Best Lunch in Austin | Eater Austin

"This East Riverside taco spot — one of several Pueblo Viejo locations across Austin and its only brick-and-mortar — is a go-to for fast, full-plate lunch. Whether craving al pastor tacos or a quesadilla plate with rice and beans, the portions are solid, and the salsas pack heat. There’s covered seating on-site, or take your order to go. Open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m." - Darcie Duttweiler

19 Refreshing Aguas Frescas in Austin

"Get a classic horchata at one of the many locations of the taco truck/restaurant mini-chain around town, or one of its other flavors from pepina to jamaica. Takeout orders can be placed online; there are typically outdoor dine-in areas with some indoor spaces." - Darcie Duttweiler

16 Essential Austin Breakfast Tacos

"The Austin mini-chain with several trucks and restaurants across the city — this one in East Riverside and the others in Dawson at Cosmic Coffee and McKinney at Meanwhile Brewing — has great breakfast tacos. Look no further than the Don Chago, with the best combination of beans, cheese, bacon, and avocado. Takeout orders can be placed online; the restaurant has indoor dine-in services, host sites have indoor and outdoor dine-in areas." - Nadia Chaudhury

As an out-of-town visitor, we selected this establishment during our return journey. Upon reviewing the online reviews, we found the establishment to be highly rated. I personally believe that this is an exceptional taco place. The tacos are exceptionally flavorful, well-seasoned, and presented. The quality of the cheese used in the tacos is particularly noteworthy. I prefer white grated cheese, although yellow melted cheese is not my favorite personal choice. We ordered migas, which were delicious. We also ordered the taco Bueno, which included chorizo, potato, and cheese. It had a very good seasoning and good balance of ingredients. At the counter, you can find a creamy Serrano salsa that can be a good condiment for the Tacos. The coffee had a strong and flavorful taste, which is a significant advantage. However, I would suggest that the restaurant could enhance its ambiance by reducing the volume of the music playing. The current music selection resembles that of a Mexican cantina, which can be challenging for patrons to engage in conversation. I politely requested that the manager lower the volume, but the response was inadequate. The music remained at a high level, even after my request. Furthermore, the restaurant should consider the diverse preferences of its customers when selecting music. Not all patrons may appreciate the same genre of music. Overall, I recommend this place for a last-minute on the go taco.

Long live Pueblo Viejo😃😋 The al pastor tacos are delicious! I also recommend the carne asada tacos. You have to try the creamy serrano sauce and the creamy habanero sauce on top. The interior is beautifully decorated. We will be back to try some specialty tacos and plates.

Google
This place is a hidden gem. Their gorditas are on point! Highly recommend the gorditas plate which comes with rice and beans. Made with a very thin masa that is lightly fried to perfection! So good!

We sat closer to the música. Volume was perfect for convesation grooving in your seat. When ready they will bring food to you. Food & drinks were good. That’s why we are going back to try other plates.

Google
This place is a winner for sure. The food is really tasty and a great value! I’ll def be back. The atmosphere is chill and cute. Perfect for lunch or a meet up with friends.

Google
Staff were very warm and inviting. Their Taco Viejo and Taco Bueno were some of the best breakfast tacos I’ve ever had. Gorditas plate and Tacos plate were loaded and definitely worth the price. Al Pastor Tacos were also phenomenal. You could get a very filling meal here for under 10 dollars, and it tastes great too.

Got the Mole enchiladas and a Jamaica! The food was great and Jamaica tasted fresh. Our server was very nice and the vibes of the restaurant were great too! Will be back.

Google
This place is legit. It’s kind of a hole in the wall but don’t let that deter you. The tacos are so flavorful and the sauces are sooooo good. You can get your own sauces, and there is also outside seating. The service was fast and friendly. Will definitely add this to my Austin eats list.

Yelp
Finally had a chance to try this place with my family today and we really enjoyed our meal! We tried an insane amount of tacos, so here goes: 1. Taco Bueno - this was bomb. So good!! 2. Taco Azteca - this was also so tasty. 3. Migas Tacos - this was disappointing honestly so wouldn't order this again. 4. Al Pastor Tacos - there were delicious and flavorful 5. Pueblo Viejo Taco - so good! 6. Lamb Barbacoa - the meat itself was plentiful and very tender but the taco as a whole not as flavorful as I'd expect. 7. Taco Nes - the most disappointing of all of them even tho I was most excited about this reading the ingredients. The steak was so hard and chewy. :( Lastly, the salsas are all delicious. We did have to go up and ask for silverware & plates a couple times, along with more salsa. Not sure why they don't keep it out for people to grab themselves. Either way, can't wait to be back!

