All-Day Restaurant Poppy & Claro Brings Hearth-Fired Pizzas and Breakfast Burritos to Downtown San Jose | Eater SF

"On the ground floor of 50 West in San Jose, this all-day restaurant and bar is designed to be approachable for everyone—equally suited to business breakfasts and evening dates—and runs Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mornings revolve around Sightglass Coffee with drip, espresso, cortados, cappuccinos, teas, and specialty sips like espresso tonics, matcha spritzes, and the namesake Claro (espresso with milk, toasted black walnut syrup, and black walnut bitters). Manresa Bread supplies pastries and the base for an egg, mushroom, and avocado toast—described as a French soft scramble with roasted maitakes and crushed avocado—plus a breakfast sandwich, chilaquiles, a breakfast burrito, and the Claro granola parfait with toasted black walnuts; soft serve with an optional black walnut and brown sugar streusel adds a sweet note. The kitchen centers on a newly installed hearth, where chef Christopher Littman—who hails from Brooklyn and has been studying pizza since about age nine, refining his recipe via a pandemic pop-up—turns out a “California meets New York” pie program, from a seasonal rotating option to the Truffle Shuffle (maitake and crimini mushrooms with truffle-garlic crema) and the Hot Rosa, a red-sauce pie with Fra’mani salami rosa finished with burrata, pistachio, Calabrian chile, and hot honey. Beyond pizza, the hearth fires seared Dijon-dill salmon, herb and garlic chicken, chile-glazed wings with fried Thai basil, and made-to-order flatbread with hummus, garlic toum, and green goddess, and even bakes the chocolate chip cookie; a 50West smash burger with New School American cheese, a salmon club, and a caramelized onion grilled cheese round out the sandwiches. The bar highlights California wines and local beers and mixes classic-leaning cocktails such as the Welcome Trolley—a pineapple-led margarita riff with lemongrass tequila, pineapple gomme, and lime, finished with absinthe and sparkling wine—with a 4:30–7:30 p.m. social hour offering lowered drink prices." - Dianne de Guzman

Here Are the San Francisco Bay Area’s Most Anticipated Restaurant Openings of Fall 2025 | Eater SF

"An all-day restaurant and bar set to debut in downtown San Jose’s 50 West building pulls in Cass Calder Smith Architecture + Interiors for a design that nods to poppy fabrics and claro walnut tree touches. The menu spans a coffee and pastry program in the mornings, while a hearth adds a live-fire element to dishes at lunch and into the evening. Opening in October." - Dianne de Guzman

What a wonderful experience we had at Poppy & Claro. Our lunch date was on Tuesday around 230pm, they weren't too busy, we had a choice of where we could sit. We were greeted upon arrival by several employees. Our taple was a window seat where we enjoyed watching the ice skaters. They have an array of cocktails, we started with the a bourbon drink and the Trolley. Our entrees/ small plates were the battered green beans, chicken wings, soup, farro salad and mushroom pizza. The food was promptly brought to us and was hot and fresh, it did not disappoint. We thought the presentation was lovely and very tasty. The prices for the dishes was reasonable. If you want to order right away and not wait for a server they have a QR scan option to order your food. The cheesecake with huckleberries was outstanding! I can't wait to try it again. They hours open is very flexible, one of the reasons we picked it!

Awesome new spot in Downtown. It’s on my walk to work so the temptation to stop by every day is real. The signature latte is delicious (both hot and iced, but I prefer iced). Their French fries taste as if in-n-out and McDonalds fries had a baby (incredible). The breakfast smash sando was tasty and didn’t leave you feeling too greasy. The salsa on the chilaquiles is nice and tangy, good heat too! Overall atmosphere is nice: music is a good mix of indie, folk, and pop. Staff is super friendly and helpful. Comfy seating, spacious. I haven’t found the outlets yet but haven’t asked either. Free WiFi. Hope yall stick around!

Came here for a quick lunch and cafe sit down so I could do some work. I chose to get the cauli side and beet bowl for something healthy. It was one of the best vegan meals I’ve had. So much flavor. The waitress who helped me choose was so informative about the dishes and was so sweet. One of the best dining experiences I’ve had in a long time, and I’ve been traveling the US performing all year eating out…so that says a lot.

