The 21 Best Things to Do in Charleston

"If you seek an authentic Charleston keepsake, this store off King Street has you covered. Think of it as a souvenir shop with taste and soul. Every item they source is locally made, with the exception of books that may have been published elsewhere, and pecans from a farm two hours north. The independent boutique was founded by and is still run by one of Charleston’s prominent preservation groups, thus the name. After your initial walk-through, head to the back room for comfy couches, old wood floors and tapestry rugs, a gaggle of great books to peruse, and air-conditioning!" - Allston McCrady

Preservation Society of Charleston — Shop Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Let’s start with scale. Boutique or department store? Think of it as a souvenir shop with taste and soul. Every item they source is locally made, with the exception of books that may have been published elsewhere, and pecans from a farm two hours north. The independent boutique was founded by and is still run by one of Charleston’s prominent preservation groups, hence the name. Store proceeds benefit the society. For those of you who haven’t visited the shop in years, it bears noting that staffing is no longer on a volunteer basis by sweet, grey-haired ladies. The store is revamped, fresh, competitive, and relevant— a great outlet for Charleston’s many talented artisans, and an excellent spot for gifts and souvenirs. What can we find here, or what should we look for? The southern and regional cookbook collection here is amazing, including the latest from local chefs. There are small-batch Grenadines, tonics, and bitters made by Jack Rudy Cocktail Co., plus sea salts produced a short drive up the coast. Hand-stitched, durable, unisex totes and leather wallets by J. Stark sit alongside one-of-a-kind handbags made with upholstery and leather by Add Libb. Old Whaling Co. makes natural “body butters” and soaps in subtle perfumes of French lavender or bergamot and grapefruit. In the corner is a great collection of historic Charleston maps printed on archival paper, adjacent to a rustic set of crackled ceramic bowls and trays. Petite seersucker-style reversible handbags feature circular grabs fashioned by local sweetgrass basket weavers. If money’s no object, what goes in the cart? Some larger, more ornate and time-consuming sweetgrass baskets in the store’s back room sell for upwards of $1,750, and your heart is in the right place if you choose to make that splurge, because you would be supporting an invaluable Gullah tradition passed down from generation to generation since slavery. The store carries the most comprehensive collection of Brackish Bowties, a homegrown company that has taken flight nationally. Who doesn’t want a $695 cummerbund handcrafted entirely of guinea hen plumage? A more common splurge is to select one of many feather bowties that typically sell for $195, with higher-priced limited editions. There are feather earrings to boot, and the shopkeeper encourages visitors to take the feathers out into the sunlight to appreciate their iridescence while debating a purchase. A large handcrafted cast iron skillet by Smithey Ironware retails for $200. And … what if we’re on a strict budget? You could pick up a book dedicated to actor and Charleston resident Bill Murray’s party-crashing antics for $26. There are beautifully photographed prints by Justin Falk that come either matted or as notecards, including a sprawling shot of the famous Angel Oak retailing for $15. Or best of all, spend $3 on the Preservation Society’s bumper sticker to help spread the motto “Gut Fish Not Houses." Who else shops here? Anyone and everyone walks off King Street and into this store. The feather bowties in the window lure people in. Any secret tips? I love the fact that cypress furniture craftsman Capers Landrum Cauthen, whose minimalist side tables retail here, is himself the child of a former Executive Director of the society. Head to the back room for comfy couches, old wood floors and tapestry rugs, a gaggle of great books to peruse, and air-conditioning! Also, although the circular iron staircase in the store’s front room looks awfully tempting, please don’t try to climb it. It leads to the Preservation Society’s actual offices above." - Allston McCrady

Wow! This is an amazing shop run by an NGO promoting and protecting the city of Charleston and its heritage and architecture. The shop is truly amazing. They sell exceptionally high quality handmade crafts and goods from artisans in and around Charleston. And the bookshop in the back has a wonderful and eclectic selection. From my strolling through old Charleston, I’d become curious about some architectural features in the city neighborhoods… so I was very pleased when I found some books on this topic at the Preservation Society. My only regret is that I arrived too close to closing time and did not get to peruse the other hand-crafts as much as I would have liked. I’ll have to go back someday, and I recommend you to do so too!

I’m sure there are a lot of great walking tours by the society, but the mystique history tour offered less than I hoped. It was a two hour walk to took at about six or so houses on the outside and, if we could peer through the fences, we could see their gardens. I guess I was hoping for more history of public historical buildings. Some people on the tour appeared to like looking at the outside of the houses, we didn’t find it very interesting. It wasn’t an architectural tour so there was some history of the owners and some here say.

Lovely shop with local artisan crafts and truly unique products. (Also tax-free because it's a nonprofit.) Worth a visit, regardless.

Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great gift ideas with many unique options. And if you're a book lover, this is the place for you. I only picked three but easily could have chosen three dozen. Prices are reasonable with some high-end items on the pricier side. If you're looking for a gift or souvenir Charleston related, I would recommend the Preservation Society.

Yelp
If you want to get a nice souvenir for someone and support the lovely city of Charleston, this is the place to do it! I bought a Brackish bracelet for my wife here and she liked how unique it was. You can't get something like this anywhere else. The bracelet I chose was exclusively made for Preservation Society of Charleston. If I'm ever back here, I'll probably have to pick up one of the awesome Brackish bowties or other fun item here.

Yelp
Coolest store I've been to in years! Love where the proceeds go, appreciated the staff and absolutely adored all the merchandise. Had to exercise self control because my girlfriend and I wanted to buy everything. All the merchandise is local, and the staff can tell you about the artisan makes it & also tell you why its awesome. From the feathers used in the jewelry / bowties / cummerbunds, to the handmade shuckers (I had to get one), to the fancy cookware that my girlfriend freaking loves. Everything is fairly priced and the proceeds help preserve the architecture in this magnificent town!

Wish it was open later but loved the merchandise.Wish the prices were a bit lower but still had some great stuff for the trip.

Yelp
Such a neat place! They sell things made by local artists and it's nonprofit. My sister bought a beautiful purse and my friend got one of a kind peacock earrings. Definitely must check it out!

Yelp
This is a really fun shop here on King Street. They have a huge assortment of feathered bowties, cumber buns, jacket pocket liners, and women's jewelry accessories too. I have small clutch and purses and tote bags as well. It's definitely a fun store to browse and check out all of their offerings. They also had in their display cases a variety of knives.

Yelp
Interesting collection of items in a smaller store. The book section in the back of the store is not to be missed. Good selection on topics like gardens and landscape architecture in the Charleston area that you won't see many other places. Definitely worth stopping by and browsing.

Yelp
The little gift shop at the corner of King and Queen is such a nice space! For how much stock they have, the space is very neat with staff ready to assist. While some things are a bit pricey, you can find some wonderful local items including the Old Whaling Company line of bath products ( lerv the Sea La Vie ) and cute books like Monsters in Charleston ( Timothy Banks, can you come write a New Orleans on?! ). The back room is even more books and maps for those interested. Take in the architecture and shelving even if you don't make a purchase. It's lovely.

Yelp
Another gem found in Charleston today. A beautiful store that shows off the local crafts and history of the city and surrounding areas. It has everything in here that you may wish to purchase and take home to remind you of this beautiful city. Or for those of us lucky enough to live here, bring home a piece of decor to add to our home. They have books, local old maps, sea grass baskets, beautiful Brackish Bow ties, earrings, pins and even cummerbunds. I could honestly go on & on. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The shop is a little pricey for some stuff but as you know, you are in control of your wallet!! Joking aside, if you are in town don't miss The Preservation Society. A pure southern treat awaits you.

Yelp
The store was pleasantly surprising in its large assortment of offerings. The staff was very friendly and helpful. It was fun to browse some of their unique items.

Yelp
Wonderful finds new and old. Great selection of books. I'm a designer looking for books on local art and architecture. I found so much more! The staff was lovely. Very helpful. Pointed me to items that I hadn't seen. They sell cold water VERY necessary walking around Charleston in the summer. They are a non profit & don't charge tax. A small donation to their Reatoration fund is appreciated. I highly recommend popping in!

Yelp
We were enjoying our bicycle ride through Charleston and I was in search of a bookstore. I had heard about the famous "Charleston Receipts"- the oldest Junior League cookbook still in print. A lovely local woman stopped to say hello and I asked her help to direct us to the local big bookstore. Instead she recommended that we visit the Preservation Society as they would surely have what I was looking for and more. What a great tip! Located on the corner of King and Queen, the Preservation Society of Charleston operates a wonderful gift/book store. The ladies that ran this location were friendly and helpful- some of the nicest people we met on our trip. I picked up a copy of the famed Receipts for myself and my mom, who taught me to favor these locally produced cookbooks containing the passed down recipes, or "receipts" (read the forward in the book for the story on the name). We also picked up a lovely guidebook, a map and some other history books for hubby. This was the highlight of the afternoon and we will make the effort to drop in on our next visit! Thanks ladies!

Yelp
I lived in Charleston for much of my childhood and was happy to find this shop during one of my visits back to the Lowcountry. It's full of books, recipe books, paintings, etc of having to do with Charleston. I would have loved to have made a few purchases but their credit card machine was down that day. The staff was friendly and apologetic and told me where there was a nearby ATM but I didn't have time unfortunately. Well, I guess I'll have to make sure to stop next time I'm in town.

Yelp
Great organization with a mission essential to Charleston's long term success. Oldest Preservation Society in the USA!
