Poppycock's - Review - Aspen - The Infatuation

"Whether you need to fuel up before a big day on the mountain or recover from the night before, pancakes at Poppycock’s are the answer. They're made with oatmeal, making the pancakes gooey, filling, and pretty much perfect, but you can also get eggs and other breakfast stuff, too. This is a diner-like place where you can definitely eat in your ski boots." - Hillary Reinsberg

Had a delicious breakfast with my family here this morning during our stay in Aspen. The oatmeal pancakes were amazing! Everything we ordered was great. The best part about our experience was the amazing staff. Friendly and welcoming from the moment you stepped in. Our server was amazing and she was on her game juggling multiple tables so efficiently and professionally. We’ll definitely eat here again when we return! Thank you Poppycock!!

Google
Nice place for a classic breakfast. They have really good options for healthy eaters. Simple and delicious. Stuff is welcoming too

Google
It was okay, not great, not bad. Expensive for what it is, but you're in Aspen. Staff was attentive, service was pretty quick. I had standard fare, eggs, bacon, toast, unsweet tea. Was prepared the way I expect. They also have the standard fru-fru stuff you'd expect in Aspen, so you're likely to find something you wanna eat if you're a local. I'd go back if I needed breakfast in the area.

Google
I’m a huge fan of corn and cornmeal pancakes, so I was so excited to see them on the menu. Unfortunately, they were inedible. I only had a few bites and stopped. Strangely, my hot latte was delivered in a glass pint glass with a handle and an iced tea spoon? So weird. This spot won’t stay on my list even with the ideal location and friendly staff.

Google
Food was good, but the price was absolutely ridiculous. For these three things, as well as a smoothie and a coffee, the total turned out to be $60, but they had automatic 18% gratuity added that, along with the other odds and ends fees, took the total up to $80. After I had paid the $80 and they gave me the card back, I saw that they were asking for ANOTHER tip. Yes, it's Aspen, but this was insane. There were only two of us, as well. I could justify the price if it were a nicer establishment, but it's just a little hole-in-the-wall type diner.

Google
Great spot to get a sir down breakfast in Aspen. The Benedict lox was a great meal to get the day started. This was my first trip to Aspen and I arrived hours before my check in at the hotel. The staff was friendly quick and attentive. Could tell thus was a spot fir locals as some people that entered were greeted by name. My opinion on finding places like this in a town makes you feel welcome and a part of the town. Had to stop by again on the second day and enjoyed the Rancheros. If in Aspen this is the place to get a great breakfast.

Google
Food was tasty, prices not too much, spent $75 with gratuity included for 2 person, 3 plates. 3 pancakes for almost $18 it’s crazy. But it’s Aspen! Overall enjoyed the food. Maybe the country potatoes should be a little more. Attention was great!

Noah Heninger

Google
Awesome classic diner vibes. The host, who seemingly was maybe the owner(?) was the friendliest and most courteous dude imaginable in a ski town! The buttermilk pancakes were fluffy and perfect pre-ski day. Only downside is no mimosas!

Yelp
This restaurant is conveniently located in downtown Aspen, where there's plenty of (paid) parking available nearby. We walked in and were seated immediately. Our server was attentive but not the best/most helpful. I ordered a coffee and she brought me tea initially, and I had to correct her order. Later, I asked if it was possible to sub out the country potatoes with my breakfast burrito order for something else and she was really confused by the question. I ended up not making any substitutions and just didn't eat the potatoes. The breakfast burrito wasn't mixed well and was just a bean paste with scrambled eggs inside. The food felt overpriced for what it was and I was pretty disappointed in the experience.

Yelp
Decent place to get breakfast in Aspen if you're not staying in a hotel and want pancakes after 10am. Everyone was nice and we were seated promptly. We were craving a classic breakfast before our flight home at 2 pm and this place and this meal was perfect. The food lacked flavor but nothing a bit of salt can't help especially when your order is simple. Don't expect too much going in and you won't be disappointed. I would visit again for sure.

Yelp
It was elite and i loved it! Amazing people and great food! I will go soon again. Great place.

