The 18 Best Lobster Rolls On The East Coast & Northeast US - The Infatuation

"There are a lot of lobster rolls worth eating in Kennebunk and Kennebunkport. A slightly less busy but still extremely good pick is Port Lobster, a fish market that’s doling out a particularly mayo-forward roll. It’s really the quality of the lobster that’s shining here—the untoasted white bread bun is basically untouched, but it simply doesn’t matter when the seafood is this good and covered in this much mayo. This is the kind of lobster roll that’ll make you want to smooch the trapper, or at least give them a hug and convince them to take you on their boat." - carlo mantuano, anne cruz, team infatuation

Google
Absolutely a wonderful establishment! Small, no frills, simple spot to grab FRESH lobsters. Tyler helped us buy 15 lobsters and gave us lots of good info about lobstering in the area. He steamed and even provided us with some butter and made sure our bags wouldn’t leak. Great prices for the lobsters and the other seafood was reasonably priced. They also have other drinks, desserts, seafood items, and even beer for purchase. Parking was right upfront and we didn’t have to wonder around looking for a spot. Tyler was kind and patient with us and we had a good conversation with him about lobstering/seafood. We will be sure to tell everyone about this spot! The fresh lobsters were the highlight of our trip to Maine. THANK YOU!!!

Google
New ownership has ruined this place. Been going here for years, always praised the quality of the fish and lobster. Not so anymore. Haddock was fishy, lobster meat, which used to be claws and full tails, was cut up into tiny pieces and clearly not as fresh. My wife and I did not know that Port Lobster had changed ownership but after having the haddock and lobster, we independently investigated to see if ownership had changed--and sure enough, it had. DO NOT rely on older reviews. This place has lost a 20 year customer.

Google
Great take out place for quick lunch, or to get seafood to prepare at home. The lobster roll was fantastic, a little pricey but it's really stuffed. I got two frozen tails to bring home, and they gave me a gel pack to keep with them in my cooler. About 6 hours later they were still frozen solid (did have the AC blasting in the car, too). Counter people were super helpful and nice. Would definitely go back again.

***Update*** Thank you so much for the amazing quality and service of the lobster delivery to my parents in NC!!! My parents received their lobsters the day projected, cooked perfectly! My parents enjoyed them tonight and wanted to my sure you and everyone knew how happy they were!!!! Was so excited to visit Maine again after so many years. My must have was lobster! The reviews were so excellent, we had to stop! They were so friendly! Had an awesome visit and the lobster was exceptional. My daughter has never tried it and she loved it! Highly recommend stopping in for the lobster roll and any of their fresh fish.

Google
Very friendly service, nice and clean. There are plenty of fresh lobsters being offered here. They offer lobster rolls to go and so much more.

Google
Just happened to be sitting next door and saw the sign for 15.99 lobster roll and was like I will call in a to go order and go grab it! We took it to a local spot with a view to enjoy it. Lobster roll was on the smaller side, but for the price was great! There was a generous portion of meat on a perfectly buttered bun. Of course we dipped it in more butter because why not! It was a great place to get take out or order and have it shipped to you.

Chris

Google
Port Lobster 's staff was very helpful and friendly. Their pricing seems to be competitive and there was plenty of Lobster available. They also sell bottled beer. We were in and out within 15 minutes.

Google
Service was terrible, waited over 2 hours for dinner and dessert was a no show. We made a reservation and sat for more than 25 minutes, then service dropped off.

Kaitlyn K.

Yelp
After not the best service, when we went back we were greeted by a very gracious manager Stephanie who was appalled by the way the lobsters were sold and made restitution for the entire purchase. She was very helpful and responded immediately to our concerns.

John M.

Yelp
Been going to Port Lobster for over 15 years and always found the fish fresh and savory. My wife and I bought some haddock and lobster meat and both of us were very disappointed in the quality. The haddock was fishy and tasteless. The lobster meat, which used to be tails and claws, was cut up into small pieces and not as tasty as usual. Independently, we both wondered if there was new ownership because we had NEVER been disappointed at Port Lobster before. Sure enough, after looking, we found it was under new ownership. Do NOT rely on older reviews. This new ownership has ruined this place. How sad.

