Progeny: Top Peninsula Colombian Coffee Company Just Opened a San Francisco Cafe | Eater SF

"Owned by John Trabelsi and Maria Palacio, the couple opened their first San Francisco cafe on the first floor of the Landing with a quick turnaround and minimal changes to the space. The Palo Alto business — featured during the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards — didn’t make a Hope Hangar outpost work as reported in 2023, but Palacio and Trabelsi are working to open two other locations this year. The drinks program will include seasonal signature drinks (starting with mint mochas and blueberry lattes) with all syrups made in-house, and Goodmylk provides the cafe’s almond milk, which is described as gluten-free, bee-friendly, seed oil-free, free of chemicals, and female-founded. Down the road staff will roast the Colombian coffees on-site, led by coffee director Jesse Gonzalez, who “will handle all training, operations, and day-to-day.” Trabelsi emphasizes Gonzalez’s role: “It’s his moment,” Trabelsi says. “He’s worked so hard. It’s his time to shine.” Tea comes from Bay Area maker Mala Tara, and the grab-and-go section highlights minority- and impact-driven founders such as juices from Happy Moose and sodas and juices from Bayjoo and Live Waku. San Francisco bakers the French Spot and Elideli supply croissants, morning buns, and more. Because of location-specific licensing, wine and beer will be added later; the food offering will include items like onion soup and cheese platters, and food trucks will stop by on Friday nights starting in April. The cafe opens in an area with relatively little specialty coffee—Ikon Roastery opened at the end of 2022 and Neighbor Bakehouse (where the Paper Son Coffee pop-up once cut its teeth) is nearby—yet the owners are optimistic, offering a pick-up subscription option to help offset bagging and shipping costs amid volatile coffee markets. “The model we have, and the companies we work with, are incredible,” Trabelsi says. “I think we can do it.” The cafe is open 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily." - Paolo Bicchieri

So friendly and welcoming. The staff are some of the nicest people, and the coffee matches their bright personalities. The coffee is top tier, and they ask that you tip the farmers because they pay their staff full wages. Excellent pastries. The well lit seating area (both indoors and outdoors is beautiful and clean. I really love this place! Excellent espresso.

Google
I was wowed by the quality of the drinks. I tried the espresso tonic with orange blossom syrup and my friend had a matcha. Both drinks had and amazing flavor, i need to come back and try more of their drinks. The place is very nice to have a date or come with a friend, there are some seats inside and a few tables outside so you can either stay or take a walk around the neighborhood. I recommend stopping by if you are waiting for your caltrain!

Google
Progeny Café is hands down my favorite coffee spot in San Francisco. They serve exceptional Colombian coffee sourced directly from sustainable farms, ensuring the highest quality in every cup. I absolutely love their oat milk cappuccino with house-made vanilla bean—it’s perfection! They also have some freshly baked pastries everyday and my favorite are the sweet challah buns. Grab a coffee and a bun it’s the best combo 🌞 they also have a very cute terrasse to enjoy the Californian sun, it’s the place to be!

Google
I won’t be drinking regular lattes anymore after trying Progeny’s signature drink- blueberry latte! The blueberry syrup is made in-house and SO delicious and totally not what I expected. It’s perfectly sweet but still has that subtle blueberry tart kick that compliments the coffee so well. Will definitely be my go-to drink! I love Progeny’s entire mission of revamping the fair trade of the coffee industry. Every bean has a story and they tell it front and center. 👌🏻Great mission, cute space, thoughtful selection of drinks and pastries, and amazing service ✨

Google
Progeny Coffee in San Francisco is amazing! The coffee was fresh, smooth, and full of flavor—one of the best cups I’ve had in the Bay Area. The staff was super friendly and made me feel right at home. The pastries were also great—fresh and tasty, perfect with a latte. The place has a cozy vibe and it’s a nice spot to relax or work. If you’re looking for a great coffee shop in San Francisco, definitely check out Progeny Coffee. Friendly people, awesome coffee, and good vibes all around!

