"Ronnie Rippner opened the original Poppy’s in 2010 to honor the bagels of his New York roots with the kettle boiled and baked method. The new location is expected to have a bit more seating and an outdoor terrace, with a menu similar to the first location, plus varying specials." - Katie Toussaint

Poppy's Bagels is a great stop for breakfast and lunch! The staff is friendly and the food is good. The omelets are extraordinary!

We have been coming to Poppys for about 9 years and lately we have only come like 1 time every 3 months because they have gone down hill so much. You would think coming first thing when they open you would get the freshest bagels but this was like biting in to a rock. So horrible and they just don’t care anymore so disappointing!

Traveling Mwah

Google
A little slice of heaven particularly for anyone who is from up North. This is one of the only places that offers Salt bagels and they’re delicious! The price is comparable to any breakfast but it’s the service that won me over. Emilio is a fantastic asset to the store here! The environment is comfortable and welcoming similar to any bodega or deli. The bagel selection is fantastic and again the service is incredible. Treat yourself to a toasted slice of heaven.

Google
Easy menu, great specials, awesome food! Great music and overall cozy vibe inside. Very clean too! Big thanks to the sweet cashier, she informed me of their sandwich combo which is a meat, egg and cheese bagel with a drink for $8! I was greeted immediately and was not disappointed with my visit. Also parking is super easy, it’s right behind the building. I’ll definitely be visiting again.

Google
Ordered delivery recently after a number of friends recommended this place… have to admit I was skeptical, because I have been told about several other places that had “great bagels” since I moved to NC about a year ago…. lol. Anyhow, this was the first decent bagel I’ve had in the area. Thankful to not have to stuff as many in my suitcase when I go home next time!

Google
I used to come here a lot but recently the quality has gone downhill. They never remember to toast the bagels for pick up orders anymore. And when I ordered a knish yesterday it was served to me ice cold. I asked the girl at the counter to hear it up and she popped it in the microwave and forgot about it. By the time I got it it was grainy and inedible. Currently looking for a new bagel spot where the workers care about quality.

Google
These are the closest thing I’ve found to northeastern bagels in the south. These are definitely better than the chain bagel stores or grocery store bagels. One complaint I have is that we asked for the bagels toasted and they didn’t seem even a little bit toasted at all. Maybe we need to ask for “dark toasted”? That was disappointing because it could have added a good texture. They give you LOTS of cream cheese and the lox works had a good amount of lox on it. The hungryman’s wrap looked better in photos than it tasted in reality. The whole thing was one soft texture and just tasted mostly of the peppers. The wrap looked grilled but it wasn’t crispy at all it was just soft. Inside the wrap was potatos that also added to the super soft homogenous texture. Would not recommend, stick to bagels when you go here. Other reviews about bad service seem misguided to me. The place was very busy, clearly had a lot of online orders, and the shop was pretty small for the amount of people. We ordered hot food and they seem to make it fresh so you have to wait a while for things to cook. They were clearly working hard to get everything out quickly and correctly. Pro tip: there is a little parking deck behind the shop so you don’t have to struggle to find street parking.

Google
So as a New Yorker bagels are important from start to finish. Since moving to NC I've stopped at just about every bagel shop that ppl claim have NY style bagels. All New Yorkers know saying that doesn't mean anything lol. Well I'm here 9 years now and I have only found 2 bagel spots that are about as close as a New Yorker will get to home. This place is one of them. I love nothing more than the fact they sell Onion and Garlic bagels since this is not a common thing here. This is definitely the spot for great bagels and breakfast sandwiches.

Eric L.

Yelp
Absolutely hands down the best bagels in the STATE!!! It's a perfectly structured bagel, cooked to perfection outside and a pillowy soft inside, you can hear that perfect sounding crunch of a New York bagel when you cut into it. If you told me this was a New York bagel I would believe you every time. It's a 10 out of 10!!!!!

Carol R.

Yelp
Poppy's has pizza! We tried a few slices - cheese, Hawaiian, pepperoni, and meat lovers. The good: buttery, crisp crust and fair amount of toppings Could be better: cheese was congealed and sauce was one dimensional (would like more herbs or spices) Currently, they have a deal for two slices and a drink for $8.99 which is way better value than paying by the slice.

Calvin Y.

