Port of Call Food Hall Opens in Charleston - Eater Carolinas

"Charleston once again has a food hall, and this time it’s on Market Street in the former Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. location. New venture Port of Call is now open at 99 South Market Street. The 10,000-square-foot space holds five vendors, offers a full bar with an emphasis on craft beers, and includes an outdoor dining area. The food stalls include up-and-coming names like smoked meats spot Palmira BBQ, Asian fusion setup Bok Choy Boy, Greek grill house Bapkó, acai place Iaca Bowls, and raw bar Empire Oyster. Port of Call now fills that void left by the closing of Workshop earlier this year. It is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m." - Erin Perkins

Delicious Southern Comfort at Port of Call We visited Port of Call in Charleston for lunch on a Friday with a party of four and had a great experience from start to finish. We made a reservation in advance and were seated promptly inside near the bar, a cozy and lively spot with a great atmosphere. I ordered the chicken biscuit sampler, and it did not disappoint. The biscuits were incredibly fresh and buttery, and each variation had its own delicious twist. It was a generous and filling dish, beautifully presented and packed with flavor. You have to try it if you’re visiting! Overall, the service was friendly, the food came out quickly, and the entire experience was smooth and satisfying. Port of Call is definitely a spot worth checking out for a laid-back, flavorful lunch in Charleston.

The Kraken was great! Perfectly seasoned home fries, buttery biscuits, and the chicken was great, albeit a tad too salty. It's a heavy meal—good to split with another person. Drinks were good as well. Great service and atmosphere. Good napkin quality.

We came to this restaurant for the outdoor seating, as we had a group of seven and three dogs. Halfway through lunch, it started raining, but Brian—with a Y—immediately jumped into action. He dragged over umbrellas to help keep us dry and made sure we were taken care of. His upbeat attitude, sense of humor, and friendly conversation made us all feel so welcome. Bryan truly turned what could have been a soggy lunch into a fun, memorable experience. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
Enjoyed the outdoor seating for our large group, with live music. Fun brunch menu, plenty of options for the whole family. Really enjoyed the fried green tomorrows and the waffle tots with cheese and bacon.

Google
Great place to eat outside. Little warm today but there is lots of shade and fans. Live music and the food was quite good. Right next to the market so very convenient.

Google
Stopped in for lunch before going to the city market. First things first brunch is available everyday until 3 which is awesome. Our server Faith while being new was very knowledgeable and helped us enjoy a wonderful lunch. I saw a review here that said the chicken sandwich is "on point" I will concur the chicken sandwich was legit. Waffle tots were delicious as well. Five ⭐ will be joining them again for eats and atmosphere.

Google
Port of Call was absolutely amazing to work with! My husband and I just celebrated our wedding reception, and it was perfect thanks to this amazing team! The food was delicious, team was so kind and responsive, and we would do it all over again. Thank you for making our day so special. 🤍

Google
Very nice spot for food and drinks. I only went for drinks and they have a smaller variety of craft beer and drinks. The outdoor seating is very nice and cozy. Service was great, just on the slower side. The live 90s country music was good, a little loud for me as I couldn't hear my wife talking (who was sitting across from me). I would go again 🍻

Yelp
Great beer and environment. The service is so amazing. Vibes are unmatched here it's insane. I love Ellie & Faith so much they are amazing people

Yelp
The food is delicious. The scrambled eggs are light and fluffy, like biting into a cloud. The fried chicken is juicy inside and crispy outside. The gravy has great flavors. The home fries are a big hit, with spices that are just right. The mac and cheese is so good that we went back two days in a row! The atmosphere is nice, too, especially with live music. I will definitely come back.

Yelp
Stopped here as part of a food tour and the only thing I ate was chicken bog. Got the story of the chicken bog - was interesting to eat it. Not a big fan. But, I could see how if I'd actually gotten a piece of the chorizo or some chicken it might be good. The rice itself was short grain and supposedly the appeal of this is that it gets creamy when cooked. We were told it was $18/lb. I prefer arborio. Anyway, nice atmosphere, and I'd go back and try other things.