Google
Progeny is new to the neighborhood but not coffee. John and Maria have been on a mission to put coffee farmers at the center of their mission and it really shows in everything they do. From featuring the individual farmers on every bag to the mission statement being front and center at the counter, you can tell they really care about the community they’re building. If you want freshly roasted Columbian coffee and amazing freshly baked French pastries while supporting the coffee farmers in Columbia, look no further. Highly recommend the pour over, blueberry latte, and the challah.

Google
Progeny Coffee is more than just a coffee shop—it’s a place with purpose! Their commitment to sustainability and supporting farmers makes every cup feel special. The atmosphere is welcoming, the coffee is excellent, and the team is passionate about making a difference. It’s inspiring to see a business that not only serves great coffee but also works to change the world for the better. So happy to have found this place! Highly recommend! ☕✨

Yelp
I've had Progeny at a pop up event before they had their brick and mortar and really enjoyed the coffee so once I heard they were opening in the city, I was so excited! I love the mission that they have as they cut out the middle man and work directly with coffee farmers. Therefore the prices are quite affordable. I often swing by to pick up a black drip coffee and it gets me going throughout the day. The space is really quick and often filled with people WFH - very cafe vibes! I tried their blueberry matcha latte as well as the blueberry latte and they were by far my favorite. Especially since I'm not a lover of blueberry things! I did think the blueberry flavor was stronger in the blueberry latte rather than the matcha but it might be due to variability of the baristas. Overall highly recommend for a quick grab and go!
google avatar

Yelp
This review is specifically for the matcha!! I'm sure their coffee is way better! Small cafe within an apartment building! They have super nice natural lighting with huge windows. They have a couple small tables and a counter area to work on. Limited outlets for WFH but more of a space to yap for a bit. My friend and I got the Matcha Latte and Blueberry Matcha; both were very mediocre. Blueberry syrup definitely was yummy but overpowered the entire drink. The regular Matcha Latte just tasted like milk :(. This place is known for coffee so I probably just got the wrong thing!

Yelp
Blink and youll miss it but this quiet and small little coffee shop cleverly hidden inside The Landing apartments is just the modern take on your morning coffee experience you've been looking for. Columbian owned and farmed coffee is next level. With delicious flavors, whether you like it sweet or black and ceremonial grade matcha iced or hot this is a must stop on the many coffee shops surrounding the dogpatch area. My go to is the blueberry matcha and the wonderful staff is fully aware of it because they make it just how i like it every time i go in. I love that the blueberry syrup is made from scratch and i love how theyre not afraid to try new fruity flavors

Yelp
Came by Sunday morning for a quick latte and cappuccino and was surprise at how nice the area was! I ordered an Iced Banana Latte with a cappuccino and total was around $11 after everything. Asked if there was a resident discount but the barista said the discount is included in the prices. Ordered came out fairly quickly and when I tasted the banana latte, it tasted pretty burnt with a minor sweet taste. Couldn't really tell if it was banana or chocolate. The building it's in is very fancy with lots of mirrors, cool place to work. Overall, not sure if I'd come back since it's out of the way but willing to try again if I'm in the area.
google avatar

Adel W.

Yelp
A brand new cafe inside the lobby area of the Landing (a new apartment complex). I came on a Saturday morning and it was quite busy! I got the Banana Latte since it was seasonal and they make their syrups in house. It wasn't too sweet and tasted like real banana (there are clumps)! However it was $8 which is really steep, even for a flavored drink. I'd definitely come back to chill if I was in the area.

Yelp
The staff are super friendly, the drinks and pastries are very tasty, and the space is open and filled with natural light--what's not to love? I got an iced blueberry latte. The coffee was very smooth with a very subtle blueberry flavor that I quite enjoyed. My husband got a regular latte, which was also very yummy. In terms of pastries, we ordered got the babka and kouign amann. Both were yummy, although I still prefer B patisserie for my kouign amann. One drawback is that they currently serve all of their drinks in to-go cups, and so we brought our own mugs/cups since we planned to stick around and get some work done for a couple of hours. I would love to come back and try their other drink offerings if I'm ever back in the area!

Yelp
After joining a run club at 8am by the Chase Center and putting in a few miles, I thought it'd be a good idea to cross off a new coffee shop on my list since we were in the area. Iced Blueberry Latte - This was very refreshing especially after a run. The blueberry was very subtle. Only feedback is too much ice Ube mochi muffin? - taste was bland, texture could've been better Overall, love the decor. Service was great.

