Porta Review - Jersey City - New York - The Infatuation

"Porta is a pizza place in Jersey City with picnic-style seating and lots of families and groups. It’s also a good place to hang out if you’re waiting for a table at Razza (which is very close by). In that case, there’s a long bar area where you can drink a cocktail or a glass of wine. photo credit: Alex Staniloff" - Hannah Albertine

Google
Love the vibe at Porta. They have a great menu and a good selection of beers. Their pizzas are so tasty and our favorite is the carbonara pizza. Thank you Alison for your helpful and friendly hospitality!

Google
Great drinks and great food! There’s a ton of seating in this establishment. There’s a rooftop and a basement. Does get quite popular. The Italian Stallion pizza was fantastic and packs quite a kick! Cocktails are also delicious.

Porta in Jersey City has always been a go-to spot for a fun and lively dining experience, and my recent visit was no different. The Food: Octopus and Potatoes I decided to give this dish another try, but unfortunately, it missed the mark. The octopus was slightly overcooked, and the dish was a bit too salty, which overshadowed the flavors. Betty Pie The Betty Pie, however, was the star of the night! This pizza is, in my opinion, the best on Porta’s menu. With its perfectly thin crust and light, flavorful toppings, it’s an absolute must-order. The Atmosphere: Porta’s lively and vibrant ambiance always makes it a fun spot to visit, whether for a casual night out or a special occasion. The Service: The staff at Porta continue to shine with their attentiveness and friendly demeanor, ensuring every visit feels special. While the octopus wasn’t as enjoyable this time, the outstanding Betty Pie and fantastic service keep Porta at the top of my list for great food and good vibes. I’ll definitely be back soon!

It took way too long to be seated with tables available. The pizza was good. The calamari was good but small portion. The waiter forgot about us. I had high hopes for Porta. Will I go again? I don’t think so.

Google
Great Pizza, decently priced and friendly staff. Food came quite quickly, everyone really enjoyed what they had. I personally had the meatball pizza and it was ridiculously good. Can genuinely recommend this place and would come here again.

Google
Went for an event. The sound is weird there. Its offset to the side of the dj booth. Also no monitor so if you wanna hear what you're mixing well...sorry lol. Upgrade your sound and have a professional set it i Up.

Google
The mushroom risotto was delicious, and the pizza was good, though nothing out of the ordinary. We also tried a non-alcoholic cocktail, which was refreshing and enjoyable. Overall, a nice dining experience.

Google
Went for a quick lunch, had the fresh mozzarella which was delightful - $10 is a lot but it was so good. Arugula pizza $18 was tasty and fresh but it had a crazy amount of arugula. Had the gnocchi pasta $30 was great flavor wise but all of their portions are small. Didn’t get to take a picture of the pasta. Service could have been better. Host was missing when people arrived and many people waited. Waiters and waitresses took a bit to check on us and others. Overall the food taste was 10/10, just the attentiveness and portion size lacked.

Yelp
This is a lovely community-esque like restaruant that serves really tasty pizza and pasta. The community vibe comes the communal tables. There are 2 entrances. We entered through the back one and had to walk to the front to find the host desk. It was not too crowded which was nice. There was a family at the other end of the table. Later one, another couple saw at the table as well, but there's enough distance where you can still have a conversation. The service was a bit slow. It did take some time to get the server to the table, but I liked my pasta and my husband liked his pizza. Desserts were a decent size and we'd definitely go back on a chill night.

Yelp
Pass on this place. Portions are terrible. A double pesto risotto is really a single with the portion I got, flavor was ok, but had the consistency of soup, super watery. Terrible. Fried calamari was unseasoned, flavorless, small, and chewy. The portion size was abysmal for the price, the tiniest plate for $16 but did us a favor considering the calamari had less flavor than a paper plate. Service was ok. I definitely wouldn't come here again

Yelp
The pizza here looks good and it tastes ok but the whole composition of the pizza was just horrible. The crust was all soggy and wet and I couldn't even hold a slice without all the toppings sliding off into a big slop on the plate. The restaurant seems to be a popular place with a lot of people coming to hang out and grab drinks but I cannot imagine that people here can rave about the pizza because it was not up to par. It's a shame because the pizza ovens are really top tier but the way the pizzas are made just aren't cutting it despite the pizzas looking good on a plate. Service was also ok as well but not memorable since we barely saw our server.

