Family‑owned on Highway 58, Portobello’s is a sleeper pick for big New York‑style pies, baked pastas, and BYO wine. Loved by neighborhood regulars and verified current by its official site, it’s a smart stop east of downtown.

I am being VERY fair on my review, simply because the linguine and clam sauce (has not got me sick yet) -- The service was TERRIBLE -- She gave me the check before I was even done eating and didn't ask if I wanted anything else -- the place was empty. I was talking to the owner when I left -- he seems quite arrogant for an empty restaurant. it may be good? but bad service? kills it for me. I will also add, they put lemon in the clam sauce -- you may ask how do I know? I had to pull out 3 lemon pits (Not very good chef/cooking) -- next person who breaks a tooth will sue the place and own it. I likely will not be back unless the owner would like to treat me to a proper meal.

Let me tell you this! I absolutely LOVE Portobello’s! Everything is always very fresh and delicious. I could not even imagine that I would enjoy meals so much and always look forward to going back! The first time I ordered food, I got the whole Philly Cheese Steak to go. Their wrapping technique kept my sandwich hot and very tasty until I got home to eat it (I don’t like cold food and figured I would have to warm it up)! I had planned to only eat half of it and save the other half for another meal. I couldn’t help myself. I ate all of it! I went back the next week and ordered the shrimp scampi and a large pizza to go. All I can say is wow! I cleaned my plate! They don’t skimp on the large shrimp (I cut each shrimp into three pieces)! The sauce was incredibly tasty, and included both red and yellow tomatoes, a salad, and fresh bread with butter. My to-go pizza had the biggest slices of pizza! Absolutely hands-down some of the freshest ingredients you’ll find. The crust was not too thick, and exactly how I like my pizza crust. They also honored my request of light sauce with extra cheese that I forgot to tell them initially with no problem. I put my extra slices in the freezer, and they still had that great fresh taste! I even gave a friend a piece, and was told that it was some of the best pizza they’ve had as well! I have also ordered the philly cheesesteak again to make sure I wasn’t dreaming! It didn’t disappoint me with the same wonderful flavors I love. I’m not the easiest to impress because I come from a long line of cooks with a sibling being an executive chef, too. The restaurant gives me a family-vibe and I talked with a couple of other diners who were enjoying spaghetti and meatballs and a chicken dish (I don’t remember the name of it). They said that they enjoy everything about this place as well! That encouraged me to go outside of what I’ve had so far. Everything was top-notch. The restuarant was “homey”, and the owners were so very kind, friendly, and accommodating. What a great combination: great food and service in a clean and inviting atmosphere for single diners like me, couples, families, and out-of-town guests. In many ways it reminded me of the authentic Italian food that I had in Italy years ago on the Amalfi Coast and especially the mountain village of Ravello. My palette says, you can’t go wrong with Portobello’s!

After reading the last review I thought I should write one, even though I rarely do so. My wife & I have been coming here for years. We’re simple folks, but have lived all over the world and enjoy many types of food in many cultures. We moved to the area 6 yrs ago and found Portobello’s shortly thereafter. We absolutely love the place! It is family owned and authentic Italian. Not pretentious or ostentatious by any measure, which may put the proud off, but it is what has so endeared the place to us. The service has always been personal, friendly, and by the gracious and humble owner. She is very easy going and unobtrusive; very down-to-earth, and like a sister, from all of our experience. We have tried many of their dishes on the menu and have never had a meal that wasn’t amazing. If you want good Italian food in an atmosphere where everyone enjoys the community environment, don’t miss this gem of the Chattanooga area!

Charming place with tasty dishes! We had the zuppa di pesce, eggplant rollini, antipasto and riramisu. Great service, definitely recommend!

Went with a friend who lives near by who had heard good things. We arrived shortly before noon and were the only ones there (party of 3) We were seated and given menus. We were served our requested water and after quite a long wait I went looking for our waitress who was seated on a bench on her phone and looking out into the parking lot. The food was mediocre and a bit overcooked. The wall decor was random but nothing special. For the price point I was not impressed. Would not go out of my way to eat here

Google
"W" Chicken & Shrimp salad! Fries were cooked perfect and my server Maria made sure I was good the entire time. 10/10 recommend!

Google
The service is nice, kind people work here. The food is pretty bland, I had the lasagna and was really disappointed. Frozen from the supermarket would have been better. Their marinara was really watery, sad.