Yelp
Came to Progeny on a Saturday morning, and it was great! I got a Blueberry Iced Matcha Latte and gotta say, it was some of the best I've had. Delicious! When it comes to the actual cafe, it's located inside of "The Landing", an apartment complex, but there is indoor seating and some outdoor seating available. There wasn't too many people when it came to waiting in line. As for the service, it was great. Really loved the vibe of the place. Will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
My bestie actually shared this place to me to share with our other coworker, since they had blueberry matcha lattes! The second she did, we ended up scheduling a matcha excursion to try this place out. Progeny Coffee is located inside a residential apartment unit, and it's tucked in the corner with beautiful decor and such a modern look to it! There are side tables on the right side with bleacher style seats with pillows OR there is seating outside if you prefer that. The menu was pretty short and sweet, in addition to the pastries they had there. My coworkers and I decided to try the iced blueberry matcha latte w/ oatmilk ($8.50) and I did also get a blueberry latte with almond milk ($8.50) for another coworker. I also got a Babka for $5.50 Total for everything was around $22.50 before tip! REVIEW OF EACH ITEM: -Iced Blueberry Matcha with Oatmilk - I thought this might be a good combination and it was! I thought the blueberry would overpower the matcha, but it adds quite a subtle blueberry flavor to it. The matcha itself was very smooth and not grainy at all. It was a good pick me up without having TOO much caffeine and I do appreciate how much you get in a cup! I always say - you can always add extra blueberry if you want more of a stronger taste! It does go away once you mix it up. 4/5 -Babka: WOW THIS WAS SO GOOD. I devoured this INSTANTLY because of how good it was! It was just a super fresh, chewy bun that was not overly sweet at all. I believe it had chocolate running throughout, which was so good. Not dry at all!! 5/5 -Iced Blueberry Latte: I got to try a sip of the coffee and I liked it! I didn't taste much of the strawberry, but the coffee was strong and slightly bitter which was delicious. I'll have to order this next time or try the banana latte! 4/5 Definitely a cute cafe nestled in an apartment complex! I'll have to try more items on their menu and support this business :') The quality of coffee and tea is great!

Yelp
Cool new spot in the Potrero Hill area, inside an apartment lobby. Solid amount of seating, and it's a beautiful space. The coffee was quite average. Really dark and felt over-roasted. Milk was a bit overly frothy and not creamy and smooth. The matcha was also ok. Definitely on the grassier side. Good spot for a quick pit stop, but nothing special in terms of the coffee or matcha.
google avatar

Yelp
Sadly, this coffee shop was a no for me. I was super excited to try the banana latte, but was really disappointed with the taste. The drink had zero banana flavor, and the coffee was pretty sour. Customer service was great, the ambience was cute and modern, but as for coffee, I would not return.

Yelp
I decided to stop here on the way to work this morning. This coffee shop is located in the Dogpatch/Potrero Hill area, and the whole neighborhood looks newly developed. The shop is inside The Landing apartments' lobby, and I found parking on the next street over. When I walked inside, I was greeted with a hello/welcome and a warm smile. Since I came pretty early, there was only one person in front of me. I ordered an iced Blueberry Latte with almond milk. They didn't charge extra for alternative milk, which was nice. On the first sip, I could really taste the coffee. I loved that the coffee wasn't masked by the milk or blueberry syrup. If it did, it wouldn't be a good coffee. The blueberry syrup was very yummy and blended well with the coffee. However, if I could change one thing, I would ask for less sweet next time, even if that means less syrup. The drink was just a little too sweet for me. Overall, great coffee shop!

