Proud Mary Review - Zilker - Austin - The Infatuation

"If you ever wondered what a $16 cup of coffee tastes like, Proud Mary is where to find out. Is it worth it? That depends on how much you care about rare, specialty beans, and how much money you have to burn. This is an Australian-born cafe—with just a couple of locations in the US—which means that in addition to flat whites and pricey pour-overs, you’ll also find the requisite avocado toast and Aussie sausage rolls, and beetroot pavlovas on the menu. The space is bright and airy, with tall, floor-to-ceiling windows that spill light across the pretty big dining room, and it’s a comfortable place to relax for an hour while you slowly savor that $16 cup of coffee in front of you and silently question whether or not you should consider a move to Australia. If you’re the type of person who likes to nerd out about things like anaerobic fermentation and Geisha coffees, Proud Mary is where you’ll want to head. And if you couldn’t care less about whether or not your beans contain subtle notes of cantaloupe and pink guava, there’s also a full menu of standard coffee and espresso-based drinks, at pretty standard prices." - Nicolai McCrary

My personal favorite? The potato hash — crispy on the outside, soft and flavorful inside. I took my parents and cousin here for brunch, because I wanted them to experience something totally different from what we’re used to in Asia — that signature Melbourne café charm. We all loved the cute little tasting cards that came with the coffee flight — such a fun and thoughtful touch. It was the perfect way to introduce them to what local brunch feels like here: calm, creative, and full of heart.

Our first time to try this cafe and we will definitely come back! The coffee was really good, the service was great and the bacon was the beeeeeeeeest thick cut bacon I’ve ever had! Everything we had was worth coming back for!☺️ 🤎

I had a lovely experience at Proud Mary Cafe. The croissant, coffee, and breakfast were all really good. We ordered the Harissa eggs, which were delicious, but for the portion size, it felt a bit pricey. The staff were kind and welcoming, which made the visit even better. A great spot overall!

Google
An icon in Melbourne! What a place, absolute ripper! I have been coming here on and off for years and could never be disappointed with the quality offering that Nolan offers. Nolan is a true trailblazer in the hospo industry. I have also been to their shop in Austin which thankfully has the ‘hash’ on the menu. I got two long blacks and both were excellent. I preferred the natural, the body was fuller and overall the acidity and sourness were more balanced for my liking but… that’s just me. Be open people! Why this place has a 4.2 rating surprises me. So many haters for a company doing their best representing hard working farmers! If you come to Melbourne take a moment to appreciate all that Proud Mary represents and if you can’t get in the moment speak to a lovely staff member to help you!

Google
Had a fantastic brunch at Proud Mary! We ordered the Potato Hash, Avocado Kimchi Toast, and the Mushrooms Toast — every dish was full of flavour and beautifully presented. The coffee was excellent (as always), and the service was friendly and efficient. A solid spot for consistently great food and good vibes. Will definitely be back!

Google
Take rope or handcuffs to delay your eviction as you won't want to leave. Quite simply the best brunch spot in Melbourne. Both the Harissa eggs and avo kimchi toast are outstanding. The coffee is pretty good too ;-) Cute presentation card delivered with your coffee give you a nice backstory. Every member of staff have a smile on their face which tells you it's a great place to eat, drink or work! If you like and appreciate this review please give it a like or a thumbs up so that I know what content to include in future reviews.

Yep, I love this place. Really great coffee, great food, lovely staff, lovely vibe. Truly a delight! All coffees are great, milk, black, pour overs, cold… Highly recommend the porridge, the avo toast, the hash

Google
Coffee was amazing. I had a magic. If you’re in Aussie, always order magic for the right proportions of milk to coffee. They lived up to their name of having one of the best coffees in Australia. I had the Potato hash. Texture was balanced. The ricotta pancake with meringues wasn’t overly sweet as well. Waited about 20 minutes on a Saturday. A should visit if you’re around the area. It’s a popular spot with tourists too.

Yelp
My family and I went last month and ordered lattes, flat whites, and caps. So delicious!! Drinks were smooth and didn't taste over/under-roasted or acidic. It's a very hipster place, which I don't care for, but it's the drink quality that stood out to me. I should note that we all tried a more well-known boujee/hipster place in Melbourne afterward, and we much preferred Proud Mary with its more understated shop and environment.

