Best Restaurants in Austin’s Rosedale Neighborhood | Eater Austin

"The growing Austin poke mini-chain offers Hawaiian flavors in the form of raw marinated fish bowls. The Yowza Yuzu with yuzu kosho (a tangy Japanese condiment) is particularly nice. Takeout orders can be placed online or in person; there are Uber Eats and DoorDash deliveries; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in areas." - Darcie Duttweiler

Poke-Poke - Review - Austin - The Infatuation

"You know those fast-casual poke restaurants you see everywhere now - the ones that feel kind of like a Chipotle, but with raw fish? Poke-Poke is not that. We like our poke fish-focused, thick-cut, and marinated in the classic dressings - salt or soy sauce, sometimes rice wine vinegar or sesame oil - and topped with some green onion and sesame seeds. And that’s exactly what you’ll get here. Of course, you can add additional toppings as well, but the quality of ingredients and the lack of a Subway-esque assembly line is what makes this one of our favorite bowls of poke in town. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary" - Nicolai McCrary

I ordered from doordash.. I love Poke Bowls, but this store had the very smallest portion I ever had. The foos taste good the rice very hard.. I'd pay for 2 things 1 poke bowl and 1 cucumber salad.. cost me $24 .. i would recommend the owner. Please change your packaging for take-home order. This is so disappointing too small order. I saw the pictures dine in portion totally different.. i wouldn't recommend order togo....

Google
$17.54 for take away salmon poke. This is the price for the double scoop. I would say it was filling, but can’t justify the cost again. If I was a guy, no way would this have been enough. Worker at the counter was nice. Store vibe was collegey and chill. Lots of topping and sauce options but all in all was pretty mid. 2.5/5

Google
I paid $18 for this and expected either a large portion or for it to be tasty. Unfortunately, I got neither. This place really disappointed me. I don't understand what I paid so much money for. Poke bowl is my favorite dish, and I eat it very often in different places. Unfortunately, this was the worst poke bowl I've ever had and the smallest portion for such a price. I won't be coming back here and wouldn't recommend anyone come here.

Google
I didn’t really know what to expect when I pulled up the the sketchy looking gas station. But man was I surprised and satisfied with the poke! I was hesitant regarding the portion size considering the price ($18) but it was more than enough! I’m astounded by how well marinated their fresh poke is. I got the Big 50/50 with the Sambal Salmon and it was honestly so good. The atmosphere was chill, the guy working in the front was nice, the proportions were perfect, and my order (for takeout) was incredibly fast. Overall, don’t just a poke spot by its cover, this place is definitely a hidden gem in Austin :) -G Approved 🙌🏼💯

Google
This surfer chain belongs in this tiny “strip mall” / gas station center. It is tiny and barely furnished. The menu is simple and direct. This place has ruined me on poke anywhere else in this town. I have brought two Hawaii dwellers and they are both poke snobs. This place impressed them and is now their poke spot too! If they have it or can they will do dietary accommodations. They even have Tamari for gluten free folks.

Sophie Ting

Google
Little tiny poke place. They feel more authentic than large chains. Portions are smaller but they prepare it well. You can make your own or use one of their preferred recipe. Some is quite spicy.

Google
Love it! This takes me right back to my first introduction to poke in Honolulu bought at the back of a market. I've tried a lot of poke places in town and glad this finally crossed my path. Lookin' forward to actually dining in. Thanks for bringing it to Austin!

Google
This place is a jewel. We were randomly looking for a quick place to grab a bite and stumbled upon Poke-Poke. We almost let the outside of the place turn us away, but I'm all for a small place with worn paint beside a gas station. The food was AMAZING, and the atmosphere was quaint bit busy. The spicy tuna was EVERYTHING. This is a must go!! It's small, so you may or may not find a place to sit.