Yelp
Needed some lunch and saw open outdoor tables so stopped for a fried chicken sandwich and a grilled fish sandwich. Both were excellent! Also great French fries. Service was good, fun music playing outside. Would go back again.

Yelp
We ate lunch here today. The food was really good. It was piping hot The fish sandwich was the snapper today. I was overheated and couldn't eat much, but what I did eat was delicious. I didn't like the fried Okra. It was too soft inside. The fried pickles were really good. The best I've had so far. My friends loved their food. My son said the chicken sandwich was great. The coleslaw was eh.. but I am picky about coleslaw. The sweet tea was really sweet, just how I like it. The service was excellent. She brought us refills very quickly. The Vibe-Ambience of the place was really good. We sat inside as today was so hot and humid. Overall, it wasn't perfect but it was definitely a good choice. I brought my food home to eat for dinner. I don't handle the heat well so it was pretty hard for me to eat. All I could do was drink water and tea. The price was a bit pricey but nowadays everything is. Total of 73 dollars with the tip, for two people to eat and an appetizer. Update: We just had dinner, I cooked the leftovers in the air-fryer including the okra that I wasn't fond of at the restaurant. It was not cooked enough earlier but ten minutes in the air fryer and I am in love. Those Okra are addicting and I am sad that I don't have more. Cooking them with the pickles give them such a nice flavor. The batter was crispy. Each bite was Heaven. So if they cooked the okra just a little longer they would be perfect.

Yelp
Came through yesterday and learned Port of Call is now a restaurant vs. a food court style with a variety of foods as seen in the past. Either way, we were happy to find a place to accommodate 6 people which can be tricky in downtown without a reservation. The staff is courteous and friendly, kept our glasses full, and checked-in ample amounts. The pricings are typical for downtown so no surprises there. The menu featured brunch and lunch options like salads, egg dishes, sandwiches, dessert. My first pick was the shrimp and grits but they were out. My 2nd choice was a grilled fish (red snapper) sandwhich which contained a cole slaw and some veggies plus a side of fries. The food itself was great, not overly salty which I appreciate. In a stitch for big groups, Port of Call fits the bill. As far as southern cuisine - meh not so much.

Yelp
Really delicious food, fun atmosphere and energetic staff. The live music was top notch!

Yelp
Great service by Austin and delicious food. Spicy margarita and spicy Bloody Mary are out of this world. Outdoor seating with talented live music.
google avatar

Yelp
This is my 3rd time at port of call and the 1st time dining there after it turned into a full service restaurant. The food that they serve is southern style and they have a great brunch menu. I really appreciate the variety of drink choices they have that their full service bar and the bartenders are super nice and will tweak the drinks to your liking. They also have a great outdoor space with an outdoor bar, a pineapple hut, and live music! It's a great place to stop to take a break from shopping, to grab lunch, or just to hangout!
google avatar

Raven T.

Yelp
This is a really cute food hall outside of Charleston City Market. It definitely gives a touristy vibe not only from the nature of food halls being a "trendy" but also the aesthetic and pricing. I like the outdoor seating with the bar and pineapple hut and that's kind of where the good things end. I came here with three others. We all ordered from different stalls and not one of us was particularly satisfied with her meal. I ordered tacos, steak and shrimp with rice and beans. When I tell you everything was bland! No flavor at all! I didn't think that was possible with Mexican food. Whew the disappointment!

Yelp
Food service and ambience great!! Outdoor acoustic guitarist for lunch. Chill vibe. Love it.

