Check out the New Flagship Cafe for Portland Roasting Coffee - Eater Portland

"21-year-old coffee company Portland Roasting is getting bigger in February, as it prepares to open a flagship cafe on the corner of SE Oak and Sandy, just a few seconds away from its Southeast headquarters. The company has been around since 1996, and has been more focused on selling sustainably-sourced coffee from farmers on the retail side — this will be the company’s first stand-alone coffee shop, in addition to the outlets at Portland Airport, and the smaller cafe that’s part of the main roastery. The bigger new space at 815 SE Oak will allow the coffee company to get more playful than before, says director of retail operations Eva Attia. “We’re kind of using it as an experimental test kitchen to try different ideas about and get creative with different concepts.” The offerings will center around espresso, but Portland Roasting will also get into sodas, and some coffee-based cocktails (and it’ll be open into the mid-evening for optimum coffee/booze consumption) — in short, Attia says it will be fairly broad-ranging. “Good for the coffee enthusiasts as well as somebody who might not be quite as familiar with your traditional coffee drinks.” On the food side, the flagship will go beyond the standard coffee shop pastries and muffins — breakfast should be offered, and Attia notes that the company is planning to get more heavily into food prep on site as time goes on. Oh, and it’s also a shiny space complete with Modbar and some nifty wood countertops: take a look. The new cafe is planning its grand opening for February 9." - Tim Forster

Having recently visited Portland's Coffee Roasters on Southeast Oak Street, I was thoroughly impressed by this charming local cafe. The moment you walk in, you're greeted by an inviting atmosphere that strikes the perfect balance between cozy and spacious. The cafe offers abundant seating arrangements suited for various needs – comfortable couches for casual meetups, well-spaced tables for those looking to spread out with work, and intimate corners perfect for getting lost in a good book. The thoughtful interior design creates distinct zones while maintaining an open, airy feel throughout. Their menu is a testament to quality over quantity. The cream cheese bagels we ordered were exceptional – perfectly toasted with a generous layer of creamy spread. What truly stood out, however, were their beverages. The hot chocolate struck an ideal balance between rich and sweet, clearly made with high-quality chocolate rather than a powdered mix. The iced mocha was equally impressive, with a robust coffee flavor complemented by just the right amount of chocolate. Beyond the core offerings, Portland's Coffee Roasters boasts an impressive selection of snacks, from locally-sourced pastries to healthier options, accommodating various dietary preferences. What elevates this establishment above many competitors is the seamless blend of excellent product quality and thoughtful ambiance. The background music maintains a pleasant volume that encourages conversation without requiring raised voices. For those seeking a reliable spot to connect with friends, tackle a work project, or simply enjoy a moment of solitude with quality refreshments, Portland's Coffee Roasters on Southeast Oak Street delivers on all fronts. It embodies what a neighborhood café should be – a versatile space serving exceptional products with genuine care for the customer experience.

Google
So beautiful and such nature-y decor! Loved my barista Riley, she made the best matcha I’ve ever had and such a buss vanilla latte. I will definitely be coming back🥰

Google
It's a very Chic place. Very welcoming, lots of windows and lighting yet feels homey and cozy. As always this roaster does a good job with their roasting and the coffee speaks to this. A really good selection of bakery items and sandwiches.

Google
Good peppermint mocha and cappuccino here. Friendly service. Comfortable seating for reading a good book while staying warm inside. Warm interior design vibe. Plenty of people on laptops working.

Google
I didn’t get a cool shot of the sign because Google confused me a bit, but later I realized that the shot and roastary just take up a lot of space, and Google initially led me to the wrong entrance. My late was great and the barista walked me through a few things with the options. Overall a very pleasant experience and a nice, chill afternoon treat.

Google
I’m developing a new habit of going out of my way to get my lattes here. Always smooth and tasty! Their plant based breakfast sandwich hits the spot for me. Highly recommend this shop!

Google
Delicious decaf, more on the lighter roast side but still a treat! Prices are fair and service is friendly; love the openness of the space too!