Yelp
This is a local, very basic, diner essentially. The coffee wasn't great. The food was pretty neutral. The reason for 4 not 3 stars is the friendly staff, the menu variety, the portions and price, and the overall atmosphere. I really enjoyed eating here and would come back. I had the breakfast burrito, and apart from the potatoes needing some salt, it was solid home cooking.
google avatar

Jonathan R.

Yelp
Nice local spot if you are looking for a solid breakfast. Lots on the menu and the service is friendly and efficient. Prices are reasonable for Aspen. I went with the wheat blueberry pancakes. Very tasty. Enjoy!

Yelp
It was ok.... The pancakes are good, the special- a croissant Sammie, wasn't- it was very very basic. If you're willing to give up a calm and un-rushed atmosphere, then this is your place. We felt very rushed, it was very loud and not worth the hype we heard about. However, Service was good.

Yelp
Worst breakfast in Aspen. I ordered the huevos rancheros w the eggs over medium. When it came not only were the yolks fully runny - the whites weren't even all the way cooked. That is not over medium. Send them back - waitress was very nice - no prob. Owner brings out the replacement and at full volume states they have now cooked the eggs medium well? and asked me to check them on the spot. Implying that I don't know what an over medium egg is and I they had prepared the dish properly. Even cooked properly the food is bland and poorly done. Unbelievably bad - 0/10

Marina L.

Yelp
Blueberry pancakes are poor. Gritty, and the description of granola on top is inaccurate. It is mixed or maybe ground into the pancakes which are dense and heavy. Syrup on the table is pure corn syrup with a brown stain, and $4.25 for an undisclosed amount of maple syrup is just a rip off. They did take the pancakes off the table when I said I could not eat them, and I was unwilling to try anything else. Husband said the Manhattan Eggs (scrambled eggs with salmon) were acceptable, but nothing special.

Hudson E.

Yelp
It was amazing for adults and kids. for the kids I strongly recommend the Nutella banana crape. The service was excellent. Also the restaurant was very well organized and designed.
google avatar

Yelp
I really liked Poppycocks. Food and service was good. Can't complain about the prices based on where you are. The oatmeal pancakes were excellent.
google avatar

Rob K.

Yelp
Really good breakfast spot. Friendly service. Had the lox and the bagel was quite soft. My wife had an egg scramble with smoked salmon, it was great! All other traditional breakfast items good too.

Margaret F.

Yelp
Very busy place, breakfast and service were really good. They turn their tables over very quickly. It's a family business with a good reputation. Crowded and noisy at peek hours.

Karen R.

Yelp
It's a busy place in a great location. The scrambled eggs were fine, but not much to get excited about. The potatoes had no seasoning and weren't cooked all that well. My kids ordered the French toast and said it was good, but it looked pretty soggy.

Yelp
THIS IS THE WORSE PLACE EVER. We got here and our food got very cold!! My pancakes and my husband eggs as well I told the Asian manager we didn't like our food and it was gross as well and he said "you can leave". He didn't try to find any solution! Please don't here Better option 100% it is PARADISE BAKERY

Yelp
Poppycock's looks like your average cafe, but this simple mom-and-pop place is where you will find the best pancakes in Aspen. Their specialties are the oatmeal pancakes and the corn griddle cakes. The oatmeal pancakes are pretty much a bowl of oatmeal turned into pancake form. That might not sound appetizing, but it is actually super delicious. The corn griddle cakes are served with pistachio sausages. Pistachio sausages might sound questionable, but they do not taste nutty at all and are also super delicious. The food portions are quite hearty, and the prices are pretty reasonable. Also, the staff, especially the owners, are super friendly and will let you in earlier than their opening time if they are ready to go. Poppycock's has a lot of stuff on their menu, but the pancakes are the must-try. The pancakes are super huge so plan on either sharing or having leftovers. If you want to bring the pancakes home with you, get a bag of pancake mix for $10 each. There are plenty of breakfast spots in Aspen, but Poppycock's is the most unique and also the friendliest.
google avatar

Nick N.

