18 Essential Mexican Restaurants in Phoenix

"Home-style Michoacán-influenced cooking is the premise at this comfy family-run restaurant housed in a midtown strip mall. Regulars swear by the breakfast menu, which includes chilaquiles and their own chorizo, but there are many standouts, including elote, enchiladas, juicy, crisp-edged carnitas, and cinnamon-dusted horchata." - Nikki Buchanan

How Houston Chefs Collaborate With Refugee Farmers to Produce Some of the City’s Best Dishes | Eater Houston

"I watch Chef Adam Dorris braise coils of baby bok choy in the juices of a beef chuck from a nearby cattle ranch, though before they wilt the bright greens and stems sizzle on a flat top as they await a special that pairs the bok choy with sweet potatoes and pureed sunchokes. Dorris has long sourced greens from the founding farmers of Plant It Forward Farms, and his menu reflects a deliberate commitment to keeping dishes local and seasonal — “I just kind of play jazz,” he says — using whatever is available. He opened Presidio in 2017 with Charles Bishop after leaving Pax Americana." - Cat Modlin-Jackson

Google
Presidio Cocina Mexicana has officially become one of my favorite go-to spots in Phoenix. They’ve moved to their new location just off 7th St, north of McDowell, and from the moment you walk in, you can feel the great energy and welcoming vibe. On my first visit, I ordered the trio fajitas with chicken, steak, and shrimp, served with rice, beans, and fresh tortillas. Everything was flavorful, but the steak stole the show so much so that I came back and ordered the steak fajitas on my second visit, and they were just as incredible. I also had their hibiscus drink (Jamaica), and it was perfectly balanced not too sweet, just how I like it. I wish I remembered the name of the gentleman who helped walk me through their tequila selection, but he was extremely knowledgeable. You can always tell a great spot by the tequila they serve and Presidio doesn’t disappoint. They don’t just serve the basic branded stuff. They carry real, quality tequilas that you’d find in top-tier spots in Mexico. If you’re craving delicious, authentic Mexican food with great service and a solid drink menu, I highly recommend Presidio Cocina Mexicana. I already know what I’m ordering next time the chilaquiles. Can’t wait to be back! #PresidioCocinaMexicana #PhoenixEats #MexicanFoodDoneRight #SupportLocalAZ

Really like the new place. Our waitress was super friendly as she walked us through the menu, her recommendations, and checked on us throughout the meal. It's a great atmosphere to just hang out and enjoy some good food. And yes, the food was good, really good, really really good.

Google
Was here the day they opened so I’m sure that influenced how well they were running. We waited 40 minutes for a table, after they told us it would be 25 minutes max. Ordered waters and fresh juice to start, staff was friendly if a bit frazzled. Had to ask for silverware. Ordered a corn dip to start it was fine not amazing. The entrees were 4/5 pretty good but they sent out 3 wrong items. Asked for no cilantro on 2 things and they both came covered in it. The corrected it, but some of our party was finished eating by the time the remade dishes came back. Still we had fun here and I’m sure they’re working out the kinks! I’d be back if I was in town again. My biggest issue was that the bathrooms suck. Tiny and only one stall each with barn doors which do not block sound… uncomfortable.

Finally decided to try this place since hearing so much about it. We were so excited but left disappointed. Our waitress Evelyn was awesome she really tried her best to keep her section happy but kitchen was so slow. Almost 30 min to get our food so she was nice enough to ask her manager if we could get another round of drinks which we did and we appreciate her for that. As you can see from our shared photos. The Carne asada plate was a joke. $20 for a tiny piece of meat with mostly fat, unflavorful rice and beans with a side of soggy lettuce, really? The tacos were not good at all either. Their pastor was mostly chewy fat, the chicken taco was dry and the fish taco was nothing better. Definitely will have to be a pass on this one. Off day? No excuse in our opinion. We do not recommend it.