Yelp
I love this hipster coffee with the rise and brunch kind of ordeal! Their iced coffee with ice cream is to dream and delve over on an everyday, Melbourne weather day that turns sprinkling rain with cloudy forecast to hot summery days! Their potato hash is to devour, indeed! Poached eggs is cooked perfectly and runny. Dip their thick sliced bacon on that runny egg yolk, and it is to consume all in one savory bite! Their potato hash is crispy and I'm strandy bits internally. It's so great with the combination of egg yolk and bacon! Service was wonderful and they make each dish appealing to the eye! Praise it to be proud Mary!

Yelp
Found this restaurant via Yelp review. This was my 1st time in Melbourne, and although I wasn't staying in the area, I made the trip to check it out. It was a lovely summer day, and there is outdoor seating option. Inside of the restaurant is very spacious, and not overly loud. You can seat at the table, but they also have bar seats by the window if you wish gawk at people on the streets. Going midweek at 11am, seating was a breeze. My waitress was prompt to take my order. I had a large flat white-yummy. I had seen the ricotta hotcakes and I had my heart set on that but the current menu has a different type of hotcakes. The one I had had brown butter curd, sour cream cheese..etc. The waitress did let me know that it takes a bit of time to make ~10mins. No worries, I was not in a rush. I also ordered a side of Kale salad to balance things out. The salad was as expected, the leaves not to tough and the dressing was good. It's pretty small, literally, a side. Don't order it as a main meal. While the hotcakes looked, the taste was not pleasing to my palate. The hotcakes were on a bed of white jelly like substance which totally freaked me out as I thought it was raw egg whites and I had to ask a staffer what it was made from. He returned later to say it's made from eucalyptus. Despite thing, I still couldn't enjoy it was too much like the texture of raw egg whites. The look and also the texture. I am NOT a fan of raw eggs in any way shape or form, so you can imagine how I felt eating around it. And this impregnated my mind with the fact that the hotcakes tasted "eggy". Ideally, I wanted to get another plate so I can take the hotcakes out of that substance but I couldn't get the attention of the staff so I just kept using my knife to remove it from the hotcake base. Payment is at the counter.

Yelp
The husband and I had many outstanding breakfasts in Australia, but this may have been the best one! We visited pre covid and the place was very busy. We tried several items, he had one of their smoothies (delish), we both had fancy coffees that were tasty, and j had the potato hash, which was served with perfectly cooked eggs, thick bacon, and some of the best sauce of my life... I definitely licked the plate, no shame. I'd highly recommend!

Yelp
This is another one of the many cafes that you can pretty much find all over inner Melbourne. The cool thing about this cafe is that it is not on the main streets, which mean it doesn't get as crowded for your morning, before work, breakfast. Okay, I came here on a weekday, which is generally a better time if you actually want to have a seat. Okay, it wasn't one of my favourites, but it was still a pretty cool place, particularly since it is in one of the old warehouses that dot the areas. There were also some good options on the menu, but I basically went for what I like - the eggs benedict.

Yelp
I found this place due to a quick google search of "best places in Melbourne for coffee and breakfast" Let me start by saying, they are most definitely not wrong about it. As a New Yorker, I come from the land of "please wait to be seated" and "that'll be a 30 minute wait" so I was unsure about how everything worked. However, the friendly staff greeted me right away and sat me at a communal table. Overall, the ambiance can be summed up with a simple word - COOL. Located in the chill suburb of Collingwood, this place is the perfect spot for a chill coffee and yummy brekkie! My server told me all about their single origin coffees and helped me choose (bc I'm V indecisive). They really aren't lying when they say that Melbourne is home to some of the best coffee in the world! For food - there are a variety of options that range from eclectic and different (kimchi avo toast, salmon pate, yougurt w/ berries, ovo, and celery) to brekki staples. I got the salmon pate and had nothing left to spare. A+++ from me.

Yelp
I had just come off a plane from LA and had time to kill, and needed some good breakfast. I went for the cheese tomato croissant & a side order of bacon with 2 eggs. The croissant was heaven and tasted like something straight outta France (side note I've never been to France but I imagine it's taste like that). It was toasted perfectly & the cheese melted& and then the croissant had this faint sweet glaze on top that made it heavenly. the bacon & eggs were good too but that damn croissant Then the latte was so good I had two