Yelp
Prices are 50% more than they should be for the quality of food and service. Basic American cafe food. Every item on the menu is $5-10 more than it should be. You're better off going somewhere else, paying the Aspen prices and getting your money's worth.
google avatar

Jennifer Y.

Yelp
Poppycock's Oh Poppycock's, how I love your "Old Fashion Oatmeal Pancakes"; in fact, your pancake mix is what I brought home as souvenir gifts! Nothing fancy, a solid diner this is. Piping hot and always full was my coffee cup. Enjoyed delightful bites of crispy bacon & their signature pancakes! Arrive early for it gets crowded. Welcoming and friendly they are to dogs and young children. Eating out on their patio was the right choice! CHEERS!
google avatar

Lily M.

Yelp
Terrible food, atrocious service. Do not go even if it's the last place open on earth!
google avatar

Amber S.

Yelp
Stopped here for brunch, we liked that it was a humble little cafe here in Aspen. As you know a lot are high class. The owner (I believe) was standing outside greeting people, very friendly gentleman. He was happy to help serve us alongside our server. I also noticed his wife talking to some older people. They may have been locals but the whole vibe was just humble and sweet. Love seeing that! Give this place a try!
google avatar

ANTONIO H.

Yelp
Food needs more seasoning potatoes had no flavor had to dump half the chalula sauce just to get some flavor . Would not recommend it.
google avatar

Alyssa R.

Yelp
Just OK. Tried the macadamia nut oatmeal pancakes that I would not recommend if you like fluffy pancakes. Mocha latte was just okay as well.
google avatar

Jim R.

Yelp
Typical breakfast diner. Wasn't horrible but we wish Aspen had more breakfast options.
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
A combination of disappointed and offended. $32 for pancakes and a can of Diet Coke, even by Aspen standards, is a bit much. Honestly, if the food was awesome, I would not care. But...it was below average (and we're just talking pancakes here). Very nice people working here. But, no wonder no one is ever inside this place.
google avatar

Spencer S.

Yelp
This place is one of the most reviewed breakfast spots in downtown Aspen, so of course I checked it out when I visited. It was poppin on a Sunday morning (pun kinda intended). We had to wait 15+ minutes for the first available table, which was in the front patio. Unfortunately, the food was mediocre at best. I got the hash with eggs and toast. I could've made it at home with canned hash and it would've tasted the same. Nothing special and pretty bland. Small portion as well. It was a uniform review across the board for my entire party - small portions and "meh" food. This is double bad since I feel their menu is pricey! I'd try somewhere else if I were to come back to town.
google avatar

Debi H.

Yelp
Real butter. Half-n-half. Tall mug of hot chocolate with whipped cream. Tea setup with honey. Parisian cafe style seating (on the sidewalk, marble top tables set close together) Relatively low prices. A sunny Sunday morning. What's not to love? All that BEFORE our food even arrived. Poppycock's appears to be family-owned-and-operated breakfast/brunch cafe that serves diner type dishes. Dad is the host. Various sons, daughters and cousins run the yummy food in and out -- staples like crepes, omelets, pancakes, waffles, French toasts, eggs Benedict, fortified smoothies, bagels and lox. Indoor and outdoor seating accommodate families with dogs. They also have soups, sandwiches and salads on their menu for the lunch crowd. In a town where high prices are the rule it's nice to find a breakfast/lunch spot with more normal price points. Our Belgian waffle topped with fresh fruit and the Avocado Eggs were delicious. No complaints. Two lovely poached eggs sat on English muffin covered in house salsa and surrounded by avocado slices next to potato chunks. Waffle had crispy exterior and paired nicely with the banana, strawberries and blue berries. Real maple syrup would've been nice, but the pancake syrup was fine.

Yelp
Amazing waitresses that are very nice but they could do much better on the food. I ordered a strawberry crepe expecting cream and filling. What I got was cold sliced strawberry's on regular wrap with powdered sugar galore. This made my stomach hurt and all I even ate was the strawberry's. Go spend you money somewhere else.

Yelp
Great! So cute and great service! I loved the pancakes and coffee. Great location and is very hidden which allows it to not be too crowded. Highly recommend.

