Bernal Heights’s Lowbrow-Highbrow Restaurant Precita Social Is a Winner | Eater SF

"More low-key than Greg Lutes’s nearby 3rd Cousin, this Bernal Heights newcomer, opened at the end of summer 2025, honors his nostalgic side with the same careful technique and precision and a menu that still maintains a level of class. A tonkotsu agnolotti special showcases a deeply rich broth while marrying Italian and Japanese cuisine; among the must-order starters, roasted baby carrots arrive in a little cast-iron pan atop tzatziki, with grapes and almonds adding pops of sweetness and crunch, and thin-cut disco fries come dressed in a salty gravy—I only wish there were more of that sauce. Don’t skip the Strauss Dairy soft-serve sundaes: choose between Dubai chocolate and a rocky road that leans strawberry and toasted marshmallow rather than chocolate, and each is creamy, huge, and well-composed. The room wears handsome blues and browns with little succulents and windows looking out to Precita Park; wear something nice, but don’t overdo it." - Paolo Bicchieri

An Instagram-Popular Chef Opens Her First Restaurant in San Francisco | Eater SF

Precita Social is the neighborhood spot Bernal Heights needs - Review - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The chef behind 3rd Cousin has doubled down on his knack for straightforward food with Precita Social. The Bernal Heights restaurant, less than a mile away from its sibling, shares similar DNA—dishes are concise with just a handful of components, like a velvety-smooth cod in a pool of red miso butter or a classic burger and fries. Taking over the space that was once Hillside Supperclub and Marlena, Precita Social fills the neighborhood bistro void Bernal Heights has had since 2023. It’s the kind of place where you can roll in wearing a beat-up tee for a plate of impeccably cooked tortellini, or break out something dry clean-only to splurge with caviar and chips or an uni handroll. video credit: Patrick Wong Not everything is a smooth landing, though. That burger arrives so juicy that the bun is on the verge of collapse, and a pistachio-light sundae overpromises by being billed as Dubai chocolate. Still, the tightly packed tables, energy from the open kitchen, and gentle hum of Aretha Franklin floating above it all add up to one of those restaurants that can shape-shift with whatever kind of night you’re looking to have. RESERVE A TABLE Food Rundown Little Gem Caesar Salad The dressing is potent. Each leaf tastes like it came in the same tin as the anchovies themselves, and we love it. Don’t leave this off your order. photo credit: Patrick Wong Black Cod The meat is so slippery you could swallow a chunk whole. But before you do, make sure to cover it in the caramely miso butter sauce. photo credit: Patrick Wong Handmade Taleggio Tortellini The pasta courses are likely to change thanks to weekly farmers market hauls. Because we care about you, we hope you’ll get to experience this version with corn and peppers. The saltiness of the cheese is balanced out by the sweetness of the corn, and the sauce has every right to be its own soup course. photo credit: Patrick Wong Blue Fin Tuna Crudo This is a dish appreciated in acts. You’ll notice how buttery the fish is before getting hit with umami and tartness from tamari and yuzu, then encounter earthiness from some sprouts, before looping back to more richness thanks to dots of avocado cream. We’d get this again and again. photo credit: Patrick Wong The Precita Cheeseburger The namesake dish doesn’t live up to the thoughtfulness of the other dishes. The wagyu patty is cooked well, but it’s greasy and makes the bun soggy and the burger is overall hard to eat. You can make your fries “Disco” with a green peppercorn sauce—it’s not necessary, but if extra pepper is worth $3 to you, go for it. photo credit: Patrick Wong Dubai Chocolate And Strawberry Sundae The name set us up for pistachio and crunch, of which there isn’t much. But if you go into this dessert thinking of it as just an everyday soft serve sundae, you’ll enjoy it. photo credit: Patrick Wong Gravenstein Apple Hand Pie Delivers on everything you want from pie a la mode. The flaky mini-pies come warm with a caramel for dipping and a dollop of soft serve on the side. photo credit: Patrick Wong" - Patrick Wong

After 10 Years, a Beloved Bernal Heights Chef Will Open a Second Restaurant | Eater SF