Yelp
A coffee gem... And my favorite cafe in the city! Proud Mary is a popular breakfast destination known for their exceptional quality coffee. But even if you are not much into coffee, come for their relaxing ambiance and delicious all-day breakfast menu. The interior was not exactly spacious, but the place is transformed into this fun and cozy brunch spot with a little industrial vibe to the design from mostly the applications of exposed red bricks. Their menu listed classic Aussie brekkie as well as lunch options. We ordered and shared: * Ricotta Hotcakes: This was probably best suited for those who enjoyed sweet kind of breakfast - two stacks of ricotta filled hotcakes garnished with orange caramel, raspberries, sour creams and caramelized mandarin, it was just decent overall. * Pork shoulder open sandwich: My favorite dish of them all. The pork was tender and flavorful combined with melted cheese and crunchy bread, delicious and this made my palate dance. * Smoked salmon scramble: Least favorite dish on our table, soggy scrambled eggs, mixed with cut-up smoked salmon, which tasted extremely fishy for my likings. * Potato hash w/ bacon: If you love potatoes, this would be a heavenly dish, just love how well-seasoned every component are, there won't be a bite where it's not flavorful. For my coffee, I got Proud Mary's exclusive, the Geisha - a dark roasted coffee, which not only tasted incredibly silky but also has lots of complexity... This beauty definitely worth the premium price tag of $15 per cup. Aside the allure of great coffee, the service was classy, the food was visually appeasing and love the inviting atmosphere... Proud Mary is a well worth visit.

Yelp
Most disappointing brunch ever. I ordered the magic mocha for five bucks which contains mork chocolate and it was weak and barely had a coffee or chocolate flavour. The avocado dish for a whopping 18 bucks came sans tabbouleh salad or quinoa. It is literally an avocado cut in half topped with Pepita and roasted sunflower seeds served with two slices of dry toast and a chilli sauce that is not even hot or spicy. I had to do all the work. Scoop out the avocado (no spoon provided), spread it across my toast, put some seeds on top because they had fallen off and then put some weak chilli sauce on top. This dish max should cost 10 bucks. My friend thought her fish tacos were ok. And the other friend wasn't too impressed by her pork belly sandwich. Poor service. Was impossible to grab the waitress' attention and she couldn't even muster a smile. Our bottle of water was never replaced. We were never asked about our food even though we got there at around 2pm (no wait and not a busy time). Pro - they do split bills. Cons - everything else.

Yelp
Nice cafe and brunch place in the heart of Collingwood. Diverse range of coffee and food options make this place a standout for a lazy morning (and afternoon) treat. The staff are friendly and prompt. Plenty of seating from small tables to booths!

Yelp
We had to wait long for service but then again it was a full house during a busy hour (11ish) on a busy day (Saturday) so I guess it was expected. Food took quite a while to arrive but was worth the wait. I got the pancakes which tasted delicious in a wholesome way (not too sweet, interesting textures) and the ice cream that topped the stack was awesome. My partner got a pulled pork sandwich which was tasty and the perfect complement to pancakes so I devoured half of it. My flat white was good, nothing too exceptional, but my partner's cold brew was flavorful. Probably the most complex thing we ordered. Their coffees and the stories with them are definitely interesting. The vibe was very hip and customers were a diverse mix of couples, groups, and even lone diners with only a book as companion. I'd definitely go back and try out their other stuff.

Yelp
When you realise you've made it to Collingwood before 9am on a Saturday, quickly get yourself to Proud Mary! No line, no waiting! We walked straight through and were seated, our coffee orders promptly taken. We arrived one week before the menu went through it's seasonal change so there were a few items not available and some substitutions. I ordered the ricotta hotcakes with ginger maple syrup while my partner ordered the porridge. Now in hind sight, I wish I had of ordered a savoury dish. The ricotta hotcakes would of done well as a dessert for 2! A pillowy pancake floating in a bowl of ginger maple syrup, layered with poached pears and mascarpone. This monster was absolutely delicious! I definitely could not finish it on my own and was on a sugar high for the rest of the morning. The porridge was delicious also. After tasting it, I definitely could eat that for breakfast each and every morning. Another healthy portion, all meals are value for money at Proud Mary! Finally the coffee. Fantastically made! But then again, I didn't doubt it wouldn't be! We grabbed a couple croissants to go for afternoon tea before leaving - now I'm not sure where these come from but, my oh my, it was delicious! It gave the croissants in Paris a run for their money!

Yelp
Best breakfast I have had in a while. Eggs cooked perfectly over excellent buttered toast. I added a side of potato hash and they were scrumptious; crispy on the outside, moist and tasty on the inside. We also had the hot cake, which was a bit of heaven on earth. So many flavors! Don't forget to the coffee! Best coffee I've had, probably ever. It was seriously that good. Rumor has it they might be opening a location in Austin. Close enough for me! In the meantime, I will be back to this location before I head back to the states.