Yelp
Went on a weekend night for a friend's birthday, and though I loved the atmosphere and food was decent, we had an underwhelming experience. We sat upstairs on the covered rooftop area since the downstairs was reserved for a hopping wedding reception. Happy to report the music did not disturb the upstairs space, though the staff seemed inattentive. I'm not sure if they were overwhelmed -but- there were consistently 2-3 staff just hanging in a corner on the upstairs level where we were. When receiving food, a woman in our party was given her appetizer (mozzarella) but no utensils. No one came by to check in on us until much later, when we were already given entrees. I got a cocktail glass so full it was spilling over when the runner dropped it off, and it didn't redeem itself in flavor either. Calamari was okay but presentation is poor in that deep bowl. Pizza was great for the ones I had but others at my table shared that the middle on their meatball pie was not cooked enough! The prices for everything were more than they were worth - mi dispiace Porta, non tornerò.

Yelp
Tried several dishes but must say that food is ok, most are not memorable. Service is good though. Billy ocean is too tart. It's marked as double portion but it's more like a single person portion. Hence, it's expensive and not worth the price. Pizza is decent. Meatball is better than Italian stallion. Calamari is my favorite appetizer but this is a meh here. Three trees is an unlikely surprise. Big portion and tasted good.

Yelp
This is my second time coming to this restaurant. It is conveniently located right across the street from the PATH train. The staff here were very hospitable. The bartender Emily made me the best peach mocktail. The bathrooms are clean and the seating is spacious with many floors. I will be returning very soon.

Yelp
Came here with a party of 8 with a Friday evening reservation and was seated immediately. Meatball pizza - my favorite item out of everything I tried. It has a generous amount of meatballs, mozzarella and a tender, chewy, crusty dough. Italian stallion - similar toppings to the meatball pizza except it doesn't have as much Italian sausage as the meatball. I enjoyed the meatball pizza more. Squid ink pasta with mussels - the pasta is al dente and so has a good toothsome chew. However, the tomato sauce that came with the pasta tasted fresh, but was too tangy and underseasoned for my liking. Wished it was more balanced. Being a double portion entree, the serving size of the dish probably feeds 1 hungry person or 1.5 persons max. Definitely not enough for 2. Fried calamari - this is just okay. Not super crunchy/crispy, and the tomato dipping sauce although tasted fresh, is also too tangy. Wished it was a little more balanced. They have a large space which is good for large parties. Our server was nice but a little hard to get ahold of. The pizzas came out very quickly, but some of the other food also took quite long to arrive. Our server said it's because there is a private party happening that night and apologized for the delay. Hopefully it's their off day.

Yelp
Recently went back to Porta and it is still just OK. The atmosphere is lively and the roof is nice. The food was pretty good; a few menu items were pricey for the final product. They need to work on pizza execution. Both pictures are the carbonara pizza from my last couple experiences. There's always a slice that's overcooked, has no toppings, or is 3" of crust, that no one at the table wants to eat. Lastly, the bar staff acted like they didn't really care to be there. This place has potential if service and execution was worked on.

Yelp
After being multiple times, can say with certainty this place is mid (Asbury and Montclair and better for sure). The pizza is decent but would stay away from the corn pie - rather flavorless. Chicken cutlets were a bit dry. Definitely recommend the meatballs, sausage and mozzarella. Service is usually a miss (no silverware, asking multiple times for things before they arrive, etc). My biggest gripe is they're extremely cheap about the air conditioning inside. A few weeks back I had a reservation and after being seated we decided to leave because there was no AC on and the pizza ovens are letting off so much heat. Not sure how the staff is able to even deal with it to be honest.

Yelp
Really large space - there's plenty of tables and bar seating in the front, downstairs venue space, and a rooftop! Great spot to pop in for happy hours and their musical events. We got the Carbonara pizza, which had a sharp cheese flavor to it that made it less overwhelming/heavy. The 14 1/2 pizza was definitely spicy, so go easy on the red pepper flakes!
google avatar

Sara G.

