Yelp
A classic example of a seaside restaurant leaning way too hard into its setting. I hadn't been there since I was a kid (it was pretty mediocre back then as well), and while the remodel is nice, Poseidon seems to scream out tot he world "we know we don't have to try that hard, so we won't."
The setting is pure Del Mar, both in view and clientele, but the service was surprisingly poor. We ordered two appetizers and an entree to share, and for some strange reason, and without asking our preference, they brought out all three at the same time. Since the entree was the only hot dish, we essentially had to eat that first, which was not what we wanted. A major service faux pas by a restaurant masquerading, at least, as somewhat upscale. The service was likewise a bit flummoxed in other ways, but I won't create a nit-picky laundry list here. Suffice to simply say that service is clearly not their strong suit.
As for the food, it was a mixed bag. The ceviche was a bright spot, with a generous portion, lots of fish and avocado, and a nice lemony kick. The steak and frites were decent. The sauce was a missed opportunity to add some better flavor, but the steak was cooked nicely and the fries were enjoyable. The "Bread and Spread" was unfortunately a mess. Aside from the tzatziki (and it seems pretty hard to mess up tzatziki), there were no good flavors among the sauces, with one being downright bad. Even more, the presentation was not attractive, as the spreads were just four messy smears on a plate, with no separation between them, so the flavors all ran together on the edges. It was really just not a good look. Also, and this is always annoying, there wasn't nearly enough pita for the amount of dip. One of the worst dip plates I have seen in a long time.
So, while the beachside setting is lovely, that's really the main offering at Poseidon. If you're looking for an exceptional food and service experience to go with it, you might want to roll the dice elsewhere.