Yelp
I've been coming here for months and love it so much. The staff are very kind and considerate! They made me feel like a regular on Cheers. I'm moving out of the neighborhood, so I won't be around as much. I'll miss them!

Alisha L.

Yelp
Decent bagels but they were kinda hard. I really liked the strawberry cream cheese, it was light and not too sweet. Long wait

Carrie J.

Yelp
Stopped in here to pick up my first Goodie Bag and the staff was very friendly! There is mainly street parking so be prepared for that but I found a spot easily. The bagels were so soft and dense but also a little crispy on the edges which was just perfect!

Han ..

Yelp
So friend picked me up the bagel sandwich after I scanned the menu. It looks amazing!! But all the ingredients are good except the actual bagel I wouldn't be this critical if the restaurants name didn't have the word bagel. The bagel is hard and dry and made the entire sandwich fall apart because of it's consistency

Patrick B.

Yelp
Go to bagel shop, consistent and straight forward. Thanks for the solid sandwiches. PS, tbh place is usually packed so I would recommend order ahead.

Iman D.

Yelp
I have lived across this place for almost a year and I am so disappointed that I didn't try it sooner! If you are looking for good food and amazing bagels look no further ! They have a so many items outside of just breakfast and your food will be ready super fast and it will taste delicious!

Kate T.

Yelp
Unlike so many places that have comeback since Covid, Poppy's isn't one of them. Note: This is specific to this location. The Providence Road location is above and beyond a better location My most recent visit was yet again disappointing. I arrived at 1:30 and no bagels. One basket with about 12 bagels, poppyseed, garlic and whole wheat. When you close at 3:00 why are there still not bagels being made? Being the only customer it took over 20 minutes for my sandwich to be made. And, finally, customer service is disappointing. Going forward I will be sure to go to the Providence location when I need my Poppy's fix.

Addie W.

Yelp
I love Poppy's! Great affordable, local breakfast spot. Food is always fresh. Even if there's a long line, the staff is super friendly and food is served quickly. It's a pretty small place with limited seating on busy weekend mornings, but there's a great space to sit outdoors if you can snag a spot.

Alyssa S.

Yelp
We've been here several times and had a fine experience but today we got STALE bagels. Not sure how they can charge over $10 for 2 stale bagels. 2 bagels don't even cost that in NY!! The onion bagel had BURNT onion pieces and the Everything bagel had the least amount of seasoning I've ever seen. Poppy's doesn't have competition in Charlotte but they really should!!! This would not be hard to beat. If you think you want a bagel, no you don't.

Hannah B.

Yelp
The search is over. I finally found something that compares to a New York style slice of pizza. As a former New Yorker I can confidently say Poppy's officially makes my favorite slice of Pizza in NC. Everything about this feels like HOME. I could cry- thank you Poppy's.

Christopher K.

Yelp
Going waaayyy downhill from what I remember. My Fiance and I went in yesterday and stood there waiting to order our food for about 5 mins while the Haitian migrants working the counter leaned against the glass with their backs to us. Apparently they have pizza now and the dudes shoulder was literally touching the pizza in his old navy fleece. Lol we ended up turning around and walking out with two other couples because nobody even acknowledged us. The salmon was pale and gross looking too. I really used to like Poppys, it's a shame. Terrible service and the quality has gone super far down. Not returning ever again. Bye poppys, it was nice while it lasted, good luck holding it together. Plenty of other great bagel places. Don't go here. This place only survives off of the drunk Frat bros and sorority ho3s, the kids who grew up with Nannies cooking their meals, who now reside in South End and have no pallets to distinguish poop from food.

Sabryna J.

Yelp
If you want a thick bagel with a lot of cream cheese, this place is perfect. They don't skimp out. They also have other food like pizza and salads. Lots of types of bagels and cream cheese.

Kristen M.

Yelp
Bagel was good until I found a latex glove in my cream cheese. Will not be going back, thanks for the stomachache!

Sedana N.

Yelp
I highly recommend! If you love bagels this is the perfect place for you! Number of options of bagels and cream cheese, as well as bagel sandwiches! This location is very intimate but great for a small group. I enjoyed the everything bagel with plain cream cheese and a cinnamon sugar bagel with egg and cheese yum!! I can't wait to return!

Trey B.