Yelp
I had the scrambled roti and my mate the smoked salmon and both were 10/10 . The coffee was exceptional and one of the beat coffees in Melbourne. I would be coming back soon for sure.

Yelp
Proud Mary is always busy. ALWAYS. Even on a Tuesday morning when normal people are at work they'll be pumping. I usually sit solo at the bar and drink my coffee wondering why everyone isn't at work... "who are these people?" I wonder while I look at them happily tucking in to the corn/quinoa/avo on toast or the big bowls of bircher muesli (which is rather good I might add). Coffee here comes any which way you like it. Order a simple latte and you'll be offered options when it comes to the beans they use. If you like to geek out over coffee then you can certainly do that here, but it's also not intimidating for those wanting just something simple. Pros: the coffee and awesome music. Cons: it's often frantic and noisy.

Yelp
Regarded by many as one of the benchmark speciality coffee cafes in Melbourne, Proud Mary is still going strong. After visiting for a few years now, this review has been a long time coming. Nestled in the back streets of Collingwood away from busy Smith Street, the cafe has found its home in base of an old red brick factory building with a simple logo sign adorning the doorway. Do not be worried about not finding it though, as Proud Mary has built its reputation enough to have people flocking in and out all day long. During peak weekend lunch periods it is almost always necessary to wait for a table to become available, though you may be lucky every now and then. Inside, community is key with most of the tables being communal with a few small tables, booths and window benches available. Probably the first thing one notices, however, is the giant espresso machine. This is a custom-built six group Synesso, a testament to their passion for quality coffee. Hanging above the machine on the wall is a blackboard listing the daily espresso options, usually three or four different single origins in addition to the usual blends. The staff regularly travel internationally right to the origin itself at the coffee farms in search of new, high quality beans. The food menu is equally full of choices with a range of breakfast and lunch options. In past years the menu has remained constant for months on end with the same but well proven dishes but recently there has been quite a few changes with some creative dishes. Current options include "Cotechino" - pork sausage, creamed fennel, crispy garlic, poached egg and sourdough, Ox Tongue with smoked almonds, crispy onion, peppers, poached egg and sourdough and Beef Cheek Burger with romesco sauce, guindilla peppers in a brioche bun and kipfler potato crisps. The old favourite pork belly sandwich has also evolved into a gorgeous juicy cut of pork belly on a bed of frekkah grain, green chilli yoghurt and almonds, which I had on this particular visit. These refreshed menu changes and ever changing coffee selection show that long time Proud Mary is very much still relevant and evolving in the world class Melbourne speciality coffee cafe culture.

Yelp
Fantastic coffee!! Service was also excellent and the food was delicious. We all had the kimchi and avo on toast. I had the gluten free bread - which was really really good (probably the best gf bread I've had). It was amazing. Would highly recommend this place. If I could I would have eaten breakfast here every day, steadily making my way through the menu.

Yelp
Mouth heaven. For the coffee and the food. I don't need to say anything about the coffee, it's damn good. And that's why you would come here in the first place. But oh the food! Start with the savoury yumminess of the lamb sandwich (tender lamb, buttery toasted bread, fine beetroot and aioli) and then round it out with the ricotta hotcakes with pistachios and poached fruit. The absolute highlight of the ricotta hotcakes was the lavender infused semi freddo. I had to stop and close my eyes for a little minute, without looking too crazy, just to let it melt in my mouth and enjoy the wonderful, aromatic flavour. What a way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Be there.

Yelp
We had been planning on going here for at least a month, but life always gets in the way. Needless to say, I had high expectations and I was not disappointed. There was a line when we arrived at 1:00 PM on a Saturday, but it was an only 15 min wait. We ordered a filtered coffee and the acai coconut juice, both of which exceeded my expectations. The potato hash had the perfect runny eggs and the anchovy cream sauce was delicious!

