty of tables open. Each time we've had to go up to someone. However, staff is nice once you do get to talk to them lol. As I mentioned, food is over all good. I love the rice and cleans. And you can never go wrong with potato taquitos. The one thing I have not liked at all was their flan. And once my friend said her chilaquiles was lacking something...
google avatar

Yelp
I came here on a Sunday afternoon with my dog and my bf. It was great except the food fell short. I really wanted to like the place because they were so nice to my dog but their Ceviche barely had any flavor. We had to ask for extra lemon twice. The mole chicken was good and their tacos were huge and filling. Their salsa and guacamole were just okay. The guacamole was VERY bland. It didn't really have any seasoning. Again, had to ask for lemon. I will say that their drinks were good. I got the orange Julio - I'd highly recommend it. It was cute that they served their Cafe de Olla in a clay mug. The service was good - can't complain. All in all, a pleasant visit but would not go back - not my taste.
google avatar

Yelp
Radically delicious Mexican food. I mean wow. The guacamole was insanely yummy. I make guacamole but it's never come close to this flavor. That alone would get me back here. The brisket burrita was insane. So damn good. The texture of the wrap is similar to a crepe which I loved! Never had something like that before. Our waitress was a sweet doll. Couldn't have asked for a friendlier person to give us our first experience. Looking forward to our next visit and my next bite!

Yelp
Wow my second time here joined up with lifelong friends who grew up in Cypress Park and had the greatest get together here . Our Host was the greatest knew of our get together and started us out with Dhots of u know what. In the patio in the back we felt we were on vacation in Italy. Got to bring back my tennis gang for happy hour after tennis down the Arroyo

Yelp
Really cool space that looks like a converted house, love the white walls and colorful decor. The platanos were really yummy. We tried the cinnamon coffee. There is a very small parking lot in the back. Service was friendly.

Yelp
This is a very pretty, chill-vibe restaurant with good cocktails and yummy food. Service was good, our server was attentive and helpful in guiding us through the various menu options since this was our first visit. The food was delicious. My friend had the posole which was a vibrate red broth soup full of flavor, and I got the huevos divorciados (divorced eggs) over easy for me. This means the eggs are separated by the type of sauce that is drizzled on them Red vs. Green, and on this plate the side of the dish the eggs are on. Really yummy. We also had the taquitos de papa appetizer, which were tasty with their crunchy exterior and soft interior. These were also a lot bigger than what you'd expect for a taquito (at least in my experience).

Yelp
We were looking for something local and found Pocha LA nearby. We had the cafe de olla, horchata latte (currently not on the menu because their espresso machine is down) made with the cafe de olla, chilaquiles with carnitas and green sauce and the Chile verde con huevos. Everything was delicious! I like that they didn't just serve the carnitas shredded but had big chunks of meat too. The beans were perfectly seasoned and mashed. The coffee was sweetened just right. Definitely would come here again and bring others with us.

