We've heard about this place for awhile and finally decided to check it out last Saturday for lunch. What we've heard is that this is the place to go for their thin-crust bar pizza. We were ready.
It's located in a Pembroke strip mall with an inviting old-school facade. I don't know about you but I've found quite a few hidden gems in strip malls over the years. Never discount a strip mall restaurant!
Upon entering it looked like we had stepped back in time to the 1970s and I mean that in a good way. It's a large, dark paneled space, with an acoustic tile ceiling and overhead lighting that some of us remember from childhood. Despite it being a sunny day it was on the dark side indoors. Although it's November now I could see that dark cavernous space being especially appreciated on a broiling summer day when you want nothing more on a scorching day than to escape the relentless sun in a cool dark bar.
There were quite a few people when we arrived but there were still plenty of seats. You are welcome to seat yourself. To the left of the restaurant there is a bar and a few TVs with the sound on low.
We sat as far from the bar (and TVs) as possible and weren't bothered at all by any TV noise. Our wait person greeted us quickly and took our drink orders.
If you're not terribly hungry two people really could share one pizza but these are smaller bar-style pies. My husband and I each ordered one. I got mine with onions and anchovies. Yes, I am an anchovy gal! He ordered a mushroom, onion and black olive pizza.
There is a bit of a wait for the pizzas so sit back and relax with a beverage. We each ordered a beer. I went old-school and got a Miller on draft while my husband got a Stella. This is not a craft beer joint and for that we were both grateful. Sorry, hipsters but we hate craft beers.
When the pizzas arrived they were beautiful, steaming, thinly crusted pies. My heart skipped a beat and for a moment was propelled back to my childhood when my dad would take me to a local pizza restaurant in NYC very similar in look and feel to Poopsies. I had a misty moment.
I noted a bit of char on the crust which made my heart soar because to me, a bit of pizza crust char is essential. These pizzas (technically "pizze") had the right balance of sauce, cheese and a judicious application of toppings.
There was just enough onion on my pizza and the perfect number of anchovies. They weren't overwhelmed with sauce. Given how bold and salty the flavor of anchovies are you have to be careful with them. This was bar pizza deliciousness extraordinaire.
The pace here is relaxed, the atmosphere is friendly and no one is rushed. It was such a pleasant and delicious lunch where we in fact felt like lingering. We've heard that on Friday nights Poopsies is packed to the gills. I guess we won't ever go then. For sure we will be back for another weekend lunch.
If pizza is not your thing there are plenty of other menu items like hamburgers, chili, salads, and the like but what Poopsies is known for is thin-crust old-school pizzas. The prices are quite reasonable.
Please note that this is a cash only place!
It may have taken awhile for us to get ourselves here but we are really glad we did. We'll be back.