Yelp
Proud Mary is a well-known Melbourne brunch establishment that I'm happy to report lives up to its reputation. I tried two dishes during my visit: the duck and fig salad and the roast mushroom dish. The salad was delicious. First and foremost, the duck was moist and flavourful. The figs pair well with the duck, and the greens and crumbled cheese round off the salad nicely. The roast mushrooms were also quite good. The dish features several portobello mushrooms, egg, toast, chipotle butter, and whipped goat cheese. The mushrooms tasted good on their own, but the butter and goat cheese add a little something that make the dish that little more enjoyable. Consider sitting at the counter where the drip coffee is made. It's enjoyable watching the baristas at work while they make various coffees, whether they be espresso-based drinks from the espresso machine, drips, or one of the other speciality coffees they make. The biggest negative of Proud Mary comes from its popularity: you're going to have to wait for a table. I arrived at 11am on a Saturday and had to wait 20 minutes, which admittedly wasn't too bad for good brunch.
google avatar

Martin B.

Yelp
As good a flat white as I have ever had. The breakfast options are varied and excellent. The staff is very friendly.
google avatar

Tamer M.

Yelp
One of the best cafes in Melbourne. Saying that, it is not a well kept secret, so on weekends you'll always find a line. But it is worth the wait. Everything here is good, from the coffee to the food, even the service - all is good. I don't live in Melbourne, so there might be better cafes, but I haven't experienced one yet. Just a tip, the smashed avo is fantastic for breakfast. Order the mushrooms on the side, specifically if you like mushrooms. Good sized portions, and extremely tasty. Most of the dishes here are well sized and delicious. The menu is not extensive, but it doesn't need to be. I think the cherry on top of the cake is the coffee - extremely well brood and made with extremely love and care. I couldn't stop at one, and if you love coffee, you won't be able to either. So if you are looking for a good experience come along for the ride, it is worth it.

Yelp
I started to give Proud Mary a 3-star review, and then realized that if not for the super hype around the place and the I realistically high expectations we had of it, I would give it 4-stars. We got there on a Sunday morning just before noon, this place is very popular even though it really does seem to be in the middle of nowhere. Put our names on the waiting list and waited for about 40 minutes for a table. The staff were not overly friendly, but perhaps it was because the place was so busy and cramped. Their "normal" coffee was superb, their soy coffee was downright awful. That said, I don't generally enjoy soy coffee, so maybe other people think it's good. The food was... Alright. Decent, tasty, but it didn't blow my socks off or leave me craving more. I had the potato hash, and my wife had the Frank and Beans. All in all, Proud Mary didn't live up to our expectations. Yes the vibe was good (if not a bit too noisy for our liking), yes the food was decent in quality and quantity, yes the "regular" coffee was superb, but overall, no socks were blown off, no letters were written home, and no "I'll be back"'s were mentioned.
google avatar

Jared S.

Yelp
I haven't written a Yelp review in years, but I'm rising from the dead so you'll come here and get the Avocado (avo toast). I've had a few similar dishes since I arrived in Australia two weeks ago -- and this is BY FAR the best yet. It's brilliant. It's savory and a great mix of flavors: chilli ricotta, corn and quinoa tabouleh, seed & sprout toast. I honestly would go back for another if I had enough time. Instead, I'll dream of my next trip to Melbourne where Avo and I will be reunited.

Yelp
Proud Mary coffee is amazing, try getting a "magic". The staff are friendly (though frantic as the place is always humming and busy, long waits for a table are expected). Coffee is a highlight and matched by some excellent all day breakfast items. The pancakes are nearly impossible to finish (such a huge serving but so tasty), avocado smash is a well done classic too. Always worth a go for a nice breakfast and great coffee.

Yelp
Proud Mary is one of my favourite roasters and cafes for both food and coffee. When people ask what my favourite coffee is or cafes, Prouds always comes to mind. The coffee. Their roasting profiles are in the middle for the Melbourne scene, not too dark or light. Speaking generally, their coffees have a good balance between chocolate and brown sugar, fruits, and acidity. Their coffee menu is long. They have a house blend that rotates between the different blends they have created as the seasons change. They have 3 single origins for espresso that change seasonally. They also have a filter menu (there's a link on the menu to access it on your phone) which can have between 3 and 10 different filter options. Be warned, they are pricey. Single origin espresso can be 4.50 - 5.50. I've even seen $7. Filter can be from 7 - 20. These are some of the most amazing coffees being produced in the world so it's understandable. The problem is their staff have changed over the years and they just aren't that good any more. The coffee needs to be spot on otherwise why pay a premium for high quality when it tastes bad. The food. Ever changing seasonal menu. Great presentation, flavours, and variety. Almond porridge is fantastic but was not on the menu last visit. I don't think I've ever been disappointed with the food here. The cafe. Standard hipster vibe, but this is one of the original hipster cafes that was cool before the hipster said it was. Huge record collection so it's always sad when they are using an ipod instead. I love sitting up at the brew bar. Uncomfortable stools, but lovely black stone counter top, you can watch the baristas stroke their beards and make the occasional coffee. Overall I love Prouds. Even with the over-extracting, ipod playing staff. Prouds has always been there to educating me, feed me, and keep me drugged up on the good stuff (I mean coffee).