Worst customer service of all time - went in at 12:50pm on a Friday, only 3 tables had people. About 10 staff members were undecorating and the manager was a table away from us on two laptops. We ordered 2 salads, an iced tea and an appetizer. Nothing. Our waitress whispered to her co worker to refill our waters at 1:15, which we found odd as she didn’t have anything to do (she wasn’t undecorating just walking around). We got our water. 4 mins later I asked her to stop by and where our food was as it was almost 30 mins. She went to the kitchen and five mins later the chef came out and said the system had an error and they just put our ticket in. No apology or offer to comp at least our appetizer. No thanks, we just left. (Other tables got their food though so I don’t think it was a system issue- the waitress probably never put the order in. But she also never checked on us. And the manager got her food and ate it next to us the whole time lol).

Took my aunt there for a birthday celebration. They treated us well. We enjoyed both lunch entrees. Liked the decor, very welcoming, with booths, warm colors, and the fantastic California shaped table. Even the bathrooms are nice, with full height private stalls. Just remember, currently they are not open on Saturday or Sunday.

Google
First time, and I’ll be back! Great to see a new restaurant, priced between fine dining and fast casual. Meal included the Roselle Spritz (spirit free) and the chicken pita. The pita was amazing, fresh chicken, great sauce and freshly baked pita, tasted almost like naan. Drink was fresh, great to see several non alcoholic options. Restaurant is warm, welcoming, my group sat at the California table, what a nice touch.

The wings and drinks were great! Our waiter was very nice and dedicated. The dinner proportions were very, very small, especially the added salmon (literally 2 bites). Way too expensive, and No ketchup.

The restaurant is amazing! The workers were so attentive and nice. The food was delicious, and the coffee and chai were amazing!! Excited to try their cocktails in the future!

Yelp
Every thing on the menu has been incredibly tasty. I've eaten here 5 times. I've had the steak frites-it was not dry at all and had the perfect cook. I've also had the salmon, I couldn't believe it was so tender, I'm so used to it being over cooked. The chicken with toum was also cooked perfectly, not dry at all. I also tried the oat and chia pudding-the cardamom flavor was delicious! On top of that, the staff is super friendly and attentive. The interior design is next level! This place should always be packed. It so much better than the surrounding restaurants for lunch and breakfast!

Yelp
How have you not been to Poppy & Claro already? It's a coffee shop, a restaurant, and a bar. Usually when a place tries to do too many things, it doesn't get any of the right -- in this case Poppy & Clara nails all three. Get the brown butter caramel latte. It comes a little too sweet for me, so I ask for less syrup but it's unusual and really good. Time to try something other than chain store PSL. Pair the latte with a morning smash sando: eggs + cheddar on a hearty brioche. Or, if you want something lighter and sweeter, there's an assortment of Manresa pastries. For lunch, I vouch for the salmon club. Nicely seasoned and grilled salmon on levain sourdough bread. Messy (three napkins!) but delicious. You could also try the truffled grilled cheese. In my opinion, truffles make anything better and this three cheese gooeyness is awesome. Full bar, decent selection of wins, both at reasonable downtown prices. Happy hour 3-6. Everyone working here is really nice. Come on down.

Yelp
Hubs and I were looking for something new/different and we definitely found it here! Between the two of us, we split the wings, salad, and pizza and enjoyed all of it. The wings were good with the sauce (it looked so good that hubs grabbed them before I could snap a pic!). The salad was surprisingly different with the crispy seaweed - it was a nice touch that added a bit of texture and umami. The pizza was also unexpectedly tasty too; the wood fired crust was done nicely and the salami (?) was unique and tasty. While I was here for lunch, I had to try and judge their coffees. The lattes were well made and yay for serving Sightglass coffee. I wish I still worked in DTSJ as I could definitely see myself grabbing coffee and pastries here. Overall it was a nice place - albeit a little bit more like a workday lunch or happy hour spot versus a weekend hangout.

Yelp
This new restaurant did not disappoint! Staff are great and incredibly friendly. All the cocktails are amazing! Love the ambience and want to go back during the day for the coffee and breakfast. Only "complaint" is the limited hours; closed on weekends but hopefully that changes as folks discover this downtown haven.

Yelp
Poppy & Claro just opened last week in the KQED building in downtown SJ! I've stopped by for morning coffee and tea and the staff seem really nice. I ordered a chamomile tea this morning and it was soothing for a cold day. The interior is really modern and clean, and it looks like there's a separate working space as well. They serve brunch, lunch, and dinner menus, so they're open from 7am to 7pm. I work nearby so I can't wait to try more of their menu items!