Karen Oliver

Google
Our server was friendly with our large family. Those garlic knots are delicious! Soft, buttery, and served hot and fresh. My salad was crisp and fresh with good quality romaine lettuce. The pizza was huge, hot, fresh and full of meat and veggies. My tiramisu was beautiful but the mascarpone filling was frozen instead of creamy and I really didn't get much of an Expresso taste. Portion size was more than enough so we did a lot of sampling each others entrees. It was a good meal and we will be back again.

Laurie D.

Yelp
Great food, big portions, delicious garlic knots. Good customer service. Did a great job for 30 of us-stellar performance. Great lasagna, spaghetti, pizza, eggplant rollini (sp?) and eggplant parm.

Yelp
Just went back to Portobello's and it was once again great I got the same thing being a meatball sub and it was again great additional I tried there Alfredo and it was incredible still and easy 5/5 stars would recommend Visited 12/5/24

Holly R.

Yelp
Overpriced average pizza. I was expecting really flavorful, but found it to be quite bland, and expensive

Yelp
I've been here a half dozen times. I've gotten the calzone each time. Eat half, take half home and eat it next day as leftovers. It's huge. It's delicious. It's STUFFED with toppings. Their speed of service could be better but overall, great spot tucked away in Harrison.

Tom M.

Yelp
Great place the food is great I have not found anything on their menu that isn't good. The service is always fast and friendly

Stephen R.

Yelp
Simply the best New York pizza place in our region - this coming from a pizza bigot. Growing up in Brooklyn and Queens, having sampled most local pizza places, nothing comes close. The bread/crust is so very good and the meals (veal parmigiana, sausage, etc...) is wonderful. The service is outstanding and the price is right. On top - it is BYOB!!!

Sarah H.

Yelp
Ordered take out from here and everything was phenomenal! I got the zuppa di vongole and a steak Stromboli. Both were 10/10. I will most definitely be returning and bringing my family here when they're in town!
google avatar

Ethan E.

Yelp
We got lunch to go. It was covered in grease and looked repugnant. The smell of the chicken alone made us queasy. The cheese ravioli was tasteless. I would have rather eaten cold Chef Boyardee from a can.
google avatar

Randall M.

Yelp
It's been years since I've been here & I can't exactly remember what I had, while the meal wasn't terrible...it was very wet. As in it was packed in a puddle of water wet. I've never ordered any Italian dish that(outside of soup at Olive Garden)that was slposhy wet mesh. I keep saying I may give them another try, I just haven't been there again.

Yelp
Been many times and they provide very good food and plenty of it. Surprised by the large size you get when ordering a small pizza. Come hungry my friends.

Charlie R.

Yelp
Great to have a local pizzeria in the area but it's overpriced. The staff is adequate but not friendly and dining room old/dusty. Meat-stuffed pizza is pretty good but too greasy. I stopped going when I ordered (w/o looking at price) 12 small garlic knots for $10. The dough/crust is good when fresh but tastes frozen sometimes.
google avatar

Lori P.

Yelp
Service was mediocre but the food was worth it! I would definitely come back! The portobello pizza was amazing!

Yelp
Just updating my previous review of this establishment. I still stand by my comments about the portions vs cost but I have since come in for pizza only. This is redeemed them in my book. We love the crispy crust and delicious sauce. Thank you for having such great pizza on Hwy 58 where that is impossible to find.

David F.

Yelp
Pizza is good... but heavily overpriced not worth it will not be coming here often. Staff is very nice and friendly

Yelp
I was impressed so that I might have to go back if in area again or even close. It's located off the 153 north on highway 58 east. I got the meatball parmigiana submarine. I got it to go and they packaged perfectly in a round airtight container just fitted the submarine. I was delighted in my first bite. It is the simple truth; it looked so good when I opened it that I forgot to take a picture. I almost inhaled this sandwich without chewing it.

Yelp
I could have sworn that I already reviewed this place. Hmmmm. Curious. I've had pizza here for dine in and take out. I've also dined in and had pasta. I so want this place to be soooo awesome. It's good, just not the greatest. I found the sauce to be a bit too bland for my taste. The bread they serve you is fantastic, though. I could just eat that. This pizza is huge, no doubt. It just isn't my favorite pizza in town. You do get great value for your money and the people are kind. The wait can be a little long, but if they are making their food fresh, I don't mind that. I need to go back soon and try more items again. It's been a bit too long since I was last there.