Yelp
I was looking forward to eating here because of the reviews but I was sadly disappointed. They had a special that day where you can get 5 of their selected tacos for around $15. Based on the photo of the special, it looked like a big portion so I ordered the Al Pastor tacos. When the food came out, the tacos were as small as the pepper! The al pastor flavor was minimal and there was barely any toppings. When I eat my tacos, especially al pastor, I want it smothered in onions and cilantro (but that's just me)! Salsas were not provided or offered for the tacos. They also charge you for water which is ridiculous. Service was very lacking and the cashier was not so nice... Maybe I'll give this place another chance and try other dishes, but considering there are other cheaper and better quality tacos in Austin... it might be a hard pass.

Yelp
The foods are absolutely so delicious with a decent good prices! The employees are very friendly to communicate with us as deaf friendly! I'm going to come back to this restaurant for lunch again!
google avatar

Yelp
Riverside is home to multiple taquerias and restaurants that offer breakfast tacos. These are slightly above average taste and quality breakfast tacos when it comes to eating out. However, it must be inflation holding me back from rating higher...those eggs are definitely reflected in the price of $2.75 per taco. 5 breakfast tacos, 2 bottles waters and a 18% tip....came in around $28 . The attitude was also lacking and should've not left a tip. $14 for two people to dine in is a little steep. I'll stick with the taco trucks when I'm not cooking at home, and in the Austin area.

Yelp
Quite literally the best breakfast tacos I have ever had .... PERIOD. Do you self a favor and get the Migas breakfast taco Homemade sauces are absolutely Habanero Fantasma

Yelp
My brother and I decided to get some lunch downtown on Easter Sunday and saw that this place was open! The interior is pretty cool with all the artwork on the ceiling. We both got the taco plates with al pastor and steak tacos. I would say it was pretty worth it for 2 tacos, chips, guac, rice, and beans for $12! My brother and I's favorites was the Al Pastor, so good and tasty. The flavor was lighter than other taco spots I've been to, but still pretty good! Also parking is super easy and plentiful with a big lot!

Yelp
AWESOME! So authentic. So tasty. It's tucked away on the side of a strip mall but don't let that fool you. Everything we ate...and we ate a lot was delicious.

Ginnet A.

Yelp
The most delicious tacos! So authentic y con sazón! The salsa options are all great and range in heat. The mini street taco plate was phenomenal. Overall great service and amazing food. 10/10 recommend.

Eric F.

Yelp
The Steak, Chicken, and Al Pastor Tacos were soooo good. They gave us a sample of the Trompo style tacos while we were waiting and just as good! Can't wait to come back to try the ceviche and fish tacos next!
google avatar

Veronica T.

Yelp
Eh, nothing special. Was clean and welcoming, but food was blah! Got 2 chicken tacos on corn and a side of rice. All were dry and just very ordinary.. nothing extra, not even fresh lime, onions, cilantro, cheese... just dry seasoned chicken meat with sauted onions and poblanos (very few however). Hot sauce was okay, but everything tasted old. Rice was hard... not fluffy. Maybe it was because it was a Monday? Nah, that shouldn't matter. Definitely better places in town to get tacos!
google avatar

Carol K.

Yelp
Amazing tacos and drinks! Highly recommend!! Portions are good in size and hot sauces are on par. The lemonade margarita is out of this world. Definitely a must!!!

Yelp
This was a very disappointing meal. The high stars gave me false hope while we were hanging out on Riverside. I'm not sure what Viejo style tacos means, but I guess it means texmex with no seasoning? There was an assortment of salsas, but none of them were good except the habanero one. The tomatillo was bloated which was a bad sign, and sure enough it tasted rotten when we tried it. There is no sign of limes in this restaurant. Neither the salsas nor tacos have lime. The tacos are that inflated hipster price of about $5 a taco, so I went with the taco plate with rice and beans. Both the rice and beans are very bland and could benefit from some salt. I chose the barbacoa tacos and while it was happily made with goat, it also had no flavor. The strange part about the tacos was mine came with cilantro and onion, but my friend's came with lettuce and tomato?? Service was friendly, but very very slow for only having 2 other tables. I also had to go back and ask for my horchata after my food had already arrived. I would not recommend this place unless you're just looking for some drinks in the area.

Yelp
This hidden spot is a gem for great Mexican food. I will say this is the first Mexican restaurant I been to where I had to pay for chips and salsa. They open for dine in during this pandemic. They have only been around five months they said when I asked them, because I don't recall them being there before the pandemic. The food is made fresh and this is not a Tex-Mex restaurant either. They do have a mini bar and they have plenty of seating for everyone. Their lemonada was very fresh and delicious! Parking was a breeze and in the shopping center.
google avatar

Sarah G.