"A second restaurant from a long‑time fine‑dining chef will debut on the corner of Precita Park this August, currently in the final heat of a Kickstarter as last touches are completed. The chef — owner/operator at Bernal Heights’s 3rd Cousin — says he’s aware of the controversy that surrounded the breakup of landlord Stephan Roulland and restaurant owners/chefs David Fisher and Serena Chow Fisher, calling it a complicated scenario and saying he’s headed into this venture clear‑eyed. He notes, “3rd Cousin is 10 years old now,” and that, “I’d thought about doing a second restaurant for many years.” Unlike the tasting‑menu approach of the former occupant, the new spot will be more casual while retaining a fine‑dining backbone: playful plates such as uni hand rolls dished as tacos, the big burgers he served throughout the worst of the pandemic, and the planned “dish of the year, disco fries,” will all appear alongside larger, more traditional mains — steaks, seafood, and powerful vegetables. A huge raw bar will anchor one black marble counter stocked with oysters and clams, and dessert ideas include a Dubai chocolate‑inspired soft‑serve sundae with pistachio, seasonal fruit, and kataifi. Beverage director Oceano Ordóñez from 3rd Cousin will oversee drinks, having curated an Old World–centered wine list plus beers from local breweries (including a neighborhood brewery), with mocktails and shrubs also on deck. Herbs and greens will come from the restaurant’s rooftop garden, powered in part by solar panels. The space — a take over of the former Marlena (briefly Foliage from chef Mo Bejar), which closed in August 2024 — has been redesigned by Sky Creative Lab, will get an additional outdoor parklet, and has seen a refinished floor and other turnkey elements; the chef reached out to Roulland in April 2025 after briefly eyeing a Presidio location. He frames the project as an opportunity to stretch beyond his upscale, special‑occasions restaurant: “This is a blank palette for me to do things I can’t do at 3rd Cousin,” adding, “People know me in Bernal Heights. I see this as my ode to comfort food.” The restaurant at 300 Precita Avenue will open in August 2025 with dinner service Wednesday through Sunday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.; reservations go live on Resy on Friday, July 18." - Paolo Bicchieri

My wife and I went here recently with our 2 close friends to celebrate our friends getting a new job. We ordered the lobster hand roll with uni and caviar, the cod, the steak, the pork belly rice bowl and the Dubai chocolate sundae. Everything was good but none of the dishes were standout amazing to me. The restaurant had a good ambiance for a celebration with our friends. I didn't leave craving the dishes afterwards or wanting more of a certain dish.

Food was delicious. The baked oysters could’ve been warmer. Some were warm while others were slightly on the cold side. Otherwise, we loved the food and the ambiance.

Google
Elevated comfort food? Heck yeah! We really tried to pace ourselves, but then we saw "My Mom's bread rolls" on the menu, and all sense went right out the window. And honestly, they were fantastic: oven hot and perfectly soft on the inside. We ended up having to take some of the ludicrously delicious pork belly rice home because we couldn't finish it, and didn't have room for dessert (which also looked incredible - next time?). We did finish the hand rolled crab pasta because not to do so would have been an abomination, and we can't disrespect crab like that. All in all, every dish we tried really hit the spot on a cold November evening. The restaurant space is cozy, perfectly tucked away in a quiet corner of Bernal Heights. Just like its sister restaurant - 3rd Cousin - it's a great spot for either a date night or a quiet and tasty hang out with some friends. We will definitely be back!

Staff was very friendly and attentive— also, we were celebrating a birthday so there was a handwritten card on the table, which was very sweet! We had the brussels sprouts, parker house rolls, chicken katsu, and pork belly rice. The standouts were the brussels sprouts and rolls, the flavors of the fusion dishes did not really work for me. I’m asian though, and bizarrely when we were eating, one of the waiters (or chefs?) came over to ask if I needed chopsticks. My partner (non-asian) and the tables next to us (non-asian) were not asked this… Overall, we enjoyed the experience and would come back to try some of the classics as opposed to their fusion dishes!

Google
A dream of a neighborhood restaurant. The atmosphere was both welcoming and warm — it was my birthday during restaurant week and we felt well taken care of. The food was fresh and inventive, extremely well executed versions of classics such as hanger steak and the black cod was more than a match for the dish served at Nobu. The oysters were creamy and house made mignonette was perfect. I recommend the house Parker roll with the whipped butter and salt. All dishes were well seasoned and balanced. The service was attentive and gracious. Desserts - bread pudding and chocolate sundae were a delight. Best meal we have had in the Bay in years.

Wonderful food and service. Happy I got to visit on the very first night, will definitely be back again. The gelato with Dubai chocolate dessert was amazing, hope it’ll stay for the long term!