Dennis C.

Yelp
I understand the restaurants are a for profit business however, when you order a latte and the charge is $6.50, plus an additional $1.00 for Oat Milk, but, an additional $1.00 for ICE ??? This is what I call GREED and GOUGING! Then an additional 5% if you use a credit card ??!!
google avatar

Lindsay M.

Yelp
YUM! What a delicious breakfast joint! They were definitely busy the Sunday morning we popped in, but the nice outdoor area, people watching and delicious food made it worth the wait. The service was great from the extremely friendly man seating everyone to the server at our table. Breakfast Burrito: As you'd expect it. Full of flavor and plenty to keep you full for most of the day. Eggs Benedict: My go-to and a classic. The hollandaise sauce was a perfect consistency and the eggs were poached just right. Macadamia Nut Pancake: We got this to share because where else will you find one?? LOADED with Macadamia nuts, this yummy flapjack will make you wonder why you haven't thought of it yet.
google avatar

Caporin R.

Yelp
Very nice service, they had a wide variety of food and dinner delicious drinks. The outside dining experience was practically perfect, and the inside looked very cozy. I got the breakfast burrito with egg whites, and for a guy who doesn't like eggs a lot, I thought it was delicious. The owner was very kind too, about two days later I needed change for parking, and while the other stores refused, he happily obliged. All in all, I would go here if you had kids, family, friends, or really anyone coming by.

Yelp
What a delightful morning we had on the front patio of Poppycock's in Aspen! It was 70 and perfect, surrounded by lovely potted flowers and trees. I enjoyed a great cup of coffee. Then I ordered an Egg Sandwich, made with an ample serving of scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, and crisp bacon on wheat toast. It was accompanied by a generous serving of fresh fruit...blueberries, strawberries and bananas. Leisurely, casual, and lovely, on the sidewalk in the middle of beautiful downtown Aspen...so nice! I shall return!
google avatar

Jassail G.

Yelp
It's ok, for the price, you can make this at home cheaper lol it's just American breakfast style foods.
google avatar

Shey S.

Yelp
Service was good food was so so. I got the huevos rancheros and they weren't that amazing
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
We were sad. Last day in Aspen and meal was overpriced and came out cold. Bacon was undercooked and more fat than bacon and ham slice had a funny taste.
google avatar

Tim O.

Yelp
Basic food at Aspen prices. Nothing to write home about but at least it exists. Found it odd that the breakfast sandwich was served on toast.
google avatar

James B.

Yelp
These folks are really not into customer care or providing a nice experience. Food is mediocre at best. You can tell by the quality and amount served that this place is all about food cost and not about making customers happy. Service is more about the technical aspects of the job than hospitality. I felt like I was asking my server to give me her first born when asking for a refill of coffee. This server reminded me of a car stuck in the mud. The wheels are spinning fast but going nowhere. I find it interesting how places like Aspen can be so mediocre. Give me a home town diner any day over this place. Meaning...this place a a lot of room to improve. Yikes!
google avatar

Joey X.

Yelp
Two friends and I came to Poppycock for breakfast before skiing and when I walked in, I realized I'd been here before! It was even better than last time. The interior of Poppycock is not fancy, but the food and service are both great and efficient. My group ordered the oatmeal pancakes to share, and they were delectable. We also separately ordered the corned beef hash, which was VERY heavy: there's no shortage of food and be ready to feel this on the slopes if you go skiing right after eating. There are no bells and whistles at poppycock, but it's a comfortable breakfast with a diner-feel, and the food is reliably delicious. Will come back again next time I'm in Aspen!

Donna W.

Yelp
Despite the fact that our oatmeal pancakes were light and flavorful once we put pure maple syrup on them, we were surprised and disappointed to find out that the ounce of maple syrup cost an extra$4.00 and because my friend and I shared the 3 large pancakes we were charged an extra $2.00 for the use of an extra plate. The manager and the owner were both rude throughout the discussion of these fees and so I recommend that everyone find a nicer, more reasonable place for a meal. The rudeness of the staff was disgraceful.
google avatar

Pierce R.