Yelp
Love this cafe so much! Their dedication and commitment to their farmers is unmatched. They partner directly with farmers, focusing on those facing challenges, and reward their hard work by paying equitably and above fair trade pricing which is incredible! You can really tell by their coffee selections and the owners' vast knowledge of coffee, where and WHO they were sourced from, and so much more. Also, the owners are some of the sweetest people ever. Ever since I came in before they were opening to chat coffee (since I love coffee myself and make a lot of home cafe videos on social media), I always get the warmest smile and greeting every single time I visit. Such a joy speaking with them! Of course their brewed coffee is so good. I've tried their espresso standalone, drip, flat white, macchiato - all amazing. I just treated myself to a Sunday iced blueberry latte and it was incredible - perfect balance of blueberry, coffee, milk - all working together so harmoniously well. Love the vibes too! Great music, decent seating as they share the space with an apartment complex, and wonderful baristas (ALL of them, not just the owners, are so great to talk with). Great and much needed addition to SF, despite the abundance of coffee shops in Dogpatch, Progeny stands out :)

Yelp
Located in the lobby of The Landing Apartments, this is a new addition to the Potrero Hill coffee scene. I came by in the morning and there was no line. Most people come here for the Blueberry Latte, but what drew me here was the Espresso Tonic. Originating in 2007 at a Swedish café, this is the caffeinated, non-alcoholic cousin to the classic Gin & Tonic. In addition to the plain version, there were 2 floral ones just in time for spring. The rose one had my name on it, but I chose the Orange Blossom Espresso Tonic ($4.75) instead since I don't see that flavor often. +Refreshing and balanced: Not too acidic or sweet. +Espresso was smooth and had notes of chocolate. +Foam was airy and creamy even though no dairy was added! +No upcharge for no ice -I couldn't taste the orange blossom at first, but it came through after the 1st few sips. Side notes: 1.) Comfy indoor seating and uncovered outdoor seating 2.) Walking distance from 22nd Street Caltrain Station *Verdict: 4.5 stars rounded up to 5. I had some questions about the menu, and the cashier helping me was patient. The barista was friendly too and he asked me to let him know how it was. I love their mission to support Colombian coffee farmers. I'll be back to try their Rose Espresso Tonic!

Yelp
This is a cute little cafe inside of an apartment community called The Landing. The baristas here are really chill and nice --providing absolutely amazing service. Pablo helped us out. We had great conversation about coffee, dialing in, etc. since I used to work in the industry. I got the espresso which was very bright and citrusy. The vibes of the place is also really nice and you could definitely do work over here, since there is workspace, outlets, and wifi.
google avatar

Ajay K.

Yelp
Friendly staff, an inspiring mission, immaculate vibes, and matcha without clumps... what more can you ask for? Really glad to have Progeny as an excellent addition to the growing food/coffee scene in Dogpatch. This is also a great place to put your headphones on and get some work done. Looking forward to checking out their challah bread varieties next time!
google avatar

Helen C.

Yelp
Fantastic new coffeeshop in Potrero/Dogpatch neighborhood with nice seating inside. They're known for Colombian coffee and to be honest, I couldn't tell you what that usually means, but I can tell you it's a really good cappuccino and vanilla latte. Within walking distance you've got a number of really good coffee shops, including CoffeeShop, Ikon and Paper Son. With that said, Progeny might be one of my new favorites with a smooth taste without being bitter or too acidic. It is also woman-owned and operated so cheers to Women History Month. They also have nice pastries from French Spot, which I love, and a variety of challah breads that I'll have to come back for. It's located in the lobby of condo complex, The Landing, so you've got some nice seating options to chill and sip.
google avatar

Steph L.

Yelp
The banana coffee was really good, not too sweet with strong coffee flavor and hints of banana. I saw that they used fresh banana puree to make the coffee. I also got a blueberry matcha latte which was a good balance of matcha and sweetness. I think my favorite was the banana coffee. The store was well lit with lots of natural light. Parking was slightly crowded. Baristas were helpful and friendly. Would definitely return.
google avatar

Lin C.

Yelp
I first found out about progeny on TikTok and got hooked now on blueberry flavored drinks- matcha and espresso lattes. AND to my surprise they had a banana latte which I liked even more! We tried a morning bun and it was delicious. They were also testing out samples and gave us a pistachio bun which was also yummy and it too sweet! Excited to come back again when they have new seasonal drinks.
google avatar

Dominic B.

Yelp
Came back to try drip coffee and a pastry. Drip coffee had a very clean flavor without any particular bitterness or burntness to it. It came piping hot and featured a nice aromatic scent as well. I honestly don't know what patry I got - I just pointed at something that looked tasty and I can also confirm it was delicious. Not too heavy. Lots of layovers with a bit of crispiness too. Really enjoying this cafe so far.
google avatar

Alex F.