Yelp
This is my first time in Charleston and I haven't had food that isn't delicious yet. Today me and my friend spent the afternoon walking around the market and we stopped here for food. There's a charcuterie place, a taco place, a burger place, a Greek place and another one I can't remember. There's also a couple bars (one inside and one outside) and a frozen yogurt stand. We got food from the Greek place and it was delicious. The Greek salad had a nice, light vinaigrette that accented the salad quite well. The souvlaki was juicy and flavorful. The falafel pita was perfect. The falafel itself was crunchy on the outside (but not too crunchy) and soft (but not to soft) on the inside. The vibe is perfect for a sunny, breezy day. Comfortable seating and plenty of it, a jumbo jenga, a firepit. The tables have umbrellas so there's shaded areas. Very, very lovely.

Yelp
While the menu was not very extensive, everything we had was delicious and well-prepared. We tried the grit tots and fried pickles & okra. Both yummy with great sauces. Our table's entrees consisted of the short rib grilled cheese, the fried chicken sandwich, a burger, the fish-of-the-day sandwich, and a salad. Fresh, yummy meals. I personally had the fish, which was redfish. Got it blackened, and it was perfectly cooked and nice and flaky. Really good beverage menu from beers to cocktails! Service was great and we liked the atmosphere. Would like to go back and enjoy live music on the patio some time!

Yelp
A sweltering day in Charleston--this was a great place to duck into and grab a drink/food. Picked the chicken sandwich and it was solid. Moist, perfectly crisp, with great flavor. Fries were really good, too. Service was great and we didn't wait long for anything. Would recommend this place for sure!
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and brews. Service was friendly and fast. We came in from out of town and loved the atmosphere and the vibes of this spot. Would definitely revisit next time we are in Charleston.

Yelp
Was craving a grilled cheese and cornbread so bad so we came here. The food hit the spot, our server was nice, and the atmosphere was great. My fav was the honey butter and cornbread

Yelp
While walking we stumbled across this place and decided to stop in and grab a bit to eat and grab a beer. I will say it was not what I was expecting. But the food was good. So there are 4 different restaurant fronts kind of like a mall food court. We went to the burger one and the other folks in our party went to the Greek stand. The burgers were good and the gyros were huge. This anything fancy and there isn't a lot of seating inside but there was construction going on so I'm not sure if that will change in the future. We ended up sitting at the outdoor bar. The bartender was nice and funny. I ended up getting a key lime Martini which was one of the best ones I have had. Overall if you are looking for something quick to eat after shopping at the market it's worth a try if you are looking for something basic.

Yelp
Parking is a bit of a hassle to find in downtown Charleston, but it is well worth it to find a spot. It is great to come here during the spring/summer/early fall because there is only outdoor seating and it is first come first serve. I recommend to have a plan and decide what you're going to order and have one person wait at the table. We ordered one thing from every place and divided it among the three of us. We finished everything except for the nachos that weren't covered with any topping. Everything was very flavorful and delicious. I highly recommend going in a big group!
google avatar

Tanvee S.

Yelp
The atmosphere is really what sold me on this place! It is a cute food court next to Charleston City Market and has outdoor live music, cute tables on the inside, and plenty of seating. The food options were great and they had a LOT of food for each cuisine. I thought that it would be a more casual food court but the food was very well made and I really enjoyed it! I wish the guac (mexican place) had more flavor and the hush puppies had some sauce, but overall no complaints with this place.
google avatar

Yelp
it was certainly a big disappointment. My wife, my grandson, my son and his friend joined me at the restaurant for a special lunch. It turned out to be less than exciting. The waiter was not particularly helpful with getting service very quickly. It may or may not have been his fault but he was AWOL for most of the meal. i ordered a chicken sandwich And it was almost a half of an ounce of chicken so little I couldn't even satisfied. However the French fries were absolutely the greatest. McDonalds would be embarrassed next to them.

Yelp
We wanted to grab a quick bite to eat before heading to the airport and noticed this Food Hall was right in the area (we had just finished a carriage ride). We stopped in on Monday (Memorial Day). It wasn't particularly crowded, but they had a bunch of people enjoying food/drinks while listening to music outsdie. I was in the mood for seafood, but unfortunately the shrimp was fried which is never a good idea for my sensitive stomach. And so i went with a shrimp burrito bowl at the Mexican restaurant. While it paled in comparison to all the amazing food I ate in Charleston, it filled me up...and was fun to listen to music while eating it outside. We got ourselves some pineapple soft serve (yum) and walked back to the hotel to catch our uber to the airport. Until next time, Charleston!