Yelp
I have been going to Port Lobster for years!!! I now live in California but visit them every summer. I also call them every Mother's Day to send my mother a gift card. (she lives in Kennebunk). However, this year I think they may be under new management now or something. I called a few times and kept being told that I will have to wait for the person to come in that takes those orders and also they charge a fee now to order a gift card; something they never did before. They always use to take my orders right away over the phone. It was a disappointment. Things evolve I guess.

Denise D.

Yelp
Wow, what a disappointment today. I've been stopping by here for close to 20 years. Their no frills lobster roll was always fresh and delicious with light mayo. I stopped by today on my visit to kennebunkport and ordered the roll. They proceeded to tell me they were purchased by a company that also owns Mabel's, next door, and other establishments.. explains why it was a little different inside: no great take home meals in the freezer nor whoppie pies. The lobster roll itself was on a stale toasted bun, too heavy on mayo and drizzled with butter!? No, just no. I was so sad! This place was always so good. Not today!!!!

Robin G.

Yelp
So worth the drive! It is a "shack" but parking was no problem! They were so friendly and helped us choose our meal and advice where to enjoy it - no onsite options, other than your car, but told us where benches were to enjoy a gorgeous view - right across the street. They also provided us with plenty of utensils and picnic essentials, including the bib! No mess. I read other reviews stating otherwise but maybe it was just a bad day or different staff? Anyway, we will go back.
google avatar

Vincenzo M.

Yelp
If you want a delicious lobster at a reasonable price go no further. OMG this was the best lobster I've ever eaten. Tender, sweet, and enormous. On our drive to Kennebunkport, I looked up lobster places and decided to go here. This is a fish market that will cook your lobster and give you the utensils, butter and lemon. Take a walk down by the water and enjoy your lobster. I will definitely come back next time I visit Kennebunkport, ME.

Yelp
Very no-frills, but the chowder was delicious. We tried the crab roll and lobster roll, both served cold. Just the bread and meat and we missed the drawn butter of other brands. It was acute little fish market that apparently has some killer horseradish though we didn't try it.
google avatar

Ethan N.

Yelp
Simple and fresh lobster rolls. The clam chowder was very good. Portions are small but comparable prices to other lobster restaurants. This place is a small seafood store so there's no dine in seating. The service was very friendly.

Mr B.

Yelp
Extremely low price lobster, and they cooked it perfectly They obliged me by Cracking the claws and providing me drawn butter. I took my lobster and ate it on a bench overlooking President Bush's compound at Walker Point

Yelp
Wife and I find this place while in town and are excited to try it it out. Immediately after walking in we find one of the most rude and unpleasant guys we have met in the state. We were nice and polite but all we got were short and rude one word responses. We continued our order and left without being rude ourselves. We get the whole tourist vs local thing, but to be honest business is business and rudeness has no place. The lobster roll was ok, but from looking at photos of other reviews, it appears we got the cuts and size of roll that matched the rudeness. We won't be back.
google avatar

Stephen W.

Yelp
This little shack truly lives up to the hype by boasting freshly caught lobster and a complimenting clam chowder. The price is as always expensive but better than the surrounding. Lobster at PLC is buttery and fresh that can't be best and the clam chowder has a great consistency. Recommend to anybody who wants to enjoy the taste of Maine.
google avatar

Augusto T.

Yelp
Just OK. The clam chowder was very enjoyable, but the lobster roll just didn't quite hit the mark. Perhaps it's because of the higher covid prices or it being the off-season, but the roll lacked flavor and quantity and did not feel worth it. Lobster rolls are rarely cheap, but I had another roll elsewhere that was more expensive and it was much more enjoyable even though I was far less hungry. Freshness matters and it seemed to be lacking in the lobster I tried during my visit. I'll try my luck elsewhere next time.

bill s.

Yelp
Lobsters. Can't get them any fresher. You can call Port Lobster and order ahead of time and take the cooked lobsters with you. Fair prices and nice people. Nothing better than brining back freshly cooked lobster and eating back at he hotel overlooking the ocean at sunset.

Yelp
Best.chowder.ever, hands down. I make it a point to sample clam chowder wherever I go, whether it's on the seaboard or hours in land. I've tried a lot and enjoyed a lot but this place blew my doors off. The chowder was chock FULL of perfectly cooked vegetables and most importantly, fresh clams. It was so rich and thick that I felt like I was floating on a cloud. Beyond this the lobster roll was fresh, tender, and perfectly prepared. While there is no seating inside it's a 1 minute walk or less to Oceanside benches along the beach. If you're staying local, there's simple cooking supplies and seafood staples available for purchase to take home. To top things off the service was courteous and friendly and there was no line at all when we visited on a Sunday at dinner time in July. This place is just a moment off the main tourist attraction path and we'll worth the adventure down exquisite Ocean Ave. Go now - you won't regret it!