Yelp
Not blown away, but pretty solid! The bagels were good, albeit a little tough for our taste. Looking forward to trying more of the options and cream cheese flavors. The house fries were also very good. I enjoyed the deli vibe. The menu could use some work - there's way too much going on on the screens and it's hard to read. The manager/lead was also yelling at her employees in front of the customers which was a little uncomfortable.

Andi M.

Yelp
We've been missing Owen's Bagels since it closed several years ago, and finally had a chance to try Poppy's in Southend. Since I try to eat lower carb, I tried the huevos rancheros wrap, and my husband got an everything bagel with bacon, egg, and cheese. The bagel was the standout here. We loved that they fry the egg on a griddle. The bagel was nice and chewy, and we'd only add extra cheese the next time. The huevos wrap was a bit of a disappointment. I asked for no onions or peppers, and I should have said no salsa as well, as theirs was a generic bottled salsa that was very wet. The other ingredients in the wrap were great, and I liked how they cooked the wrap (in a panini press, perhaps?). I'll probably get an omelet the next time, as I saw one on someone else's table, and that would be an even better low-carb dish. The interior is a bit utilitarian in design. It's not as comfortable (or eccentric!) as Owen's was, but fine for a quick bite to eat. Service was quick, although we did seem to arrive just before the Saturday morning rush. We'll likely return if we are in the area, and in the mood for a bagel.

Wilson B.

Yelp
Just moved here from New York! And OMG the bagel is just perfect and the vibe of the place it just great! I've been going weekly since I moved and the food was perfect but the whole staff knows me and greets me! Love this place highly recommend great BEC with hash brown sandwich. It reminds me of a lil corner bagel place from back home!

Jacqueline T.

Yelp
I've been to the original Poppy's, but this was my first time at the South End location. We got a Hungryman on an Asiago Bagel and a Poppy's Southern Special on an Everything Bagel. I wasn't super impressed by the sandwiches. The bagels are solid and I enjoyed them. The fillings were ok, but they were kind of dry and lacking flavor. I'd probably just stick with a bagel and cream cheese next time.

Christian K.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite bagel places in Charlotte! Service is great and food is amazing. Management will take care of their regulars. 5/5

Abigail C.

Yelp
Just not nice!! The guy taking the order was kind but the two women were mean... yelling at us to hurry up in line and the other running food messed up the name and I brought it up to her calmly and she called me a bitch when she went behind the counter!!!

Diana S.

Yelp
Cannot exaggerate how bad this place is. I've waited years to write this review, as I used to depend on this place due to proximity and was worried about repercussions. I went here almost everyday because the food was decent and super convenient. Coworkers did for awhile and quit due to the following issues: They have the WORST service ever, except for Stephanie who is their saving grace. I've had them screw up my order three times in a row on multiple occasions. Every time I went, I got the same thing and was always charged a different amount. The manager parks on the sidewalk blocking the handicap spaces. Nice guy. My boss ordered a grilled chicken salad and the server didn't understand it was different than chicken salad. Kept asking if he wanted plain or Waldorf. Even asked him to point it out on the menu board and didn't believe him. We had to get another server to place the order. Then it took 15 minutes for them to hand out a prepackaged plastic container with no dressing. Picture is of a buttered multigrain bagel. First time they gave me a plain bagel, not toasted or sliced. Second time they apologized because they were out of multigrain and I changed to cinnamon. They gave me a breakfast bagel with bacon egg and cheese. I gave it back and then they finally gave me a buttered multigrain bagel, even though they were out 10 minutes ago. No clue how this place is still in business. Bagels must taste great though because Chef Tim from kiss cafe drives up from Charleston to get these to serve in his restaurant. I just don't get it.

Edie R.

Yelp
The only consistent thing about Poppy's South Blvd is they consistently get my order wrong or do not have it ready when I get there to pick it up. And to add insult to injury, they don't pick up the phone when I call to tell them about it. So, I can't even get them to correct it without driving back to the store and waiting in line again. What a waste of time. I do NOT recommend Poppy's South Blvd.

Cameron K.

