Pomona NYC - Review - Midtown - New York - The Infatuation

"Pomona is across the street from the Plaza Hotel and underneath the Paris Theater, and while you will find a $19 shrimp cocktail and a royal caviar eclair on the menu, this place doesn’t feel stuffy. There’s a casual bar space, a dining room with big orange leather booths, and music like Christine and the Queens on the speakers. The food is on the heavy side - they serve goose fat tater tots and a duck confit burger with duck skin mayo and duck jus. Come here when you want an upscale dinner and are OK with $40 entrees, but don’t want to feel out of place wearing jeans." - Matt Tervooren

Google
We are traveling for the holidays and stumbled across this hideaway restaurant. It wowed us from the stair way entry to the cuisine served. I ordered the Artic Char and it was so balanced. For dessert, we ordered the Baked Alaska and the Chocolate Mousse Espresso and, without a doubt in my mind, the chocolate mousse was off the charts. Everything was beautifully presented and wonderfully made! Thank you, Pomona!

Pomona is absolutely fabulous! The atmosphere is hip and modern, but also perfect for those seeking an intimate dining experience. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and extremely accommodating. Every dish our server recommended exceeded our expectations. The cocktails were wonderful as well. I highly recommend dining at Pomona!

-EDIT- after venue's reply below: No William, It's actually not typical for venue staff to upcharge patrons an arbitrary amount, and you’ll have a hard time convincing me otherwise. Consider the slim odds of your supposed percentage gratuity amount coming to exactly $1.00 even; highly unlikely when prices are seldom whole numbers and everything gets taxed. Your reply is well-packaged but logically deficient. Remember what happened to the piggy who built the straw house? There weren’t any notifications of auto-gratuity on receipt or elsewhere, and I clearly mentioned tip was left in cash, so I don’t see Pomona making an effort to be transparent. Loved the “be vigilant when signing your bill” and “your accidental generosity”; those are great spins, but you lost me at “Sometimes I find myself double tipping”. Surely you jest? Take your middle management fable back to kindergarten and include your job title next time when signing your name since you’re representing a business. Hugs, Artem -ORIGINAL- I have a strong dislike of places that weasel money out of you by overcharging your credit card more than what you signed off on. I find it disgusting. Just noticed my credit card charge came in at a dollar more, after I clearly put a different number on the check total. And this is after I left a 20% cash tip. I won't be calling my credit card company over a dollar, but you just lost a rating. Hope it was worth it.

Amazing food, great ambiance and service. The Savage Lounge is a great place to dance and have drinks with friends. Had my birthday party there this year. Also must try the truffle fries and the desserts!

Google
Everything was AMAZING. Very fresh, amazing and innovative cocktails. Order the shrimp cavatelli and the ribeye. “The left behind” is a fabulous cocktail for those who love Japanese whiskey. The ambiance and service were great—look for a special spot behind the bookcase!

Google
The service and food were exceptional! I recommend sampling many starters and entree’s. The oysters were amazing with a celery sorbet and the Mackerel Terrine with jalapeño broth wow! Then the entree’s slow cooked Halibut and Seared A-5 Miyazaki Wagyu absolutely crazy good! Then to end the Baked Alaska was the best dessert ever! Great music and service made Pomona a regular stop for me! Excellent!

Google
Pomona is exceptional. We were greeted at the door by attentive and friendly hostesses, who led us to coat check and then downstairs under dramatic stone arches. We emerged in the bar/dining room that was both modern and classic with touches of the namesake Pomona, Roman goddess of the harvest. Our dinner was exquisite (lobster, mackerel, black truffle escarole and mushroom “Diane”), and our cocktails were unique. My friend and I kept stopping mid-sentence to exclaim about the flavors. (Prometheus, GunSlinger, and Clover Club are must try.) It’s not easy to wow in this city of creative cocktails! Alex, who we learned used to be head bartender at speakeasy Gibson + Luce, made our night particularly memorable. Terrific service. Can’t wait to come back and see the adjacent lounge!!