The third time here , bad service , so many servers are walking around , like bees that don’t make honey .. we ordered guacamole, it was very plain no taste .. then the server recommended the seafood plate which came with pork in it .. seafood plate should never include pork.. I was disappointed!

Google
Good: New location on 7th street has a great atmosphere and wonderful service. The entire staff was warm and welcoming to me and my toddler. Diana was my server and she’s a very sweet young woman who attended to my every need! Food tasted good. The place is family friendly and the bathroom was clean had a changing table. Not so good: This place is a new location and they still have some things to work out. The menu lists dessert cocktails on the back page but if i had seen them on the frount page i would have ordered one. But by the time i saw it i already orderd beer. Many menu items are overpriced, however that is balanced by affordable menu items. $8 for elote is a good deal! $6 beer also decent price. Also i went in at 3pm hoping they had happy hour, no happy hour at this time.

Google
Great tasting Chilaquiles rojos for brunch ! Menudo is super good and absolutely delicious ! This new place is rocking the Mexican food scene and more than another TACO SHOP ! Stop by and see for yourself.

Google
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 – My Favorite Spot for Authentic Mexican Food! Presidio is hands down my favorite place for authentic Mexican food — and for good reason. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by the warmest, most attentive staff who made me feel right at home. The vibe of the restaurant is just as incredible as the food — the aesthetic is stunning! It’s got that perfect mix of cozy, vibrant, and stylish that makes you want to linger and savor every bite. Now, onto the food — absolutely phenomenal. I ordered the carne asada tacos, street corn, beans, rice, and a margarita, and everything was bursting with flavor. The carne asada was tender and seasoned perfectly, and the street corn had just the right amount of spice and sweetness. The margarita? Next-level refreshing. And don’t leave without trying the churro dessert with ice cream — it’s a must. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and paired with creamy ice cream that ties it all together beautifully. I can't say enough good things about this place. Amazing staff, amazing food, and a killer atmosphere. I’ll be back again and again!

Yelp
Everything is good at presidio Food , service and ambiance. Menudo on weekends is the best so far in the valley.

Yelp
The six of us went for a late lunch and had a wonderful experience. We were promptly seated and the server was polite and attended to us very well. The atmosphere was perfect for us to catch up and enjoy the Tex Mex experience for us Floridians. We order chips with salsa and guacamole to start. The guac was excellent, freshly made. The salsas were spicy and flavorful. The group ordered mostly a variety of tacos, all of them very good. I ordered a chicken tamale and chicken enchilada (based on a Yelp review) and it was delicious. I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
As usual I was traveling through Phoenix for the day and decided to find some goo, but authentic Southwest Mexican food to eat. So my business partner and I relied on the Yelp reviews to lead us here. The outside doesn't look like much but once inside it's transformed into a finer dining Mexican restaurant. The servers are friendly and helpful and the A/C works great! No alcohol for us since we were on the clock but the bar sure looked inviting. Started with chips and guacamole that was really good. Loved that the chips were hot and homemade. My buddy had the fajitas and said they tasted good. I had the dinner enchiladas and really liked them. I was slightly surprised that my enchiladas were only warm and not hot. That led a slightly lower score. The flan was outstanding. Overall a great place and I would come back again!

Yelp
I feel like brunch spots have a difficult time deciding whether or not they want the food to look good OR taste good, but luckily Presidio Cocina can do both! I often find that trendy brunch spots are overpriced and the food doesn't fit the bill, but the tacos (tinga, chorizo, and (iirc) pork) and the tres leches French toast were soooo good. We also had ceviche and aguachiles (which were both okay), but the chicharron was delicious. The taco meats were all uniquely seasoned and garnished perfectly, but it was so much I was full by my third taco! Although I had a delightful experience, I do have two things to mention: the service was a little bit odd, our server had a difficult time splitting the bill among the table. And we ordered a mimosa flight, but didn't receive a "flight." Typically when you order a flight of any kind of drink, you expect small glasses of different flavors or qualities, but at this restaurant, they let you pick two flavors of juice and bring you a bottle of champagne. It wasn't bad, it was just confusing. And a little bit disappointing that we only got to choose from two juices (lol). Overall, it was a great experience and I'd totally bring folks in again for a round 2.