Yelp
Amazing lobster dinner! I wish we could have found this place earlier during our small vacation/gate away. I will definitely come back next time I am in Kennebunkport ME. The lobster dinner was great, more than enough that two of us eat well. I have to try their other menu items, and their fresh seafood market for sure next time! The service and conversations were great also! Very friendly staff.

Sean T.

Yelp
This little lobster shack has very solid service and a fine ambiance. Unfortunately, the lobster rolls are just not what you should expect from a southern Maine lobster shack. Lobster was bathed in mayo, but was not toasted enough. Butter was not an option. There are many other places I would rather get a lobster roll around here
google avatar

Marty D.

Yelp
Great lobster roll but expensive there are a few places around that are cheaper but, many are closed in the off-season. To go no eat in.

Erica M.

Yelp
Best and freshest Lobster Roll in town! Albeit, a no frills place, but a lobster connoisseur would not hesitate to try this seaside place. This was a packed full flavorful lobster roll and to add to your finger licked moment -- the pricing was super reasonable. They also sell wine at reasonable pricing. There is no price gauging here. The only drawback is there is no seating available. You may like standing on the bridge and absorbing the view or find a table across the street. Wherever you chose to chow down this meal, it will be a tastebud worthy moment. It is worth the stop if you are near Kennebunk Port.
google avatar

Katy Q.

Yelp
So yes, we did the Port Lobster Co (PLC) vs. Guy Next Door (GND) challenge, mostly to justify our excessive spending of lobster rolls & clam chowder. Because when in Maine... PLC's lobster rolls were nice and simple - juicy chunks of the good stuff, packed in between a slice of bread. We opted for both hot & cold varieties, and even though they look small, they were filling. Butter one was tastier (thus was eaten quicker). PLC wins over GND due to price and taste and just hitting the right spot. PLC's clam chowder, may be alright by itself, seemed considerably bland compared to GND's. Missing that wholesome feeling you're supposed to get with a creamy bowl of soup. Either way, grab a bunch of rolls & a small bucket of soup, park in the (free) nearby beach front for that ocean view, and just breatheeee.
google avatar

Julia S.

Yelp
Good roll, better chowder. Very affordable compared to other places in town. My roll was $22 on 7/3/22 compared to $28 next door.
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
This is the place!!! Don't bother with the busy touristy locations. Take a couple extra minutes and walk here. It is the best! It's all takeout but then you can walk across the street and sit on a bench by the water and enjoy this fabulous food! PS the whoopie pies here are amazing!
google avatar

Yelp
This gets a rare one star from me because we didn't even get to try to lobster, thanks to the guy behind the counter. It's March - not the best time for lobster eating for sure. The guy was straightforward - he said the lobsters were expensive because the fishermen aren't going out much and there are no people etc, which I appreciated. But what was not straightforward was the pricing. They had a sign saying 1 lb lobster $13.99, 1 ¼ pound lobster $14.99 and 1 1/2 pound lobster was $15.99. I wanted the 1 1/2 pounder but he then said that would be $23 or somesuch. I said but the sign says $15.99 for a 1 1/2-pound lobster He couldn't explain to me why it was $15.99 on the sign but he wanted to charge me the higher price. I'm guessing the price was $13.99 per pound and maybe the sign was wrong, but I couldn't even wring that much out of him. I know we would pay much more in a restaurant but I started getting worried about what I'd be getting here in terms of freshness and quality. So we left without buying anything. Maybe during the season this is a good place but the whole experience turned me off. I used to live in New Hampshire and have been coming to Maine for years, even though we live farther now. This can't be written off as your "typical Maine local"because I know Maine locals and they are not this.
google avatar

Stephanie L.

Yelp
While other places had a long line, we got our food here fairly quickly. Make sure you call and order ahead. There's not too many parking spots so it's kinda a grab and go spot. Lobster rolls were delicious and a pretty good price too!
google avatar

Lizzie L.

