18 Essential Mexican Restaurants in Phoenix

"Home-style Michoacán-influenced cooking is the premise at this comfy family-run restaurant housed in a midtown strip mall. Regulars swear by the breakfast menu, which includes chilaquiles and their own chorizo, but there are many standouts, including elote, enchiladas, juicy, crisp-edged carnitas, and cinnamon-dusted horchata." - Nikki Buchanan

How Houston Chefs Collaborate With Refugee Farmers to Produce Some of the City’s Best Dishes | Eater Houston

"I watch Chef Adam Dorris braise coils of baby bok choy in the juices of a beef chuck from a nearby cattle ranch, though before they wilt the bright greens and stems sizzle on a flat top as they await a special that pairs the bok choy with sweet potatoes and pureed sunchokes. Dorris has long sourced greens from the founding farmers of Plant It Forward Farms, and his menu reflects a deliberate commitment to keeping dishes local and seasonal — “I just kind of play jazz,” he says — using whatever is available. He opened Presidio in 2017 with Charles Bishop after leaving Pax Americana." - Cat Modlin-Jackson

Having heard that a new Presidio was nearby, we drove over and are so glad we did. Much more spacious than our previous eating adventure at the Thomas Street venue. I was so happy with a new dish to me, the Quesobirria tres taco dish. I asked for sour cream to go with the cilantro and onion toppings. What a treat! With the frenzily-fresh guacamole & chips, we were too full to end with their incredible Flan, which we always end our meal with at Presidio. Our waitress, Ana, was a delight, even though we made her bring our food out to the patio on a not too warm day, where my hearing aids were happier. We were entertained by the sparrows in the shrubbery, rather than the ambient indoor music.

Google
Presidio Cocina Mexicana has officially become one of my favorite go-to spots in Phoenix. They’ve moved to their new location just off 7th St, north of McDowell, and from the moment you walk in, you can feel the great energy and welcoming vibe. On my first visit, I ordered the trio fajitas with chicken, steak, and shrimp, served with rice, beans, and fresh tortillas. Everything was flavorful, but the steak stole the show so much so that I came back and ordered the steak fajitas on my second visit, and they were just as incredible. I also had their hibiscus drink (Jamaica), and it was perfectly balanced not too sweet, just how I like it. I wish I remembered the name of the gentleman who helped walk me through their tequila selection, but he was extremely knowledgeable. You can always tell a great spot by the tequila they serve and Presidio doesn’t disappoint. They don’t just serve the basic branded stuff. They carry real, quality tequilas that you’d find in top-tier spots in Mexico. If you’re craving delicious, authentic Mexican food with great service and a solid drink menu, I highly recommend Presidio Cocina Mexicana. I already know what I’m ordering next time the chilaquiles. Can’t wait to be back! #PresidioCocinaMexicana #PhoenixEats #MexicanFoodDoneRight #SupportLocalAZ

Google
Really like the new place. Our waitress was super friendly as she walked us through the menu, her recommendations, and checked on us throughout the meal. It's a great atmosphere to just hang out and enjoy some good food. And yes, the food was good, really good, really really good.

Rachel I.

Google
Was here the day they opened so I’m sure that influenced how well they were running. We waited 40 minutes for a table, after they told us it would be 25 minutes max. Ordered waters and fresh juice to start, staff was friendly if a bit frazzled. Had to ask for silverware. Ordered a corn dip to start it was fine not amazing. The entrees were 4/5 pretty good but they sent out 3 wrong items. Asked for no cilantro on 2 things and they both came covered in it. The corrected it, but some of our party was finished eating by the time the remade dishes came back. Still we had fun here and I’m sure they’re working out the kinks! I’d be back if I was in town again. My biggest issue was that the bathrooms suck. Tiny and only one stall each with barn doors which do not block sound… uncomfortable.