Yelp
We ordered the chicken carbonara and chicken & shrimp carbonara, along with garlic knots. The food was incredibly good! Service was good! Update! We enjoyed our meal, paid for meal, left a review, and then left. About an hour and a half later (as we are driving toward Gatlinburg) my husband realizes he has left his wallet at the restaurant. We call, they find it, call us back, and then wait for us to drive another hour and a half back to pick it up. Not only was it almost 11:30pm, (and they close at 9!) they returned his wallet with all money and everything else inside. Roberto was the sweet guy that we spoke to and that stayed to make sure we got it back, but he and his family make this restaurant even more significant than good food!! We are so thankful for y'all's kindness and honesty, and willingness to stay so long after closing to help us. Thank you doesn't seem enough! (And, he wouldn't even take a cash thank you!) Great people and truly good food!! Thank you again, Roberto and your sweet family!!!

Yelp
What a find!! Looking for a pizza place in the area and Portobello's did not disappoint! We have eaten here a couple times now and have been quite impressed with the quality and taste. We had pasta dishes one night (Bolognese and Chicken Sorrento) and pizza another (Portobello's Special and one we created). Let me also just say how big the pizzas are!! Excellent value!! We ordered two smalls and they were huge!! Everything was very good! We will definitely be back!

Yelp
This is a hidden gem behind the TVFCU on Highway 58. It's in a strip center attached to a mini storage, no doubt converted from some long lost retailer. Today I had the "medium" pepperoni and mushroom pizza. I used quotation marks because this thing is huge! It's bigger than most large pies around town. I didn't know how big it was, or I would have ordered a small. I usually order the veal saltimbocca which is excellent, but decided on pizza today. The pizza is very good, and did I mention a ton of food? TON OF FOOD! The staff is friendly and helpful. Stop by when your out that way!

Matthew B.

Yelp
We heard great things about this place from a buddy that is from the Northeast. As a former New Englander I was looking for a NY style place in town. This is the closest I've had to the real thing. Great sauce, cheese and pepperoni. On a more personal note, the owner gave us the pizza for free because of of the length of our wait. Completely unnecessary on their part, but very endearing, especially given what's going on in the world. We will be back for sure.

Yelp
Got Valentine's dinner to go for me and my wife. Chicken marsala and chicken pizzaiola with house salads. Excellent! I served the meals on our china once I got home for a nice romantic touch. Photos posted.

Sandra B.

Yelp
The night we ate there my husband ordered a cocktail. They were out of the bourbon he requested same answer with the second and third. Finally he just switched to beer. The salads were delicious. Main course was just "ok". Service was very slow but we'll chalk that up to after effects of Covid. The wait staff seemed very unorganized. While the food wasn't bad, it didn't really wow us. Don't know that we'll ever go back again.

Yelp
Thanks yelp for introducing me to my new go to for pizza in Chattanooga. This is the best pizza I've had in the area. We ate a mid day Sunday meal there today and hit it during their very slow time. The service was prompt and friendly. The small loaf of bread that they brought out was fantastic. The girls and I got the 19" cheese pizza and it reminded me of the NJ pies that I grew up on-excellent! Again,I'll be returning for these for sure. My wife got the pasta primavera and it was really good. Great place here.

Yelp
Incredible experience! We ordered this meal to-go. My husband and I were looking for a locally owned pizza place to fulfill our carb cravings. We may have gone overboard but I'm glad we did. We ordered a jumbo pepperoni pizza, garlic knots, cheese sticks, and side salads. I can't tell you how wonderful this food is. Everything was delicious and cooked perfectly. And though we ordered this to-go, service was impeccable from the moment we placed our order over the phone, to the time we left with our food. This may very well be our new favorite place to get pizza. We come to Chattanooga every autumn and we're already counting down the days til we can come back to Portobello's!

Mendi M.

Yelp
First time coming here. At first walking in was a bit awkward. We felt like we had walked into the kitchen. When the waitress brought our salads she brought one bread stick. We thought maybe that was because we had ordered garlic knots. But once she brought us our entrees she informed us she had forgotten about our garlic knots and asked if we wanted more bread instead so we agreed to more bread, to which she brought one more bread stick to the table. The food was ABSOLUTELY delicious!! When I ordered my to go order I noticed that the kitchen crew was not wearing gloves and touched food with their bare hands and then wiped their hands on their pants, if I had seen that before we wouldn't have ordered. The waitress was more occupied with answering the phone and practically tossed out plates on the table to get to the phone. Our food was $54 not a bad price for good food but I don't know if we will be back.

