18 Essential Mexican Restaurants in Phoenix

"Home-style Michoacán-influenced cooking is the premise at this comfy family-run restaurant housed in a midtown strip mall. Regulars swear by the breakfast menu, which includes chilaquiles and their own chorizo, but there are many standouts, including elote, enchiladas, juicy, crisp-edged carnitas, and cinnamon-dusted horchata." - Nikki Buchanan

Finally decided to try this place since hearing so much about it. We were so excited but left disappointed. Our waitress Evelyn was awesome she really tried her best to keep her section happy but kitchen was so slow. Almost 30 min to get our food so she was nice enough to ask her manager if we could get another round of drinks which we did and we appreciate her for that. As you can see from our shared photos. The Carne asada plate was a joke. $20 for a tiny piece of meat with mostly fat, unflavorful rice and beans with a side of soggy lettuce, really? The tacos were not good at all either. Their pastor was mostly chewy fat, the chicken taco was dry and the fish taco was nothing better. Definitely will have to be a pass on this one. Off day? No excuse in our opinion. We do not recommend it.

I was not a big fan of the cochinita pibil. You get a mouthful of whatever spice they use but it doesn't taste good and I could not finish it unfortunately. The flour tortillas are for sure better than the corn ones. The rice was bland. I did like the queso fundido a lot, it was the best part of my meal. My friends did enjoy the tacos and enchiladas but I just was not a fan of the food. The service was very friendly and quick. They played good music and they have a narrow dining area with a lot of seating. This place also has an outside patio. Parking is scarce up front but they have parking in the back too.

Good: New location on 7th street has a great atmosphere and wonderful service. The entire staff was warm and welcoming to me and my toddler. Diana was my server and she’s a very sweet young woman who attended to my every need! Food tasted good. The place is family friendly and the bathroom was clean had a changing table. Not so good: This place is a new location and they still have some things to work out. The menu lists dessert cocktails on the back page but if i had seen them on the frount page i would have ordered one. But by the time i saw it i already orderd beer. Many menu items are overpriced, however that is balanced by affordable menu items. $8 for elote is a good deal! $6 beer also decent price. Also i went in at 3pm hoping they had happy hour, no happy hour at this time.

Today, was the first time I've been to Presidio. I went to the location on 7th Street. The place is comfortable, & clean. Our server was polite, and the food was more than what I expected. I will be back soon. I'm impressed. Thank You 👍

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 – My Favorite Spot for Authentic Mexican Food! Presidio is hands down my favorite place for authentic Mexican food — and for good reason. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by the warmest, most attentive staff who made me feel right at home. The vibe of the restaurant is just as incredible as the food — the aesthetic is stunning! It’s got that perfect mix of cozy, vibrant, and stylish that makes you want to linger and savor every bite. Now, onto the food — absolutely phenomenal. I ordered the carne asada tacos, street corn, beans, rice, and a margarita, and everything was bursting with flavor. The carne asada was tender and seasoned perfectly, and the street corn had just the right amount of spice and sweetness. The margarita? Next-level refreshing. And don’t leave without trying the churro dessert with ice cream — it’s a must. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and paired with creamy ice cream that ties it all together beautifully. I can't say enough good things about this place. Amazing staff, amazing food, and a killer atmosphere. I’ll be back again and again!

Google
Came here to try out my friend's favorite restaurant, and they did not disappoint. All the food we had here was excellent, the location was clean and pleasant to be in, and Juan was incredibly personable and timely. The servers seemed happy and the food was homemade, and while not the cheapest food in town it absolutely is well worth the cost and punches above its weight in quality.

Presidio Cocina Mexicana is a great spot for flavorful food and refreshing drinks. The margaritas were spot-on—cool, crisp, and refreshing. The horchata was also excellent, with a rich, authentic taste that wasn’t watered down. The food was fantastic all around, but the Birria Tacos are a must-try—absolutely packed with flavor. The pozole came in a generous portion and was perfectly seasoned. While parking is limited in front of the restaurant, there's plenty of free parking just behind the building. I’d definitely recommend this place for anyone craving delicious, authentic Mexican food in a laid-back setting.