Google
Not a bad looking place, inside is nice has good music however I was here for an order to pick up, waited about 15 mins for the order, and finally went up to ask to see if it was done yet, the girl had forgot about it, and said oh yeah here it is. While it sat on the counter getting cold. I will say please pay more attention to delivery orders, I have to drive this order to camas and I don't need it getting cold when I get there

Yelp
Clean, quiet, solid drinks. This would be a great place to come and work remote! Plenty of seating areas with free WiFi.

Yelp
einstein's bagel adjacent shop in quality, vibe, etc. barista poured me half a cup of light roast, ran out, tops the rest in dark roast. that's fine, but no free refills.. it's 2025 y'all. i'm drinking out of a ceramic mug at the shop. let's get these free refills going: of light roast.

Yelp
Was really glad this coffee shop opened early before my meeting. Oregon has great coffee everywhere but Portland Coffee Roasters was outstanding! Highly recommend their lattes. The ambiance is calming, modern, but also incorporated some nature vibes. It'd be a great place to cozy up with a book on a rainy day :) The staff were so nice and welcoming especially so early in the morning.

Yelp
Outa town coffee snob. Have never been let down when I visit. Baristas are always helpful in answering questions about what's on menu.
google avatar

Wendy C.

Yelp
Coffee was delish! I enjoyed all the extra items minus the pumpkin scone ... it tasted and smelled odd. Not your usual scone texture, more like a muffin.
google avatar

Del K.

Yelp
I stopped in here a few weeks ago for a meet-and-greet with my new team. The drink options were plentiful, and there were several bite options. The staff was generally really friendly. The space was ample, with plenty of seating options. The hours were ideal.

Yelp
I'm really trying to get over my sweet tooth. It's not going well. Portland Coffee Roasters has sensational options for morning treats. The baked goods are so inspiring, that I am wasting moments of my life to explain the verocity of their impact. For one, there's the flaky marionberry-filled croissant that oozes into your mouth like a kid eating out of a waffle cone on a humid summer afternoon. Likewise, the marionberry muffin is so light and soft; it's almost like angel food cake but with a gooey, fruity center. I must also point out PCR's savory side. The recent addition of a turkey sandwich cannot be forgotten. It's only got a few ingredients, but that thousand island-like sauce mixed with the lean turkey in that ever-so-slightly-burnt bun? Lawd. PLEASE DON'T GET RID OF THESE ITEMS! Actually, I'm moving in a few months so who cares. But wow, you guys, A+ for food. I don't even know what the coffee tastes like, but it doesn't matter.
google avatar

Yelp
I can't speak on behalf of the ambiance or the service but I can speak on the quality. 10/10 for DoorDash and the driver going to another location before arriving it was AMAZING will get coffee here again will I'm in town this is an iced coffee with raspberry and white mocha and 2 shot added with whip! I do value they're open earlier than others
google avatar

Jeff C.

Yelp
Nicely brewed cup of coffee! The flavor was a bit brighter than I prefer, but that's just due to the blend of beans that were used. Seating areas were also very comfortable and welcoming.
google avatar

Annette B.

Yelp
I was attending a conference nearby and needed a caffeine fix. While the drinks and food items are great here (I had some lattes and a bagel during my time here), there are also lots of souvenirs and to-go items available for purchase.
google avatar

Steph S.

Yelp
Running through the airport and needed a latte, great roasting! Flavors is great and staff is super friendly. We will def be back. And they do latte art, which I didn't see until I took the lid off, but I appreciate it

Yelp
So much more than coffee. And The coffee is really, really good! Having made weekly trips through Portland Airport for two decades, I am very familiar with and have drank my fair share of Portland Coffee Roasters coffee. But what puzzles me the most is that I drive by their coffee shop and cafe on the corner of SE Oak & Sandy most everyday and have never once stopped in. Until today. The sign in the window advertising a cold cardamom brew caught my attention after an hour outdoor swim in 95 degrees. Truth be told, I never stopped in previously because I pass on the way to the gym after already having coffee at home. But now that I have tasted this smooth chocolatey coffee with hints of cardamon, I will definitely stopping here after the gym! It may be a seasonal drink so I'm going to have to get my fix while I can! Inside is super cool. Never would I have guessed such an oasis was behind the doors. Lots of natural wood - and a small divider wall of thin birch trees - plus lots of windows and light give creates a warm and inviting vibe Even though they are on a busy intersection in an industrial part of town. Many delicious pastries - my weakness - and I understand that in the morning they even have breakfast sandwiches. The barista was very friendly. The entire experience was positive and neighborly, the way Portland used to be. If you are driving past, don't wait as long as I did to park and go in! Parking on SE Oak is best. After you have their delicious coffee, I'm sure you will seek them out at PDX where they have several outposts. They sell bags of coffee, many named after local Portland neighborhoods: Goose Hollow, St. John's, Hawthorne, Tilikum Crossing. Fun!