Yelp
Honestly one of the best breakfasts of my life. Had the breakfast pudding w lychee and it was magically creamy and sweet. The hash browns were also incredible. Atmosphere was great and service was very friendly, although a tad slow (woman who sat down and ordered after us got her food and finished way before we got our food.). But it was well worth the wait!!!

Yelp
Melbourne. What a place. When you discover Proud Mary you discover Melbourne. Great food and better coffee. I sat down at the bar next to someone and ordered a slow drip as I was entreated but the apparatus that was in front of me. When I took a sip I realised that science and coffee are the perfect combination. I turned to the person next to me and started telling him about how delicious the elixir was that I was drinking. Little did I know at the time but he worked there and started giving me some really good advice on how I could make my own cold drip at home. Before I knew it he had sold me a chemistry set to take home. This guy was good but the coffee was even better.

Yelp
Having frequented many of the great cafes that make Melbourne what it is, it is of my belief that Proud Mary is the Queen of the Melbourne cafe scene. I say this for a number of reasons: 1) Undoubtedly the best coffee in Melbourne, and also the most innovative. From the styles of coffee to the equipment used, no stone has been left unturned when it comes to brewing the best coffee in Melbourne here. You only have to venture to the sister cafe - Aunty Peg's - down the road to realise how seriously the Proud Mary team treat coffee. 2) The menu represents whats good about all the great menus in cafes in Melbourne. From real hash browns to ripper salads and deliciously fresh ready-to-go rolls, the simple menu delivers on so many levels. 3) The location is in the heart of the cafe scene and so many other awesome areas of Melbourne with Smith St and the like only around the corner.

Yelp
This was such a surprise, the staff were really nice and didn't rush you at all. The coffee was simply excellent (I had 3 different single origins) and the food was really tasty with generous servings. I will be back.

Yelp
This place has amazing coffee. The baristas are very helpful with explain the bean options. I ordered the Guatemalan brew and porridge with pear, yoghurt and walnut crumble. Literally the best porridge I've ever had! A beaut place. Would recommend this to anyone visiting melbourne! Just a short tram or bike ride to collingwood!

Yelp
Proud Mary is the type of cafe that offers so much and you can always rely on for quality coffee, fantastic varied menu, delicious sweet treats and great staff. This cafe provides the perfect balance of great coffee (their own roast) to great food. I find this cafe is the best to go during the week, just after the lunch rush (aim for around 1:30/2pm) you'll still experience the buzzing hive which is "Proud Mary" but without yelling at your friend over the table. Best spot for friend catch ups. First/second dates as it'll impress them to no end (making you look über Melbourne coffee savvy) A must-see cafe in Melbourne.

Yelp
What a fun cafe! This is one of my favourite places in Melbourne. The atmosphere is really cool and laid-back, where everyone is fast and efficient but still friendly. Even the baristas will look up from their giant line of coffee dockets to direct you to the bathroom when you wander aimlessly in front of them. Respect. The food is very good. Even the sandwiches from the front register are really special and worth ordering. The table service is good, but when it's really busy it gets pretty loud and crammed in here. The espresso is great, and they nail the lattes and even the soy drinks. I was told that they not only taste test the espresso throughout the day, but also the milk drinks. That's a very respectable practice! The filter coffee is okay. I've ordered it many times, and bought beans for home, and it's just not quite right. I think it's roasted a bit too dark for filter, and it throws the taste off, consistently. I hope they keep refining their filter offerings, because there's lots of potential there. Go for breakfast, grab an espresso, have a chat, and buy a tee on the way out. They're hilarious.

Yelp
As a coffee and brunch fanatic, Proud Mary has been on my hit list for too long. About two years too long! Not sure why it took me so long to get around to this Collingwood institution but I was not disappointed when I finally did. The coffee was brilliant. Definitely right up there with the best cups in Melbourne. Service was fast and friendly. Now for the food. Oh the food! I love a cafe that offers more than various egg dishes for breakfast and Proud Mary delivers. I had the ricotta hotcakes and was stuffed until dinner time! So good. Given the cafe's notoriety, I was expecting a lengthy wait. Thankfully we got straight in and slipped past the growing crowd outside. Seems that if you're wanting to seat a big group, expect a big wait. If you want to sneak in and grab a stool at the window - go solo or as a pair. I would never expect it to be quiet, but it's definitely worth checking out if you've been holding off.