Finally decided to try this place since hearing so much about it. We were so excited but left disappointed. Our waitress Evelyn was awesome she really tried her best to keep her section happy but kitchen was so slow. Almost 30 min to get our food so she was nice enough to ask her manager if we could get another round of drinks which we did and we appreciate her for that. As you can see from our shared photos. The Carne asada plate was a joke. $20 for a tiny piece of meat with mostly fat, unflavorful rice and beans with a side of soggy lettuce, really? The tacos were not good at all either. Their pastor was mostly chewy fat, the chicken taco was dry and the fish taco was nothing better. Definitely will have to be a pass on this one. Off day? No excuse in our opinion. We do not recommend it.

Google
The third time here , bad service , so many servers are walking around , like bees that don’t make honey .. we ordered guacamole, it was very plain no taste .. then the server recommended the seafood plate which came with pork in it .. seafood plate should never include pork.. I was disappointed!

nancy C.

Google
Omg the pozole was 100/10 amazing! I ordered a small just to play it safe but next time I will definitely do the bigger bowl. The shrimp wasn’t cooked to my liking but I did order one shrimp taco 🌮 glad I only ordered one taco.

Google
This restaurant moved to this location in the last year or so, and it offers authentic Mexican food and has what looks like a legit tequila bar (I don't drink tequila, so can't give a qualified comment on it). Service was great - attentive without being distracting, and always with a smile. The food is more than your common "basic" Mexican - this is authentic with a heaping helping of love and culinary artistry. The food is made to order fresh, and you can tell. I had the steak fajitas; it was delicious and more than I could eat. My wife had their enchiladas, and raved about them. This is a locally owned restaurant, and another that I would highly recommend anytime you want a good [Mexican] meal.

Yelp
I honestly don't leave reviews very often but this place blew my mind super authentic and yummy. It's an open kitchen. Everything is very calm and organized. The Quesabirria was so yummy and our server was the absolute cutest. love her definitely recommend getting the Horchata new favorite spot for date night.

Yelp
Back at it again this weekend. Had the chile rellano and it didn't disappoint. I'm on a mission to try everything on the menu this year it seems. Haha. Juan was our server again and he's awesome. Always making sure we order things right and suggesting items if stuck between two items.

Yelp
Very nice and cosy restaurant. Came here for their flavorful brunch. First thing I noticed was their chair, the luxurious feel of leather on your back, left me a positive impression already. The menu items were unique and lots to choose from. Steak and eggs, omelets, burritos, really a good mix and the prices are pretty good. Coffee is strong, service is great!

Yelp
We have been here about 4 or 5 times in the month since we discovered this place was open and it has been consistently excellent every time. It's our go-to place for nice Mexican food, esp if we have out of towners visiting. The guacamole is excellent and a huge portion. Great for a larger party - even for 3 of us it was too much. The birria tacos were great, my husband liked his boring chicken burrito and said we should come back, and the mole enchiladas were also excellent. We haven't tried breakfast yet but WE WILL. I don't even like flan and theirs is AMAZING, soft and less "eggy". Our friend said the Tres Leches cake was incredible and one of the best he's ever had. Parking is easy (don't park in the Marisco Boys lot, there are threatening signs everywhere), service is friendly and quick, and the space is nice and open. This will be a go-to spot for our family!

Yelp
Tonight, we decided to try Presidio Cocina Mexicana restaurant for dinner. Can't go wrong with the shrimp enchiladas, and the Al Pastor tacos were perfect. We may have found one of our new top Mexican restaurants in Phoenix.
google avatar

Yelp
Breakfast sandwich and cafe de hoya was a 10/10. The black skillet had the fajitas those we're great too
google avatar

Daniela H.

Yelp
The food is delicious, some of the best Mexican food I've tried here in AZ. The service is great .. our waiter was friendly, and helpful whe asked to make a few suggestions on appetizers & deserts. The ambience is nice, they play great music and the place is asthetic and clean.

Yelp
As usual I was traveling through Phoenix for the day and decided to find some goo, but authentic Southwest Mexican food to eat. So my business partner and I relied on the Yelp reviews to lead us here. The outside doesn't look like much but once inside it's transformed into a finer dining Mexican restaurant. The servers are friendly and helpful and the A/C works great! No alcohol for us since we were on the clock but the bar sure looked inviting. Started with chips and guacamole that was really good. Loved that the chips were hot and homemade. My buddy had the fajitas and said they tasted good. I had the dinner enchiladas and really liked them. I was slightly surprised that my enchiladas were only warm and not hot. That led a slightly lower score. The flan was outstanding. Overall a great place and I would come back again!