Yelp
I set up a dinner res here on 2/26 to have my girlfriends meet my boyfriend for the first time, and I regret having done that. But first, let's start with the pros: Free parking behind the restaurant -- this in LA is always a plus. The beef brisket taco, potato taquitos, and la burrita (deconstructed burrito) were quite good. The marinade on the brisket was tasty. The trio of salsas (that we had to ask for) was also good, just small for a group of 4 to share. The server did not ask to offer us more salsa. We would have said yes, and/or gladly paid for extra. Now the CONS: We began with a round of drinks: watermelon margarita, pineapple-cucumber margarita, orange julio (an orange, pineapple, coconut milk agua fresca), and an iced horchata latte. These all sound great, right? Boy, were these the nastiest, most TERRIBLE cocktails we have ever had in our lives, and we're all pushing 40 here. The server said all of the drinks have fresh-pressed juices, which we applaud, but there was definitely something very off with the cocktails. Not only I, but the other 3 at my table agreed the cocktails were awful. When we let the server know, she had asked why. We honestly told her there was something off. Maybe the house tequila was not well-made. The combination of fruit juices and tequila was not mixed well at all. All we tasted was straight up tequila that reminded me of rubbing alcohol. No hint of sweetness, no salted rim, and there was also ZERO flavor of watermelon or cucumber pineapple. You couldn't help but stick your tongue out in grimace upon the first sip. Maybe it was an off day for the bartender, but these cocktails definitely needed to be checked for taste before sending out to the public. You taste as you make the cocktails just as you would taste when cooking. We sent the drinks back and had them replaced with horchata lattes instead, which was very HEAVY on ice and cinnamon. No proper horchata latte needs as much ice as this establishment gives. Because we all know with any beverage that's heavy-handed on ice means less actual beverage itself and a diluted one at that! And these are served in mason jars. The Caldo de Res soup was a large portion, and though it looked hearty, the flavor of the caldo (broth) was non-existent. It was very BLAND. The only saving grace was how hot it was, especially on a cold, rainy night. But for $16 a bowl, the execution in flavor of this soup was severely lacking. Both the mini quesadilla with mushrooms and a side of cilantro-garlic rice were oversalted. The salt needed to have been shared with the side of pinto beans, which we found to be bland. The interior of the upstairs room was very cold. If the heater was on, we didn't feel it. All of my friends mentioned how they felt cold as well, and we kept our jackets on the entire dining experience. Service was mediocre. It took quite awhile after being seated for our server to return to take our orders. When we asked for extra straws after the horchata lattes came, in replacement of the cocktails, she never returned. We waited some time before I got up to ask a different server as ours was nowhere to be found. Our server then came back a couple times to ask if all was OK. When I asked for the check, it took her some time to drop it off. I'm all about supporting small, female-owned, minority-owned small biz. And we all love Mexican cuisine having traveled to Oaxaca, Chiapas, Nayarit, and other parts of Mexico many times over the years. I was very excited to check out this restaurant. Unfortunately, there were too many things here that were lackluster to merit a return.

Yelp
Don't tell my mom but this pozole rojo is comparably delicious haha!!! It comes packed with pork, not the traditional pork neck bones, but instead with chunks of meat and not the nuisance of bones. I also had the tacos de papa and they were delish!!! Love that they are corn tortillas and made into rolled tacos. I do wish they came with more crema and more queso cotija. My friend had the burrito and was also satisfied. The rice and beans are also pretty authentic and fresh. I like that they made regular fried rice and not red rice to provide a neutral flavor to the entree. I also had the flan and it was so decadent. Definitely tasted a day old but it was still really good. Can't wait to try all of their other menu items!!!

Yelp
What a great spot to find! Chichen tinga plate was exceptional with spicy chicken , garlic rice and beans. Brisket taco was nicely done and Turkey albondigas soup was straight out of grandmas kitchen . Very efficient service and reasonable prices too. Bravo!

Yelp
Very tasty but portions are smaller than average. Service was great! Would definitely be back but if you're hungry expect to order more. They have their own parking too.

Yelp
Love the ambiance of this restaurant! Super cute! Good food , drinks, and great service! This is my first time going here and the experience was amazing. We went for dinner and the waitress was very knowledgeable of the menu and had great recommendations. Highly recommend! Will definitely come back for brunch or even a small get together with friends and family.

Yelp
We went to this restaurant as first timers and instantly were introduced to the delightful interior & treated with top notch customer service :) We were hesitant at first with the amount of customers in the restaurant but Claire kindly suggested we sit at the bar while we waited for a table. While at the bar Claire made us a few delicious drinks and we were seated soon after. The meals were as good as their service! Definitely coming back for another great time

Yelp
This place seemed really cute from the outside and we were looking forward to trying. When we arrived, the manager greeted us and told us we can sit outside. Outside was a tiny circular patio table with a few uncomfortable metal chairs. She brought us some serapes mentioned that "if it got cold" she would turn the patio heaters on. Things seemed off to a solid start. Put our drink and appetizer orders in pretty quickly. We were then brought water glasses that could hold roughly 2oz of water with no refill carafe. Our appetizers came and we attempted to place our food orders. The menu specifically refers to enchiladas with chicken or cheese and my friend placed her order for the enchilada enmoladas with cheese. The server looked at her like she was a complete idiot "yeah all the enchiladas come with cheese." My friend motions to the menu where the options are stated and the server glared and mentioned something about the menu changing frequently lol. While we ordered, our drinks were delivered. While it was a nice gesture to get those out ASAP, interrupting the server taking an order might not be the best time to do so. My margarita was so strong, I couldn't drink it. After our drinks were delivered, we sat. And sat. A different server kept coming by and asking us if there were any plates she could take, but not offering any updates on food. By an hour and 20 mins in we were cold, dehydrated from collectively 8oz of water, and hungry. We asked the manager if they knew when our food would be ready and if it hadn't been fired yet, to please cancel. She said she would go check. She never confirmed with us personally, but the replacement server arrived shortly with the bill with everything (2 margaritas, 1 nonalcoholic beverage, esquites, guac & chips) for $70.00. Our server meekly apologized, but as a hospitality professional, it rubbed me the wrong way that the manager didn't come out, apologize, or give us a discount on our bill.