If you’re looking for authentic Mexican cuisine paired with top-notch customer service, look no further! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm smiles and genuine hospitality that instantly made us feel welcome. The food? Absolutely incredible. Every dish was bursting with flavor—from the perfectly seasoned mole (best mole ever) and tender carne asada to the rich, creamy queso fundido that tasted freshly made to order. You can really tell they use high quality ingredients and traditional recipes that have been perfected over time. The portions were generous, and everything came out hot and beautifully presented. What really sets this place apart, though, is the service. The staff went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. They were attentive without being intrusive, knowledgeable about the menu, and truly passionate about what they do. Whether you’re craving a casual taco night or celebrating something special, this restaurant hits every mark. We left full, happy, and already planning our next visit. Highly, highly recommend!

Yelp
This has become a once a week visit, at least. I seem to mostly order the chicken enchiladas, steak and eggs, or the chicharrón tacos. The place is decorated nicely and the ambience is great. Drinks - we get the Tequila Spritz. So delicious! We have had the cantarritos, which are yum, also! Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Checked this spot out for lunch which visiting a friend in Arizona. Wow!! Their breakfast is delicious. There's limited parking in the front, but a ton in the back. The servers are all very attentive and sweet. Got their huevos rancheros and it was so delicious. I was able to substitute the beans for rice. The dish was so flavorful! They have a ton on different stuff on their menu and I believe they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner all day. Their dessert menu sounded good but I was so full. Their sweets are baked fresh.

Yelp
Highly recommended this new location of an outstanding valley restaurant. We were greeted right away and sat within a few minutes. Prompt service. My husband and I ordered a queso fundido cheese dip appetizer/corn tortillas, carne asada plate, pollo taco, and the tres leches cake (dessert to go). When I say ALL of it was fantastic, I mean it was all fresh with so much flavor. Service from everyone we interacted with was excellent. Location was very clean and new. Can't wait to try their other dishes! Parking was limited, but the waitress did say there was more space on the south side of the building.

Yelp
Really solid on all fronts. Food, service, prices, all really solid. Interior furniture and lay out makes feel more casual, but we didn't mind. Over all a great experience and can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Love their new location! It is so pretty and makes for a great date spot. Their food is honestly amazing and the service is always great!

Yelp
If your menu features Queso Fundido it's pretty hard to get anything less than 4 stars from me. Presidio Cocina Mexicana's (PCM) big menu features Queso Fundido and it was the perfect remedy to the Budget Rental Car nightmare that preceded my coming here. In fact, I'd left the airport so hungry and agitated that I might've asked Siri to find me the "nearest Queso Fundido"; it's difficult to say how I wound up choosing PCM. Like almost every Arizona eatery, PCM features a full array of alcohol. The bottles are lined up attractively but the food menu is of greater interest. Breakfast is served all day, but the menu goes far beyond mere breakfast. Meals run in the $15-$20 range and though I often prefer a cheap taqueria for Mexican fare, this - food, service, and ambiance - was a very nice experience. In addition to a shared Queso Fundido (excellent, accompanied by chips & salsa and/or tortillas) I ordered Chilaquiles and sampled the tacos. Chilaquiles were lovely in presentation, with half doused in red sauce and the other half doused in green, and benefited significantly from an added splash of salsa. Tacos? Equally enjoyable but I admit to having wandering eyes. A man at a nearby table ordered Fajitas and they looked so enticing that I had to inquire "as good as they look?" to which I received a positive affirmation. So next time it's the Fajitas and the Queso Fundido. Not too far from the Phoenix Airport, PCM is a great choice not only for those times when it takes forever to secure a rental car.

Yelp
Amazing food and excellent service. There was a bit of a wait, but that was just because there were so many people there at 11:45 on a Saturday it was hard to get a seat. Well worth the wait!