Yelp
Everything was top notch and tasted wonderful! I had the chicken enchiladas with red sauce, very savory. Green chile chicken tamale was very good, spicy sauce which I enjoyed. Beans are very authentic, loved them! I'm not used to yellow rice but I really loved them too. Will definitely be back!!

Yelp
Had to give this place another try after my daughter raved about it. Glad we did, so much better than the first time we came and everything tasted amazing. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The aguas were very good and so was the desserts. We enjoyed everything we ate even the menudo. My mother is very picky but she loved it. They do get busy so I would suggest getting a reservation if not be prepared to wait. Restrooms were cleaned

Yelp
Wasn't easy to find but the restaurant but it was clean. Inside felt nice and cool. And they had a cute bar. Food was great. Service was friendly as well to us. We always thank workers that are nice to our toddler. Decent music too. We ordered Chips and salsa, Mole and Build tacos. Private lot on the side.

Yelp
Stopped in for brunch today and decided to do a lunch item instead of my usual sweet. I got the Tinga tostadas and literally almost licked my plate clean. They were so good. It's rare to find Tinga done correctly in Phoenix. Most are dry and no chipotle or onion flavor. These were a great portion for the price and might just be my new order going forward every time we visit. Service as usual was terrific and we timed it perfect going at 10am because as we were leaving the Sunday post church crowd was showing up and there would've been a solid wait
google avatar

Yelp
Food was fantastic, we shared the steak and shrimp fajitas (beans & rice) a side of guac/ chips and two coconut tequila cocktails. We enjoyed the evening sharing our meal and chatting with the bar staff about the various menu options and had a few laughs. The staff is also very nice and attentive. We ended our night sharing the Presido margarita. The perfect meal on this waxing gibbous moon lit night.

Yelp
Checked this spot out for lunch which visiting a friend in Arizona. Wow!! Their breakfast is delicious. There's limited parking in the front, but a ton in the back. The servers are all very attentive and sweet. Got their huevos rancheros and it was so delicious. I was able to substitute the beans for rice. The dish was so flavorful! They have a ton on different stuff on their menu and I believe they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner all day. Their dessert menu sounded good but I was so full. Their sweets are baked fresh.

Yelp
If your menu features Queso Fundido it's pretty hard to get anything less than 4 stars from me. Presidio Cocina Mexicana's (PCM) big menu features Queso Fundido and it was the perfect remedy to the Budget Rental Car nightmare that preceded my coming here. In fact, I'd left the airport so hungry and agitated that I might've asked Siri to find me the "nearest Queso Fundido"; it's difficult to say how I wound up choosing PCM. Like almost every Arizona eatery, PCM features a full array of alcohol. The bottles are lined up attractively but the food menu is of greater interest. Breakfast is served all day, but the menu goes far beyond mere breakfast. Meals run in the $15-$20 range and though I often prefer a cheap taqueria for Mexican fare, this - food, service, and ambiance - was a very nice experience. In addition to a shared Queso Fundido (excellent, accompanied by chips & salsa and/or tortillas) I ordered Chilaquiles and sampled the tacos. Chilaquiles were lovely in presentation, with half doused in red sauce and the other half doused in green, and benefited significantly from an added splash of salsa. Tacos? Equally enjoyable but I admit to having wandering eyes. A man at a nearby table ordered Fajitas and they looked so enticing that I had to inquire "as good as they look?" to which I received a positive affirmation. So next time it's the Fajitas and the Queso Fundido. Not too far from the Phoenix Airport, PCM is a great choice not only for those times when it takes forever to secure a rental car.