Yelp
Great Coffee and Great Service. Something should be said when coffee is done right. So I am saying it. The coffee was deeee-licios.
google avatar

Van C.

Yelp
Cute little spot for a quick coffee, friendly barista and quick service. I got the iced blueberry latte and it surprised me they use real blueberries. They got some cool specialty drinks that I will come back to try more.
google avatar

Linda L.

Yelp
Came to check out this new coffee shop in Potrero. I was planning on just getting a matcha latte (they serve ceremonial grade!) but I was convinced to try their blueberry matcha latte. It's also their most popular drink. The blueberry jam is made in-house! The drink was delicious and the baristas were super sweet. It's at the floor level of The Landing with seating on some steps with little tables and like a bar seating area. Definitely coming back for this drink again and again :)
google avatar

Teresa A.

Yelp
If you're even thinking about grabbing coffee in the Bay Area, this is your sign to RUN to Progeny. From the moment we walked in, Josue and Angle treated us like VIPs super attentive, friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable. They handcrafted our banana lattes (yes, banana lattes... and YES, they were insanely good) with such care and detail it felt like a full-on coffee ceremony. But what blew me away even more was learning about their mission. Progeny is women-owned and directly supports Colombian farmers, paying them fairly and helping lift entire communities out of poverty. They're not just making exceptional coffee they're changing lives. The space is bright, welcoming, and has that perfect mix of cozy and modern. You can feel the love and intention behind every part of this place. Bottom line: Progeny isn't just a coffee shop, it's an experience. Delicious, ethical, and full of heart. 10/10 recommend!
google avatar

Jonathan L.

Yelp
Cute small coffee place inside of an apartment lobby. Their signature drinks are these blueberry lattes/matcha, and I enjoyed both of them. The blueberry flavor was clear and didn't feel like it was just a flavored syrup (could've been ‍ but it felt well incorporated and light). Not too much seating, but there's a lot of come and go, and if you do get a spot, it's a comfortable lobby to spend some time and work in.
google avatar

Zach S.

Yelp
The coffee here is surprisingly good, I would definitely make a detour and come here versus some of the other options in the neighborhood. It's also less expensive than nearby options, which is win/win. It's a little hidden and you need to go out of your way to find it, but it's worth it. I just wish their pastries were different, but the coffee is great.
google avatar

Joy B.

Yelp
I found this place randomly on Google and I'm soo glad i did! They have amazing coffee, pastries, and people! What more can you ask for? Definitely my favorite place in the area

Kamryn O.

Yelp
I almost never leave reviews, but this place is truly phenomenal! The pastries and drinks are delicious and the environment is perfect for if you need a spot to work or to relax & have fun! They have great events at night too - and the staff are absolutely wonderful. Definitely a must check out!
google avatar

Katie N.

Yelp
Great service, easy parking in this neighborhood, solid oat vanilla latte, outdoor seating to enjoy a coffee and pastry and do some work!
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
a small and adorable coffee shop located at the bottom of the Landing apartment building, it prides itself on its sustainable practices and sources. the staff are super friendly, and the iced blueberry latte ($8) was very aesthetically presented. taste wise it was decently balanced -- the espresso was good quality and the syrup wasn't too sweet. would recommend hehe
google avatar

Sam M.

Yelp
Great new addition to the neighborhood. The space is inviting and vibey and I love the mission of the cafe. Additionally, the baristas were super nice and knowledgeable about their beans as well as their matcha. Loved the iced matcha latte I got here!
google avatar

Mallory L.

Yelp
Great coffee and great service! The owner seemed to know her stuff and was genuinely so kind to us. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Another new great coffee place! We yelped and find this place then drive to come try. Great simple selection and well latte made! Will come try other menus next time :)

Emily L.