Yelp
A very good and quick Mexican food spot. They serve all sorts of margaritas, beers, and Mexican specialty drinks. Next time I come I'm ordering the hortchata and limeade for sure. I'm from San Antonio and trying to find a good taco spot in austin can be hard. This time my husband came in and ordered the beef taco plate, enchilada plate, a side of queso, and a Mexican coke. The queso and guacamole is very good!!The manager also brought out some chips and a side of creamy jalapeño salsa, which was amazing!! Everything was really good and we would come back again. Only complaint is that it's a little pricey but definitely worth it. Laid back and casual vibe which makes this an easy spot to come to anytime.
google avatar

Joanna S.

Yelp
We came during Covid times. We were the only people on a Tuesday night at 8pm. The server / cashier was super friendly and helpful! We ordered 1 taco each and shared a guacamole side! The guacamole side comes with salsa and chips :) I asked for the creamy jalepeno salsa for my taco! IT'S A MUST HAVE!! Not too spicy and super creamy!! Giving this place a 5/5 because the place is extremely clean and the taco and guac was super tasty and flavorful! FRESH veggies and chips! Our tacos came out steaming hot! Will definitely come back!
google avatar

Yelp
Food is ok... Enchiladas had a decent taste, but lacked savory side of things. Lamb Barbacoa had a good flavor. I'd recommend that. The Taco Nes was flavorful, but not the true steak I was hoping for. More chorizo than steak ratio. Flour tortillas taste store bought and not fresh or made fresh. They have a funny taste to them. Overall the rice and beans are very bland, as well as guacamole and other items. Definitely more of a CA-style Mexican restaurant. Not true Mexican authentic or Texas-style Mexican. If you like Chuy's or Baby A's - this is your speed. I won't be back.

Hema P.

Yelp
The food is amazing The service absolutely amazing. Such friendly and patient people who work there. Most importantly the food is amazing and fresh not like other places.

Yelp
From Food Truck to Resturant! Pueblo Viejo did it again. This location opened up perfectly. The food still tastes great. It was nice to enjoy these tacos indoors. The decor is exactly what I would imagine a Pueblo Viejo dedicated Resturant would look like. Overall, excellent. Still my favorite tacos in Austin. Nice job. Recommendations: - Don Chago - Chips and Salsa - Guac - Taco Nes - Quesadilla Taco
google avatar

Ara A.

Yelp
Excellent tacos and great serving size, it's so nice to see street tacos in a decent size. I had the asada and the al pastor and to my surprise the asada was my favorite it was super tasty.
google avatar

Liam R.

Yelp
Food is acceptable. Tables are too tall for the chairs. Feels like you're a little kid.
google avatar

Randall N.

Yelp
This place has great food. Exellent al pastor ...like might be better tham Rositas. Fabulous salsa..Only taking a star off cause their margaritas are comically small. Great margarita. But the size is crazy tiny.
google avatar

Yelp
The tacos are FUEGOOOO!!! The sides are meh (specifically the retried beans and rice) - I wouldn't bother getting them unless you just want to go for a plate meal. I came here on a Sunday afternoon and got the taco bueno, migas taco, rice, refried beans, and sandia agua frescas! The aguas fresca was super good and refreshing, so I would recommend it! The food came out hot, fresh, and quickly - and delicious!! My friend like their chicken and steak tacos. I love breakfast so I stuck to breakfast tacos which there were still serving on Sunday around 12:30pm. Atmosphere - very quaint with authentic Mexican decorations on the walls and ceilings. It was pretty quiet when we got there but it got a little busier after. You order at the counter then sit wherever and get a number so your food is brought to you.

Yelp
Heard a lot about this place (though not necssarily this location) but very glad to start of the new year with some great mexican food. They got a large friendly service, good portion sizes. I tried the quesadilla taco with al pastor and a taco nes, and even in my cedar fever limited taste buds, I could still taste the delicious salty char of the meat. The quesadilla taco is a bit greasy for sure, but slather some of the spicy serrano salsa and you'll counter balance it fine. The al pastor is well seasoned and the little nibble of pineapple for some sweetness makes it a complete taco. The taco nes is a meatfest of sorts with lots of flavorful steak and chorizo - make sure you get it on corn! Your meal comes with chips and salsa too - crisp, thin topos with not too hot salsa. The rice that comes with the tacos is good too. On the slightly higher end for street tacos in Austin, but one that I'd gladly pay for to sit down and enjoy an authentic meal.

Greg A.

Yelp
Wow. This place blew us away. So fresh. So good. Everything is delicious. From the tacos and tortas right down to the small things like the rice - every dish done well. Coming back soon.
google avatar

Aaron B.

Yelp
Legit loaded tacos! Homemade corn tortillas, fresh ingredients, and deep rich flavors I'll definitely return for. Got the al pastor, steak and taco nes (steak and chorizo). All were tasty. The taco nes was the winner and packed with flavors that work well together. Somehow this place eluded me and I'm glad to have another top taco spot to visit!