Yelp
Awesome brunch today @ Presido Cocina. Had the Huevos Rancheros and my guest had a fried fish burrito. My Huevos Rancheros had beans, scrambled eggs over a tostada. It was very delicious. Tried some of the fried fish and it was very fresh and green cilantro salsa went perfect with it. Very nice family owned restaurant with a small cozy patio with plenty of shade. This place does get busy for brunch of Sunday. The coffee was brewed fresh and mild and smooth. Service was very friendly, prompt, and attentive. Great way to spend some time and have a delicious brunch in Downtown Phoenix.

Yelp
Took my Dad for breakfast before he headed home. We had a terrific meal. The coffee here is amazing especially the Mexican mocha. I had the tres leches French toast which was incredible. My wife had the pozole which had the perfect spice. We look forward to coming back soon

Yelp
Presidio serves delicious homemade Mexican cuisine. They specialize in Michoacán-inspired Mexican homestyle cooking. It's a family-owned and operated business that's run by the Nava family. The restaurant offers a menu of made-from-scratch dishes, most of them based on old family recipes refined by Nava's mother, Lucina, a native of the west-central Mexican state of Michoacán. On my first visit, my family and I tried their Cilantro Lime Salad w/ grilled chicken, Torta Ahogada w/ Cochinita Pibil, Chicken Enchiladas, and a refreshing cocktail whose name escapes me right now. The food from its presentation to taste was really flavorful and good. It was fresh and tasty. Also, the service was pretty good. We enjoyed our meal and had a good experience. Check them out when in Phoenix. Presidio worth a visit and more.

Yelp
My friend loves this place and I can see why. The staff is super friendly and kind. The atmosphere is low-key. The drinks - I had the Tequila Spritz - are delicious! The carne asada lunch portion was the perfect amount of food. The meat was melt-in-your good. Everything else was delicious too. My friend loves their enchiladas and raves about them. I love everything about this place!

Yelp
I love the chilaquiles and fresh OJ! The location is small and a bit complicated for parking but overall love the food, drinks and the customer service is 10/10!

Alexia Marie S.

Yelp
Presidio is our favorite restaurant in the valley! They have never disappointed with their delicious food, in particular, our favorites have to be the carne asada plate and street corn! Service has always been great, and Melissa has remembered us time and time again, making us feel very welcomed! 10/10 every time!

Yelp
We stopped in here because my daughter really wanted some elotes. The food was great and made fresh. My daughter had a dish that eat fried tacos that had potatoes cooked inside and cheese topped with carne asada with rice, beans, and guacamole. My other daughter had a spicy carnitas torta with fries. I had the chicken burrito. We enjoyed our meal. I ordered the flan....,BABY the Flan is freaking the best!!!! Smooth and Please get the flan Customer service was great and the location is nice and clean. I appreciate how nice our server was very nice. They do offer outdoor seating. Parking is in front or back. If you park in the front be prepared to back into traffic.

Yelp
Pretty good spot for some enchiladas, decided to get both types of sauces. They are a little spicy but a good amount to me as someone who enjoys spice. I would recommend if you are in the downtown Phoenix area. Only negatives are chips are not free (understandable) and parking in the front is a little tricky as it's right on a main drag

Yelp
I was excited to try Presidio after reading the stellar reviews. First impression is that the place was fairly nice but on the smaller side. Staff were nice enough. Looking at the menu, I could tell that this was a more upscale establishment. Prices were higher than your average restaurant for this type of food--at least for what I'm used to (I'm not local). I was excited to try the food because it sounded delicious. Both of us were quite disappointed in the taste and quality of the food, especially for the price. It didn't stand out to me as unique, nor were the portions particularly large. Overall, I'd prefer to spend my time and money elsewhere.
google avatar

Ed L.

Yelp
Our server was great. Nice but simple interior with half booths on one wall, a nice bar, and the rest of the space with basic tables and chairs. Sort of a pop-up feel. Chips were fresh, thin and hot. Salsa was good but stingy. The queso was good with spicy chorizo but otherwise a bit bland. The chicken fajitas were good but a bit greasy. The margarita was generous on the ice, a bit stingy on the margarita. Nice place with reasonable prices.