Yelp
Great happy hour. Had a rough day at work and decided I needed a midweek drink or two. Happy hour Mon-Fri 3-6. Highlights are the $4 beer, $8 tequila shots, $10 margaritas, and food specials. Inside is bright, comfortable, with homestyle decor. Plenty of seating inside. There's also a nice patio in the back. It's a good spot for groups or a casual date. The food specials were delicious. Got the tacos, mini quesadilla, and elote. I liked all of it. Will be coming back to try more. Service was good. Friendly staff. There's a small parking lot in back or street parking within a block or two. If you're looking for a good happy hour around Highland Park, definitely check them out.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! I feel so lucky stumbling upon it while looking up a place for brunch. There is parking in the lot and ample amount of outdoor patio seating (front and back). They have an attention to detail with the food and flavours--it is sooo good. And the staff, ambiance of the the space, match the quality of the whole experience. Sweet Plantains: perfect amount of sweetness w/ coconut yogurt dip Ceviche with Tostones: lime/lemon cooked shrimp w/ crunchy plantain tostones Corn with zuchini: cheesy--- so good! Shreded beef burrito: flavorful & tender (the rice and beans were also delicious) Pumpkin spice cream on Cafe de olla: The spice cream was premade-- whipped with pumpkin bits .. it tasted like fall in my cup on top of the olla. While we're waiting for our food, the owner came by to gift us a bag of roasted coffee beans from his family's coffee farm and gave us a brief overview of how it all came together. It was a cherry on top to the whole experience. I highly recommend this spot-- I will be back!!

Yelp
When a ceviche craving turned into my accidental first food vblog lol. Pocha LA was such a gem in the heart of Highland Park. Yelp
We came to Pocha without reservations on a Saturday evening and were seated right away which was lucky because I hear it can get pretty busy! To start, our server asked if we wanted some chips and guac - we said sure, and then marveled at how large the order was. But unbeknownst to us, the server had brought us a large instead of the regular size. We asked for a few more chips during the meal since we had a massive bowl of guac, and they said sure and that was that. Our tacos were all totally fine and reasonably priced. But when we got the bill, we found out they had charged us for the large guac (almost $10) and an extra $2.50 for a chip refill. I really wish we had been told the pricing or had been offered to choose between the small and large, because what we though we were paying $5 for ended up being $12.50 altogether. I'd maybe come back if I was in the area, but it wasn't a standout experience.

Yelp
I would like to say that I was very excited to dine here after reading so many articles about its creativity but it fell short of my expectations. For starters we ordered tostones and chips with salsa. The tostones arrived after we were pretty much done with our lunch and they clearly had been sitting as they were not hot and crispy like tostones normally are, but instead were lukewarm and chewy. They needed more salt as they tasted very bland. The chips were delicious and the salsa was flavorful but they served little thimble cups of the salsa so we had to ask for more salsa. The chip was much larger than the actual salsa thimble so you could not dip the chip, this makes no sense. The tacos were good but not enough to bring us back sadly. Had hoped this would've been a real treat.

Yelp
Service was excellent and location comfortable and good for our group.. we basically had a room to ourselves and the A/C was pumping. The food was solid and tasted good. I would say the food was maybe 4 stars but the service and the ambiance bumped it up to 4.5 stars, rounded to 5. Not that the food was bad, it wasn't, but it was not 5 star for me. That said, I ate everything and enjoyed it. No one had complaints and the pricing was not that bad. I would come back to this place and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good location for yourself or a group. Try it!