Yelp
Such an underated hidden spot. I saw the blueberry coffee and I knew I had to try it. Located in the dogpatch neighborhood, parking is a bit difficult on any given day. I am not from SF and just went to try the drink. I quickly realized it was located inside an apartment complex but that didn't stop me. The drink is so delicious with a nice sweet balance from the blueberry. I love this place even more for the fact they pay their farmers a living wage. Often times farmers are not paid well and are exploited. This place tips the growers direct and you can see how the beans travel from the farm to the shop.

Ralyn L.

Yelp
Banana Latte was delicious. Friendly staff. I was able to work at this location great natural lighting.

Remus I.

Yelp
Pretty good matcha, but even better coffee. Sadly I won't return as much due to the property management in that building! I know the stars are not for their coffee, but the coffee shop owner needs to talk to those two African American women (property managers) that came an harassed due to my dog peeing at a public space (outside of building). This was right after I ordered and wanted to pick a verbal argument that turn out bad for the property manager due to lack of knowledge of public sidewalks, tree beds, and road. When I return to grab my coffee they were near the lid area for our cups and advise them to move. I do not know why they were there if the are not employees of Progeny they should not be touching their property and making it difficult and uncomfortable for the customers.
google avatar

Nicole K.

Yelp
Great new coffee option in Potrero Hill! Had to try their blueberry latte. I chose iced with oat milk and it was delicious and creamy. The blueberry taste was not overpowering and was a nice accent flavor. Love their mission statement and the basis of their business. They had a nice selection of pastries too that looked tasty (but I had just gotten a box of cookies from Christine's so I will have to try next time!). There is a mochi financier with my name on it. Service was great, sounds like they are fairly new so the setup is very nice, in the lobby of a nice development called The Landing.

Tatiana T.

Yelp
Love the vibe here! We got to try a new pistachio pastry and it was so good. If you like a light sweet and dark chocolate vibe this is definitely for you
google avatar

Vanessa F.

Yelp
Obsessed with their matcha latte and Uber mochi! It's my go-to! Staff is super friendly, and always have treats for my pup

Cal H.

Yelp
This is a wonderful spot! The service is excellent! The baristas are so nice. While ordering I got talking with them and mentioned I am new in town. They gifted me a free drink if I bought a pastry! I tried the sesame mochi cake. It was so sticky, fragrant, and wonderful. The perfect amount of sweetness (oftentimes these type of desserts are WAY too sweet and the magic of the flavor gets lost). I also got a hot hojicha latte with oat milk which is one of my favorite drinks. I'm glad they have it because not many places do. The tea was such good quality. So warm and nutty! The inside of the cafe is so beautiful. A great spot to sit and work or just relax!

Yelp
TThe coffee here is bold and smooth exactly how I like it. I had an iced latte and it was perfectly balanced. The place has a cozy vibe, ideal for working or relaxing.!

Jayda F.

Yelp
Great coffee and service! The owner, John, was very kind and staff were all so friendly. I would highly recommend.

Yelp
new coffee shop in dogpatch/potrero hill! their mission directly supports coffee farmers. will come back try the blueberry latte next time

Genna C.

Yelp
yummy matcha. stumbled upon this small cafe and was enlighten by the richness of the two matcha drinks! the baristas were wonderful and friendly!

Louis C.

Yelp
The people working here are very friendly and sweet! We enjoyed a great coffee, matcha and mochi cake in the great ambience!

Yelp
Lovely coffee with a nice chill spot to sit. Finally a wonderful nice barista in the city!!

Linda G.

Yelp
Came by here to try the blueberry latte! They were still making it in the morning and said it was going to be about 15 minutes. I didn't mind the wait but they were so kind to gift me the drink free of charge. I really appreciated the thoughtfulness of this gesture and I was having one of those difficult mornings. Great customer service! I wish I got the name of the gentleman.

Janelle L.

Yelp
New Coffee Shop in the Potrero Hills/ Dogpatch Neighborhood. We love the story behind the business, the tips go to the farmers, women owned, great service, and delicious coffees. We tried their specialty coffee, Iced Blueberry Latte. It was perfect and not too sweet. We will be back!

Selena H.

Yelp
I love their blueberry matcha and coffee a lot, for the past 3 days, I've been getting a drink every afternoon, today I jushad my boyfriend ordered the banana latte to bring me home and turns out it's just unsweetened regular latte...still really good coffee but :(