Andrea T.

Yelp
I was looking for a good cheesesteak and saw it on their menu. I was skeptical because, 1) I'm picky and 2) people sometimes do weird things to a cheesesteak like add cheezewhiz...no offense to those that like cheesewhiz... I went on my lunch break. It was not busy at all. It's not fancy. Plenty of seating. The food going out to the tables looked good but I was determined to try the cheesesteak. So this cheesesteak...it is delicious! I got the small or the 8 inch. And I got mine without mushrooms because, I'm picky. It had just the right amount of onions and peppers. Generous amount of cheese but not too much. Hot toasted bread. I'm definitely a fan and I'm excited to try the garlic bread. It has great reviews also! And the pizza is next. I consider myself a pizza expert so I'll report back. Stay tuned.

Yelp
Attempted to order a Hawaiian style pizza from this restaurant oh where to start. Pizza should have a flavor other than salt I guarantee the pizza sauce they are using comes from a jar it is not fresh in the least nor is it homemade. For the exorbitant price you are paying one would expect it to be at least a decent sauce from a jar however I think it is probably the cheapest stuff they can buy we ordered our pizza with extra cheese will try to post a photo if this is extra cheese I would hate to see regular again they are trying to cut corners it is also not the standard mozzarella cheese rather the cheaper stuff that they can get away with. As for the toppings again with a large pizza total of three toppings costing in the neighborhood of $23 and change one would expect quality ingredients however you can get better ingredients from such notorious places as little Caesars or possibly cici pizza. I have not had the opportunity to try their so called a Italian however with our experience with the pizza I very much doubt that I would be willing to risk it. In my opinion there are some very good reasons why this restaurant has absolutely no one in it on a weekday during dinner time at 7 o'clock in the evening. When I returned the pizza and asked for a refund because the flavor was that bad the owner attempted to argue with me again not something I would expect from someone who runs a business however I doubt this one will stay in business very long. My recommendations for improvement would include use quality ingredients not from a can or jar possibly look at cooking your pizza all the way through so it is not a ball of dough in the middle I would not recommend arguing with the customers it's ours them to write reviews like this in case you were wondering. To wrap it all up I would recommend a little bit of culinary training or maybe just close the doors and start selling shoes you've got a good start with your pizza.

Yelp
First let me say that I am not the kind of person that likes to leave bad reviews. We were looking for a great little Italian place while visiting from out of state. But.. I think people need to know about this place.. We were sadly lead astray by these reviews. The garlic knots everyone raves about seriously lacked in garlic. I had the tortellini in alfredo sauce... the sauce was butter and cream. Looked like a soupy mess on my plate. The sauce lacked in garlic and parmigiana. My husband had lasagna.. this man loves lasagna. I believe he is Garfield! This lasagna he did not enjoy nor did he finish it, which is surprising. The only thing that I enjoyed was my salad and house dressing. The people that work there were super nice. Love that it is a family owned business. And it is a core little place with great music.

Yelp
This is THE best restaurant on Hwy 58. When you walk in it's virtually empty, but that's because most of us are getting take out. However, the hostess greets you the same. Very friendly and professional. The food is cooked fresh. The calamari and wings are EVERYTHING. The garlic knots are phenomenal. Also, they give plenty and cook it so well. There has never been a time that I've had a complaint. I think it's family owned and run. They should be so proud of their restaurant.

Hieu H.

Yelp
I came home with some take out only to find what a rip off it is!!!i paid 18$ for a chicken Tuscano that feeds only a baby! The pizza is the worst pizza I've have ever had in my life!! The fried calamari was 9 dollars and again feeds only a baby!!! If I could give 0 stars I would!! Do not waste your time n money!! Trust me!!!

Yvonne H.

Yelp
We love love love this place! Maria is awesome! My family and I eat there weekly. Food is amazing!
google avatar

Rosie D.

Yelp
Hands down the best pizza in town! Their pies are huge and never disappoint. The owners are extremely nice and welcoming.

Pam B.

Yelp
Disappointed this eve. Be sure to check your carry out order. Ordered fettuccini got spaghetti, blue cheese dressing got ranch, tiramisu got cheese cake. Didn't realize until got home and opened things up. Will be sure to check next time.
google avatar

Jeffrey M.

Yelp
I am a little disappointed Portobello's Italian Restaurant & Pizzaria. They have the delivery service marked as YES but when you call then go through your order and find out at the end they do not deliver, it's disappointing. I hope they will be able to fix mixup. I was looking forward to having some Italian cuisine tonight after a long day.
google avatar

Keith G.