Upon arrival, multiple staff members looked directly at and didn’t acknowledge us. The host kept focus on his tablet without even a hello, and after a long, awkward pause finally asked what we “needed help with”, instead of simply offering a table for two. He then said he’d have to check with the waitress to see if she could “take another table,” which made us feel like we should be grateful just to sit down. We were seated at a table another party had just refused, crammed in a crowded corner in an otherwise very empty restaurant. The waitress never introduced herself or welcomed us. Her tone the entire evening was curt and transactional. It gave the impression that customers were an inconvenience rather than valued guests. I got a watery pasta with broccoli, not at all flavorful. The rest of the food was good. The only bright spot was the bussing staff, who actually smiled. First impressions matter, hospitality matters, and consistency in the kitchen matters. Until that is addressed, I cannot recommend this place.

Yelp
The service started great. Welcomed. A card that was left for our anniversary celebration. Wow, amazing. Unexpected. We ordered. I ordered the Heritage Pork Chop. It came sliced. Wait what? I ordered a pork chop, not sliced pork. No mention of sliced on the menu. Never expected sliced. It wasn't great. Not juicy. Not a chop. Not what I expected. Like, at all. So I said something. Oh boy. I got a full explanation from the chef and what followed felt like a pity discount off the great dessert. Didn't need a discount. Just a chop. Unsliced. Like the menu stated. The chef made me feel uncomfortable. Ew. My experience.

Yelp
Menu was all over the place, but that was the best part. Really enjoyed our meal here at Precita. The Little gem salad was their take on the caesar salad: perfect balance of brightness with the briny/saltiness of anchovies. I could eat that every week. I was really craving their burger and it didn't disappoint. The sizzling rice I would say fell a little flat: was hoping that with the clay pot the heat would create a crispy bottom. However, the menu was eclectic enough that I'd like to go back. One knock was that the gap between dinner service and dessert felt too long. The rhythm of the dinner was great, but the lull waiting for dessert made the experience feel a little long winded. The FoH apologized and noted that the same person shucking oysters was also on the dessert station, so due to the order of oysters that hit the orders before our dessert, they were busy shucking. I found it a little odd that the raw bar station was also manned by the same person working desserts, but I'm happy that my Sundae didn't taste like oysters. Either way, would still go back. Loved the design of the place and decor.

Yelp
I have to put a disclaimer here since I've dined at 3rd cousin and was disappointed with that tasting menu. I was very hesitant to come here but my girlfriends made the reservation and I didn't want to create any hubbub. However, when everyone at a table of 5 is not satisfied, the issue isn't just with me. I didn't even bother taking pictures. Logistics- parking was fairly easy around the park, which was surprising for a Saturday night. Ambiance - very modern and nicely spaced out. Reminds me of Marlena when it was here. Service- excellent. Exceeded my expectations, especially with what I experienced at 3rd cousin. Food - my friend summed up the food best as mediocre and bland. We had the hand roll, little gem salad, steak frites, black cod, mushroom rice and Brussels sprouts. It's just not what I expect to get when paying a premium price for what is supposed to feel like fine dining. I really wanted this restaurant to redeem my prior experience at 3rd cousin, but I left yet again disappointed. Although I left disappointed, I wish this chef much success and hope that he works on changing up the flavor profiles on his dishes.

Yelp
To be fair I've loved nearly every restaurant that's graced this location since ~2012 or so. But this one is delightful in its own way. At the waiter's suggestion we ate family style from a selection of plates across the menu. The food was great, though my Japanese relatives were skeptical of the size and taco-esque features of the hand roll (neither rolled nor hand-held). It was tasty, no doubt! But treat it like a single serve, rich and decadent bite (vs an appetizer) and your expectations may be more tempered. We also had the country pate bites (never had anything quite like it!), little gem salad, cod, chicken katsu and pork belly sizzling rice with egg. Although several are listed as entrees/rice dishes, portion sizes were all a bit different (the rice was largest and easiest to share). This was also true of the (excellent) desserts, where the sundaes looked enormous (a neighboring table ordered one) and our bread pudding and pear hand pies (winner) were more modestly sized. I enjoyed how the raised edge of every serving plate eased the one-handed spooning of food, and then missed that feature chasing every last morsel on my own share plate (especially during dessert, where I lacked a second utensil). The place is a bit loud for my preference, but I know that's in these days. I got lucky the waiter for our 5-top was standing next to me or I wouldn't have been able to hear them. I even ordered oysters that never came, but i forgot about it until later in the meal- seeing they never made it to the bill, I realized she probably couldn't hear me well either. It's possible the larger group a few tables away was making it unusually loud (influencers? Bachelorette? They were dressed to the nines and had a pro photographer with them), but even so, the hard surfaces everywhere aren't doing them any favors. I'll try a quieter night next time and try the dishes we missed.