Yelp
Great breakfast and staff was very nice; My only drawback would be the decor could use a bit of sprucing up. Other than perfect quick breakfast diner
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
Honestly pretty mediocre. I tried the breakfast burrito and its nothing special. It basically fulfills the basic requirements for being a breakfast burrito and goes no further. Maybe their pancakes and crepes are better but i don't see myself rushing back here
google avatar

Kelly G.

Yelp
Such a friendly and welcoming place to walk to breakfast in Aspen. Prices are reasonable considering the location and food is classic diner breakfast ready quickly with attentive service.

Camila D.

Yelp
Completely highway robbery. Prices were so expensive. Service was horrible. Would not recommend.

Meghan K.

Yelp
I made a Yelp account to review this place. My friends and I went for breakfast to this restaurant. The food quality was subpar- potatoes tasted unseasoned and raw, pancakes were bland and the avacodo was not ripe. Not worth the price charged. The major issue was with an order of pancakes- we ordered the oatmeal pancakes and the server brought the buttermilk pancakes. We corrected the issue and the server eventually got us the correct pancakes. When the bill came, both pancakes were on the bill. Instead of just correcting this issue, the owner was notified and he came over. He then argued with both us and the server about the mixup. Then very loudly kept telling the server she was going to have to pay for the mistake- in front of us! We couldn't believe how unprofessional this was. Regardless of who mixed up, the poor server was very upset and then angry at us for her boss being an absolute jerk. 0/10 do not even try. The service along with the food isn't worth the very expensive overpriced food. If you are a server looking for work... DONT WORK FOR THIS GUY. There are several reviews that are similar to this because of this guy.
google avatar

Bradley A.

Yelp
Oatmeal pancakes were as yummy as advertised. The avocado eggs were ok but I wouldn't get them again. The pistachio sausage was a good side. Other than the pancakes (for $13), this is just a breakfast spot. Not sure the fuss.
google avatar

Allen C.

Yelp
The good. Service is really good. Staff was delightful when picking up the food. Our kiddo loved the pancake. Avocado eggs were good. The bad. The breakfast potatoes were really bad. No flavor, no seasoning. Breakfast sandwich was also little flavor and not great tasting.
google avatar

Bonita R.

Yelp
Service was pretty slow no one really wanted to seat me and the potatoes tasted old and spoiled. And what the hell is a kitchen fee?
google avatar

Jerod C.

Yelp
Went there for breakfast on a Saturday, def not impressed. The huevos ranchero was pretty bland.... If you're feeding a family of six on a budget this might be a good choice, otherwise there are better choices.
google avatar

Khaled A.

Yelp
I would have rated this place a 4 stars if it wasn't for two factors. The first was the service! It was terrible, our waitress took our orders and never came to check on us until finally she came with a check that we didn't ask for given we wanted to order another dish. This means we never got our coffee refilled. Also my glass of water had lipstick on it. I asked her (when she brought the check) if she wouldn't mind getting me a new glass with water and no ice. She disappeared again and never showed up with the glass until I embarrassed her in front of her co worker by asking if she can help us out. I was a bit calm given that I knew if I got a bad service I would provide a bad tip. This is where the story make sense, they actually add an 18% tip for any group! (We were group of two) This explains why she didn't care about providing a good service. The second reason is for being shady. They add the 18% "service charge" and then ask you for a tip when you want to sign the bill! I guarantee you that many tourist won't realize that there was a service charge and would tip (a second tip) because this place is shady. We ordered the eggs spinach and the avocado eggs. Both were good but nothing special. The oats pancakes went really well with the syrup and we really liked that. Overall I would avoid this place because of lack of service and and lack of work ethics.

Yelp
Comfortable dining area, large menu to choose from and very good customer service. A gentleman who I assume to be either the owner or a general manager was extremely welcoming, offering to take photos of me and my husband unprompted as well as the staff checking on us. Didn't have to wait long for our food either. My crepe was awesome, I'm used to most restaurants skimping on fruit whether they are high or low end, but they put so many fresh strawberries in it that I had enough for every bite. Affordably priced as well!