Yelp
You can order by the half-pound or full pound instead of a small, rice-heavy bowl! I got 1 lb of ahi tuna for $19 and 1 lb of salmon for $23, which felt like a much better deal than most poke spots charging $15+ for a bowl with just a few bites of fish. If you actually want a solid portion of poke, this is a great option. What I liked: The salmon was very fresh - I ordered The OG salmon poke, and it was flavorful and well-marinated. The fish had a nice, smooth texture and absorbed the soy sauce and sesame oil well. No weird aftertaste or fishiness--just fresh, clean flavors. Portions are generous - A full pound of fish made for a very satisfying meal, which isn't always the case with poke. If you don't want rice or fillers, ordering by weight is the way to go. What I didn't love: Ahi tuna wasn't as fresh - It started off tasting fine, but as I kept eating, I noticed a slight fishy taste, especially in the middle portion. Not terrible, but not the best either. Next time, I'd skip the tuna and just get salmon if that cannot be improved. Seasoning is strong and a bit oily for me. The marinade is on the heavier side, with a lot of soy sauce and sesame oil. It's flavorful, but personally, I prefer a lighter touch so the fish itself can stand out more. If you're used to milder poke, this might be a bit much. I was just looking for a simple, no-frills poke spot, and this is a solid choice. The salmon was great, the value was good, and the flavors were bold. Not sure about service since I chose delivery.

Yelp
Was craving a poke bowl and this place was nearby. They have more Hawaiian style poke than others which was great! I got a big bowl with rice and toppings and it was very reasonably priced and more filling than I had imagined as the container looked smaller than I thought it would be. Service was great as they showed me their options for premade bowls and different sizes. The place is small and cozy and a little hard to find at first located on a corner behind a gas station.
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
The poke was okay but for close to $20 for one person was expecting a lot more overall. I did the half tuna half salmon which was okay but I've had better locally at a similar price point. The rice might just be a different style but it was a little too soft and almost mushy for my liking. It also took nearly ten minutes to come out which seemed a bit long when they didn't seem super busy and I would think everything is premade. It might just not be my style, but definitely not a spot I would look to come back to.

Yelp
This is a chain restaurant. Each of the Poke Poke I've been to have the same menu, great service and fresh food. There is plenty of seating inside and out!

Yelp
This is probably going to be as close to authentic Hawaiian poke as you'll find here in Austin. I will say that I'm not a huge fan of authentic poke--I find that it to be too salty, and I usually only like the creamier poke options. I got the cucumber/avocado salad, shoyu poke, and the creamy poke. Everything was really fresh and well seasoned with lots of onions and sauce. I think it's just a bit too salty for me, but I can still tell that it's a good option for you if you're a huge fan of traditional Hawaiian poke.

Yelp
My wife and I had gone to Hawaii in March of this year and had some amazing poke. We were inspired to find some good poke here in Austin. Poke-Poke was VERY satisfying. I had never heard of it or even driven in this area before. Definitely a gem in this neighborhood. The ambience gave us a "vintage" feel--like it deserves to be functioning somewhere near a beach. There's not a lot of seating inside, but they do have tables outside as well. We were lucky enough not to come during a lunch rush. The woman who took our order was very kind and professional. My wife had the "Lil Poke with a brown rice base and the Aloha Poke recipe." I had the "50/50 Poke with a white rice base and the OG Recipe." Both were delicious!!! The fish was fresh, the rice was soft, and it was all super flavorful!!! We were very impressed. Portioning was also just right--I didn't leave feeling super full, or still hungry. We'll definitely be back when we want our poke fix!!

Yelp
Love coming to this spot when I'm in the area. The poke is by far the best in austin. The store is a little small but there's seating both inside and out and makes for a great lunch spot. The staff is always super friendly and have good recommendations. The price is about what you would pay at any other poke place but I find that most places will add more sides and rice than fish. Here the protein is what stands out! I recommend anyone in Austin come check this place out if you want true poke.

Yelp
My husband and my usual go-to poke place has been undergoing construction for months, so we finally decided that it's time to venture out and explore a new option. While scrolling through the Yelp page, we came across this establishment and decided to give it a try since it was close enough to where we were and had amazing ratings! We ordered the JT's Poke and a small salmon poke with sriracha aioli and edamame. We were first struck by how "lil" it was, but I think the small size was pretty filling enough for a light lunch. But what we were more surprised by, was how flavorful the poke was! It's definitely a traditional, Hawaiian poke, and I highly recommend you to order from the preset menu because their combination of condiments to fish to veggies is spot on. Even though we are more used to the "Chipotle-style", salad-like pokes, we definitely enjoyed our authentic pokes and look forward to visiting again.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this hole in the wall eatery yesterday and I'm glad I did. As a native Texan who lived in LA for two years, I became very fond of all the yummy poke on the West Coast. Poke-Poke satisfied my craving for authentic and delicious poke. Their menu is a bit confusing but the staff will gladly help you out. The dining room is not open right now but there are a couple of outdoor seating options to enjoy your poke in the sunshine. I am excited to return back to this establishment and try more of their delicious poke. Maybe next time I'll try their fish on weekly special.

