I set up a dinner res here on 2/26 to have my girlfriends meet my boyfriend for the first time, and I regret having done that. But first, let's start with the pros:
Free parking behind the restaurant -- this in LA is always a plus.
The beef brisket taco, potato taquitos, and la burrita (deconstructed burrito) were quite good. The marinade on the brisket was tasty. The trio of salsas (that we had to ask for) was also good, just small for a group of 4 to share. The server did not ask to offer us more salsa. We would have said yes, and/or gladly paid for extra.
Now the CONS:
We began with a round of drinks: watermelon margarita, pineapple-cucumber margarita, orange julio (an orange, pineapple, coconut milk agua fresca), and an iced horchata latte. These all sound great, right?
Boy, were these the nastiest, most TERRIBLE cocktails we have ever had in our lives, and we're all pushing 40 here. The server said all of the drinks have fresh-pressed juices, which we applaud, but there was definitely something very off with the cocktails. Not only I, but the other 3 at my table agreed the cocktails were awful.
When we let the server know, she had asked why. We honestly told her there was something off. Maybe the house tequila was not well-made. The combination of fruit juices and tequila was not mixed well at all. All we tasted was straight up tequila that reminded me of rubbing alcohol. No hint of sweetness, no salted rim, and there was also ZERO flavor of watermelon or cucumber pineapple. You couldn't help but stick your tongue out in grimace upon the first sip.
Maybe it was an off day for the bartender, but these cocktails definitely needed to be checked for taste before sending out to the public. You taste as you make the cocktails just as you would taste when cooking.
We sent the drinks back and had them replaced with horchata lattes instead, which was very HEAVY on ice and cinnamon. No proper horchata latte needs as much ice as this establishment gives. Because we all know with any beverage that's heavy-handed on ice means less actual beverage itself and a diluted one at that! And these are served in mason jars.
The Caldo de Res soup was a large portion, and though it looked hearty, the flavor of the caldo (broth) was non-existent. It was very BLAND. The only saving grace was how hot it was, especially on a cold, rainy night. But for $16 a bowl, the execution in flavor of this soup was severely lacking.
Both the mini quesadilla with mushrooms and a side of cilantro-garlic rice were oversalted. The salt needed to have been shared with the side of pinto beans, which we found to be bland.
The interior of the upstairs room was very cold. If the heater was on, we didn't feel it. All of my friends mentioned how they felt cold as well, and we kept our jackets on the entire dining experience.
Service was mediocre. It took quite awhile after being seated for our server to return to take our orders. When we asked for extra straws after the horchata lattes came, in replacement of the cocktails, she never returned. We waited some time before I got up to ask a different server as ours was nowhere to be found. Our server then came back a couple times to ask if all was OK. When I asked for the check, it took her some time to drop it off.
I'm all about supporting small, female-owned, minority-owned small biz. And we all love Mexican cuisine having traveled to Oaxaca, Chiapas, Nayarit, and other parts of Mexico many times over the years. I was very excited to check out this restaurant.
Unfortunately, there were too many things here that were lackluster to merit a return.