Yelp
The best value ever. We ordered big size lobster roll for $24.95 (before tax), the lobster meat is fresh and delicious, and they are very generous with the volume of the lobster! Right now they only do the curbside pickup and take order through the phone only. If you don't get through to them, just be sure to call again until you reach someone. We are from New York, but the lobster roll we get in Long Island for the same price only has few pieces of lobster meat in it. Now we will never eat lobster roll in NY anymore. Lol
google avatar

Graham T.

Yelp
This place had THE BEST lobster rolls of anywhere We stop here every year while we are in OGT Full of lobster lightly dressed and superb Great fresh seafood also You must give it a try you will have discovered a real gem Thank you GREAT FOOD. GREAT PROCE. GREAT FRIENDLY SERVICE

Christie J.

Yelp
Great service! This was my first lobster roll. When so many other places were closed for the season, they were open and proud to give me this experience. So amazing!
google avatar

Ben M.

Yelp
The owner was rude and her establishment smelled of death and fish ass. Watch out as we walked out after arriving based on greeting and the horrible smell of the food.
google avatar

Ray V.

Yelp
Would have loved it to be better rated, but our chowder was tepid and the lobster roll was a bit tough.... And who the hell puts Old Bay on a lobster roll.

P O.

Yelp
Lobster roll was dry and over cooked. And there's no place to even eat it. It's a commercial shop so no tables or seats outside. And it's pricier than a restaurant
google avatar

Melody B.

Yelp
We arrived in Kennebunkport at 3pm, hungry after a day of travel. This lobster market sells lobster rolls and clam chowder (to go) that hit the spot and welcomed us to Maine.

Pat P.

Yelp
Everyone has different taste. The lobster is fresh. Good portion. But needed a squeeze of lemon and a bit more mayo. Used the s&p packet...bland otherwise. Roll is toasted...not buttered. No flavor there. 4 of us 'locals' got them. All agreed. Disappointed. Coleslaw was excellent, fresh and uncomplicated. Will get lobster rolls elsewhere for more flavor/lower price.
google avatar

James B.

Yelp
After visiting their lobster holding tanks at their shipping office next to their Resturant, we decided to order some live lobsters for our WS party to watch our Dodgers play in game 4. These guys are good and well known in that part of the country for quality seafood. I used their website to order 12 lobsters (1.5 pound each) for overnight shipping. Prices include shipping charges and are about the same as what they charge for similar size lobster at their Resturant. I called next day to confirm my order and let them know that I needed the lobsters by a certain date and time. Very nice lady helped me and assured me that I will have my package by 10:30 the next morning. Fed Ex delivered the live lobsters on time as promised. We had a blast with the kids opening the box and checking out the live lobsters. Great evening with family with great food. Too bad our Dodgers lost. Maybe we will do this again for Super Bowl when our Rams play.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
No frills, no overpriced seafood or lobster - amazing amazing to go spot. A must visit in Kennebunkport. We got two steamed lobsters in a bag, took them back to our bed and breakfast and enjoyed with a bottle of rose. Amazing cute spot, fresh seafood, lots of beverages to choose from and friendly staff. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Grant B.

Yelp
I am no lobster roll expert, although my family roots track back to Worcester Mass and Sanford Maine. However, while on the coast I was expecting a GREAT ONE. Facility is great, lobster tanks in the back with a staff all in rubber boots you immediately smell the coast of Maine. I got the large Lobster Roll. Quantity was AMAZING. The thing was overflowing with lobster and spilling into the styrofoam. The lobster was tough though and covered in too much mayonnaise and the bun wasn't quite toasted enough. It was not bad. It just was not good. I didn't finish. Staff was fast, I got the clam chowder too. Too many potatoes and very runny, not a lot of flavor. Nothing too bad, but nothing special going on here.

Brian P.

Yelp
New owner has ruined what used to be one of my favorite places. I'm local, and most of my local friends won't go there anymore either. Sad. I ordered 2 lobster rolls, 1 water, and 1 ice tea and the total was $92.00. The board had lobster rolls priced at $21.99. He said that's the price of a small, but the board only said "Lobster Roll". Deceiving at best. I expect governments and big business to disappoint me, but when a fellow small business owner down the street price gouges, it's disgusting. There are plenty of fair small businesses in this town, Port Lobster is no longer one of them.

Theresa W.