Yelp
Chips and guac is delicious. But oh emm gee the Birria tacos are delicious!! Must try!! So much flavor! Service is a little slow for a small place, but the food is worth the wait! Definitely try if you are in the area!!

Yelp

Yelp
"ANOTHER AMAZING EXPERIENCE!" I brought my family here, knowing that they would like it and I was right. Everybody enjoyed their food. We all had a great time. Customer service was great yet again and honestly, I would keep coming back because the food is consistent. Portions are well and you can taste the homemade quality.

Yelp
Great food, good and efficient service, surprisingly just very ok horchata. I saw the "best horchata" sign when coming out of the restroom so I added one on to my lunch. It was meh. Must have been an old best of award. Pros 1. Fresh food - good fish taco with fresh toppings 2. Quick lunch service 3. Easy parking in back Cons 1. Very greasy carne asada taco that I didn't eat past one bite because I was afraid all that oil would land me on the toilet and I had dinner plans with a friend that evening 2. Horchata was just rice milk with some cinnamon sprinkled on top. Nothing special and wouldn't order again.
google avatar

Aysha S.

Yelp
Omg 10/10 The food and service was magnífico I had the lunch taquitos to go. The food was warm and delicious when I got home. And I only waited about 10-15mins for my order with fork and delicious salsas in the bag. I had help from Asef and Sergio who were the sweetest and kindest. Definitely going back!! Thank you Presidio Cocina! P.s the place was clean, aesthetic and had great energy. I loved it
google avatar

Luciana V.

Yelp
I ordered the 3 tacos, my favorite was the cochinita pibil, I think one of the best I've ever had. The tortillas were your typical yellow corn tortillas. do think that for a $5 taco the tortillas should be a bit more on the authentic side. I know that competitors in the area serve better quality tortilla at a cheaper price per taco. Something to consider, but overall tasty. The inside was clear and inviting, their tequila bottle display is neat. Good lunch spot if you're in the area.

Yelp
The food, drinks, service was beyond amazing!!! It is a small restaurant that makes you feel at home. Madonna was our server and she was amazing, and gave the perfect suggestion. 100% coming back!!

Alfie O.

Yelp
Went in with my wife and brother and was not disappointed! The food was phenomenal and the service was even better ! Deseraye was absolutely incredible and gave amazing recommendations to what we should order. The restaurant was super busy it seemed but she communicated with us the entire time making it a pleasant experience! Drinks 10/10. Food 10/10. Service 11/10! Will be back!
google avatar

Katie Y.

Yelp
I absolutely loved this little Mexican spot. The tortilla chips came out warm and fresh with the salsa. The birria tacos were absolutely delicious. Might be the best Mexican rice I've ever had. Pollo and shrimp tacos were also fantastic. Service a little slow, but loved this spot.

Greg S.

Yelp
4.00 for Chips and Salsa WTF Carne Asada quality was poor No No No Portions Small 99.00 for what?

Yelp
FOR THE NEW LOCATION AT 7th St: We got here at 12pm for lunch, we were seated 12:06. Our order was not taken until 12:25 and thats only because I asked if anyone was going to take out order or offer us water. Our food did not come out until 12:55. This was just crazy. NO ONE CHECKED ON US. No water refills. No initial drink offering at the beginning. I saw the waiter go to our side and ask others how they were doing and never came to us.

Yelp

Yelp
The food and customer service were amazing! We went in Mother's Day and it was busy but we were able to be seating in a good timely manner.

Yelp
Service (Jose) was great; chips & salsa DELISH; & food was great! Nice new restaurant in former location of The Giving Tree!

Yelp
I've lived in Phoenix for 20 years and this is by far the best Mexican restaurant I've been to. Everything was fabulous drinks food service -highly recommend.

L S.

Yelp
Today I met a friend at Presidio. I chose it because of its central location and had never been there before. Carlos was our amazing server. He was attentive and recommended the chicharrones taco. I was skeptical, but he was emphatic...and absolutely correct! The street corn was also fantastic. I'm already planning to take my husband there next week.

Cameron S.

