Came here because the fish and chips were highly recommended on many blogs as the best fish and chips in London. Our friend was visiting London for the first time so we figured we'd take him to the best spot. Very cute 50's diner style restaurant. We got 2 cods and a skate with a side of mushy peas and of course a sticky toffee pudding. Everything tasted great but not sure if it was really worth the price for fish and chips. It was almost £100 for 3 people which seems like a lot for this type of meal. Still would recommend to try it out.

Last Sunday, after visiting a goldsmiths exhibition near St Paul’s, we wandered through the city and passed by Spitalfields Market, where we came across Poppies Fish & Chips. Having heard it was quite famous, we decided to give it a try. At around 3:30 in the afternoon, there was no wait, and we were seated right away. We ordered the regular cod fish and chips, along with the seafood platter to share, as ordering two portions of fish would have been too much for us. The fish was tasty but nothing particularly special, and the seafood platter didn’t leave much of an impression either. Overall, the meal felt more like fast food than a high-quality dining experience. I believe you could find tastier fish and chips in a good quality pub. However, the interior and decoration of the restaurant were quite charming and added to the experience. While Poppies might be a decent stop for tourists looking to try traditional fish and chips, locals will likely find better options elsewhere.

Nothing special! My friend has recommended me this place, as the best fish and chips in town. As per my taste it was just normal fish and chips with a really nice glass of Prosecco. And good vibes and music.

Hunted down Poppies Fish and Chips based on the online reviews, a twenty-minute walk past a few other "fish and chip establishments". The service (welcomed to the roped off area for dining in ... I was on my own, so was given the single seater "lucky no 7" table ...), was instant and friendly. Lots of waiting staff to serve you within seconds. The food was lovely, succulent and tasty. And a glass of prosecco helped it all down. Probably the beat fish and chips I've had in London. Worth a visit. It would be a little expensive for a large group ... but this is a restaurant if you eat in, not a take away fish and chip shop, and as such, well priced.

Wonderful atmosphere as if you are in the 60's or 70's. The food is delicious and the service is great too. I recommend it also for take away, it makes a great dinner at home. In the picture is Cod, mushed peas and two Camden beers.

This gave me 1950s diner vibes. The staff could not have been more courteous. I did find the fish a little bland but I did get the cod which is the healthier option compared to the haddock which is a lot fishier. I was recommended to substitute the chips with peas. I paid about 28 pounds total, for one person which was dinner and a beer. It felt like a lot of money for something that wasn't that good.

Poppies is a chain of fish and chips restaurants in London. That being said, they do a good job in selling decently solid English fair to the masses, especially to tourists. The food is tasty and fresh, and the portions are generous, though it is a bit on the pricey side in my opinion. I tried mushy peas for the first time there, and as an American, I was surprised that they reminded me so much of split pea soup. Poppies' mushy peas were delicious, though I suspect they could have been a bit thicker. The decor is overwhelmingly patriotic and British which is kind of fun if you are visiting from a different country and have kids/teens with you. The service is good and the interior bright and clean. If you don't mind paying a bit more for dining in it's a fun place to try. However I don't see it becoming a local's personal weekly chippy, for that you're better off finding a local onw that is run by surly fried fish slinger, who barely converses, and takes only cash.

First time in London and boy, did Poppies hit the spot! As a tourist trying to get my fish and chips fix, I stumbled upon this gem. The moment I walked in, I felt like I'd time-traveled back to the 50s - the vintage decor is so cool! Let's talk about the star of the show: the fish and chips. Holy moly, it was good! The fish was fresh and flaky, wrapped in this crispy batter that had me doing a happy dance. And those chips? Thick, crispy on the outside, and perfectly potato-y on the inside. Pro tip: splash some malt vinegar on top. It's a game-changer! Now, let's talk about the mushy peas. I'll be honest, I was skeptical at first (mushy what now?), but decided to go full Brit and give them a try. Surprise surprise, they were actually pretty tasty! Kind of like a warm, savory pea soup. Not sure I'm a convert, but definitely worth trying for the authentic experience. For dessert, I hit the jackpot with the Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding. Oh. My. God. This wasn't just any sticky toffee pudding - it was THE sticky toffee pudding. Rich, gooey, and smothered in toffee sauce. Seriously, if you try one thing here besides the fish and chips, make it this pudding! The staff were super friendly and helped this clueless tourist figure out the menu. Only reason it's not a full 5 stars is that it was pretty crowded and a bit noisy. But hey, that's just proof of how good it is, right? If you're a tourist like me looking for that authentic British food experience, definitely give Poppies a try. Just be prepared to waddle out - portions are generous!