Aude L.

Yelp
I was craving traditional poke - not the kind with all the toppings and barely any fish. This hits the spot if you're looking for quality Hawaiian-style poke. The restaurant itself is very casual and you can definitely tell most of its business is to-go orders. We ordered JT's poke and the Yowza Yuzu. Both amazing. The sauces add flavor without completely overpowering the fish. We will for sure be back.

Yelp
Never in my life have I been so happy to have forgotten to make my lunch and need to grab something to eat. Since starting my new job, I have been bringing my lunch, however I have been very curious about this poke place I see everyday l. I forgot lunch today and decided to try it. Ordered online. Super easy to do. Got the cucumber tomato avocado salad and the spicy tuna poke with carrots, cucumber and ginger. Added one scoop of ahi tuna. Pick up was very easy. They had it ready and in the cooler in a bag. Since it was first time trying it, I didn't realize this protocol however staff was super sweet and kindly guided this newbie. So sweet and very friendly. And now to the best part... the food. Blown away. I started with the salad. The flavor is unique. Its crunchy but tender. And during such a crazy heat wave- this salad is refreshing and satisfying. On to the poke. Wow my mind is blown. Flavor is out of this world good. Ingredients fresh, juicy, tender. I was never expecting to get such fresh, soft ahi in a million year being land locked. This ahi made me feel like I was on the coast again. The extra scoop of ahi means an EXTRA ton of ahi tuna. Sooo much. I literally can't believe how incredible this poke is. Slightly spicy, tender, fresh. I just kept stuffing my face. Even with all that, I have leftovers for tomorrow! I WILL be back. Between small location, local vibe. The incredible food and killer staff- found a new favorite!!! Thankfully I am in walking distance so I dont get toooo fat with this yummy food.

Yelp
Delicious and fresh. I definitely stop here when ever I am in the area. The season ahi are always a hit. Sauce variations are great too.
google avatar

Yelp
Love this place only draw back is sometimes the rice isn't made right. Today is one of those days. The rice is a little under cooked so has a tough crunch to it. With that being said the flavors are always amazing and the service is super welcoming. I love this place being so close for my lunch breaks.
google avatar

Yelp
First time here today and it was pretty perfect. The customer service was good too. Will be back again. This place is super cute in the rosedale neighborhood.
google avatar

Angela M.

Yelp
I've been here a few times. It is a traditional poke spot. I love both types of formats here though. You get a great amount of food and it's fresh and melt in your mouth. Not too many menu choices so it's not overwhelming. Very friendly people working there to help you navigate the menu also. Not super cheap, but honestly why would you want that with marinated fish!

Yelp
I've been coming to Poke-Poke on and off since before the pandemic. But lately, I've become addicted to their O.G. salmon poke and Hawaiian Sun drinks. I swallowed a piece of scale on Tuesday, but they comped my drink when I told them two days later. They said to call them immediately the next time it happens. Their poke is reminiscent of the poke I've had in Hawaii. Delicious and addictive!
google avatar

Jackie X.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday night an hour before they closed. Keep in mind they get a little low on fish later in the day and will not sell full pounds of poke. The restaurant was a cute little place with a to-go window to order from (lobby was closed). I got a half pound of the spicy tuna poke with tobiko, jalapeño, cucumber, and carrots. My boyfriend got a half pound of the aloha tuna poke with pineapple, edamame, and carrots. We took it home and ate it with our own rice and their to-go packets of soy sauce. Both dishes were fresh and delicious! A great price for a solid amount of tuna. I enjoy a good poke bowl but sometimes I just want some more poke and this was a great option. Would come again to try other flavors and the salmon!