Yelp
You can definitely tell that they take pride in their coffee, from blends, espresso's and filters, delicious hot chocolates (with marshmellows), whole variety of teas and other liquid concoctions. They have a lovely variety of brunch options which isn't all the typical standards of eggs and.... I had potato hash which was mouth watering, maybe a bit too much potato hash - hence being so full till the rest of the day. The other half had house halloumi which was flavoursome except for the actual halloumi. I think your best bet is to travel by yourself or as a pair, as you will have to wait for a while if you have more in your party. We had seats facing the window which was nice but as it's so popular can get quite loud, otherwise it has good vibes!

Yelp
Proud Mary is a great spot! It's where I go for my daily coffee! I love the variety they have in terms of coffee and their baristas know everything about the coffees of the days. They generally always nail the description so you always know what you're going to get and thats just their coffees! You know it's a great spot just by how busy it is! I guess thats a good and a bad thing as the wait at times can drag on a little, especially when you're after a quick take away before or during work. There toasted 'sammys' are packed with flavour and always ways a sure fire win. Though a little expensive, a good treat when you're up for a $10 sammy! Food when you eat in is always consistently great. Eggs are always poached perfectly and the breakfasts are tasty! (I have only had the sammys and the breakfast items) but always been more than happy with. One of the things that makes it miss out on that elusive 5th star is the ambiance, it's way too noisy in their. Everyone's conversations bounce of the walls and roof and at times can be really hard to hear the person opposite you. If you catch it in a quiet time your experience will be fantastic!

Yelp
Proud Mary popped my cold drip cherry and I liked it. They also do great cafe food. They are no strangers to awards and praise with the Age Good Cafe Guide consistently giving them the sign of approval, but every day punters seem to walk away just as satisfied. I munched on the avocado, charred corn and quiona on toast and it was delicious. I will be back for many a cold drip and a brunch.

Yelp
Beautiful breakfast. I ate breakfast here this morning and was highly impressed by the choice of breakfast foods on the menu. I opted for the bircher muesli and a berry smoothie. Both were fantastic, fresh and filling. The sprinkle of cinnamon on the muesli made a huge difference and every mouthful was enjoyable. I got a hot mocha magic to take away before leaving and was so happy with the flavour levels that were in one simple enough drink. Simple sounding food but with extraordinary flavours, I will be back for more breakfasts I'm sure!

Yelp
Bit of. Walk from the business district but totally worth it. Collingworth district was great to see and Proud Mary was great. The pea fritter with poached egg was excellent. Scrambled eggs on wheat toast and muffin were also excellent. The highlight was the hot cake, which is a pancake with bananas, coconut and coconut ice cream. It is not to miss. They also brew (cold) their coffee, which is quite unique. Their flat white was excellent. Great service and community sitting too!

Yelp
The potato hash with Bagna Cauda makes me so freakin happy - more than all the rainbows and unicorns in the world mushed up together.

Yelp
Treasure in Melbourne! :) Amazing Breakfast - one of the best! Great service Understandably very popular - so you can be waiting in line for quite a while.

Yelp
First time visitor and Proud Mary nailed every element that a demanding Melbourne bruncher could wish for. Just lucky? I highly doubt it but the consistency test will require a few return visits to this Collingwood gem. It's got a really buzzy but friendly, truly laid-back vibe with smiling staff and a firm handle on all things coffee; sublime espresso & filter served here. My long black, a single origin Guatemalan was seriously delicious. It's a kind of place that's substance over style that makes me feel comfortable and looked after despite the throng of people. We ordered a crispy pork belly - tender & unctuous with singing happy porky flavour - served on a green chilli farro & almond salad, the spicy kick and nutty crunch wonderful. Also the potato hash, a bloody good rendition of it, with bacon, kale and bagna cauda (North Italian sauce made with plenty of butter, garlic and anchovies, possibly a touch of cream). The sauce by itself is delicious but for me a controversial guest at the hash & bacon love-in. I kept thinking why does my sauce taste like intensified seafood chowder?! Am I going crazy. I googled bagna cauda later. I'm a south of the Yarra resident, spoilt with plenty of good brunch choices but I'm happy to trek for good food, and my north-side neighbours are certainly dishing up a storm. Will be back!