Google
Great food, the night we were there they had a menu presented by the chef of Le Circ. Savage Lounge is in the back and a fun place, Snoop Dogg was a guest DJ when we were there.

Yelp
Five stars for the five course tasting menu at Pomona NYC. The staff was very accommodating and took into account the food restrictions of our party. The food was absolutely delicious. I don't want to spoil the menu for anyone but the steak was mouthwatering. The wine pairings complemented the menu perfectly! I was surprised how much is included and pleasantly at that. We also enjoyed the lounge after hours. It's a great space to dance and unwind. It was my gfs birthday and the staff has sparklers and champagne delivered to our table. She loves the experience and so did the rest of us. I'll be back here to enjoy it again!

Yelp
One of the biggest misses in my yelp career. This place only had a couple reviews but I figured to give it a try because it looked solid. Oh man, was I wrong!! First off the service was atrocious. The guy was pushy and kind of rude. Not a fan. The food was not much better. Everything had an insane amount of salt on it. Literally walk out of there with hypertension. My wife ordered the filet mignon with shephards pie side. Not very good. I had the duck burger which had an insane amount of gamey-ness. The flavor was more funk than umami. We love red wine and it was terrible as well. I think they gave us the bottom of the barrel. For sides we had the tater tots which werent tater tots. They were mashed potatoes formed into tater-tots. I also love golden beets but these were overcooked. The only good food here was the complimentary bread and fries. As for the atmosphere it didnt hit the mark. It is lacking any sort of identity and I do not think it is going to make it. I would not suggest coming.

Yelp
Ambiance was alright. The place is nice but hides a private club so lot of people crossing the dining room. It feels like they are hiding something and gives a weird ambiance to the main dining room. Service was ok. Food was alright. Good but classic. No risks taken there. Good option for lunch or a quick dinner at a good location.

Yelp
Ribeye for 2 ? Sure why not . Thought we were going to Beautique but quickly discovered a new establishment took its place. Should we still eat there ? Sure why not . With the new reno there's a bar downstairs and it's actually really pretty inside .. not to mention the food was dee-lish. Bookmarked for a quaint birthday dinner .

Yelp
Great food, great drinks, great ambiance. Good for dates anddd family dinners. The bar is beautiful, comfortable bar stool seating. The cocktails have unique ingredients and frequently updated. I've tried 5-6 different cocktails and they're all pleasant to drink. I've had cocktails with friends here on 2 different occasions. I have had dinner here about 4 times. The service is always excellent. The menu has a variety of options to satisfy most picky eaters. My favorites are the Rib Eye*** with the bone marrow sauce (it's just amazing!!!), the homemade cavatelli, and baked clams. Everything I've tried has been delicious. The deserts are yummy as well. The entrance is a bit hard to notice, but it is next to the Paris Theater, right across from the Plaza Hotel. The entrance opens up to a seating area and you have to walk downstairs to the restaurant. There's coat check if you need it and awesome art work on the walls that changes every so often. Overall, great spot to bring friends and family!

Yelp
Pricey for the food. We were exploring the area and saw this "new" place, however we didn't ask for the menu at the door. Felt weird leaving after getting just drinks so we ordered snacks, oysters and clams. Really pricey appetizers for the portions, and they weren't even tasty. The entire place is not visible from the entrance. We were escorted downstairs to our table. From the low lighting, it became apparent what type of place this was: expensive food, small portions, chic atmosphere. However, even for the style of restaurant they are going for, the decore makes it look like some type of diner. Definitely not a chicc midtown location. TL;DR: if you're looking for good food at s reasonable price, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a chic and trendy restaurant/lounge, look elsewhere.

Yelp
Go here now! Great experience last night at this cozy new restaurant! Ambience is great for conversations, service was impeccable and the food was beyond amazing. Foie gras mini sliders, goose fat tater tots, perfectly cooked NY strip, pistachio baked Alaska were outstanding.