Yelp
I walked over to Poke-Poke for lunch last week with a friend that lives in the area. We ordered ahead on Toast (easy), and it was ready on time when we arrived. The menu is simple, which I appreciated since a lot of poke menus have about 100 options and are more filler than fish! Poke-Poke is all about the fish! I tried the OG (Ahi tuna, shoyu, sesame oil, white and green onion, and sesame seeds), which was really simple and delicious. They have several base options, and I chose to do half white rice and half edamame. I loved the option, because it was extra protein and veggies! My only complaint is the rice was a little dried out, kind of stuck in a clump that I had to break apart with chopsticks. It was a good, simple, delicious, and pretty healthy meal. I'm jealous of my friend who lives right by it!

Cayla P.

Yelp
Best poke I've had in Austin so far! Service was fast, prices are decent, and they have vegetarian options available
google avatar

Anna G.

Yelp
Hands down the best poke place ever! The fish was fresh and their flavor combinations are delicious. It's a small cozy shop, you can eat indoors or outside. The service was great and I received my food pretty quick. I highly recommend this place for a delicious lunch!
google avatar

Edwyn A.

Yelp
If your looking for a more authentic poke experience with big chunks of tuna this is your go to. The other spots in town are following more of chipotle or subway model and here you just have your classic poke and few other ones but basically it's shoyu, onions, green onion, sesame seeds, and chilis of varying amounts. They have varying sizes too and you can opt with or without rice. They are fairly quick and attentive and you won't be waiting too long to try this poke. It's located in a small retail area right next to a gas station and there are a few parking spots out front.
google avatar

Mariel T.

Yelp
LOVE THIS SPOT. Best poke in Austin. My go-to's are the Big Jim and Aloha bowls. I get the lil ahi (4oz) + base (white rice bc I am obsessed with rice - as a child I'd cry if my pizza didn't come with rice!!) and it's the perfect size for lunch. They have a promo code in their website (EATWELL but may change) so be sure to add that plus a little more towards their tips bc they are working hard!!

Tracey Z.

Yelp
Ordered a Signature Shiso Poke bowl. It was super spicy (I'm not a fan of spice) and NO shiso. I added avocado for 2 extra dollars and received 3 very small chunks...yes i did count them....only 3 for 2 extra dollars. Im really sad about the Shiso though. Come on Poke-Poke...I paid $21 for a portion the size of my fist only to have ingredients left out that was suppose to be featured.
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
I'm so glad this place is in my neighborhood. The poke is so good I won't even deduct a star for not having the açai bowls any longer. Seaweed salad, it's great. This place fits the bill for something special or just a regular good meal. Currently there's no eating inside and it's extremely pandemic safe. So far it's a success with every friend we shared it with. And yes, I'm headed over there in a few minutes to pick some up!
google avatar

Nicole F.

Yelp
This is a cute local poke place that really gives off authentic Hawaiian poke vibes. You can tell that it's different from other chains partly because of its simplicity. The owner was super friendly and was very happy to answer any questions we had! There are 2 portion sizes, but honestly they don't seem like too big of a difference? But I could be wrong. The small portion size fed me and kept me somewhat satisfied. I heard the tuna was excellent, but the salmon for me was okay; it wasn't the freshest type of salmon that melts in your mouth. Considering we're in Austin, which is land locked, I think it was pretty good! I would like to try the tuna the next time I come here.
google avatar

Michelle R.

Yelp
Amazing and super fresh fish. Having celiac disease, I often worry about cross contamination but they do so well here. When you mention you need gluten free, they take it seriously and offer either coco aminos or tamari & use a clean bowl.
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
Driven by this place never knowing it was there. Not anymore. Wanted poke. Like, 10 minutes ago. So I find Poke Poke on the map and think how did I miss this place all these years. Get in the car and in minutes I'm there. Then I'm home with two of the freshest Poke bowls ever. Thank you Poke Poke.
google avatar

Ed B.

Yelp
small dine in area, outdoor seating- next to a gas station. DO NOT MISS THIS! fresh ingredients, helpful staff. my first time eating this style food, thoroughly enjoyed. 10-12 per person
google avatar

Dee L.

