"An enduring campus-adjacent institution since 1971, this classic college bar proves the best places don’t have to change much to stay great. The beer is cold and cheap, the patio overflows on game nights, and the burgers are decent—or taste like heaven after a few Lone Stars. Generations of Austinites have passed through, from students staggering in after class to parents dropping kids off on move-in day. "You can’t mention Crown & Anchor in Austin without Posse East’s name coming into the conversation. There’s a friendly rivalry between the two, and everyone has a favorite. This sports bar has been around even longer than its rival up the road, and in that time has developed a dedicated fan base by turning out solid, admirable bar food and Tex-Mex classics (especially the queso). The crowd is a mix of Texas sports fans, grizzled UT alums that never left town, grad students grading papers, and UT football coaches. "Posse East is another deep-rooted campus bar that has been around since 1971. It is known for its beers, burgers, and queso, the latter of which has entranced hungry college kids and Austinites alike. It’s also a prime tailgating spot. While the outside looks a little like a spot that could be found in L.A., with its palm tree making the spot, the inside looks like a good old Texas roadhouse, loaded down with neon signs, wood-paneled walls, and a stage for live music. "Posse East, just north of campus, is a sports bar that’s been around since 1971, and the kitchen turns out admirable bar food and Tex-Mex classics. The queso is excellent and you should get a large to share with the table. And you can get a very good patty melt alongside pitchers of beer. They don’t have a full liquor license, so there aren’t any mixed drinks, which in some ways keeps the rowdiness at bay.