Yelp
Spaghetti, acorn squash, and corn pizza are our favorites from the menu. The roof is awesome, especially in the winter, as it's kept super warm and cozy. Abraham is an awesome bartender, always quick and friendly while making awesome drinks
google avatar

Sne G.

Yelp
Sneaked in for a quick pizza fix to Porta on a Friday evening. Great vibe and atmosphere, we sat on the roof top. Service was good and quick. Pizza was nice, would have loved some more sauce on mine, but enjoyed it nonetheless.
google avatar

Semina B.

Yelp
Went in for a quick bite at the bar and satisfied my hunger more than I expected. The two margarita pizzas my group ordered was devoured in no time. The place was packed and well decorated for Halloween. The playlist was a vibe, and they were showing the Yankees game on TV. Would definitely return to try more of the menu.

Yelp
Porta is overall lively and it can be hard to hear sometimes in main room over the music and loudness. I have been here a few times and the fall menu never disappoints. Yes, that does mean some of their pies are seasonal. Autumn Betty is my go to for the fall menu. You do have to love goat cheese and mushroom for that one but it's delicious! Also their corn pie was yummy! For appetizer, we just got bread and butter which was nicely warm. There options for appetizers are eh and could be changed up. For drinks, I got the white door and red door. Typically I drink white wine or rose but I think I like red door better. The service is overall okay as it depends on where you sit. Sometimes it's busy inside and the waiters don't come around for a while. At night, I think Porta turns into a club.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
The space was really big and is great for a gathering for a friend group! We all enjoyed our pizza, especially the toppings. I had the mushroom pizza which I really enjoyed however I did think there was a bit too much crust. Overall it was good and the service was great!
google avatar

Hector S.

Yelp
Porta is a great spot to get a drink and some pizza if you are in the area. I enjoyed their meatball pizza and their margarita pizza. Although I would have liked the pizza more crispy. Their Bootzin pasta was good as it was their play on spaghetti and meat sauce in my opinion...kinda. Nonetheless, the atmosphere is fun but can be a little loud. At night on the weekends, the space turns into a club. All in all a fun spot with decent food, good drinks, and a place to make memories.
google avatar

Brooke N.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place. The atmosphere is just superb and our waiter is so chill and on top of every thing. However, we waited over half an hour after we ordered for our first of FOUR pizzas. That pizza landed on the table and was gone in a minute, we were starving. Then a few minutes later our waiter gave us a free pizza as a table near us was given our pizzas in error which caused the major delay, which is whatever and I know our waiter was fighting and angry on our behalf. We did get all of the pizzas we ordered in the end but was it worth the wait? That's the question. As for the food, it was okay. I enjoyed the char that the crust had but honestly, there was no wow factor. It was pedestrian. Porta's has a great atmosphere with nothing-to-rave-home-about pizza. Certainly not worth the wait and overall, I don't see myself coming back here.

Yelp
I went to Porta for pizza on a weekday night. The interior is very cozy, with bench style seating. The lighting is cute and dim. The vibes are definitely nice for date night or a fun evening with friends/ family. I loved the food. And service was really friendly and quick!
google avatar

Yelp
This was some of the best pizza I've ever had. The Spring Betty was to d*e for! The ricotta appetizer was good, but needed more bread and for the bread to be crisped. The waitress was knowledgeable and made great suggestions. I would travel back to NJ for The Betty!
google avatar

Nick N.

Yelp
Went with a couple friends and when we got up to the enclosed roof, it was extremely warm with all the heaters running. Our amazing waitress Emily took the initiative to turn off the heater that was above our table, which was much appreciated. We shared a few dishes. We had apps, a couple pizzas, a pasta and the octopus. Everything was great except for the octopus, which I've had a few times, but this time was dry and a bit chewy. I did mention it to Emily and she let her manager know and he promptly came over to apologize and let us know he took it off the bill. It's refreshing to know a restaurant still stands by their work and our server Emily was happy to help in every way! Sorry I didn't take many pictures, I was too hungry :-D

Kimberlie C.

Yelp
Plenty of seating, and a great spot to swing by and be with friends. But, at the given pricepoint and slow service, there may be better options elsewhere. The pasta was great, aldente and woodfire pizza yummy, but the calamari was sad and I'm not sure if Porta's will my top pick in the area.
google avatar

Christine Y.

