"On the ground floor of 50 West in San Jose, this all-day restaurant and bar is designed to be approachable for everyone—equally suited to business breakfasts and evening dates—and runs Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mornings revolve around Sightglass Coffee with drip, espresso, cortados, cappuccinos, teas, and specialty sips like espresso tonics, matcha spritzes, and the namesake Claro (espresso with milk, toasted black walnut syrup, and black walnut bitters). Manresa Bread supplies pastries and the base for an egg, mushroom, and avocado toast—described as a French soft scramble with roasted maitakes and crushed avocado—plus a breakfast sandwich, chilaquiles, a breakfast burrito, and the Claro granola parfait with toasted black walnuts; soft serve with an optional black walnut and brown sugar streusel adds a sweet note. The kitchen centers on a newly installed hearth, where chef Christopher Littman—who hails from Brooklyn and has been studying pizza since about age nine, refining his recipe via a pandemic pop-up—turns out a “California meets New York” pie program, from a seasonal rotating option to the Truffle Shuffle (maitake and crimini mushrooms with truffle-garlic crema) and the Hot Rosa, a red-sauce pie with Fra’mani salami rosa finished with burrata, pistachio, Calabrian chile, and hot honey. Beyond pizza, the hearth fires seared Dijon-dill salmon, herb and garlic chicken, chile-glazed wings with fried Thai basil, and made-to-order flatbread with hummus, garlic toum, and green goddess, and even bakes the chocolate chip cookie; a 50West smash burger with New School American cheese, a salmon club, and a caramelized onion grilled cheese round out the sandwiches. The bar highlights California wines and local beers and mixes classic-leaning cocktails such as the Welcome Trolley—a pineapple-led margarita riff with lemongrass tequila, pineapple gomme, and lime, finished with absinthe and sparkling wine—with a 4:30–7:30 p.m. social hour offering lowered drink prices." - Dianne de Guzman