Yelp
It is a bit hard to get used to the new location for those of us who get emotionally attached lol but such a great thing for them to continue to grow! New location but the food is just as good as ever. The service is always great too, we were pretty cold because the air was hitting us directly and as soon as we let them know they moved the air away from us, appreciate it! The ambiance feels very welcoming, and they have nice music.
google avatar

Lindsay D.

Yelp
The food was really great. I got the huevos rancheros and even though it wasn't the prettiest plate from our group it was very tasty. The prettiest plate went to my friends chilaquiles and she loved it.
google avatar

Az E.

Yelp
Shux! We loved this place food is becoming sweet like every other restaurant! They have change their recipe on a lot of their dishes extremely extremely sweet nothing had flavor, It was tasteless. We had to add so much salt to our dishes. It'll be a while before we return, and we are regulars.
google avatar

Elkin D.

Yelp
The food is really good, for me they have the best chile verde ! Chilaquiles are my wife favorite they are also very good. The music is just amazing, if you are an 80s Hispanic era you will heard all the old good songs. The only hard part is the parking lot is really small.
google avatar

Yelp
Hands down best Mexican food in Phoenix from start to finish. Do yourself a favor and do not skip out on the flan and margaritas. You're not ready!

Yelp
Love their new location! It is so pretty and makes for a great date spot. Their food is honestly amazing and the service is always great!

Yelp
Presidio serves delicious homemade Mexican cuisine. They specialize in Michoacán-inspired Mexican homestyle cooking. It's a family-owned and operated business that's run by the Nava family. The restaurant offers a menu of made-from-scratch dishes, most of them based on old family recipes refined by Nava's mother, Lucina, a native of the west-central Mexican state of Michoacán. On my first visit, my family and I tried their Cilantro Lime Salad w/ grilled chicken, Torta Ahogada w/ Cochinita Pibil, Chicken Enchiladas, and a refreshing cocktail whose name escapes me right now. The food from its presentation to taste was really flavorful and good. It was fresh and tasty. Also, the service was pretty good. We enjoyed our meal and had a good experience. Check them out when in Phoenix. Presidio worth a visit and more.

Yelp
This has become a once a week visit, at least. I seem to mostly order the chicken enchiladas, steak and eggs, or the chicharrón tacos. The place is decorated nicely and the ambience is great. Drinks - we get the Tequila Spritz. So delicious! We have had the cantarritos, which are yum, also! Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Awesome brunch today @ Presido Cocina. Had the Huevos Rancheros and my guest had a fried fish burrito. My Huevos Rancheros had beans, scrambled eggs over a tostada. It was very delicious. Tried some of the fried fish and it was very fresh and green cilantro salsa went perfect with it. Very nice family owned restaurant with a small cozy patio with plenty of shade. This place does get busy for brunch of Sunday. The coffee was brewed fresh and mild and smooth. Service was very friendly, prompt, and attentive. Great way to spend some time and have a delicious brunch in Downtown Phoenix.
google avatar

Chris T.

Yelp
We stopped in here because my daughter really wanted some elotes. The food was great and made fresh. My daughter had a dish that eat fried tacos that had potatoes cooked inside and cheese topped with carne asada with rice, beans, and guacamole. My other daughter had a spicy carnitas torta with fries. I had the chicken burrito. We enjoyed our meal. I ordered the flan....,BABY the Flan is freaking the best!!!! Smooth and Please get the flan Customer service was great and the location is nice and clean. I appreciate how nice our server was very nice. They do offer outdoor seating. Parking is in front or back. If you park in the front be prepared to back into traffic.
google avatar

Tiffany T.

Yelp
I was excited to try Presidio after reading the stellar reviews. First impression is that the place was fairly nice but on the smaller side. Staff were nice enough. Looking at the menu, I could tell that this was a more upscale establishment. Prices were higher than your average restaurant for this type of food--at least for what I'm used to (I'm not local). I was excited to try the food because it sounded delicious. Both of us were quite disappointed in the taste and quality of the food, especially for the price. It didn't stand out to me as unique, nor were the portions particularly large. Overall, I'd prefer to spend my time and money elsewhere.
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
Every experience has been nothing less than perfect! Food, drinks and service are all spot on
google avatar

Rebecca S.