Yelp
If you are looking for Hawaiian style poke, this is it! The fish was tasted fresh and was perfectly seasoned. My favorite was the traditional spicy ahi. I really liked the 50/50 options for tuna and salmon for those who like both or want to try both. So happy to have found this place in Austin!
google avatar

Mia W.

Yelp
I got the 50/50 poke and I was happy to see that they fill the cup all the way up the the rim with rice and poke. I loved the fish and the seasoning on the fish and the toppings were really good too, the only thing I have to say was the rice was clumped together and was hard to pull apart (I'm aware it's supposed to be sticky) but that kinda made it hard to eat. The service was amazing and I'm really glad I found this place!
google avatar

Jocelyne V.

Yelp
It is hard to find a good place in Austin that is authentic. This is a great place if you are really looking for a fresh poke, I had the ahi with the OG sauce with a base of white rice and seaweed salad, it was absolutely delicious. The reason why I took a star off is because the employee that was helping me was not very friendly, and almost all of the toppings are available at an extra charge. Overall, good poke, a bit pricey but good quality.
google avatar

Christina P.

Yelp
Y'all about amazing!!! Thank you for my last fantastic sushi meal before I deploy!! I miss miss y'all dearly! Melts like butter in my mouth geez!!!
google avatar

Jerry L.

Yelp
This is the best poke Ive bad outside Hawaii. The fact you can buy it by the half pound or the full pound makes it even better. Take it home and munch on the poke by itself, in your own salad, or make poke nachos! Price is very reasonable as well, under 20 dollars for a pound of fish. The best poke in Austin. Currently its takeout only (better for me since I can make my own poke nachos with HEB tortilla chips).
google avatar

Christina H.

Yelp
I don't like being wrong, but in this case, I'm so glad I was. I usually make my own poké bowl, but for some reason, I was drawn to trying a signature bowl. I didn't think a signature bowl was going to be as satisfying as making my own, but like I said before, I'm glad I was proven wrong! I tried the Shiso Salmon Poke, which perfectly brought the whole bowl together. I LOVE the marination of this poke, which includes sesame oil, shoyu, rice wine vinegar, and sambal.
google avatar

Kimberly K.

Yelp
This place is a all flavor, no gimmick (ahem, i'm looking at you, spicy cheetos) With amazing mix ins you simply can't find ANYWHERE else in Austin like, shiso, pickled limu (fermented Hawaiian seaweed), sea asparagus (sea beans!!) and macadamia nuts. You can't beat that, no way. Their sauces are the best tasting and they offer a daily special of $3 off the premixed house special poke of the day. The shiso salmon with limu, sea beans and macadamia nuts w extra sesame seeds is my fav. They also offer a stewed chicken and rice dish, pad thai flavored tofu and acai bowls. I usually grab a canned green tea. If I'm at the Congress location, they have kombucha too. I do wish they offered kombucha at both locations. The Hancock location is tiny! Just a few parking spots but conveniently located for me. The Congress location is brighter and bigger, more parking. Do your mouth a favor and check out this Hawaiian poke!
google avatar

Marley S.

Yelp
Poke poke is all in all a pretty good place. I love that they do traditional poke and don't try to crowd it with too many toppings. That being said I did find it a little annoying that they have a sign on their drink fridges that the yellow ahi is fresh. Unfortunately the Ahi is previously frozen as I can tell from being a local born and raised on the Island of Kauai. Fresh Ahi has a very tender almost jelly like texture dark red look and frozen is slightly pink tougher texture. I however understand it is hard to get fresh Ahi in Texas without it being outrageously expensive, but it would be nice for full disclosure. I ordered the Aloha poke with came with chili flakes, rice vinegar, sea salt and aloha shoyu. It was fast however I didn't like how the rice vinegar cooked the fish (like lemon juice) and it's got some kick to it if you don't eat a lot of spicy foods. Either way that's my own preference but I think next time I'll order the OG. I will be back! PS: They don't take cash and don't a sign saying so, so make sure you have a card!!
google avatar

Gabriel L.

Yelp
This place is actually good but has the potential to be a lot better. The poke is always fresh, but within the last 3 times I've been there, the rice is always hot, which doesn't go well with the poke. Also the cleanliness of this place is usually not up to par. There's always trash that noticeable needs to be taken out. Overall, it's good, I recommend it, but the business itself needs to tighten up.