Yelp
Pizza was too salty the ambiance was really nice though. I think if I came back here, I'd try the mussel apps and something else other than the pizza.
google avatar

Evanna W.

Yelp
Porta in Jersey City Overall 7.1/10 Meatballs(daily rolls) - these were pretty hmmm slightly above average. Slightly too salty but did enjoy the texture of them cause it wasn't like homogenous Homemade ricotta - texture was really nice, flavor very light also which is nice but nothing to really write home about. Pairs well with the meat ball and pizza Pizza (14.5 was it's name) - it was mmmm ok the balance of the sauce cheese and meat and spice were very very average and kinda unbalanced, the crust was pretty good though(really make me think how Cali pizza is now). It's still like above average pizza but nothing tooooo special either Wild boar ragu- now this was AMAZING the pasta was very well made and the sage sauce was very yummy Portion very small as a entree but good as an accompany. Would come back just for the pizza Tiramisu - pretty yummy, nothing special but deff good, the cream layer was a little thick to the lady fingers but still pretty good

Yelp
Had a late lunch today and unfortunately it was pretty disappointing. I am a long time customer, since the beginning... I know it's had to maintain consistent standards but ... Ordered my usual Three Trees salad: it came out first- an obscenely large amount of salad (I get this all the time and believe me this was double the usual) but it was almost all arugula, very little radicchio and basically no endive. As for the almonds and pancetta next to nill also. and completely overdressed! Next came the meatball pizza. looked smaller and messier than usual and very under cooked / soggy. And finally the arancini we ordered, expecting first came out last. rice balls basically room temp with slightly warmer sauce. Which was on the side in a tiny bowl ... the whole meal was a miss and pretty bland.
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
I've been to Porta with groups big, small, and even on my own. The food is just so good. All the pasta dishes are amazing. I know they're known for their pizza, which is great, but the pasta--and especially the ricotta and meatballs--are top-tier. They also have my favorite drinks in the area. All the "door" drinks are amazing, especially the White Door. I could drink like 10 of those, and on weekdays during happy hour, it would even be very reasonably priced! It's a really great place--and actually huge inside. In the summer, I love sitting on the roof.
google avatar

Dawn S.

Yelp
I wouldn't come here there seems to be a new manager, I assume he's a nice guy, but all he does is bring his friends and family in and ignores everybody else. I was sitting at the bar for quite a while and I am going to assume his girlfriend showed up I don't know and then moved me for his and his girlfriend's convenience as well as sending his friends shots etc all the things around everybody else sitting at the bar. I went without many times all night having to flag someone down because they were too busy with their friend. It seems to be one of those situations where you are not special unless you know the manager, and I was left with a very bad taste in my mouth. As a black woman client and customer looking at a black man who is a manager I am very disappointed.
google avatar

Lynette B.

Yelp
Stopped by for brunch and tried their pizza and a pasta and loved it all. The $5 mimosas were also a good deal. The place was spacious and the service was great. Would like to try more of their pizzas soon. Oh and their lemon ricotta pancakes were good.
google avatar

Wayne G.

Yelp
Having had a great meal the first time was in the neighborhood do was anxious to try again. What a big mistake! First time calamari was done to perfection , This time YUCK! More like refried from the previous day -greasy and overcooked. Ordered a pizza recommended by the server and it was a good choice. Porta food probably best after you've had more than a few drinks. Definitely not worth it if you're looking for great pizza
google avatar

Yelp
I was so excited to try Porta but left SO disappointed! My sister was visiting so we took her to Porta. We didn't have a reservation and they only had seating downstairs or on the rooftop. The rooftop only had a select menu we opted for the lower level. The lower level did not have the fun atmosphere as the main level. It felt very secluded but since we didn't make a reservation that's on us. We started with 2 cocktails (white door and blue crush) and a beer and the meatball appetizer. Cocktails were ok. The meatball appetizer was really good but came out barely warm. My sister had the spring Betty pizza, my boyfriend had 14 1/2 pizza and I had denoma pasta (double portion). One pizza came out first then 5 minutes later the other one came out and then another 5 minutes later my pasta came out. These were individual meals so I wish they came out at the same time. My pasta was SO bad. The noodles were very soft and very wet and the sauce did not stick to them. There was barely any sausage in it. The double portion is not worth $28. I had to ask for Parmesan and chili flakes to season it. My sister and boyfriend agreed that the pasta was not restaurant quality. They're pizzas we're good but, nothing special. Our sever was nice but service was very slow. We wanted to order more drinks but our server didn't check on us and ask if we wanted more. After we asked for the check we had to wait close to 15 minutes to get it. I had higher hopes for Porta since it's always so popular but I can't see myself coming back.
google avatar