Yelp
Stopped in for a pre-dinner cocktail, ended up staying for 3 drinks and several dishes. Cocktails were fresh and bartenders knowledgeable with insightful recommendations. We tried the clams, mushrooms, foie gras all absolutely delightful. Ambience is well executed - smart design incorporating original tile work with comfortable seating, lighting harmonized with the stylish vibe. Makes me wish I lived closer as this would easily be a regular spot in the rotation. Bravo, can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Let me tell you, Pomona NYC was certainly wonderful. Atmosphere is very unique and entertaining. Every menu item that we have ordered was super fresh and flavorful. Everyone was so accommodating. I'd definitely return.

Yelp
The ambiance was a wonderful surprise once you discovered what's below. We shared the Ribeye and a few sides, the Escarole being my choice of must have when you eat here. They have an expansive wine list but it was easy to pick out the perfect Cabarnet Sauvignon "Chimney Rock" with to add, a fair price point. I am not big on desert but the Baked Alaska was sent over and with intention won us over.

Yelp
Finally visited Pomona today; and my biggest regret is that I hadn't gone sooner. Everything I had was delicious I honestly have no complaints.

Yelp
Came here for a soft opening with friends and we had an amazing time and service. Every dish we tried was delicious, especially the rib eye to share and goose fat potato. The s'more dessert that was drizzled in rum and lit on fire! I would highly recommend.

Yelp
Went with my wife on a Friday evening. I was under impressed with the food and the presentation. Left having spent almost $200 and disappointed with the overall experience.

Yelp
It's ok, too expensive and small menu, couldn't find much... plus my waiter brought my food before my drink... he forgot my son's order... I was not impress.

Yelp
Solid American fare at reasonable prices considering the area. Had the beef short rib and it was quite special plus a much bigger portion than I expected. Wife had the branzino and said it was perfectly done and seasoned. For desert we shared the baked alaska which was amazing. The restaurant has a lounge in the back called Savage, which gets going around 11:30 and plays great music so we hung around there for more drinks. Drinks are fantastic at the bar in the restaurant but very lacking at Savage.

Yelp
Staff and ambiance were amazing!!! Everything we had was top notch. They brought us a birthday treat that was tasty and fun!!! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Amazing drinks and the nibbles I've had were all great (yes to the truffle fries). I haven't had a bad cocktail at the bar and it's a great little respite from the Central Park crowds.

Yelp
Great spot near our hotel! Welcoming and Outstanding service from when we first walked in the door until we left! Well crafted cocktails, the gunslinger was excellent. Appetizers and entrees were expertly cooked, the salmon was perfect and my wife loved the halibut! Deconstructed desserts were delicious and loved the carrot cake! No complaints regarding any part of our service, prices for dinner were comparable with consideration for the location. Would come back to try it again!

Yelp
Fabulous new restaurant. The service was excellent and food was delicious. The carrot and rock shrimp appetizer is divine. Arctic Char is also amazing.

Yelp
Excellent food and ambiance but too pricey for my wallet. Seated right away without a reservation.

Yelp
The good: Nice interior- cool, contemporary decor, but with enough spacing to allow privacy at each table. The food - the special gnocchi dish, the duck burger, and the Jerusalem artichokes were particular standouts. The bad: Readiness to serve at 5:30 - we had 5:30 reservations for pre-theater dinner which was clear when the reservations were made and the waitress knew when we were seated, but, apparently, there were "technical problems" so our cocktail order never made it to the bar and there was a lot of furniture being moved around kind of killing any ambience. Service in general: despite knowing we were on a pre-theater schedule we had to hunt down our waitress a couple times even though there were only 2 or 3 other tables seated. And dessert/after-diner drinks (which were not a serious consideration after our cocktail problems) were not an option as we had hustle out for our show. I would go again, but will wait a while to see if their service gets straightened out.

Yelp
Dining at Pomona was one of my best experiences I've ever had. I sat at the bar and had an absolutely amazing time with the bartenders Anya and Mario. The cocktails were phenomenal, the service was top notch, and the food was incredible. Alex and Leigh also introduced themselves, and they were absolutely lovely. If I could rate 100 stars, I would. I don't usually write yelp reviews, but i had to write one.