Yelp
Amazing clam chowder! The lobster rolls were grab - get toasted with butter and double meat for an incredible lobster roll.
google avatar

Fatboy S.

Yelp
The lobster meat in these rolls might be the freshest, best tasting lobster meat I've ever had. Not the largest, but for 15 bucks it's more than worth it. Take out was easy - just call beforehand. I think I like it better than the famous place down the street. Friendly customer service. Will def be back when in the area.
google avatar

Adam S.

Yelp
Ladies and gentlemen, if you happen to be in town, this establishment is the real deal in the world of Lobster Rolls. I really can't say anything else. Port Lobster is a no frills, take out joint that's authentic Maine. They have a variety of seafood options but do yourself a favor and get the large lobster roll, you will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Polly S.

Yelp
Located on Ocean Avenue right before The Colony Hotel, this small no frills seafood store will meet all your fresh off the boat needs. We went there and picked up ingredients for a seafood dinner feast including mussels, organic salmon, halibut and flounder. We heard great things about their takeout menu so we picked up lunch to go. It's worth noting that they don't have a designated space for customers to eat so it's takeout in the true sense of the word. Their lobster roll lunch box is the best deal in town at $12.99 which includes coleslaw and chips. Their clam chowder is an absolute must-try. THE best clam chowder I have ever had and I am kicking myself for not having gotten the largest container size. I will definitely be back to try the haddock chowder when available.
google avatar

Shawn A.

Yelp
Holy cow! Probably the best Lobster Roll I've had. It had the essentials Tasted Bun, Butter and Fresh Lobster. Fresh catch of the day Lobsters sit in the tanks, so you know they are fresh. The location and view is great and they are $12.99. They aren't huge but so incredibly good. I will drive back for another one. If not walk over now.
google avatar

Sue W.

Yelp
Mainly (no pun intended) a seafood market with a large somewhat pricey selection. Order at the counter and then take the food to your car or wander around outside to eat. The Lobster roll came in a brown paper container with a couple of paper napkins. Nice chunks of sweet lobster mixed with a bit of mayo served on a toasted (optional) piece of white bread/roll. I know the lobster is the star but a little celery or onion and some seasoning would have been an improvement. It was good enough but cannot justify the $17 price tag. It comes with no sides. Guess I don't get the hype.
google avatar

Dorothy B.

Yelp
Wow. We are here from Virginia visiting friends and they went to Port Lobster for carry out. My friends had reserved some hard shell lobster and they were amazing. Really full of meat and perfectly cooked. And a bargain price! My friends said they did right by them. Also we had their awesome clam chowder which was full of clams. Yum yum. The service was friendly. Go there!
google avatar

Kim D.

Yelp
Craving a lobster roll first thing in the morning. Big plus, they were open. The rolls were reasonable at $19.95. However the lobster meat didn't have that fresh, sweet taste for me. And the bun fell apart 2 bites in. It was just okay, but the lady at the counter was very nice and the price was reasonable.
google avatar

Liz A.

Yelp
Hidden gem for sure. The hot buttered lobster roll will knock your socks off! It's a takeout only place, but grab a lunch box and head across the street to the pier. They sell wine and beer too if you are in the mood to make lunch a little more fun. This is a place not to miss if you are in the area.
google avatar

Kylie B.

Yelp
Such a hidden gem for delicious seafood! The lobster roll was piled high with lobster and the clam chowder did not lack the clams. It's a walk up window so call ahead so you don't have to wait or check out some of the shops across the street while you wait.
google avatar

Heidi S.

Yelp
This place was really cool. Chill vibes, small interior and there was lots of outdoor seating. My family got a couple lobsters and a lobster roll. Good food.
google avatar

Amanda A.

Yelp
Lobster roll was great, tasted fresh. I only give 4 stars because the prices aren't amazing and the roll itself was very plain, but if you're in the area and looking for a lobster roll, this won't dissapoint.
google avatar

Jackie L.

Yelp
THE place in Kennebunkport to get a lobster roll! This no frills joint is the real deal. There are many choices to get a lobster roll in the area...make the right choice and get yours at Port Lobster Co. Their lobster rolls are available in small or an upgraded 'large' size. The large is 100% worth the upgrade. The rolls are packed with big chunks of yummy lobster and just light on the mayo. Just thinking about their lobster rolls makes me happy!