Food was not great. Haddock was greasier than crunchy. Chips dry and not fresh. Mushy peas wasn't bad, just tasted like mushed peas. Lager beer was good. Tartar sauce and mayo straight from jars.

Poppies was a cool place to stop at. Food was decent here and the vibe was cool. I liked the diner aesthetic. Service was great here too - our food came out super fast. I got the fried haddock dinner and chips. It was pretty good but a bit bland. The chips were nice and thick. The mushy peas were decent too. Overall, I would come back here, the ambiance was super cool. Fun to get served such a big piece of fish too :)

Yelp! First time in London and Everybody suggest, YOU GOT TO GET THE FISH AND CHIPS. So, we see POPPIES. First off, we in Camden market and you crowded. Everybody wants this fish. It's 1:00pm and you are out of all large and fish bites. FOLKS IN LONDON BE EATING. As a party of 4, we decide on 2 fish and chips, And they out of cod, so we get the Haddock. Soooo good!! Delicious! Everybody happy, we tore it up. Your malt vinegar with this old ship to shore decor is a sure fire. Thanks for your service. By far the best fish and chips on my visit.

Bright shiny penny, lovely polite staff, clean & welcoming...but the fish & chips were average, they were out of the large order of Cod & we only could choose the Haddock (which seems to be a common theme) I was shocked actually at the prices..However, we enjoyed our time sitting & relaxing after miles of walking & appreciated that it is a touristy attraction. I think if the fish & chips were more like 18 bucks vs 28, the review would be 5 stars.

This was exactly what we were looking for! We wanted some traditional fish and chips, and so we headed to poppies. Unfortunately, they were out of cod, and so we had the haddock, but it turned out to be delicious anyway. The chips (fries) we're delicious, crispy, and the fish was crispy all around. Two of the kids had the sausages which were actually really really good. We tried the jellied eel, which I'm sure was very well done, but wasn't for us. The salad came with only olive oil so be aware of that. And the calamari came with only 4 pieces and wasn't all that good. If you're looking for traditional, delicious, fish and chips, this is the place but stick with the fish and chips.

This was just around the corner from our Air bnb so we decided to try it out. I ordered fish and chips and a sticky toffee pudding for desert. The fish wasn't the greatest but the chips were good. I enjoyed the pudding. The server we had was great she was very friendly and helpful.

You can do better than this spot, which is a tourist trap through and through. Sadly, I was deceived by the cute awning outside. Regular fish supper with cod was shareable and fine.

It's a pretty good chippie. Add salt right away if you're from US. Crispy batter. Actual fish is best if you get halibut. Overall strong fish and chip option.

Highly recommended fish and chips joint in London and it didn't disappoint. Fish was extremely crispy on the outside and extremely hot on the inside. Worth the trek across town.

I heard that this restaurant was the restaurant to find great fish and chips. I am glad that I looked at reviews because I was able to make a reservation prior to going. The reservation is highly encouraged since the place is tiny. There's a lot of takeaways, but also people waiting for a table. You can see the cooks making the fish and the display of food made from the entrance. They have fish and chips and a few other items like pies. For the fish and chips, you get to choose the fish of your liking. We were going to share it so we ordered a large fish plate. It was definitely large. I decided on the haddock for the fish. It was perfectly seasoned. My friend had the cod. I think it would get the cod instead of the haddock if I went back. The fries were delicious. They were thick. The tartar sauce was good and it comes in a cute little jar. I shares the pickled eggs and onions. They were pretty strong. It definitely opened my sinuses. The Cornish vegetable pasty was tasty and big enough to have it as a meal. They do sell beer, wine and cocktails. I had wine. Service was fast and the waitress was friendly.