M P.

Yelp
This is the worst pizza I've had in Jersey City. Like I don't know how this can be so flat and flavorless but man...learn something new everyday. Service wise coming here during a busy time is the worst idea. So don't do that to yourself. The enegry and vibe of the place is giving college hangout for adults and the drinks are not that great. The cocktail recipes need a hug.
google avatar

Ellen C.

Yelp
Love this place. Anywhere I can bring ntdig and get good pizza and a glass of wine is 10/10
google avatar

Chithra V.

Yelp
Great ambience. Have been here many times and have zero complaints. Their cocktails are good though the options are a very few. Margaritas especially were amazing. Their pizzas are medium sized and are big slizes. Love the pesto one. Service is quicker too. Great chill out spot in Grove street
google avatar

George B.

Yelp
$18 for the Love and Mercy pizza. It's supposed to have Italian sausage, braised pork shoulder, meatballs, and etc . I would say I probably got one piece of meat that tasted like it's a sausage. Rest of the Pizza was margherita style. Just tomato sauce . This was definitely a rip off .
google avatar

Andrew M.

Yelp
Absolute crap. This is the 2nd time I've been there and the staff has forgotten about our order. Also, it's the 2nd time they've given us disgusting pizza. Mine and my friend's sloppy ass pizzas were so salty and burnt. Pizza should not be salty. What is that? The staff came up to apologize and then forgot about us again. They also gave our pregnant friend her requested mocktail and it had more booze than mine. They should be ashamed Yea, grossest pizza I've ever had
google avatar

Janette H.

Yelp
Large pub located right in front of the grove street station. Very spacious that any group could easily find the table. Food was okay, a bit salty for my taste but overall freshly baked right from the oven. (My favorite was a corn pizza!) They also have live music playing on Friday+weekend nights. Great local spot!

Idania B.

Yelp
I came with my husband here! First of all host was rude and we just wanted to seat at that bar (we did) Bartenders also rude Runner was distracted We order a garlic and oil pasta it was delicious But pizza was really bad We notice that some staff of porta sat at that bar and start having drinks How can managers allow this? That is the reason why they give poor service!
google avatar

Sheena P.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night and loved how festive both Grove street and the interior were. The inside is huge, had multiple Christmas trees and would be great for groups. We were seated promptly but felt rushed my our waiter. My friend and I also had to share our table as the restaurant got more crowded. We ordered: - Snawzeech pizza 4/5 - vegan, couldn't tell it was vegan, pretty flavorful - Chippy pizza 4.5/5 - very good! Very garlicky, didn't miss the red sauce - Mezcal Margarita 3.5/5 - okay - Cold snap 3/5 - watered down Moscow mule Overall food was good, drinks and service were okay.
google avatar

Vicky L.

Yelp
Great spot for big groups, families! I love their pizza and their ricotta! They have a rooftop that's really nice for drinks. The only thing I don't love is that sometimes the service is really slow.
google avatar

David E.

Yelp
So a series of unfortunate events brought you here. I understand: we all have families, they often want to go out, and they often have poor taste, so you get roped into dinner at the mediocre three story Italian place du jour. I'm here to tell you, short of hari-kari, how to have the best experience possible at this place. 1. Get the acorn squash (really the only thing worth having. This includes pizza, pasta, and mozzarella). 2. Mix beer and liquor. 3. Pay your check. 4. Stagger out. You're welcome .
google avatar

Tyler A.