Yelp
The food, the service and the experience is pleasant but this is on the expensive/overpriced side. Ambience is relaxed and casual. Parking was easy, to make it for dinner at 7pm. I got the mushroom rice bowl and shared family style. It was nice but didn't blow my mind. There was a shortage of reasonably priced protein options so I left feeling a little disappointed.

Yelp
My adventures in San Francisco continue... I decided to try to grab an early dinner and found Precita Social. Because it was so early, I just wanted a light bite, and asked the waitress for a few suggestions. She wasn't overly helpful but gave me the standard. Everything is good comment. OK then I thought maybe I would get a couple of hand rolls, but tried one which was fabulous. The hand roll was filled with lobster, uni, and caviar. It was absolutely glorious! In retrospect, I should've had two hand rolls and called it today. I opted for the sizzling pot of pork belly rice. I was looking forward to the extra crispy bottom of the bowl where the rice is all nice and crispy and flavorful. The bowl was presented, and table service was just really awkward to begin with. The serving pieces were presented in the hot bowl. There wasn't place to put the service-ware, except on the table, and that's awkward. So, I had to leave them in the bowl, which made them hot to the touch. The bowl was given to me with serving utensils in it, and I kept trying to grab wait staff to ask for something more appropriate and Nada. The pork belly was pretty tasty. Not fabulous as anticipated, but just tasty enough for basic enjoyment. The rice was pretty much the same. As I dug my way to the bottom of the bowl for those crispy bits and the bottom, I discovered there wasn't any. That's right . Just nothing. So essentially what I ordered and what I got was not exactly the same thing. It ended up just being a bowl of rice with some ingredients tossed in it. Not overly flavorful, but basic enough. Pricey, and not necessarily worth a return visit

Quality of food, amazing staff, and overall ambiance are always the best here! The hand rolled tonnarelli did not disappoint!

Yelp
I was already a fan of Chef Greg! So of course I had to check out his new restaurant. The menu is very different from third cousin, but still the same great taste and quality Precita social might have changed the luck of this location that was once home to some other restaurants! I really loved the Uni and lobster hand roll . I especially loved that Chef uses fresh ingredients. The standouts for me were when he used stone fruits, and the straciatella. It was mind blowing amazing with flavor and texture. What also blew my mind and I was curious about was what disco fries were. The sauce is like crack whatever he's doing with green peppercorn. The flavor is so unique. I'm not really a pork belly fan, but the pork belly clay pot was surprisingly very tasty and great for sharing . Overall, I think you'll find a variety of dishes on the menu that you'll enjoy.

Vince C.

Yelp
I wasn't sure what to expect when I joined friends for dinner at Precita Social. The service was excellent and the food was as well. I arrived a bit late and the other diners had already consumed a round of appetizers from the Raw Bar. I ordered a burger that we shared amongst 5 people and it was quite tasty. We ordered 5 items and nothing disappointed, a standouts were the Sizziling Mushroom Rice and the Chicken Katsu. The wine suggestion from the server was on the mark and added to a meal that was well worth the trek. If you are not familiar with the neighborhood, parking can be a challenge so give yourself some time.

Yelp
Nice new spot with a mix of cheaper and more expensive menu items that tastes pretty good. I thought the lobster was a bit under done, but the pasta with the lobster was super good. I also liked the service here, everyone is super friendly.