Definitely a must do when you find yourself in City Center of London. Everything about the staff and the place makes it worth the trip. The fish (cod or haddock) was served quickly, hot and fresh. Great people watching too. Do yourself a favor and make the trip!

We ordered Haddock, cod, halibut, and calamari. They're all deep fried with the same batter. Nice crunch to it, it's perfectly fried, the fish is moist on the inside and crispy on the outside. It came with thick cut chips (aka French fries). There's no flavor to it until you add the house tar tar sauce, and ketchup, plus the salt and pepper. Was a bit disappointing, I was told it was great but apparently, if you like it bland, it is what you get. The anchovies are tasty but that was it. The drinks are good and with a good amount of alcohol. I got a margarita to pair with my meal. The cream soda we ordered is also very good. The service is slow and they forgot one order so my lady had to wait for her order and we didn't start eating until she got hers. The order taker also is very hard to understand, that the manager took over to correct the errors. Place is nice but a bit crowded. It's a local favorite. Good for people who wants to eat fish without the overwhelming fishy taste or smell.

What a cute diner concept! Perfectly situated in a busy part of town with some shopping and pubs close by. The service is prompt and detailed. I really like how quickly the food is delivered after ordering. The fish (cod) was fresh, light, flakey and well cooked. The skin was a pleasant surprise. The mushy peas were also very good and just the right texture. All the items arrived to the table piping hot and delicious! I appreciate the low seasoning so you can adjust it on your own. The homemade tartare sauce is perfect with the fish and the crispy chips. Fun place to try if you are visiting or a local.

5 stars for the food, 3 stars for the service. We made a stop here on our London trip to try the fish and chips. The fish and chips did not disappoint! I got the cod fish and chips with curry sauce and mushy peas on the side. The curry sauce is a MUST to go with the chips. Mushy peas I could skip as I don't enjoy peas, but my friend enjoyed them (they taste exactly like what you expect mashed peas to taste like...so you either like peas or you don't). Also, the ketchup does not taste like American ketchup just FYI...so if you are American and enjoy the taste of American ketchup, that will taste different which is neither good nor bad, just an observation (the ketchup bottles were adorable though). My cod fish was cooked perfectly, and I just love the taste and smoothness of cod in general, so that is definitely my top pick for type of fish. Additionally, I forgot to take a picture, but the sticky toffee pudding here is also delicious!! Don't skip it; it's very good!! The decor at this place was super cute and retro. I loved the experience! However, I will say that the server we had that day was quite rude and snippy with us. We had to ask several times for our check and she was not very nice while taking our order, she looked quite annoyed in general.

Came here at the recommendation of someone who lived in London for many years and dubbed Poppies "the best fish and chips ever." He certainly did not lie. I am not a white fish person, so I ordered the kid's portion in order to get a taste without having too much. The size was perfect for me. The fish was fresh and not over-breaded. My only negative was that it did not come with lemon to squeeze on top of it. The service was not the best; lots of servers were standing around in the tight space but it was difficult to get water, napkins, etc. The price was also a bit high (approx £17 for a regular size). For those reasons it gets 4 stars instead of 5.

Very touristy. That's not always a problem, judge for yourself. Service is polite and efficient. The room is decorated in British kitsch but it's not offensive. The food is meh. Haddock, chips, and mushy peas. The chips were lukewarm and limp, the fish was well cooked, and the peas were peas. They also had the most taste of anything on the table. The fish and its coating were entirely unseasoned. I watched my husband drown the fish in every condiment on the table just to get some flavor. I finally resorted to using ketchup (which I'm embarrassed to admit but I needed to use something). I've honestly had better fish and chips in American sports bars. There have to be better chippies in London. There must be.