Yelp
This is a tiny place...the type I love to find. I have ordered pizzas for take out, and also eaten at the restaurant. Each time the food was hot, delicious, and scratch made. I don't think you could be disappointed by anything on the menu. You'll have to look hard to find the place, but you'll be glad you did!!
google avatar

Matt M.

Yelp
This place is the bombdiggitty. BEST Italian ever! Fresh food, nice people, and insane taste with explosion on every bite.
google avatar

Tono M.

Yelp
I heard this place had really good pizza so today was the day to confirm or deny this claim. The restaurant is in an unattractive plaza on a rather unattractive stretch of 58 (cash shops, pawn, etc.). I knew this was the case before I ventured over so I wasn't fazed. The interior was pretty basic, wholesale restaurant booths, tables, and chairs. There was some Italian land and city themed art prints on the wall (add a little atmosphere). We were seated right away. There was one server managing the whole place and she was rather on top of things. The bread that was brought out was delicious and tasted very fresh. We ordered the small (15 inch) pepperoni and mushroom pizza. The largest small I've ever seen. The pizza was very tasty, fresh, and a crispy thin crust. The sauce was just right and had the right amount of cheese. If you can get past the exterior and plain interior the food and service is great.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
Some of the better pizza around. Sure its off Hwy 58, tucked next to a storage place, but nice folks and nice food. Now have had the stuffed pizza 3 times. Boy it's a lot. Ate for days. Also have he their calzones. Good stuff. Recommended and not bad pricing.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Definitely add this Resturant to your must eat places. Had their clams in white wine sauce. The last time I had as good was in Venice, Excellent! My wife had the eggplant parmesan. Well worth the 15 ride from or motels on 75.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
The pizza is pretty good! My wife says it's the closest to New York pizza she's had since living here. The Marsala is average nothing to great, the Zuppa Di Pesce was pretty amazing for side of the hwy joint.
google avatar

Stephen R.

Yelp
The only reason it is not a 5 is due to only tasting the pizza - we are awaiting another visit to try some of the other meals. As a former (never a former) New Yorker - Italian food is an essential element of my life, as well Deli. Coming to the Chattanooga area, it was thought we would have to travel back to the city - but this nice surprise was local. We had a large pizza, which had a great crust, the sauce was very good and cooked just right. Looking forward to coming back for some entrees and dessert.
google avatar

Teena M.

Yelp
Great Stromboli and delicious pasta primavera. Had a small antipasti salad that would feed two people. More people need to try this little hidden gem on highway 58.
google avatar

Joshua M.

Yelp
Great New York style thin crust pizza, tasty beads, friendly service. Clean space and restrooms.
google avatar

Lindsey E.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! Quick service, reasonable prices, family owned. A real gem in an area where there's pretty much only fast food available.

Wendy N.

Yelp
After driving past this hidden gem for an entire year (restaurant is in a location that cannot be seen from road), my husband and I decided to try tonight. What a delight! We had the place to ourselves, but people were starting to come in as we were leaving. The restaurant is super clean, with friendly staff and fantastic authentic Italian food. A small loaf of freshly baked bread was brought to the table, and the salads were fresh and tasty. We split a fried calamari appetizer, which was very fresh and tender--not greasy. The Tortellini Alfredo and Lobster Ravioli with Pink Sauce were excellent. We topped the meal off with the tiramisu for dessert. I highly recommend this restaurant!
google avatar

Kevin A.

Yelp
Eat here at least once a month. Everything I've had is delicious and the people are friendly and genuine. My favorite Italian this side of the river. My othe favorite is Bibas in hixson.

Jaclyn A.

Yelp
Horrible experience Garlic knots are great but the service is horrible. Owner/waitress/manager? Needs training! She is very rude.
google avatar

Brett F.

Yelp
I love Italian food. While I want to love Portobello's it just leaves me wanting more. Their red sauce is bland, making their pizza mediocre. I've had some of their regular dishes, which aren't bad.

Ron L.

Yelp
All these transplanted New Yorkers who say the food was good here I don't know where you are from in New York but this is definitely not quality Italian by any stretch of the imagination. I've lived in New York for over 60 years nothing that I ate tonight resembled anything Italian in my opinion. The salad was just chopped up lettuce with some sliced olives and sliced peppers. And I couldn't even tell what they gave me was lasagna. The sauce was waatery no taste