Yelp
I was absolutely blown away by Pomona. The service was professional, friendly and knowledgable. We were celebrating a birthday and my girlfriend was made to feel like the only girl in the world, truly spectacular. When you are lucky enough to make it here, the foie gras sliders and black truffle chicken dogs were sensational, do not leave without trying. And let me tell you about the dessert... I consider myself to be a bit of a chocolate mousse connoisseur and Pomona truly did not disappoint. I cannot say enough good things. ... That was just the beginning of the evening. Following dinner we made our way to Savage lounge, it felt like a classic New York secret with a modern twist. We danced until our feet hurt and drank just enough champagne. Thanks so much, Chef Mark and the rest of the staff! Cannot wait to return.

Yelp
I started with a drink atmosphere I have felt in an NYC restaurant in years. Really great art all around the place too. I ordered some food and everything was so good I honestly had to speak with Chef. Great time.

Yelp
I love this beautiful place. I sat at the bar and had the duck burger and a glass of wine. Both were delicious. The atmosphere was warm and the service was lovely. It is a fabulous place to go at the end of a busy week. I will definitely be back. Thanks!

Yelp
Fabulous food, service and atmosphere !! My girlfriends and I celebrated my 45th birthday here and had a blast !! Highly recommend and can't wait to go back !! Tara May

Yelp
Amazing food. Nicest staff. Happy relaxing environment. Very comfortable. Best rib eye I have ever had. The oysters with celery sorbet is absolutely amazing. Baked clams are perfect. And the slow cooked halibut was out of this world. I've eaten halibut my whole life and this chef has perfected it. And the baked Alaska was a perfect ending to a perfect meal. Best dinner I have had in Manhattan recently. I'm so happy Pomona opened.

Griff P.

Yelp
Went for dinner and drinks recently. Had an amazing time! Grabbed drinks at the bar and then had the shrimp app and a steak for dinner. My steak was cooked perfectly and the shrimp did not disappoint. Rest of the group felt the same. The atmosphere was fun and electric. We spent a few hours here and already cant wait to go back!

Eric M.

Yelp
Very good food, but insanely overpriced for such small portions. Decor was interesting... relatively casual elegant... but I could not figure out what it was trying to look like. Service was great, although our waiter could have loosened up a bit.

Alexandre H.

Yelp
Seriously some of the best cocktails i had in a long while. Their fat wash old fashion (gun slinger?) is an absolute must. The bartender sent us couple of dishes that were exceptional as well. Can't wait to come back for dinner!

Imane E.

Yelp
This amazing Restaurant offers nothing but excellence in food, hospitality and design. I used to come to this space when it was Beautique and it's a total transformation in all elements. I love the iconic location next to the Plaza hotel and Central Park.

Michael V.

Yelp
This was just amazing, from the design and lively bar. The service was top notch and the food forget about it , we had an affordable interesting flavorful meal. Pomona is the city's best kept secret... for now .

Derek T.

Yelp
Had dinner last Saturday with a friend. The place had a great vibe with lots of action at the bar and in the dining room where the music was deep house chill playlist. The food was amazing, we shared everything. Started with the whole baked clams and the mixed grens salad. The mixed greens was great..the salad was made with a mixture of raddicio and endives on top of imported ricotta cheese. I wish we took pictures it was all pink and no greens at all. We shared a ribeye for 2 people which was finished two ways. They smoked the deckle and cajun crusted eye. Steak was cooked perfectly. Sides we choose 3 lemon scented crispy brussel sprouts. Creamed escarole whixh was a refreshing change from creamed spinach and the goose fat potatoes are a must have item. There desserts were amazing i was informed all where made in house by there pastry chef. ..including the ice creams. We had the chocolate moose with espresso ice cream. And the carrot cake with pineapple icecream was to die for. I cant wait to come back