Yelp
Very nice place in the old KQED Building, for those that remember it used to be Crema, but this place is much bigger. A nice spot to get some work done have a coffee or a bite to eat. Service was friendly, but slightly understaffed... only 1 person doing coffee for the morning rush. Coffee is good and reasonably priced however I ordered an Americano and wanted a large but they only have 1 size (med). I also ordered a cali burrito which was good but no avocado so not sure it can be an official cali burrito, but the fries were a nice touch, but a little soggy and the salsa was good. Nice place if you work downtown and a touch if class seeing DT SJ really has nothing anymore. If you are looking for a great place to unwind after work, Rin and EJ are amazing bartenders that will help you with every need. They are wonderful to be around and so much fun!

Yelp
I love love love Poppy & Claro!! Today was their grand opening, and they did not disappoint. Their interior was so cute, and simply aesthetically pleasing (I'm a huge advocate for cute work spaces, and this was definitely meeting my standards!) I ordered the Brown Butter Caramel Latte and the Claro Latte, and the person taking my order was so nice and explained their default milk (it's oat milk) and was patient during the entire process. Hands down the best customer service ever! Finally, the coffee was amazing! It was not too sweet, and it had a lot of depth in its flavor (especially the brown butter latte!) The prices were reasonable, I believe it was around $6 per drink. Overall, I would make another visit and would recommend this place to anyone who is on the edge about deciding to go.

Yelp
The latest addition to downtown is gorgeous Poppy & Claro! Stop by and grab a delicious latte and enjoy the stunning dining area. We enjoyed their hearty salads and yummy appetizers! After work, they have an amazing space for happy hour with some pretty classic libations! Next time I'm definitely ordering one of their wood fired pizzas! There is a parking lot across the street or if you're working downtown, stop by.

Yelp
This place opening up on the floor level of our office building is what my co workers and I have been waiting for, for months. Finally came in to have lunch and it was overall a positive experience and great addition to downtown. You can seat yourself and order off the QR code on the table. It gives you the option do either and individual order it table order and the individual option is perfect for going in groups but everyone wants to pay for their own stuff. I got the house Arnold Palmer which was really good and refreshing, the turkey club and the lemon pistachio olive oil cake. The sandwich comes with either fries or a salad, I obviously chose fries which were delicious. For the price I feel like the sandwich lacked some heft but the bread they use is delicious. The cake is where they lost me, though it was moist and delicious, it was basically a slice of lemon pound cake with some pistachios on top and for $8 I feel like it was definitely not worth it. They do have a diverse menu and also offer breakfast so I will definitely be back to try more things and even bring my laptop down and work there and they have both indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
Stopped in for coffee and a pastry one recent morning. It's a lovely spot, and the baristas are friendly and knowledgeable. I look forward to going back to try the dinner menu!

Yelp
Found Poppy and Claro while in town on business. Excellent food and relaxed atmosphere, great combination of table and self service.

Yelp
Not sure how this place isn't packed with a long waiting list?! It's SUCH a hidden gem with impeccable style (seriously the interior design is just gorgeous), great food, awesome service, and reasonable prices. We stopped by originally to just order coffee at the bar area but decided to sit down and dine in for lunch. Food was awesome and we also ended up grabbing coffee after the meal (brown butter latte was soo good). The manager and servers were all so friendly, and we were served by the chef too. Definitely recommending this place to everyone and will be back!!

Yelp
Excellent restaurant. Terrific burger for lunch. Super-friendly staff (without overdoing it). Desperately needed in downtown SJ.

Yelp
Great addition to downtown as an upscale all day restaurant. The food is creative and very tasty. They also have a full bar. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

Sherie B.

Yelp
The service was great and the food was amazing! I had the breakfast sando was so good with the runny egg in the middle. I would definitely come back.

Anita L.

Yelp
Got the steak frites and the fries were awesome, but the steak came out almost room temp and the mustard sauce was overpowering. The hot rosa was delicious. Best part of the meal. The scallop fritters were good but wish the batter was lighter, as it seemed like it was taking away from the filling, but that spicy mustard was a great touch.

Brandi L.

Yelp
Great addition to San Jose. Great atmosphere. Food was really good and original. They have a really nice patio that is pet friendly.