Michaela A.

Yelp
Literally the tiniest overpriced portion of poke. This whole things was 16 bucks and it is basically 1/2 a cup of poke and two pieces of kale. But it did taste good just not a good portion size.
google avatar

Shveta M.

Yelp
Finally made it to the second location of Poke Poke. It's very unassuming but don't worry, the Poke is out of this world! I like that the menu is pretty self explanatory and not overwhelming. Choose your size, then your rice, then which bowl you want and if you want any add-ons. And then enjoy! I wasn't quite sure if I should have ordered the little or big, so I asked the staff. He said he typically gets the little unless he's skipped breakfast. He's also 6'3" and if he advised me to go with the litttle, I'll listen :) I got the spicy bowl with brown rice and added seaweed salad. Mmmmmmmm, it was a true delight. Sat outside and enjoyed it with a friend who got the Aloha bowl with salmon. Both of us were satisfied and I can't wait to go back! They're doing it right here. From the staff, to the high quality fish, and a great place to get your fix of Poke, you can't go wrong!
google avatar

Mahesh P.

Yelp
"It's Poke. It's Great. Just Go" ^^^^ That really pretty much sez. it all. If you need more, well, the owner is friendly, as is the staff, the poke is stellar (don't get the brown rice tho'. seriously. why would you inflict that on yourself?), and there are various canned/bottled things to drink. It's a brilliant place for lunch - the service is fast, and the food excellent. Couple of tips though 1. As with most things poke, the simpler the better 2. Don't get the brown rice 3. The wasabi-poke now has a lot less wasabi in it - if you want it the old way, ask for it (or for a side of wasabi!)
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
This unassuming attachment to a gas station has proven to be the best poke I've ever had (not sure how it compares to the real deal though). Although I had my hesitations from the outside, the fish was definitely fresh, and the store was very clean inside. My friend and I each had the lil portion with rice and we both left very satisfied. There were not that many add-ins but they added the perfect pairing with their sauces. They are also generous with the sauce, which I personally love. All in all, a cute little place to visit not too far from downtown Austin. Come in during happy hour for additional savings!

Aa B.

Yelp
I like the food here, it's quick and hits the spot everything for that reason I come back. My only complaint is that I do think it's about a dollar too expensive per person for the amount of food you get. For this only reason do I not give it 5 stars, a lower price would make me come back more often and leave with a better feeling and not of being slightly ripped of. Rice is very inexpensive. And that's half of what you get (not like the establishment is extremely comfortable either) so why I am being charged so much?
google avatar

Janne T.

Yelp
This is where all my money would go if I live in Austin. Really... I refused to go anywhere else because I made that mistake a couple of times and nope, not doing that anymore. This is as close as it could get to authentic poke from Hawaii. The fresh Ahi, right amount of ponzu and perfectly cooked rice.
google avatar

Ed M.

Yelp
My family loves Poke-Poke! We order pretty often as it is fresh and reminds of our visits to Hawaii. Very flavorful and always consistent.
google avatar

Omar M.

Yelp
This might be the closest Poke joint to the office. I'll have to look it up. If it is then I'm good with that. Their poke is fresh and delicious. Simple enough, right? Customer service is great and they definitely have that neighborhood, cozy feel. Check 'em out sometime!
google avatar

Jen B.

Yelp
The poke is ok. A bit pricy for what you get. Ordered two poke bowls and a drink and it came to $42. Adding avocado costs $2. Goodness gracious The fish was fresh. The sauces are good. I just don't think you get enough value for what you get.

Caroline C.

Yelp
BEST POKE I HAVE EVER HAD! It's so fresh and has really high quality ingredients. Just amazing food and really sweet staff.
google avatar

Joey R.

Yelp
Best poke-poke I've ever had.....shiso salmon has me hooked. Staff is exceptional, I'd go back just hang out

Yelp
Really nice guys running the shop the day we were here. It's a poke chain, but they provide a good portion of poke, that's pretty good quality, especially when considering how far from the ocean we are. They let us try some premium grade Tuna and it was actually a bit fishy. The tuna we had in our bowl compared with the special one they let us try tasted much better. Go figure. Atmosphere is no frills, but clean and gets the job done. Would definitely stop in here again.
