Portozuelo - Review - La Raya - Oaxaca - The Infatuation

"Portozuelo is the countryside version of the restaurant and hotel group Casa Oaxaca, with more formal venues in town. The kitchen, fueled by wood, is situated in the middle of a small farm and orchard where they cultivate herbs like epazote and yerba santa, organic vegetables like carrots and beets, and seasonal tamala pumpkins. On weekends, this place is an excuse to excursion outside the city. You’ll sit in a covered patio in front of the fields and peacefully enjoy masa specialties from the comal, like memelas with lard and fresh cheese, and large quesadillas packed with quesillo and flor de calabaza (be sure to open them up to let steam out before the first bite). This is also where to try Oaxacan barbacoa, a dish involving a lengthy overnight preparation process and, typically, the sacrificing of a whole animal, either beef or lamb." - Mariana Camacho

I Celebrated Día de los Muertos in Oaxaca, Mexico, Here's How I Planned My Once-in-a-lifetime Trip

"Portozuelo employs around 35 members of the community as cooks and servers, a handful of whom greeted us with trays of ice-cold beers and mezcal cocktails as we arrived at the kitchen-dining space, a tile-roofed structure that’s open to the elements on all sides." - Travel + Leisure Editors

This is a certified organic farm first, then a very good restaurant. Off the beaten path on some tricky roads. 30-40 minutes from downtown. They are certified organic growers. If you don't mind the smell farms have then you should go. It doesn't smell at the restaurant. A little bit of flies as it is open air. Extremely reasonable prices for a tasting of different traditional foods. The best part us you can repeat any tasting as many times as you want. Freshly made not buffet style. Very very attentive waiters. Great drinks! They are purveyors to very high end restaurants in Oaxaca city. Washrooms are impecable, but don't expect seats on the toilets. This is very common in most of Mexico. Great hiking paths and a tour of the farm is included. Bring your own translator. Farm hands do the tour. Excellent COVID protocols. You can even buy a rabbit.

Amazing place to spend the day out in the countryside. The selection of mole is so good, and you can't miss the barbacoa on Sunday. Highly recommend

Beautiful experience. We were really fortunate to visit them on their 3rd anniversary which was a big, beautiful party gathering the best Chefs and cooks from Oaxaca. If you are visiting our town, this place is a must if you want to have fun and enjoy a great culinary experience.

It was a shame that the food sucked. We had high expectations because we loved the chef’s Casa Oaxaca in centro. My husband is a Mexican citizen from Oaxaca and he was disappointed too. I had the ribs (costilla) which had two tiny bites of meat on one bone. The other bone was all fat. The third bone was just a bone. It was in a very small bowl of broth that was just ok. I sent it back and asked for chiliquiles. They were ok. My cafe de olla was almost cold. The appetizers were basic. A big disappointment. A bit of a drive out of the city but we like adventures. We found many things to do in neighboring cities so the day was not lost. From 10am to 1 it is a different menu. After 1 they serve Birria which I would hope is better. Oh and the pan dulce was good.

The lamb BBQ was really good. The service is a bit confusing if you go as a big group, but the price and quality is very good overall.

Incredible breakfast menu, made by local Oaxacan cooks. Worth the drive from Oaxaca City.

If you are in Oaxaca and able to make the hour drive to visit this restaurant, I would highly recommend it! Come hungry. A tasting menu of around 8 dishes with generous portions for about $400 pesos per person. My partner and I left very full and satisfied. Delicious, local ingredients and dishes. Incredible quality and quantity, especially for the price. We also tried their house mezcals which were smooth, flavorful, and delicious. (Not included in the price, around $80 pesos per cup.) Wish I would have taken pictures but I was too busy enjoying the food. Ambiance and service were also great. We text through WhatsApp to make reservations the day before although I'm not sure if this is required. Overall, highly recommend!