Yelp
As a threshold matter I really want this restaurant to succeed. I live in the neighborhood and I've enjoyed dining at 3rd Cousin. Here are the Hits, Misses and one Horror. Hits - The servers were knowledgeable and the service was excellent. The wine list was well priced and had a number of good choices. We shared the Mussels which were prepared in an opal basil pesto and served with warm toasted bread - they were perfectly cooked and the sauce was sublime. For dessert we shared the Gravenstein Apple hand Pie which was paired with salted caramel sauce and soft serve ice cream - a perfect melody of flavors that we thoroughly enjoyed. The Black Cod with "Glacial" Spinach and red miso butter - it was interesting and the cod was perfectly cooked - the portion was tiny. Perhaps the menu writer used the word glacial in its post-climate change meaning. Misses - Our other entrees were disappointing. The American Wagyu Coulotte was cooked to my request - medium rare - but the steak was tough and I'd not have the consistency of Wagyu. As a progression, the green peppercorn sauce was tasty and would have made an excellent pairing with a better cut of steak. Finally, we had the Hand-Made Taleggio with Tortellini-corn & Jimmy Nardello 10 year balsamic. The Tortellini-corn sauce was interesting and tasty but the Taleggio was dry and did not seem fresh. Overall the dish lacked the harmony of flavors we anticipated from its description and left us underwhelmed. Horrors - The noise level was intolerable. We had to shout to hear each other. To be sure, the noise problem was exacerbated by a noisy expletive-spewing table behind us whose conversation would have made a group of stevedores blush (not PSC's fault) and the music piped in (PCS's fault) - between the two it was impossible to hear. Indeed, I have no voice today. Overall, I am giving Precita Social a B/B-. There is a lot of potential here and I want them to succeed. We all agreed that we will not be rushing back.

Yelp
We had a fantastic dinner here - incredible food, lovely attentive service and a beautiful setting. We had some of the freshest big island oysters I've had to start, along with an awesome stone fruit salad. The steak with green peppercorn sauce was perfectly cooked as was the cod. We loved the mushroom umami rice and the Mac and cheese too. Greg is doing a fantastic job and we can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Love our Saturday date night at Precita Social! This new restaurant is beautifully designed with high end aesthetics that still feel cozy and inviting. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. It's the perfect neighborhood spot! We loved the peppercorn steak with disco fries, black cod, and baked oysters! The desserts were out of this world! The Dubai chocolate ice cream Sunday was amazing! I want to go back and order that for dinner.

Sviatlana N.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this place! The uni handroll, miso black cod, and bluefin tuna were out of this world. Beautifully executed dishes, amazing flavors - I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Really great addition to the neighborhood. Inviting, intimate setting. Wonderful, delicious food. Good wine. I will definitely return.

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood and was excited about this place opening. I thought I'd splurge and order the lobster, but unfortunately it was overcooked and tasted stringy and chewy like overcooked chicken.I thought I would tell someone about my lobster, but I felt like the owners checked in on every table except ours. I also felt like my beer was from a can and not from an as-advertised tap since it didn't fill the glass all the way full and didn't have that fresh taste. The rest of the meal was so-so as well. And it also felt like it was supposed to be a casual food experience, but had upscale dining prices. All in all, I was kind of disappointed in the experience. But I know they just opened, so I expect things to improve and will give them another chance.

MK T.

Yelp
I really wants to love this place as I have loved 3rd Cousin but this didn't hit its mark AT ALL! The decor and ambiance was ok but the tables were incredibly close , to the point that you need to move the tables next to you to exit or enter your seat. And btw I'm 5'8", 118lbs so I'm thin and still needed to move them. The food----so mediocre and below for the price. We got a gem salad and it was literally 7 pieces of butter lettuce with shavings of Parmesan and some croutons (no anchovies like I thought it would have since it said anchovy salad) and it was $19! And when I ordered my American Waygu steak med-rare it was extremely tough and stringy. Did not taste like the American Waygu I've had many times elsewhere. I would say this place needs some revamping of their menu and be more choosy when they order ingredients from their suppliers. Overall I wanted to love it but it's a HARD NO to repeat and will let my friends know that this is a place to skip.

Gary W.

Yelp
We've been visiting 3rd Cousin for years and were thrilled to hear that Chef Greg was opening Precita Social around the corner from our place. It's a beautiful location right on the corner of Precita Park, and it has a lively ambience but not so loud that it hinders conversation. Our first visit did not disappoint, and we can't wait to taste our way through the rest of the menu. We were also pleasantly surprised at the reasonable price point, given the level of the experience. The tortellini with corn & jimmy nardello peppers was my own favorite, but everything that we tried was delicious. The service was highly personable and made us feel right at home, which is one of the aspects that has always distinguished 3rd Cousin. We're so happy to have the same kind of experience our side of the hill!