It's hard to beat the classic fish and chips, and Poppies makes one of the best fish dinners in London. The decor is nostalgic of the 50's with a bunch of random items on the wall but the food delivers. Fish is fried to order, and the chips/fries are crispy on the outside and a creamy interior. Poppies serves traditional fish and chips in the traditional way, wrapped in newspaper, in the heart of London's Spitalfields market. Poppies has been serving fish and chips in the East End for over 50 years, during which time it has maintained the recipe for,traditional fish and chips. The themed restaurant may not be for everyone, however there is no denying that Poppies is a great place to dine. The service is quick and friendly, the hairstyles quirky and the blue and white décor retro. What's more, the fish and chips are excellent.

fish comes out super fast and hot but it was just okay compared to some of the other places i've tried. not bad but was just expecting more given the hype around this place. it's also pretty pricey for the size of fish. i feel like it's very likely there are much better and higher value places available.

LOVED THEIR FISH AND CHIPS! We made a stop during our eating our way through London tour, and it was a sensation. Yes, you can get sick of fish and chips in England. But this is one of those places that you will crave when you leave! Served in their "food grade newspaper" cone, delight yourself in an English favorite. The mushy peas were also fantastic. And get toppings til your heart is content, but please go for the vinegar. It's a classic! No frills, all things fried, its a winner!

I came here while traveling for work and ultimately had a reliable and fantastic dinner for 1. My friends and colleagues had recommended this place as a staple for Fish n chips while in the UK. I was able to arrive at dinner time and find a table without waiting. The service was quick, I had ordered the Haddock with Mushy Peas and was eating within minutes of sitting down. I have had fish n chips before, although this wasn't the best Fish n Chips I have ever had, the ambiance of the restaurant and the quick service make this a great establishment. The food was great, the fish wasn't heavily battered. The peas had fantastic seasoning as well. I would certainly go back!

It's official - the English have no concept of seasoning or flavor and don't know what makes a good fish & chips. This place came recommended by SO many vloggers and reviewers and I even saw a ton of accolades of awards and what not posted throughout the restaurant. And considering the crowds - you would expect it to be at least "good". WHY. This place sucks. I arrived Thursday night around 7 and waited roughly 20 minutes for a seat. While waiting, you get a look at the cooks frying up everything. One pair walked in and said they have reservations but couldn't get a hold of the host so they asked one of the cooks for help. The cook scoffed at them and said they have to wait, with one of the worst attitudes ever. The host finally came by and didn't even believe the pair had a reservation, even when she pulled up an email confirmation from 3 days prior. He knew he was in the wrong and rolled his eyes before taking them to a table. The only decent person I encountered was my waitress, a young girl with braces who really was the only nice person here. I asked what she recommended and I wanted to try two fish with just one "chips" so she said to get the Cod and Haddock, one side of chips, and then I ordered the sticky toffee pudding for dessert, all totaling about 55 pounds. Insanely expensive for what it is. The chips sucked. Soggy, soft, mushy, oily, greasy, no flavor whatsoever. I will say, both fish had a crispy and crunchy batter that wasn't too thick, so that was nice. But the batter had no seasoning whatsoever. Even when I doused it in malt vinegar and lemon, it just didn't help. As for the fish, I couldn't tell you which was which, but the first I ate was the longer and flatter fish. It was flakier than the other fish but dry, bland, and just meh. The second fish was thicker but tougher and again, dry, flavorless, and more of the batter hung off this fish without any fish so what looked like half the fish left on my plate was just empty batter. Surprisingly, the sticky toffee pudding was outstanding. If service wasn't as bad or the wait not as long, I would recommend anyone go here just for the pudding. Although it was amazing, it's not good enough to return.

So I've always been a fan of fish n chips. Even in the states I get it when I'm craving it. My first time in London, I had it at a pub and it was great.... but this Poppies is on another level. The cod is super moist and has a great texture to it. And compared to the states, the actual batter doesn't fall off! maybe because they don't use a beer batter? It's very very light, you let the vinegar and the tartar sauce do all of the flavoring, but the texture and consistency of the fish is perfect. What I noticed about this is that they leave the fish skin on, maybe that helps, but either way it was the best fish n chips I've ever had, for sure. The staff is super nice and helpful as well. It def has a 1950's American diner to it, which is weird because it's a London company. But that's besides the point. Oh the french fries are ok (I'm not calling them chips anymore). This place has completely ruined fish n chips in the states, if anyone knows anything that is similar, holler at me!

