"Houston-born poke bowl shop Pokeology has closed the doors to its first standalone location less than a year after opening. According to Houston Food Finder, the shop was forced to close its Sawyer Yards outpost due to overhead costs that were 'simply unsustainable,' and chef Jason Liao is currently working on a new, as-yet-undisclosed restaurant concept." - Amy McCarthy

Cute space! It’s near my house, so of course I had to support it. I am a fan of Chef Jason as well. Really great customer service, huge portions, and standard price for poke around Houston. The quality is what’s important. I’ve gotten food poisoning at another poke right down the street. I lost my trust for poke as a whole, but it’s definitely been won back by Pokeology.

New poke (raw fish salad) spots have been popping up all over Houston these days. Pokéology was next on the list to try. It's located at the back of Doc Holliday's bar in Rice Village. Parking is always a pain in Rice Village, but you could find street parking, paid lot parking, or paid garage parking nearby. We went on a Tuesday night, so we thought it would have been pretty chill. Since it's located inside of a bar, the music was blasting, and there were all sorts of rowdy people there, even on a weekday. If you don't want to sit in the bar, they have a nice outdoor patio with tables as well. Overlooking the menu, they provide 6 different types of poke bowls, or you could build your own. I went for the Salmon Thaiviche bowl. They offer two sizes as well; Lite for $10 or Full for $12. I went for the full size as the bowls looked quite small. If you had Ono Poke nearby, Pokéology's full size looks like Ono Poke's regular size. Weak! Our bowls were delivered to our table, and I was able to serve myself some water from a water dispenser at the bar. The Salmon Thaiviche tasted good, but it was nothing spectacular. The Full size was still quite small for me, and I really don't eat that much. On top of being located in a bar, loud music, rowdy crowd, hard-to-find parking, the portion sizes, the price, this place ended up being "meh." I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here again. It's more of a "bonus" to enjoy this poke when out drinking in the area.

What has Rice been missing? Poké. That's right, raw fish in a bowl, with other scrumptious fixins thrown in. These folks have been doing pop events around town in preparation for the opening of their fixed location. I had the opportunity to check them out before, and am happy that they got the store front up and running. The service here is stellar! If you're lucky, you can get a sampler of their new menu items. They're pretty quick making the goods, but they do have a huge following at the moment, so you may be in for a wait if you hit at peak times. The wait is well worth it. Give it a shot!

This place offers BYO (Build Your Own) Poke Bowls! A lot of Japanese restaurants now in Houston are offering poke bowls on their menu but they are not customizable. This place on the other hand specializes on pokes so they offer a customizable one here! For their Step 3, where you pick your seafood, you can choose up to three kinds! For the sauces and other toppings, you can pick as much as you want. Their poke bowls were really good and fulfilling! The fish are always fresh and tasty! I really love the food here and can't wait to be back, again! :D

Good and fresh poke bowls. The flavors are good, but the portions are kind of small for what you are paying for. The service is very friendly and nice.

Better Poke places with faster service, better food environment. Felt like I was at Snap Kitchen, get it and go. Also about $2 more for smaller bowl than most Poke places with same price for larger bowl.

Yummmm! We are so glad for poké to finally hit the Third Coast! We had the salmon thaiviche, which was so fresh and perfect for a hot February day (82 degrees... c'mon Houston)! Definitely looking forward to coming back for lunch, which they're starting this coming week.