Yelp
Highly recommended this new location of an outstanding valley restaurant. We were greeted right away and sat within a few minutes. Prompt service. My husband and I ordered a queso fundido cheese dip appetizer/corn tortillas, carne asada plate, pollo taco, and the tres leches cake (dessert to go). When I say ALL of it was fantastic, I mean it was all fresh with so much flavor. Service from everyone we interacted with was excellent. Location was very clean and new. Can't wait to try their other dishes! Parking was limited, but the waitress did say there was more space on the south side of the building.
google avatar

Erin D.

Yelp
My friend loves this place and I can see why. The staff is super friendly and kind. The atmosphere is low-key. The drinks - I had the Tequila Spritz - are delicious! The carne asada lunch portion was the perfect amount of food. The meat was melt-in-your good. Everything else was delicious too. My friend loves their enchiladas and raves about them. I love everything about this place!
google avatar

Katalina I.

Yelp
I was not a big fan of the cochinita pibil. You get a mouthful of whatever spice they use but it doesn't taste good and I could not finish it unfortunately. The flour tortillas are for sure better than the corn ones. The rice was bland. I did like the queso fundido a lot, it was the best part of my meal. My friends did enjoy the tacos and enchiladas but I just was not a fan of the food. The service was very friendly and quick. They played good music and they have a narrow dining area with a lot of seating. This place also has an outside patio. Parking is scarce up front but they have paring in the rear too.
google avatar

Kevin M.

Yelp
Really solid on all fronts. Food, service, prices, all really solid. Interior furniture and lay out makes feel more casual, but we didn't mind. Over all a great experience and can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Ana P.

Yelp
I grew up with authentic Mexican cooking in my home and this is the closest place I've gotten to that while living in Phoenix. The drinks deliver and so does the food, not disappointed with paying this bill in the least. Will be back soon. We got the fluatas, chilaquiles and queso fundido.
google avatar

Melanie M.

Yelp
We started with margaritas and their queso, and wow.Out of this world! The queso was real, melty cheese served in a sizzling cast iron dish, absolutely delicious. For the main course, we had tacos and the chile rellenos, and as New Mexicans, we can confidently say these are the best we've had since being back home. Every bite was flavorful and fresh. Do yourself a favor and try this place.
google avatar

Steve R.

Yelp
I don't know if I have ever posted a negative review of a restaurant before. I trusted yelp to find an upscale Mexican restaurant for a nice meal and this was an exceptionally underwhelming experience. I actually stopped at a Taqueria on the way back to the hotel to get some food.
google avatar

Kimberly T.

Yelp
Chips and guac is delicious. But oh emm gee the Birria tacos are delicious!! Must try!! So much flavor! Service is a little slow for a small place, but the food is worth the wait! Definitely try if you are in the area!!
google avatar

Ava F.

Yelp
Pretty good spot for some enchiladas, decided to get both types of sauces. They are a little spicy but a good amount to me as someone who enjoys spice. I would recommend if you are in the downtown Phoenix area. Only negatives are chips are not free (understandable) and parking in the front is a little tricky as it's right on a main drag
google avatar

Joshua R.

Yelp
Amazing food and excellent service. There was a bit of a wait, but that was just because there were so many people there at 11:45 on a Saturday it was hard to get a seat. Well worth the wait!
google avatar

Carol M.

Yelp
I'm not from the area but anytime I visit, I always try to make a stop here. I used to think that all fajita plates plates tasted the same but this place changed my mind!! Their fajita lunch plate is so delicious and definitely ask for their salsa -- I love spicy food and their salsa is extra spicy with a nice little kick (of tamarind?). The staff is always very friendly and welcoming. I've only been here during lunchtime but every time I've been here it's always been a nice vibe. My mom really likes their wedding cookies too! I usually buy some extra cookies to bring home to SoCal with me
google avatar

Richard F.