Yelp
Ah, this place. I have never been so fooled. Entered the place with the promise of masterfully-done pizza and good drinks surrounded by an atmosphere of class. What I got was an abysmally long wait for my food, the realization that (when finally obtained) the pizza was sub-par, and being surrounded by folks who clearly had too much to drink. Wanted to love it, didn't even like it. A frat party masquerading as a nicer establishment. I'll pass on trying it again.
google avatar

P D.

Yelp
Enjoyed what we tried here. We made rooftop reservations and enjoyed a bottle of wine with a margarita pizza. The rooftop is nice with great music playing. However the food menu is limited up there and wish we had known that before. The pizza was good, nice charring on the crust that's also has a hint of salt. The sauce was simple, tangy and fresh tasting. The whole thing did get bit soggy but no big complaint. We had to move back downstairs for the full menu and ordered the corn risotto and orchiettte pasta (without the sausage). The risotto was unique with a corn purée and fennel on top but desperately needed salt and some other spices/herbs. The pasta was great, al dente and spicy and my favorite thing!!!...served hot! Service was good and the restaurant looks good. I'd come back.

Yelp
When you want good pizza with good vibes and lots of wine and plenty of space, you go to Porta. When I lived in Hoboken, I still found my way to Porta in JC pretty often. Grove Street is just one of my favorite places to be, especially this little promenade. My most recent trip to porta was right before Christmas and I left full on pizza, red wine and also left lugging a Christmas tree. YEP. An actual normal sized, lovely Christmas tree. They do a promotion around the holidays where you can get two margarita pies, a carafe of wine and a Christmas tree for $60. If you are wondering what the catch is, there really isn't one. The pizza was wonderful and delicious and cheesy, the house wine was super good and my tree was perfect. I have many pictures to prove it. Follow them on Insta if you want to be in the loop for next year. But don't wait for the tree deal to go to Porta of course!!! Get lots of apps and pasta and pizza and enjoy.

Shawn E.

Yelp
food is good and service is good - definitely worth it and will return to Porta in Montclair

Adil ..

Yelp
Host was rude and did not have any information about the menu. Server was nice but he messed up our orders. Table was sticky, pizza was way overcooked (almost like a cracker lol). Beers are the only reason this review is not getting a 1 star.
google avatar

Jillian S.

Yelp
The pizza and rooftop dining was good. Because we sat on the roof deck, there was a limited menu (which we knew beforehand). We got the corn pizza, vegan tomato pie, the summer heirloom tomato pizza, and the Bibb salad. Our favorite was by far the heirloom tomato pizza. The tomatoes were in season, and the goat cheese added good flavor. The other two pizzas didn't blow us away- the corn pizza did not have much corn given the name, and the vegan pie was a little too salty/garlicky to really enjoy. The Bibb salad was a perfect addition to our meal. The Gorgonzola and apricot dressing was a great combination. Overall if we are looking for outdoor dining, along with an elevated pizza place, we'd come back!r
google avatar

Yelp
First time trying Porta was a couple years ago. They still have great pizza but I miss the bone marrow they had on the menu- it was AMAZING! Hope they bring that back.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday night with a friend for some drinks and pizza- as usual this place was jampacked and it had a one and a half hour wait so we decided to bar hop around the area and come back in 1 1/2 hour when they messaged us . Came back we got a couple of drinks again and the margarita pizza and the duck meat pizza . Sadly we did not enjoy either of the pizzas , we have had much better tasting pizzas in Jersey City and here the pizzas were basically dry and the drinks were OK .. Heard their meatball pizza is pretty famous maybe we should try that some other time - don't understand why this is such a famous spot if the food is average Just pizza and pastas on the menu .. there are many other better pizza choices in the grove st area .. However this place has a good vibe and great ambience and the service was pretty decent and quick but be prepared for a long wait ..

Yelp
I had been here before for dinner but had no idea that late night, it basically turns into a dance club. The dance floor had a good number of people but wasn't as crowded as other bars in the area which was nice. The DJ was good and played a mix of old and new hits. Other patrons were friendly.

Yelp
Service was so incredibly slow. I know restaurants are hurting right now and we were more than patient but at a certain point they need to acknowledge it - either stop accepting orders or offer something in the meantime while we wait. Besides the wait, the food was good. Ordered the mushroom pizza and it was a nice size and was good quality.