Yelp
I am a new fan of Portland Coffee Roasters! I tried their coffee for the first time while visiting the area. I ordered a hot mocha with oat milk. I loved the chocolate mocha flavor and appreciated that it was not overly sweet. I love a mocha that still has a strong coffee flavor, which is what the mocha from Portland Coffee Roasters tasted like. The inside of the coffee ship was really cute with birch trees and lots of greenery. Portland Coffee Roasters has a great loyalty program that makes it easy to get free coffee! I am looking forward to my next Portland Coffee Roasters experience when I am visiting again!

Jeremy E.

Yelp
The staff were very friendly, the environment was clean, and the food & coffee were delicious.
google avatar

Jake W.

Yelp
Very slow service and the coffee taste burnt. I like the vibe inside but would not come back.
google avatar

Eva G.

Yelp
I was actually impressed with this coffee place at the PDX airport. A great change from the usual Starbucks.
google avatar

Erin L.

Yelp
Great baristas who are always friendly. The coffee and flavoring are consistent across all locations but much higher quality than other local chains. They also have the standard milk alternative options. The food is also high quality for quick and simple items. The location in Buckman has decent parking and lots of table space inside. Quite work spot but always a couple others in there too. Recommend: oatmilk vanilla or hazelnut latte, blueberry muffin, bacon omelette breakfast sandwich.
google avatar

Art C.

Yelp
For a city that does coffee so well, this one did stand out a bit. Excellent... just a perfectly made cappuccino.
google avatar

Clarissa T.

Yelp
The shaken cardamom cold brew is so good! Staff and friendly and open to giving recommendations. A nice place to sit and chill
google avatar

Sybonei G.

Yelp
Decided to try this place out since I've been wfh and it's a short walk from my place. The aesthetic is okay, clean, and the baristas were friendly. The reason I'm giving it 3 stars is because my iced americano with almond milk was quite disappointing. Now please know, I'm no coffee snob but I could tell something was off from the moment they called out my order. It looked watered down. I took my first sip and *sigh* not the joyful feeling I get from good coffee first thing in the morning. So I decided to walk over to another shop. Sometimes days are long and life is too short for weak coffee.
google avatar

Ploy N.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the Goose Hollow ground! Super smooth and chocolaty. The Veggie Sausage Pastie was a tad bit dry but the crust is nice and buttery.
google avatar

Alyse H.

Yelp
Whenever I fly into PDX, I make sure I get myself a delicious Americano from Portland Roasting Co, so when I was here on vacation, I made it a point to stop by at least once. I think their espresso very tasty. I also ordered a blueberry danish that perfectly complimented my coffee. Our visit was right before everything was closed for Covid, so it was very quiet and mellow inside. The barista was super friendly and there was ample seating. They also make pods of their beans that fit into the Nespresso machine, in case you were wondering ;)

John D.

Yelp
I got the meadow latte and it was pretty good. Ambiance is nice and you can work inside. The location is not ideal though
google avatar

Aimee P.

Yelp
Cute spot. Came in on a random Tuesday to sit and try to get some stuff done. Never done the whole bring your work/school to cafe thing, I must say-it's a nice change of scenery and not to distracting. The ambience is totally chill and lax. There are meetings with groups, groups playing card games, solo laptop goers. The layout is great, lots of available, comfortable sitting areas. Coffee is great. Baked good is great. Staff is top notch. I wouldn't hesistate to go out of my way to sit, sip and get some work done.
google avatar

TJ S.