Yelp
Oh that juvenile moment when food envy eats away at your insides faster than the enzymes trying to digest your eventual brunch choice comes so close to ruining one's experience here, but in desperate search for the adult that must be inside me somehow I try to grown up and calm the petulant Epicurus inner-child but it doesn't doesn't work for I have not another opportunity for a return visit in the near future... Well Mary does everyone Proud here, but come with decision-making skills as strong as steel because the seemingly endless battle of anxiety of whether to go for the avocado smash or potato hash nearly rendered me unable to eat. And that was after whittling down the mouthwatering menu dripping with distractions in the from of fig and apricot toast, ricotta hot cakes, bircher museli, coconut and lemongrass pudding... At least you know you'll take some coffee, phew.

Yelp
The staff is lovely, coffee to die for, scrumptious food and a great feel. I had the cold drip coffee and my friend had the long black. Both of which were fantastic. And I don't exaggerate when I say the we are very picky with our coffee. I ordered the Potato Hash and it was delicious. Definitely would re-visit and highly recommend this little coffee heaven!

Yelp
They do breakfast sooooo well it's almost impossible to not fall in love with their menu! Ricotta hotcakes, potato hash and 'ghostrider' espresso brownies are some of their original masterpieces. They don't slack on the drinks either from swirly ice white chocolate to the tropical kaleidoscopic known as Miss Molly. No need to mention their house brand coffee which comes served in their trademark baby blue cups. Don't be turned off by the crowd. There's always a wait, but they're pros at this and always seem to be able to whip up a table in less than 10 minutes!

Yelp
Excellent coffee! Had the two vegetarian mains- the avocado toast and the pea and feta fritter. They both tasted delicious and surprisingly healthy :) or maybe I was just convincing myself... Be warned they are big portions so order wisely! Had a croffun for later- layers of croissants in a shape of a muffin... What's not to love!!!

Yelp
Just short of a little something to make it a five star joint, there're still many things right at this brilliant cafe. Between my companion and I, we had the lunch menu ribs, and the breakfast ricotta hotcakes. Both were delicious, and came with great accompaniments. A Chipotle coleslaw for the ribs, and an amazingly delicate rose Mascarpone for the hotcakes. My flat white was well done, but not the best I've had in Melbourne. It was well executed, but the beans, while good, weren't mind blowing. Service was chirpy, friendly, and it was neither too noisy nor too crowded on a Wednesday afternoon. I generally enjoyed my meal and would definitely go back regularly! So why four stars? Portion size. The items I think are poorly portioned. The ribs and hotcakes were both delicious... for the first 2/3s of the portion. Both were eventually a little one dimensional flavourwise, not varied, a bit jading on the palate. And though the portions were incredibly generous and filling, than also means you usually need a bit more variety on the plate so the diner doesn't get tired of eating the same texture and flavour again and again. Tweak that, and I'll happily give five stars!

Yelp
The venue is situated in an industrial area of Collingwood rather reminiscent of San Francisco's SOMA district. It sits in the backdrop of shiny and new apartment and loft complexes. We stumbled upon it since it lacked the any visible signage, but welcomed us with huge windows with patrons clamoring about inside. As you walk in, you see the main coffee bar, abound with coffee apparatus spanning cold-drips, pour-overs, and espresso machines. Multiple baristas hustling and bustling ticket orders for both takeaway and dine-in patrons. The shelves were stocked with freshly roasted Proud Mary beans, usually ranging from $14-$15 per bag. After perusing the shelves, we sat alongside the main front window counter seating. It was a packed house, but it was relatively easy to find a seat. It was an excellent view of your Sunday morning strolls, communal meet-up points, or patrons pulling in to grab their quick takeaway coffee. The breakfast menu comprised of 6-8 items that are in constant rotation. I decided to go with the hash and seasonal mushrooms for the lady. We ate both with our eyes and mouths. The dishes were both delicious and visually fantastic as shown by the pictures. Their usage of farm fresh ingredients shows in the dish. Portions were more than generous. We finished the breakfast off with house blend piccolo and a single origin strong flat white for the lady. The distinction between the house blend and single origin was great. We grabbed a bag of Ghost Rider ground for pour over on our way out. I wanted to recreate this Sunday smile with my own pour over, and to no avail, the grounds were of adequate consistency to replicate our coffee experience.