Yelp
We love this place! We have eaten here too many times to count, it is that good. The food is amazing every single time. We love the Papas De Dinner & Enchiladas. The Tres De Leches is unreal. The service is always exceptional and they make you feel like family! The new location is super cute too. Can't express how much we love Presidio

Yelp
I feel like brunch spots have a difficult time deciding whether or not they want the food to look good OR taste good, but luckily Presidio Cocina can do both! I often find that trendy brunch spots are overpriced and the food doesn't fit the bill, but the tacos (tinga, chorizo, and (iirc) pork) and the tres leches French toast were soooo good. We also had ceviche and aguachiles (which were both okay), but the chicharron was delicious. The taco meats were all uniquely seasoned and garnished perfectly, but it was so much I was full by my third taco! Although I had a delightful experience, I do have two things to mention: the service was a little bit odd, our server had a difficult time splitting the bill among the table. And we ordered a mimosa flight, but didn't receive a "flight." Typically when you order a flight of any kind of drink, you expect small glasses of different flavors or qualities, but at this restaurant, they let you pick two flavors of juice and bring you a bottle of champagne. It wasn't bad, it was just confusing. And a little bit disappointing that we only got to choose from two juices (lol). Overall, it was a great experience and I'd totally bring folks in again for a round 2.

Yelp
Had to give this place another try after my daughter raved about it. Glad we did, so much better than the first time we came and everything tasted amazing. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The aguas were very good and so was the desserts. We enjoyed everything we ate even the menudo. My mother is very picky but she loved it. They do get busy so I would suggest getting a reservation if not be prepared to wait. Restrooms were cleaned

Yelp
In town for the Rock & Roll Phoenix Half Marathon and pulled this up on Yelp and wasn't disappointed. Food and service was excellent!

Yelp
Wasn't easy to find but the restaurant but it was clean. Inside felt nice and cool. And they had a cute bar. Food was great. Service was friendly as well to us. We always thank workers that are nice to our toddler. Decent music too. We ordered Chips and salsa, Mole and Build tacos. Private lot on the side.

Yelp
You guys, just go. This was hands down one of the most delicious and authentic meals I've had in a long time. We stopped in after seeing a show downtown. The atmosphere is open and comfortable. I ordered a Mango Moscow Mule that came with a Chamoy Tagin Rim. It was super refreshing. For appetizers we had the guacamole, Chicharrón and Grilled Panela. The guac was good, super fresh. The Grilled Panela came with mushrooms/squash and corn tortillas. It was also really good but let me tell you the life changing experience I had with the Chicharrón!! It was fried absolutely perfectly. It had a nice crisp, as did the outside of the pork belly but man the rest just melted in my mouth!! A bite with the jalapeño and pickled onion was pure magic. For my main entree I chose the 3 tacos with comes with rice, beans or elote for an up charge. I went with the elote and was glad I did! It was creamy and perfectly balanced. I cannot wait to return to Presido Cochina! Definitely eating my way through their menu!

Yelp
Checked this spot out for lunch which visiting a friend in Arizona. Wow!! Their breakfast is delicious. There's limited parking in the front, but a ton in the back. The servers are all very attentive and sweet. Got their huevos rancheros and it was so delicious. I was able to substitute the beans for rice. The dish was so flavorful! They have a ton on different stuff on their menu and I believe they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner all day. Their dessert menu sounded good but I was so full. Their sweets are baked fresh.
google avatar

Shelbie P.

Yelp
I came here for lunch with my friends and we really enjoyed all the food and our service was great. The restaurant is a little small, but it was not busy when we went around 1:30pm so it was nice. I got the chicken Torta, which was really good, but could use more of the chipotle mayo. I ordered an additional side, which was $1.50 which I thought was ridiculous because they only give you about a teaspoon extra, but I didn't know it was extra until I got my bill and I didn't feel like bringing this up. I would have just appreciated the heads up that it was $1.50 extra. Anyways, it was good Mexican food.
google avatar

Donald R.