Yelp
You really can't beat the freshness of the coffee served here. The coffee beans comes directly from the roasting facility next door. The variety of the coffee and coffee drinks are plentiful, and the pastries and foods to accompany these excellent coffee are plentiful also. So many choices and can be a bit overwhelming, but it is great for anyone coming here with a group. I really like the relaxing and open atmosphere, albeit set in an industrial and commercial section.
google avatar

Shawn S.

Yelp
OAK STREET LOCATION- Went to Portland roasting for the first time (step out of current coffee zone) and had an INCREDIBLE cup Iced Latte that was clearly made with love and care. Not by a machine, real people that care! Def recommend grabbing coffee and hanging out to get some work done!
google avatar

Elsa C.

Yelp
We walked by this place as it started to rain so we decided to give it a try. The place is right across from Basecamp Brewery with plenty of street parking. As usual, the hubs and I ordered one cappuccino to use as a taste test. The cashier was quick and friendly and the barista called out names correctly when the drink is ready. A cappuccino sets one back $3.50 for what looks like 10oz cup. The roast is kind of lacking complexity and the milk shines more than the espresso. The space is large and airy, with a section available for special events rental. Washroom is unisex. I wish they have a hook for ladies who needs to hook their purse/jacket.

Yelp
The drinks are always great, the pastries yummy, and the staff are always really nice! Would recommend if you're ever in the area!

Yelp
First time going to a Portland Coffee Roasters and the experience was pretty bad. I can tell it was busy with online orders from the moment I walked in but no one was in line but not to have ANYONE, even say anything to me while I waited just blown my mind!! All I wanted was a small black coffee and I just stood there like an idiot and waited just to see if someone even looks at me lol. Even after one of the workers made eye contact and greeted me, they still didn't ask me if I needed help, been helped or even here for a pick up! They just smiled and went back to ignoring me. Granted, I was waiting in the pick up area on accident, but to not have anyone at least ask me "are you here for a pick up" just blown my mind! At one point I thought I was invisible lol. Talk about being ignored for a first impression. I eventually got my coffee and it leaked all over me while I drove because the lid is not sealed like Starbucks lids. Crazy part is...the coffee is amazing!

Renee J.

Yelp
Service was bad, the guy that waited on me was Rude. You know when a person is trying to sound sweet but you know when they are being Rude. Not a good look
google avatar

Yelp
Chill spacious spot to get some reading/work done while drinking tea/coffee! Would recommend.

Yelp
Fantastic and friendly service from the staff. We were here to start our coffee tour with Third Wave Coffee. We arrived straight from the airport and were famished. We ordered their vegan breakfast sandwich, the hashbrown sandwich, vegan chocolate chip cookie, and their nitro cold-brewed chai. Although the staff was amazing, the facility was clean, and we even saw had a demonstration from the barista of their Endless Summer light roast pour-over, an origin from Ethiopia and Costa Rica; the reason I did not give it five stars was due to the food lacking in taste. The sandwiches were pre-made and only heated in the microwave. The Breakfast sandwich was more biscuit than anything. The vegan cookie was more sugar than taste. Other than that, a beautiful place serving good coffee. Definitely do try the nitro cold-brewed chai. That was unique for us to try as we've never been to a coffee shop that offers cold-brewed chai.
google avatar

Dany R.

Yelp
Great vibes, great coffee selections. They also have an event space, booze, and small bites.
google avatar

Yelp
In a coffee shop heaven of PDX, this spot has quickly become one of my faves. Easy street parking and easy to get to. There is plenty of seating and an inviting, chill atmosphere. The WiFi is quick and free. The coffee is fresh and delicious. I'd especially like to give note to the nitro cold brew. It's creamy, cold, caffeinated goodness. I'll be back and back. Hope to see you there!
google avatar

Yelp
They've handled the pandemic like champs. Super friendly staff. Wide variety of treats for special diets and tasty tasty drinks.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolute WORST coffee shop I've ever been too! Make sure to stay away! The customer service is absolutely terrible and employees have a very bad attitude. Food was also disgusting and uncooked. I got food poisoning. STAY AWAY
google avatar

Yelp
Quintessential Portland. Specialty coffee shop by day (cascara cocktails - coffee bean extract) Coffee cocktail bar by night. Great large event space in the back. Open mic nights. Great big windows that let the sunshine in the summer and keep that Portland rain out the rest of the year. Portafilter lights above the bar. Unique wooden lights and Live wood bar. Cool accent wall from tree stumps giving that outdoorsy look everyone here loves so much. Lots of wood accents throughout giving it that PNWesque vibe. Bring your Schwood glasses and Pendleton flannel and you'll fit right in.