Yelp
I was in Southend and looking for a bagel. Yelp led me to Poppy's Bagels. They weren't busy at 11 am but it took a while to get my food. I ordered an asiago cheese bagel with veggie cream cheese and a soda. The bagel was great and I loved that you could taste the cucumbers in the veggie cream cheese. They had a large variety of bagels and cream cheese to choose from. It was hard to pick just one! I will say that I thought $6 for a bagel and a drink was a little expensive but the food was good so I would definitely come back. The restaurant was messy for it only being 11am. Several used and unclean booths with napkins on the floor. I've heard great things about Poppy's so I wanted to give it a shot and I'll be coming back to try a different type of bagel and cream cheese. They had sandwiches you could order at lunch.

Parker K.

Yelp
It looks very promising when you walk in, boarshead deli meat, casual atmosphere, and dr browns soda in the fridge. So we ordered, and that's kinda where the problems started. The guy who was manning the cash register doubled our order without telling us, so we ended up getting 4 bagels instead of the two we asked for, and he wasn't really listening to the rest (ordered a COLD blueberry blintz, I received a warm strawberry one). I grabbed a to-go drink from the fridges, and it was room temp like the fridges had been turned off. The bagels we received are definitely not the right consistency and are incredibly sparse on toppings. I will also say that there was SO much cream cheese on my bagel, I had to wipe about half off while my bf got almost none. Definitely won't be going back.

Alena K.

Yelp
Great customer service and the food is the same each time. The one time we ordered food for pick up and weren't given the right order, we called and they immediately refunded. I get the poppy's platter each time and it's always very good; my fiancé gets the Asiago bagel with jalapeño cream cheese and loves it!

liv s.

Yelp
might be one of my new favorite spots to pop in for a quick breakfast! got a bacon egg and cheese on a plain bagel and really enjoyed it, filling and pretty inexpensive ($7)! The menu was also much larger then I expected, like French toast and lunch subs. The inside was a little dingy, kind of hole in the wall vibes but have comfortable seating. The staff was efficient in getting our food out, not dazzling service but also not bad service. *note- can park at atherton and walk across the street or fend for street parking. I will definitely be back!

J C.

Yelp
Just ate at this place for the first time. I have an experienced taste for Bagels and I have to say this place is the best overall in Charlotte. I got the Bacon Egg & Cheese bagel and it was delicious. I also got a slice of the cheese pizza, 10/10. With a nice buttery crust and thin slice, it almost melts in your mouth while still having that true pizza texture. Great people, great hospitality, great environment. Definitely worth stopping by.

Valerie C.

Yelp
Waited almost an hour for our order as they had forgotten it. Then, we received the bag and the order was incorrect so waited extra time while they corrected it. Overall the staff is nice and worked with us and apologized for the delay. However, they need a better system to ensure all orders are done accurately and in a timely manner. We were 1 of 4 people who had their orders forgotten in the span of an hour. Once we received our correct order, the bagel wasn't toasted nor was the sandwich as a whole warm. Everything was cold and very messy as they were rushing. Food wasn't amazing and I understand things happen and orders get forgotten but they didn't even try to take the extra effort to make sure it was warm and a good bagel. Won't be coming back.

Nicholas B.

Yelp
Imagine trying to order a bagel sandwich and a donut from this place on a Monday morning on your way to work. The sandwich will obviously take a longer amount of time to make, so you'd assume you'd either receive the donut before the sandwich or with the sandwich. When they call out your name and give you the sandwich, you still don't get the donut. I don't get why they can't hand out all parts of the order at the same time. Regardless, the donuts are way too dense at this place and I won't be going back.

Craig P.

Yelp
Best bagels in all of Charlotte in my opinion. The lox cream cheese is amazing, the staff is awesome, and the ambiance is what you would expect at a deli.

AJ G.

Yelp
Just picked up 2 bagles. Poorly made, not toasted, wrong flavor cream cheese, eggs not cooked through. The whole thing fell apart when I tried to eat it. Currently on my way to a different place!

Claire B.

Yelp
I know that the bagels will never be like upstate but i do love that they have a variety of flavors, especially asiago which is my all time fav. I think the flavor of the meat, eggs and cheese are soo perfect but what is with not toasting the bagels?? Im not sure if someone complained and made you not fully toast them but i expect a golden bagel with a slight crisp. Bagels are way too doughy to just eat them not toasted. If you fixed that it would dramatically increase your ratings. The last thing I would suggest for a true northern bacon egg and cheese is being able to add on a hashbrown or at least having them for a side but like i said, just a suggestion.