Yelp
Food here was delicious I had the chiliquias, the service was awesome as well I would definitely recommend Presidio. Oh and the drinks were great!
google avatar

Esther M.

Yelp
Everything was top notch and tasted wonderful! I had the chicken enchiladas with red sauce, very savory. Green chile chicken tamale was very good, spicy sauce which I enjoyed. Beans are very authentic, loved them! I'm not used to yellow rice but I really loved them too. Will definitely be back!!

Yelp
If your menu features Queso Fundido it's pretty hard to get anything less than 4 stars from me. Presidio Cocina Mexicana's (PCM) big menu features Queso Fundido and it was the perfect remedy to the Budget Rental Car nightmare that preceded my coming here. In fact, I'd left the airport so hungry and agitated that I might've asked Siri to find me the "nearest Queso Fundido"; it's difficult to say how I wound up choosing PCM. Like almost every Arizona eatery, PCM features a full array of alcohol. The bottles are lined up attractively but the food menu is of greater interest. Breakfast is served all day, but the menu goes far beyond mere breakfast. Meals run in the $15-$20 range and though I often prefer a cheap taqueria for Mexican fare, this - food, service, and ambiance - was a very nice experience. In addition to a shared Queso Fundido (excellent, accompanied by chips & salsa and/or tortillas) I ordered Chilaquiles and sampled the tacos. Chilaquiles were lovely in presentation, with half doused in red sauce and the other half doused in green, and benefited significantly from an added splash of salsa. Tacos? Equally enjoyable but I admit to having wandering eyes. A man at a nearby table ordered Fajitas and they looked so enticing that I had to inquire "as good as they look?" to which I received a positive affirmation. So next time it's the Fajitas and the Queso Fundido. Not too far from the Phoenix Airport, PCM is a great choice not only for those times when it takes forever to secure a rental car.

Yelp
The service is solid and the menu is inviting. It's a great spot for brunch -- they have a full bar and offer a range of great Mexican staples. We experienced a bit of inconsistency on the food preparation but they were quick to remedy. It's expensive for what you get and we'll have a hard time going back.

Michael D.

Yelp
Drinks were really good as was the food. Restaurant was about 3/4 full but service was prompt. The waitress also talked me through drink and food options to help me decide what I wanted. Prices were consistent with the market.
google avatar

Tracie O.

Yelp
My last visit was amazing. This visit not so much. Service was VERY slow. It took forever for our drinks to come out and the margaritas had seltzer in them, making them bubbly which was odd and not how they are usually served here. My friend's fish taco was over cooked and the fish was not good. The guac was delicious but we had to ask multiple times for water and refills. I'm bummed because when Presidio is good, it's well worth the stop but this visit made me regret choosing it.
google avatar

Hersh A.

Yelp
Presidio serves delicious homemade Mexican cuisine. They specialize in Michoacán-inspired Mexican homestyle cooking. It's a family-owned and operated business that's run by the Nava family. The restaurant offers a menu of made-from-scratch dishes, most of them based on old family recipes refined by Nava's mother, Lucina, a native of the west-central Mexican state of Michoacán. On my first visit, my family and I tried their Cilantro Lime Salad w/ grilled chicken, Torta Ahogada w/ Cochinita Pibil, Chicken Enchiladas, and a refreshing cocktail whose name escapes me right now. The food from its presentation to taste was really flavorful and good. It was fresh and tasty. Also, the service was pretty good. We enjoyed our meal and had a good experience. Check them out when in Phoenix. Presidio worth a visit and more.
google avatar

Debra S.

Yelp
Everything was great! Service and food is always spot on! If you have not been here, you must come!
google avatar

Steph W.

Yelp
A couple of years back we visited their original location traveling from Boston. We wanted to come back this year and discovered they had opened this much larger (well deserved) beautiful location. As expected the staff was delightful and the food was delicious. The green sauce for the chilaquiles has a little kick to it but it is perfect!
google avatar

Petra V.