Yelp
Loving this food hall right off Market St downtown. It's great to see something as touristy as Bubba Gump Shrimp Co become something hyper local after changing hands. There was definitely a need for another food hall after workshop closed and not only is it great for hungry folks to have amazing food options, but it gives restaurants and food trucks an opportunity to test out a restaurant without as many upfront costs of their own brick and mortar. You can kind of consider this a proving ground to see how the market responds and if it should the owners/chef should pursue a permanent location. When you walk in, take a loop and wee what types of food there are and narrow down what you'd like to eat. With friends? Have everyone get something different and share (if you're into that). They also have a bar for drinks and tons of seating upstairs... with another bar (which wasn't open when I was there but it was a midweek and midday). I love that they have the huge patio outside too and they had live music when I was there. Keep this place on rotation because you'll see new food stalls popping up from time to time making it always something new to try.

Yelp
This is a great place that allows different food options for the various taste buds in the family. For Lunch you have the following establishments: Taco Art - Tacos, Argo - Greek, Chucktown Smash Burger - Smash burgers, Low Co Seafood Shack - seafood Pineapple hut - Frozen Deserts Board at Home Charcuterie Co - Charcuterie Two bars Add to it higher class dinner options Raw Lab by Empire Oysters - Raw Bar Pisco Mar - 8 course prix fixe Peruvian cuisine I was extremely happy with a large chucktown classic double beef smashed burger with cheese, pickle, thinly sliced onion garlic aioli on a potato bun with a side of seasoned fries. Just yum The wife went with the Tacos. One was shrimp (supposed to be blacken but I did not see it), with an excellent fresh pineapple salsa. The other was Baja Steak with red onion and cilantro. She thought and I agreed that the meat was a bit on the tough side. We both got a excellent Pecan Stout from the bar. Overall a very good concept and meal at the market

Yelp
NO VEGAN options!! Review we saw was misleading. Last night with kids in tow. had so looked forward to the food and fair after reading the great ratings. So sad that it was closed at 8:15 on a Friday night! Ai Ai Ai! Returned the next day. Cool place with live music. Side salads and drinks. Lesson learned! Always review the menu before committing.

Yelp
I tried port of call when a friend came in town. It is the perfect spot to hang out, listen to music, drink, and not feel the pressure of picking the wrong dinner spot lol. This place has a little something for everyone. It reminds me of the workshop, but smaller. I liked how this place is uniquely located downtown. It is really close to a lot of things, so you can walk to other activities easy. I had Greek food and my friend had Asian food. It was good. We also tried a few new drinks. The bartender was very nice and they had huge TVs playing the games. Overall, great spot to bring friends.

Yelp
Went in late afternoon and it was very chill. Drinks were good! The fried green tomatoes were totally yum!

Yelp
Was super excited to check this place out. Located right outside the super touristy market, this place didn't feel like that at all. The businesses have made a pretty significant social media presence, so I knew what I was going to get prior to arrival, but checked out the variety of offerings anyway- Greek, Asian, poke/açaí bowls, Italian, and bbq. There was a great outdoor area with bar and picnic tables with almost a brewery vibe. Inside, another large bar, the businesses, and upstairs, tables and restrooms. It seemed to be short staffed when we arrived, the bartender was indirectly encouraging us to sit outside (it was cold) and we were unsure of where to sit or take our trays after completed. This place is a great alternative to fast food and is a great way to highlight new businesses or food truck to brick and mortar businesses.
google avatar

Patricia P.