Yelp
"ANOTHER AMAZING EXPERIENCE!" I brought my family here, knowing that they would like it and I was right. Everybody enjoyed their food. We all had a great time. Customer service was great yet again and honestly, I would keep coming back because the food is consistent. Portions are well and you can taste the homemade quality.
google avatar

Ed L.

Yelp
Our server was great. Nice but simple interior with half booths on one wall, a nice bar, and the rest of the space with basic tables and chairs. Sort of a pop-up feel. Chips were fresh, thin and hot. Salsa was good but stingy. The queso was good with spicy chorizo but otherwise a bit bland. The chicken fajitas were good but a bit greasy. The margarita was generous on the ice, a bit stingy on the margarita. Nice place with reasonable prices.
google avatar

Robert P.

Yelp
Favorite Mexican restaurant for all of our friends. Best margaritas in phoenix. Excellent
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
I love the chilaquiles and fresh OJ! The location is small and a bit complicated for parking but overall love the food, drinks and the customer service is 10/10!
google avatar

Jeannine S.

Yelp
Great food, good and efficient service, surprisingly just very ok horchata. I saw the "best horchata" sign when coming out of the restroom so I added one on to my lunch. It was meh. Must have been an old best of award. Pros 1. Fresh food - good fish taco with fresh toppings 2. Quick lunch service 3. Easy parking in back Cons 1. Very greasy carne asada taco that I didn't eat past one bite because I was afraid all that oil would land me on the toilet and I had dinner plans with a friend that evening 2. Horchata was just rice milk with some cinnamon sprinkled on top. Nothing special and wouldn't order again.
google avatar

Yelp
The food was delicious and the service was excellent and inviting they make you feel like your at home. A great time and great food

Chris K.

Yelp
The service here is great, and the food is even better. I just had the enchiladas, and they were amazing. The guacamole is fresh made and stellar. I will definitely be back here whenever I'm in the area.

Jackie C.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in town. The chile verde is amazing and my boyfriend said the carne asada plate is one of the best he's ever had. Always a great experience and nice atmosphere

Yelp
We've been coming to this restaurant for years and have never had anything less than a five-star experience. The food is always incredible--fresh, authentic, and consistently delicious. The service is warm and attentive, the ambience inviting, and the drinks top-notch. We were so excited to hear they've opened a second location, and even happier to find the same outstanding quality and flavors we've loved for years. This is hands-down one of our favorite places to eat!

Yelp
Recently came with my lunch group of nine, and I must say everyone was delighted. The atmosphere was great, the service good, and the food was all absolutely delicious! I would definitely recommend!

Yelp
The food, drinks, service was beyond amazing!!! It is a small restaurant that makes you feel at home. Madonna was our server and she was amazing, and gave the perfect suggestion. 100% coming back!!

Yelp
I ordered the 3 tacos, my favorite was the cochinita pibil, I think one of the best I've ever had. The tortillas were your typical yellow corn tortillas. do think that for a $5 taco the tortillas should be a bit more on the authentic side. I know that competitors in the area serve better quality tortilla at a cheaper price per taco. Something to consider, but overall tasty. The inside was clear and inviting, their tequila bottle display is neat. Good lunch spot if you're in the area.

Charlene G.

Yelp
We had an amazing dining experience. The service was perfect - Sergio's masterful bartending turned out the perfect margaritas. Simply tequila, juice and agave. They were refreshing after a day of travel. Sergio was attentive and engaging. The food was fresh and well prepared! Our order included: fish tacos, chicken enchilada, and chicken fajitas. All ingredients were fresh and the presentation was inviting. For us, the emphasis on tasty, well prepared food was a plus. The ambiance was clean and modern. Also, I want to mention Jenifer. She attended to us as well; she was warm and provided another positive. Would we return....absolutely!!

Yelp
When visiting a new city, we always look to find good restaurants to try..this one did not disappoint!