Yelp
It is a bit hard to get used to the new location for those of us who get emotionally attached lol but such a great thing for them to continue to grow! New location but the food is just as good as ever. The service is always great too, we were pretty cold because the air was hitting us directly and as soon as we let them know they moved the air away from us, appreciate it! The ambiance feels very welcoming, and they have nice music.
google avatar

Robert M.

Yelp
Food was fantastic, we shared the steak and shrimp fajitas (beans & rice) a side of guac/ chips and two coconut tequila cocktails. We enjoyed the evening sharing our meal and chatting with the bar staff about the various menu options and had a few laughs. The staff is also very nice and attentive. We ended our night sharing the Presido margarita. The perfect meal on this waxing gibbous moon lit night.
google avatar

Tony R.

Yelp
I came on a Sunday took forever to be sat and there was 5 empty tables which makes no sense, I ordered chilaquiles and took about 45 min so I had to cancel it, my friends ate and I didn't. Jamaica was good but over priced for the smaller glass ever BUT our waitress Jazmin was the best! She was very friendly and very kind and she was nice! Wasn't her fault at all but 45 min for chilaquiles and two pozole's? That's crazy. I wouldn't come back
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
Awesome brunch today @ Presido Cocina. Had the Huevos Rancheros and my guest had a fried fish burrito. My Huevos Rancheros had beans, scrambled eggs over a tostada. It was very delicious. Tried some of the fried fish and it was very fresh and green cilantro salsa went perfect with it. Very nice family owned restaurant with a small cozy patio with plenty of shade. This place does get busy for brunch of Sunday. The coffee was brewed fresh and mild and smooth. Service was very friendly, prompt, and attentive. Great way to spend some time and have a delicious brunch in Downtown Phoenix.
google avatar

Chris T.

Yelp
We stopped in here because my daughter really wanted some elotes. The food was great and made fresh. My daughter had a dish that eat fried tacos that had potatoes cooked inside and cheese topped with carne asada with rice, beans, and guacamole. My other daughter had a spicy carnitas torta with fries. I had the chicken burrito. We enjoyed our meal. I ordered the flan....,BABY the Flan is freaking the best!!!! Smooth and Please get the flan Customer service was great and the location is nice and clean. I appreciate how nice our server was very nice. They do offer outdoor seating. Parking is in front or back. If you park in the front be prepared to back into traffic.
google avatar

Tiffany T.

Yelp
I was excited to try Presidio after reading the stellar reviews. First impression is that the place was fairly nice but on the smaller side. Staff were nice enough. Looking at the menu, I could tell that this was a more upscale establishment. Prices were higher than your average restaurant for this type of food--at least for what I'm used to (I'm not local). I was excited to try the food because it sounded delicious. Both of us were quite disappointed in the taste and quality of the food, especially for the price. It didn't stand out to me as unique, nor were the portions particularly large. Overall, I'd prefer to spend my time and money elsewhere.

Phaylinh S.

Yelp
Good food, nice atmosphere. I really enjoyed the agua chiles. Highly recommend the chicharron tacos
google avatar

Elkin D.

Yelp
The food is really good, for me they have the best chile verde ! Chilaquiles are my wife favorite they are also very good. The music is just amazing, if you are an 80s Hispanic era you will heard all the old good songs. The only hard part is the parking lot is really small.
google avatar

Norris B.

Yelp
The six of us went for a late lunch and had a wonderful experience. We were promptly seated and the server was polite and attended to us very well. The atmosphere was perfect for us to catch up and enjoy the Tex Mex experience for us Floridians. We order chips with salsa and guacamole to start. The guac was excellent, freshly made. The salsas were spicy and flavorful. The group ordered mostly a variety of tacos, all of them very good. I ordered a chicken tamale and chicken enchilada (based on a Yelp review) and it was delicious. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Erin D.