Yelp
I came for Bok Choy shareable dumplings with chicken and leeks filling, miso butter and aged balsamic soy sauce which is so good and their lumpia. Everything were so delicious and I will come here again to try other food in their menu.
google avatar

Chad H.

Yelp
Love this place, we went last weekend for brunch and day drinking. Food was great. Atmosphere was awesome, live music at a Sunday brunch. Great service (Meghan F). I would stress wheelchair friendly!!
google avatar

Joseph S.

Yelp
This place is amazing! Located across from the historic Market on South Market Street, this food hall has a terrific outdoor patio and contemporary design inside the food hall itself. There are 4 food stalls offering everything from bbq to Greek to Asian to oysters. My wife and I's favorite was Palmira BBQ. The fried chicken sandwich and pulled bbq were absolutely delicious as were the sides of rice & hash and Palmira beans. The owner of Palmira BBQ is actually from Puerto Rico and sometimes offers traditional Puerto Rican dishes on the menu which is awesome. We definitely plan to come back many times.
google avatar

Melissa G.

Yelp
Port of call is a great place to hang out and has a bunch of different restaurant options inside. The outside has a bar and corn hole boards which ads to the fun. The restaurants inside didn't seem to be all open at the same time which makes the food options a bit limited, so I would probably not plan dinner there but just come or the fun and drinks.
google avatar

Allen A.

Yelp
This place is great. We had outdoor music and the food was great. The place is a little like the food court of a mall inside because it holds multiple min-restaurants. That said, don't take the mall analogy too literally because the food was actually pretty good. See pictures. Here are a few of the different restaurant menus when you get here. I got a poke bowl and really liked it and they were able to make it gluten-free. My whole family ate here and I think everybody ate at a different one of their restaurants but everybody ended up really liking the food.
google avatar

Nicole P.

Yelp
A great place to grab a drink, meal or snack! I always love food halls as they offer so many different options in one place. This one was small with about 5 different food stalls including tacos, Greek, burgers and seafood. There was also a bar both inside and outside. I had a delicious burger from ChuckTown Smash Burger. They had asked for my number though to text me when my food was ready but I never got a text and had gone upstairs to find a table expecting to be notified by phone. Outside is also the pineapple hut which I highly recommend!! A refreshing pineapple desert at a reasonable price of $6 for a large. The food hall was right around the corner from our hotel and we wanted to go back for another meal but unfortunately it closed early on Sunday. There was live music on the weekends outside which provided a nice place to hang out right in downtown located next to the city market.
google avatar

Yelp
In Charleston for my 69th birthday weekend! Plan is to start off of with something casual and work up to the heavy hitters later in the week. Port of Call Food fit the bill perfectly for the casual start. Short walking distance from the Fulton Inn; the food hall features three or four different food choices. My wife chose Greek, specifically the gyro. I opted for the pulled pork sandwich at the barbecue place. I think it was called Whole Hog. Since my wife is not a big eater I was able to wolf down my pulled pork sandwich, moist and flavored by me with some nice sauces, and part of her gyro. The gyro filling, lamb topped with a perfect amount of fresh tomatoes and tzatziki, was wrapped in a tasty, soft pita. Fries were good, especially mine which were seasoned. We ate our food while listening to some live music provided by the Port of Call. Nice place for a casual bite!

Yelp
This is a much needed addition to the revitalization of the Market Street dining experience. This facility has indoor and outdoor seating, a downstairs and upstairs bar, outdoor bar, cornhole, amazing ethnic food options, large screen televisions for the sports fans and a great urban vibes From poke to oysters, there are solid options It's a casual one stop shop of great food and good vibes

Susannah M.

Yelp
Food was great! Our server, Riley, was quick and friendly. Greeted us immediately with coasters, prebussed our table and refilled drinks without us asking. Definetly will be coming back.

Jack M.

Yelp
Great time. Had a wedge salad and it was great, fresh and flavorful. Super service and music was spot on.

Stacie T.