Read about Poppies and needed to give it a try. Hubs ordered - didn't know which fish to get so told them to surprise us. Still don't know which fish we ate, but it was hot, moist, and flavorful. Doused it with some vinegar - so good! The chips were also crispy and hot. Would've ordered more if we weren't on a mission to try out other items. Would definitely return for more.

Great fish and chips, we tried the halibut option was fantastic. Try the garden peas, as well as pickled pickle. Don't miss their cartmel sticky toffee pudding to top it off.

This has to be the best fish n chips I've ever eaten. No wonder this is a must goto place when in the UK. The batter to fish ratio is PERFECT! Mushy peas excellent! If your ever in the UK and you enjoy fish n chips check this place out you might like it!!

I was craving some fish and chips, so off to Poppies we went. It is right around the corner from where we were staying and I heard so many good things about it. I had made a reservation on Open Table, so we did not have to wait. The interior is small, but cozy. The service was quick and friendly. I had the cod and my husband had the haddock. Both came out flaky and piping hot. I wish the seasoning had been a bit stronger. Even with salt, vinegar, and tartar sauce (in the cute little jar), I was still wanting more. I'd say overall that there is nothin wrong this place. Was just hoping for a bit more.

Near a tesco and walking distance from several vintage and secondhand shops. -- seating -- quite a few tables inside, but better to keep it to a smaller party of up to 4. You can do takeaway. -- experience -- very good! Got fortunate to have been seated right away. We got there as soon as the dinner rush kicked in. So be mindful that there could be a wait. We got the cod and haddock and enjoyed both. I forget which one was the meatier one, but I'd definitely choose that of the two. Either way, still yummy. Fish is nice and crispy. Big serving of chips as well. Ketchup and vinegar are at the table. The tartar sauce comes in a petit jar. I used all of it! So good. And get that squeeze of lemon on top too. -- service -- good! Friendly and funny. They give candies with your bill.

We came to Poppies for their famous fish and chips. We were looking for traditional English fish and chips and we definitely found it! The restaurant is decorated with lots of English traditions and cultures. We were lucky that we walked in and sat down right the way. The waiter came to greet us quickly and gave us the menu. We directly ordered their large cod fish and chips. It was so delicious!! I love the flakey cod which was lightly breaded and fried to be crispy outdid but super soft inside. The chips were nicely done as well. Overall, it was great. Definitely hit the spot for me.

Absolutely delicious. No nonsense, take and eat standing up but boy was it good. Fresh fried cod with delicious, fresh chips. We also go ketchup and tartar sauce (each was .40 extra) but worth it. So delicious. Would come back. And it's near tons of great shopping and weekend markets.

Great Fish and Chips spot in London recommend by my mate. We both got the Haddock and Chips. Good sized portion, cooked crispy on the outside and fall apart tender on the inside. I'm not the biggest Fish and Chips fan but I will say this place impressed me and I can recommend it and would come back again. Wait staff was friendly and quick. Before I left London I had to try some traditional English Fish and Chips! My friend got us an online reservation ahead of time so we were able to skip the line. I'd highly recommend the hot seafood platter because it has a bit of everything and because it was bomb! I love it when seafood is cooked appropriately so it retains its juices, flavors, and moisture! The shrimp, cod bites, and calamari were fried precisely this way (super juicy, not overcooked). Loved how the batter wasn't too heavy for me and very crispy. The whitebait are little fish that were definitely more fish-flavor heavy. I personally enjoyed them but can see how others may not like the strong bitter fishy taste. I'm not a huge fan of fries/chips in general but can say that their chips were authentic fried chunks of potatoes. Salt/pepper, vinegar, ketchup, and tartar sauce were all available. We got our meals with a solid ginger beer (very strong but yummy ginger flavors) and a cream soda that really tasted like melted vanilla ice cream. Really checking off my internal list of British Things to Do during my visit here. I also loved the naval/ocean decor with lots of British culture references on the walls. Food came quick and take out options are also available.