Yelp
My friend loves this place and I can see why. The staff is super friendly and kind. The atmosphere is low-key. The drinks - I had the Tequila Spritz - are delicious! The carne asada lunch portion was the perfect amount of food. The meat was melt-in-your good. Everything else was delicious too. My friend loves their enchiladas and raves about them. I love everything about this place!
google avatar

Rebecca S.

Yelp
Highly recommended this new location of an outstanding valley restaurant. We were greeted right away and sat within a few minutes. Prompt service. My husband and I ordered a queso fundido cheese dip appetizer/corn tortillas, carne asada plate, pollo taco, and the tres leches cake (dessert to go). When I say ALL of it was fantastic, I mean it was all fresh with so much flavor. Service from everyone we interacted with was excellent. Location was very clean and new. Can't wait to try their other dishes! Parking was limited, but the waitress did say there was more space on the south side of the building.
google avatar

Katalina I.

Yelp
I was not a big fan of the cochinita pibil. You get a mouthful of whatever spice they use but it doesn't taste good and I could not finish it unfortunately. The flour tortillas are for sure better than the corn ones. The rice was bland. I did like the queso fundido a lot, it was the best part of my meal. My friends did enjoy the tacos and enchiladas but I just was not a fan of the food. The service was very friendly and quick. They played good music and they have a narrow dining area with a lot of seating. This place also has an outside patio. Parking is scarce up front but they have paring in the rear too.
google avatar

Vanessa A.

Yelp
This has become a once a week visit, at least. I seem to mostly order the chicken enchiladas, steak and eggs, or the chicharrón tacos. The place is decorated nicely and the ambience is great. Drinks - we get the Tequila Spritz. So delicious! We have had the cantarritos, which are yum, also! Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Kimberly T.

Yelp
Chips and guac is delicious. But oh emm gee the Birria tacos are delicious!! Must try!! So much flavor! Service is a little slow for a small place, but the food is worth the wait! Definitely try if you are in the area!!
google avatar

Richard F.

Yelp
"ANOTHER AMAZING EXPERIENCE!" I brought my family here, knowing that they would like it and I was right. Everybody enjoyed their food. We all had a great time. Customer service was great yet again and honestly, I would keep coming back because the food is consistent. Portions are well and you can taste the homemade quality.
google avatar

Ava F.

Yelp
Pretty good spot for some enchiladas, decided to get both types of sauces. They are a little spicy but a good amount to me as someone who enjoys spice. I would recommend if you are in the downtown Phoenix area. Only negatives are chips are not free (understandable) and parking in the front is a little tricky as it's right on a main drag

Colleen B.

Yelp
The food is so flavorful. The staff was polite and helpful with my drink order. 10 of 10 stars
google avatar

Lindsay D.

Yelp
The food was really great. I got the huevos rancheros and even though it wasn't the prettiest plate from our group it was very tasty. The prettiest plate went to my friends chilaquiles and she loved it.
google avatar

Liliana A.

Yelp
Love their new location! It is so pretty and makes for a great date spot. Their food is honestly amazing and the service is always great!
google avatar

Kevin M.

Yelp
Really solid on all fronts. Food, service, prices, all really solid. Interior furniture and lay out makes feel more casual, but we didn't mind. Over all a great experience and can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Ed L.

Yelp
Our server was great. Nice but simple interior with half booths on one wall, a nice bar, and the rest of the space with basic tables and chairs. Sort of a pop-up feel. Chips were fresh, thin and hot. Salsa was good but stingy. The queso was good with spicy chorizo but otherwise a bit bland. The chicken fajitas were good but a bit greasy. The margarita was generous on the ice, a bit stingy on the margarita. Nice place with reasonable prices.
google avatar

Joshua R.

Yelp
Amazing food and excellent service. There was a bit of a wait, but that was just because there were so many people there at 11:45 on a Saturday it was hard to get a seat. Well worth the wait!
google avatar

Taylor C.

Yelp
The staff was super nice, the food was great, the prices were reasonable. I look forward to going back!

Jennifer R.

Yelp
I love the chilaquiles and fresh OJ! The location is small and a bit complicated for parking but overall love the food, drinks and the customer service is 10/10!
