Stop Number One on the 2009 Peruvian Chicken Smackdown!
Thanks to LAist, I've recently become aware of the existence of a popular type of chicken done in the Peruvian style. The chicken is cooked rotisserie style over an actual wood-burning fire. The result is a juicy, crispy skinned bird with a nice touch of smokiness. The two most popular institutions recommended were Pollo A La Brasa, and Pollos el Brasero on Pico, which was our first Sunday evening stop.
The little shop is located on a particular stretch of Pico that, unless you live or know someone who lives in the area, you would likely never stumble across it. It's a modest little joint tucked into a small corner that's easy to breeze past unless you are specifically looking for it. It helped that I had seen a picture of their sign ahead of time (and kudos to the twisted individual who created their signage with happy little chicks leaping over a wood burning fire). The inside was, as expected, a bit depressing, but (a) we were planning on doing take-out and (b) these types places are to be enjoyed for their food, not their ambiance.
We picked up a half chicken with a side of rice, beans, and salad. The chicken was the unmistakable star of the meal. Crispy, juicy, a touch salty, and down right tasty! In hindsight I would have added some tortillas to the order. The beans were on the soupy side, but good, the rice was just OK, and salad was unnecessary (plus they put beets on top of it...not a fan). WARNING: I wish I had read ahead of time about this powerful little sauce they serve on the side commonly referred to as "Aji." It was thick and green, and for some reason I assumed it was cilantro and/or avocado based. It's not. I took a hearty dunk with a piece of chicken into the sauce and was shortly experiencing several different fire alarms. Dip with caution.
All in all, it was an exceptional meal for $9 and change (that fed two people pretty well). I would definitely eat their chicken again, but would probably just pick up a whole chicken a la carte and supplement with my own side dishes.