Stopped by for fish and chips after visiting the Dennis Severs' house. It was really bright and bustling but we were seated right away. The place really reminded me of the Portillo's down the street from us! The fish and chips (we both had the cod) was delicious and of a generous portion. The tables were a little crammed together, and I definitely got the feeling that they wanted us in and out quickly, so minus a star for that. But delicious food and fast service.

Solid fish and chips. The fish was so juicy and flavorful and the tartar sauce was great. The theme in the restaurant is really fun as well. Service was just okay - maybe my waiter was just a bit sassy. Overall, definitely recommend for a quick but yum fish and chips meal

When I visited London everyone told me I had to try fish and chips. I found this place online and didn't know much about it other than the pictures looked amazing. I made a quick reservation on open table. When we arrived our table was ready and we sat and ordered. We even searched about the owner because we were interested about when he opened the place. Although the place was super busy the service was amazing and so was the food. We got the hot seafood platter which has calamari and other cooked fish on it. We got the cod platter and a chicken platter. Everything was delicious the chips were crispy and cooked to perfection. The fish was crispy on the outside soft in the inside. Also make sure to order the pickled onions if you like pickles it was great. I will for sure be returning everything was delicious.

Honestly the best fish and chips we ever had! Super fresh and crispy not oily at all.. fast service and fun restaurant to eat at! Kids meals are reasonably priced and well portioned . Service was really kind and efficient! We had calamari it was ok but the fish is definitely amazing! You can't visit London and not have fish and chips!

Their food delicious, but they forgot our order so I must remove a star. I was being very patient, but after 45 minutes of not getting food after we ordered, we had to say something and indeed our order was lost. Anyway, this is an iconic Fish & Chips joint, so get the classic meal with a beer, and have a good time! Beware the place gets full, so try to come at off-peak hours or be prepare for a wait.

This place is full of 50s inspired decor. Very cute setting and atmosphere. The service was great they're so quick with the food! Ordered the fish and chips obviously! I ordered the cod and my sister ordered the haddock. The haddock was way tastier than the cod! We visited this spot twice. Loved it the first time second time gosh wasn't as good.

The fish is so fresh and hot and flaky. Everything is original. I love it here. I just need to move to London so I can have poppies every day.

Friendly services, fresh fish and great price for the area. Huge portions and highly recommend making reservations on open table. It's a tiny place and there could be a long line. If you have reservations you get seated within 5 minutes. We have gone back twice during our stay in London.

No trip to the UK is complete without trying fish & chips, and Poppies is the perfect place to try this classic dish. The haddock was delicious, and huge - three of us split the large portion! The service was wonderful. Our only complaint was that the tiny portion of tartar sauce wasn't nearly enough.

You can't come to London and NOT have Fish & Chips!!! This place has been around since 1952. Sitting down for dinner, now this place is tight but what in Europe isn't? The fish was okay, our son rated it a 6/10. The outside was crispy and crunchy (best part in my opinion), the fish was flaky but lacking major flavor (seasoning). The tartar sauce helped lighten the blow of the none seasoning. The chips was REALLY good, rightly fried golden! The Pot of tea was amazing!!! They also gave us a cute little treat with the check. I can't remember the place went to before but I'd say, give it a try if you dare or do your research. All you can do is try!

Friendly and attentive staff. High quality ingredients with generational sourcing. Check out their website for details. I ordered the large cod with mushy peas. The mushy peas were excellent. I could eat buckets of that stuff. The cod was a thick, generous, crispy and tasty portion. It was very fresh. The chips were crispy with a pillowy interior. Just a little salt & pepper on the chips, my personal preference. I can't wait to come back again. Check them out if in the area.

Over priced for the food. Disappointed in portions and flavor. There are better options than Poppies.

Came here on a recommendation on my trip to London and was not disappointed. The fish was huge and the chips were well cooked. The batter was not overly oily at all and was crispy and not floury or mushy. Would definitely come back here for genuine fish and chips!