Tiarra T.

Yelp
Good place to drop in and get a bagel. Three and 1/2 stars for the temperature and sandwich. I had the bacon egg and cheese sandwich. I waited about 15-20 minutes for it. It was very back at around 9:30 am. When I got the bagel it was not warm/hot when I got it. Most of the bacon was only on one side of the bagel, and the honey wheat bagel really was bland. It didn't taste like it had any honey and the bread was so thick. I also ordered a coffee. It was 9:30 am and the coffee was not hot just warm. Maybe I will try a different bagel next time.

Dontae G.

Yelp
I do not have much to say. I did wait outside while until the opened but the food had a strange taste. So two star is me being a great person. I ordered a California sandwich which is on a bagel and I love bagel sandwiches. But I was disappointed by this place as a whole. I would not spend my last $5 if I was hungry for a week at this place. Not a good place to eat.

Erin S.

Yelp
We went at 1:30 on a Saturday. There was no line, plenty of seating. We ordered at the counter, then filled our drinks, and they delivered our food to our table. We got 2 small coffees ($1.89 each), which we filled ourselves. If you're dining in, I don't know why anyone would pay for a medium or large when you can refill it yourself. We got the Egg Bagel ($3.29 + $.75 for cheese), Egg, Meat and Cheese Bagel ($4.99), Lox Works (minus the works) ($8.99), and Poppy's Challah French Toast ($8.99). The bagels were really good, but the egg was cold by the time we got it. There also wasn't enough egg to take up the whole bagel. I wish there was more egg without having to pay for it. The french toast was delicious. The caramel sauce was amaaaazing, and we didn't even need the syrup. I would give the bagel sandwiches 3 stars, but the french toast 5 stars--so Poppy's Bagels gets 4 stars. It's convenient and decently priced, so I would go back.

Derek J.

Yelp
advertise many bagel flavors but only have a few in stock, bagel hard and stale. Bacon, egg, and cheese was pretty good

Raquel P.

Yelp
Had to come back to the restaurant because they forgot the bacon on my BEC bagel. When I told the lady behind the counter, Eva, she snatched the bag from my hand and told me "You don't have to be rude". Excuse me EVA I'm sorry if I seemed a little perturbed that I had to come all the way back to the restaurant bc the employees there can't competently make a sandwich with only 3 ingredients. I can't believe how rude someone would be to a customer for their screw up. Poppy's bagels in southend is the freakin worst. Never had issues like this with the Providence location. BRING BACK OWENS BAGELS!!!

Steve M.

Yelp
Recent stop at South Blvd. Poppy's Bagels for 2 sandwiches. Chicken Salad and Ham and Swiss. Chicken salad had two scoops of meat; ham and Swiss not so good. One slice of ham and one slice of cheese. Boo Poppy's.

Raquel S.

Yelp
This place has a great reputation as being better than Owen's Bagels so I wanted to give it a try. I ordered a bacon egg and cheese on a toasted sesame bagel and a small coffee ($7.45)--the same thing I ordered at Owen's except Owen's was on a steamed bagel. This bagel sandwich looked amazing and it was pretty big. The bacon was crispy looking and the bagel was nicely toasted. I was excited to have a bite. That's where my excitement ended. There was no flavor. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing. Maybe other things have flavor? Other notable things: There's a small dining section up front, some more tables down a side hallway that leads to the bathroom and the parking lot (yes there is parking!) behind the building, and patio seating in front. All the tables looked dirty with crumbs. Coffee and soft drinks are self service. There is also a refrigerator case of other drink options. There's a deli case with lots of deli things and a pastry case. You can text your order ahead and skip the long line when you pick up.

Jeighten B.

Yelp
My lady friend and I tried the southern special, yet the chicken was drier than my mom's crockpot and the sauce game was fairly weak. Previously I had the heart attack which was so juicy and creamy but added a few lbs to the scale the next day. Overall great location with friendly staff and a large menu. Food came out very quick.

John H.