Yelp
I've been several times recently and everything has been delicious- especially the short rib grilled cheese and the fried green tomato blt sandwiches. The loaded grit tots were also unusual and tasty. Our server, Riley, was attentive and friendly. We definitely will come back!
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
Wonderful ambiance, great food and a wonderful server, Austin. he indicated he was new but he was terrific! Answered all our questions, his recommendations were spot on (if you love crispy perfect fries you'll love this place) and he even sent us with to-go drinks. We had the burger and the fish sandwich, delicious!
google avatar

Jocelyn V.

Yelp
Was greeted with a warm smile from our attentive server Gina. The spinach salad was great. Definitely recommend.

Want You To Know G.

Yelp
It's a place to eat, but food is mediocre. We tried different things, but none of it was great. The biscuits and gravy was salty and nothing special. The staff was just ok, although one young fellow was nice that refilled waters. But we waited for a long time and it wasn't that busy, and then the server wasn't really friendly. Having been a server for years, I recognize that it's important to care for your customers versus just being entitled to receive a nice tip!! A tip should be given when you e received great service.
google avatar

Christy M.

Yelp
Got a Greek salad and a smash burger with fries for the kids. Both were excellent and I appreciate the chill environment to relax for a bit.
google avatar

Bella M.

Yelp
We stopped for a pineapple soft serve located outside, and stayed a while to listen to the live music. The musician who was playing today (@dr_scarr) was really good! Such a relaxed ambiance and atmosphere to sit outside and enjoy food/drink with live music. We also got a cheese quesadilla for my little one and she enjoyed it.
google avatar

Dan K.

Yelp
Went to Palmira bbq. I ordered the barbecue platter and it came out cold. I am not one to bring food back. I am let down because it was not busy at all and the person at the counter was just sitting down and i almost didn't see them. My platter was pricy and i don't think that they put the attention on the food. They were also out of products and i had to change around the order. Ill try some other booths if we return but was underwhelmed with the energy inside overall. The bar outside was great and the music was a great touch.
google avatar

Chantal W.

Yelp
I took my family there yesterday for lunch. It was terrible. The service was even worse. We had a party of 7 and they sat us at a table for 6 without an extra chair. We had to go find a chair. We had to ask at least 8 times for water, asked for a specific item at least 6 times and only received after we finished our meal. All the fries were cold and stale. My sandwich was cold and soggy greasy. Not edible at all. The calamari was obviously fake meat. The fried green tomato blt didn't even have a tomato on it. Nothing but excuses from the server. I'm so embarrassed that my out of town family came to Charleston and had this terrible experience.
google avatar

Timothy A.

Yelp
I'm pretty happy with this location on Market St. It reminds me of Workshop (or was it Warehouse?). They've done a great job renovating the site from when it was Bubba Gump. Inside is really clean with plenty of seating and A/C, but there's outside seating too, and they often have live music. Several options inside for food and drink. Italian, Greek, Asian, etc. Can't wait to come back and try something new.

Sarah M.

Yelp
First- food was amazing like genuinely amazing. Loaded tots were best But, kitchen was pretty slow. Also, prices aren't available online?? Inconvenient but not world-ending
google avatar

Alex E.

Yelp
This is casual outdoor venue with several food stalls and a beer stand. There were a couple of families on the patio, and the venue provided blocks for toddlers - a nice touch. I found the food to be, well, fine. I selected from the Filipino-themed stand and enjoyed a nice noodle and veggie bowl. I paired it with a beer from the stand's extensive list, and finished with cold dessert from another stand. Here's the thing: fine is, well, fine. I wasn't blown away, but neither was I disappointed. The next time I'm in the neighborhood, I'll probably stop in at Port of Call.

Yelp
We had the Low Country Boil & hush puppy side order. It was easily enough for 2 people! The low country boil was simple & tasty & FRESH! Hush puppies were outrageously delicious! Service was excellent, price was quite reasonable! We both had on tap beer. We sat outside in courtyard & enjoyed live music & great ambiance! I'd give this all the stars!