Yelp
This was the BEST Mexican food we have ever had. To drink we had the Purepecha and the Chamoy mule. We started with the totopos con chile (MUST HAVE), for our main we had tacos ranked in order of best (al pastor, chicharron, carne asada). They were so authentic and fresh. The rice and beans were out of this world. We also had the enchiladas which were so flavorful. For dessert we had the tres leches cake (MUST HAVE) and the churros. The ambiance of their new location was perfect. Evelyn was out server and she was so sweet and was the cherry on top of such an amazing night. I will be chasing the quality and flavors of this meal all over, but I know that the one place I can always count on is Presidio.

Lilia A.

Yelp
Omg!!! I'm so HAPPY Sra Lucy and her family have expanded their amazing restaurant to 7th St & Palm Ln. the new location is so open and airy. Ambience is wonderful. The food is still as authentic and delicious and ALWAYS. I feel like my MOM or ABUELA cooked !!! So if you are looking for REAL MEXICAN food this is the place!!! Save room for dessert... Churros are my favorite. They also have cappuccino and expresso if you like. Full bar with Beer Sangria and of course margaritas!!! One of my favorites is the Dirty Horchata. You will be back for sure. CHILE VERDE is to die for!!!
google avatar

Honey K.

Yelp
This was an amazing find. The chicharones was delicious to begin this review. Right crunch and flavorful. Worth coming back to. I would recommend an ice cold beer to match it. We ordered a few tacos and those were delicious too. We were told after we complimented our meal that they are actually known for their breakfast and we have to come and try that next time we come back to town.
google avatar

Jose M.

Yelp
ADDITIONAL PARKING IN BACK!! Probably the most important thing to know. Summary: all-in-all, excellent service, pretty good food. Definitely worth a try. There are 6 bar seats, open seating, 2 sets of 3. We walked in around 11am on Saturday. Luckily, little wait for us, which was nice. We had the chilaquiles and huevos rancheros. I liked the chilaquiles a little better but the huevos rancheros came with crispy potatoes mixed with chorizo, so I just mixed it all up. It was nice. Not too spicy. Actually, the spiciest thing was the Chocolate Mexicano!! My wife also bought wedding cookies to go. I believe they tasted good. Not my thing as they're normally too dry for me.
google avatar

Tracie O.

Yelp
I highly recommend this restaurant! I've been at least 5 times and every time the food has been excellent. Everyone I've taken here has been very impressed. The drinks are delicious. The food is delicious. The staff go out of their way to make sure everything is wonderful. Seriously top notch!
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
Absolutely fabulous dinner here on a Saturday night around 630 pm. I got three tacos and all were great (Al pastor was amazing!). My wife got steak fajitas that she loved. We also got chips and salsa. Chips were fresh and hot! We also got a side of street corn mmmmmm. Rice and beans were good too! Everything was fresh and our server was super helpful and nice. Great if not outstanding Mexican food!
google avatar

Gloria P.

Yelp
After seeing the high Yelp rating, I was excited to try this place. Pleasantly surprised that there was plenty of parking. They do not bring chips and salsa out, bummer. We ordered drinks, they were $12.48 each and not that good. The service was pretty slow, but that happens at a lot of places as everyone is understaffed. My friend and I agreed, the food was so so. It wasnt bad, it just wasnt anything special. There are so many wonderful Mexican food spots here, this isn't it.

Kassandra E.

Yelp
LOVE Presido. And the new location is gorgeous. The service was great - the staff is so nice - and the food is amazing (as always). The new spot has a great bar, and we can't wait to enjoy the patio as soon as the weather cools off!
google avatar

Jake K.

Yelp
I wasn't all that impressed with my experience. The chips, salsa, and guacamole were flavorful, but the other dishes fell short. My carne asada platter was a bit bland--the rice and beans lacked seasoning, and while the carne asada was cooked well, I was hoping for a more distinct flavor profile, maybe something marinated. Instead, it just tasted like salt and pepper were added, and that was it. The tres leches cake was pretty average; I've had better elsewhere. The service and ambiance were fine.