Yelp
I should preface this review with the fact that I've not visited the original Poppy's location, but I am happy to see they are expanding! This physical location I used to frequent with the fast-casual Noodle place that used to reside here, but I think Poppy's is a welcome addition to the Southend mix. They kept most of the furniture and kitchen set up, but there is a big open space right before you get all your sides/condiments/coffee/napkins... I feel like they can squeeze in a few more tables since the dining room is already tight as is. The back hallway has the entrance too the back of the store from the parking lot has single seat booths. You walk in, file toward the left into the queue and make your order with the eager staff waiting for you. I'm not sure how the hand-written ticket system works, but it does.. and you get a yellow copy that you take to the register where you way. Your name get's yelled out into the crowd for either pick up or pick up and bring back to a table. I went during peak Sunday crowd so there was a line, but it moved. Tried the eggs benedict on a plain, toasted bagel and it was good. I'd be interested to try some of their other offerings as far as prepared foods... there is also a case of donuts and sweets that were displayed for irrational impulse buying.

Kevin D.

Yelp
Poppys once upon a time had the best bagels in the city. This is no longer the case. They have gone downhill fast. There used to be a line out the door daily. Today i went on a sunday morning and there was not a soul in the place. It's pretty clear that they are under new management/ownership because the bagels are awful. Stale, hardly any seeds on the seeded bagels, and thin. Will not return as there are many better options around town these days.

Saifra Z.

Yelp
I love this place! Reminds me of home with the full selection of bagels, black and white Cookies, coffee cake and rainbow cookies. I usually just text my order in and it's ready when I arrive. Lastly, The staff is always friendly and efficient - even through out busy times and a pandemic. Plenty of parking in the back.

Stuart W.

Yelp
Best bagels in Charlotte. Hey - Charlotte is not NYC. Service is prompt and efficient but they can get slammed so it requires patience. Ambiance better at Providence Road location.

Jackie M.

Yelp
Listen I'm a gal from the northeast and every time I move to a new city I have to struggle to find a good (like an actually good) bagel place. Well I found it in Charlotte... actual NY bagels, good vibes, it's at Poppy's. I loved their blueberry bagels especially. 12/10 would recommend those. Cream cheese was also good, and that is a defining feature of a good bagel place. I also hung out for 30 mins eating my bagel and doing a bit of reading, and I found the vibes to be very calm and local, and feel right at home as I would in any northeast bagel shop! Some of the reviews are talking about loud music, trouble ordering a dozen, unclean... I honestly am confused because I didn't get any of that at all. Ordered a dozen bagels for my week and had a relaxing (and delicious) Saturday morning. Definitely come check it out here.

Brad B.

Yelp
This is the closest thing to an NYC egg and cheese bagel as I have found in Charlotte.

Nicholas L.

Yelp
I have to update from my last review. It was great but now .....I keep question everything in Charlotte I come across. Let me start saying service is quick, friendly enough and the food is good. But the music was inappropriate with language saying N* words left and right and obnoxiously loud. price and quantity is poor and the atmosphere is anything but charming. This is a NY bagel and coffee shop. The bagels are the best in uptown and southend so far I have found yes. Good breakfast bagel sandwiches. Traditional the right way. Real eggs. Not no scrambled crap. But at 10 am on a Sunday to enjoy the charming experience of a bagel and coffee shop I walk in with pop/hip hop music blasting. I mean really I gotta listen to music talking about wet P, and saying the N word left and right ? People having to talk way over the music. Being crowded was fine, but no much place to sit. Outside seating was neglected and shouldn't be to add to atmosphere. I come to these places to get away from the brunch and drink scene where it's loud and more of a fad to do then actually enjoying being out with your friends. That's what so great and charming about NY style or coffee bagel shops in general. Not to mention you save a bit more money. But not today. I got a bagel lox sand which with barely any lox on it. It doesn't even come open faced like It should. 15$. I got a coffee as well. Total 23$ to take myself out on a Sunday morning to a what I though was charming atmosphere in southend and enjoy a bagel sandwhich and coffee for I dunno 10$ for myself ? God I hope this isn't every weekend. And hopefully more Charming on the weekdays and Saturdays. Cause it's a decent place for Charlotte. But price- rip off. Like everything in Charlotte lately. Atmosphere , obnoxious. Like everything else in Charlotte. I've found the other neighborhoods have better atmosphere. Other big cities way better atmosphere. The scene here is just so wannabeghettofabulous. And I thought maybe I could get some normalcy on a Sunday morning coffee bage shop experience.