M J.

Yelp
Amazing coffee and wonderful staff. Bring your own cup and get a discount on top of their very reasonable prices.
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered the Bart bar and Carm Frapp. Both heavenly. The bar was so smooth creamy and perfectly balanced. The frapp was more milk shake like rather than like an icy, I seriously enjoyed. Caio. Xx

Yelp
The old Portland Roasting location cafe (just a block to the west) was a little hidden spot, and one that I felt like I was intruding at when I was there since it was so quiet. This new spot at the corner of SE Sandy and Oak is a completely different feel. It's large, with lots of natural light, and has plenty of seating. Even though their grand opening isn't till next weekend, there were already a half dozen folks in the space, a few on their laptops, etc. The large amount of natural light is a nice contrast to their previous space which felt a bit basement like due to high, narrow windows. The counter is towards the back of the space, and off to the side they've got some shelving with a little bit of retail - some beans, branded HydroFlasks, etc. Convenient for me since I'd recently run out of Chemex filters, so I was able to grab a box. Americano I got to go in my HydroFlask was tasty as expected.

Yelp
This is for the small percentage of people who want to come here to work on your new website. Don't do it! You can't. And by the time you buy your coffee, sit down, and open your laptop to work, you will have found out that you can't. And you'll be a few dollars out of pocket for the lesson. Portland Roasting has a firewall to block those wanting to use their wifi for illegal downloads. It is very successful. Trust me, I tried all the proxies I could. This is not a review about their coffee. Honestly, it all tasted bad after this experience, so I'm negatively biased. This is just a warning to all you young entrepreneurs who want to come here. Don't! Go to Starbucks, at least you can spend your money and know you'll be able to use the internet.
google avatar

Lee F.

Yelp
Great coffee. They roast their own beans, very knowledgeable and are willing to meet your caffeine needs.
google avatar

Timothy S.

Yelp
You will not find your typical Starbucks mixed coffee drinks here. This is a coffee shop for the coffee purists with a straight menu of pour overs, espresso, and a few rotating specialty drinks. If you like coffee with flavor, made by hand with precision you will enjoy Portland Roasting Coffee! The baristas are all very good at what they do... This is a great place to get some work done too! The internet is fast and the environment is is conducive to working on your laptop. My office is just around the corner and I often visit when I need a caffeine bust.

Haifa B.

Yelp
Favorite coffee joint. I always tell people about this place. When ever they are open at the airport, I get a pick me up.

Yelp
One of the few coffee shops I found open late. Great staff! Love to come here and read a book before heading to yoga!

Yelp
I always order online and pick up within 5 min of placing my order. Great service & coffee! Our usual spot when in town visiting from Seattle

Yelp
The best coffee in Oregon! The first time I came to Oregon, I had this coffee in my hotel room in Ashland. I spent a year craving it until I finally moved to here! I tell everyone to go here not to ST... and most people already agree or do after trying it. My only complaint is that they don't have more locations! This storefront is gorgeous. Clean, beautiful aesthetic, spacious, and calm. They play a great mix of music that isn't distracting if you're trying to talk or work. The staff has always been so friendly- not pretentious or judgmental if you have questions or want to try something new. They've got an excellent variety of delicious gluten free pastries. I'm also a sucker for the art on the cups. If you purchase beans, they are happy to grind them to your preference. If you haven't stopped here you must!
google avatar

Rock G.

Yelp
Amazing coffee! It was smooth, crisp, & fresh. We were hooked! The entire visit in Portland we sought out Portland Roasting Coffee spots.
google avatar

Dani T.

Yelp
Best tasting coffee in Portland! They have a lot of great blends as well. The Columbia drip is spot on. Mt. Tabor espresso is also great. I don't think you will be disappointed in whatever you choose though.