Yelp
Absolutely the *BEST* tacos in town. For about 9 years, Pueblo Viejo has held strong as one of my favorite places to eat in Austin and I've followed them wherever they go. I could not be more excited that they opened a Brick and Mortar on Riverside. The owners are kind, extremely hard working have a very high standard for the food they serve. All of their locations are spot on and Riverside does not disappoint. Mother's Day brunch at the new spot exceeded my high expectations. The breakfast tacos were absolutely perfect and as usual, the service was great. I can't wait to go back!

Markus M.

Yelp
Love this place. Awesome breakfast tacos. Love the staff there. Better than most breakfasts in the area. Always chill. Not the best environment for eating in, but maybe that's only because they don't take your order at the table. I've had the dinner and thought that was good too.
google avatar

Scott E.

Yelp
These tacos were stupid good. Quesadilla Taco with Pastor meat was incredibly flavorful and delicious. These are authentic, though I opted for flour tortillas. I went off hours and they were kind, food was quick and hot, Diet Coke was cold. It was incredible.
google avatar

Blaire B.

Yelp
Super cute interior, lots of parking, and great outdoor seating. Everything is fresh and homemade, and the portions are big. LOVE the salsas. I got tacos al pastor, and they were super juicy and flavorful. My sister got a steak taco plate and even though the al pastor was some of the best I've had (and yes, I love Rosita's AND taco more), the steak might be even better I will definitely be back for margaritas and to try more tacos!!! Can't wait to report back on the breakfast tacos

Yelp
This place is for " Hipsters " food is good ,BUT HAS NO TASTE OR SEASONING... it bland , hipsters love tasteless food SMDH

Yelp
I know what love is...and it's Pueblo Viejo's tacos. Luckily for me, many of the Austin-based taco chains opened up locations in Dallas...unluckily for me, Pueblo Viejo wasn't one of them. These tacos are f***ing fuego aye aye aye. It was pretty hard for me to choose from all their different tacos so I figured I would get the two that had their namesake in them: Taco Viejo & Pueblo Viejo Style specialty taco. One breakfast taco and one lunch taco essentially. The Taco Viejo was amazing! I loved everything about it - a massive amount of chorizo, potato and eggs scrambled together on top of a slab of beans. It was almost difficult to close up the taco to eat it because Pueblo Viejo does not skimp! Same with the Pueblo Viejo Style taco - soooo much goodness I was struggling to hold it all together. The steak in the Pueblo Viejo Style taco was cooked perfectly. Y'all...I'm originally from Dallas but I've been living in New England the past 2 years and we don't have any good, authentic tacos up there. When I hopped off the plane and the first thing I bit into were these tacos I almost teared up.
google avatar

Jenna H.

Yelp
I was so excited to see a brick and mortar of Pueblo Viejo on Riverside. I was kinda disappointed with the food though. I feel like its better from the truck. Something was missing from the tacos they just didn't have that umph they normally have. I know they are new so maybe they just need to work out some kinks? I'll give them some time and come back for a 2nd try.
google avatar

Clau D.

Yelp
Just delicious, tacos and gorditas. The Taco Nes is really good, a lot of grilled onions. Quesadilla taco de pastor just like a gringa is delicious. Ordered the Gordita plate, two gorditas, beans and guacamole, perfect combination. If you love tacos, this is your place.
google avatar

Andrew M.

Yelp
New Mexican restaurant offering the Riverside area something new and delicious. I had 2 tacos lamb barbacoa and their Pueblo taco. It came with rice and beans. I also had a horchata and some chips and salsa. The tacos were STUFFED and delicious, the lamb barbacoa was lamby in every way. The Pueblo taco was steak, cheese, onions, peppers and mushrooms covered in avocado slices and a sprinkle of lettuce and tomato. Both tacos were wrapped in their homemade corn and flour tortillas. They have a 8 different hot sauces from mild to HOT to make sure everyone can get the right amount of heat on your tacos. After you're done burning your face off. You get to cool off your tongue with some of the best horchata I've had. Honestly this was a great first time for me and will definitely be back.
google avatar

Jaky Y.

Yelp
Big fan of Pueblo Viejo! I've been to all 3 locations (Riverside, 7th, and at Cosmic), and they're all great. This Riverside location is the newest, and for a while, they were offering free beers as their "happy hour." Can't go wrong with their tacos or burritos, and they have a number of different salsa offerings.
google avatar

Holly M.

Yelp
I was very hesitant to try this place because the pictures just did not do it justice. After searching and searching for authentic tacos we decided to give it a try. Wow, so glad we did. You can always tell if a place is good by its salsa and it delivered. We got tacos and enchiladas. Everything beyond fresh and was some of the best Mexican food we have had thus far in Austin. Can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Kevin K.

Yelp
This was okay. No more. On the upside, it clean with nice people. The flip side is that the food was so-so at best, with no chicken for Sunday morning dishes. Look elsewhere.
google avatar

Shu C.

Yelp
It is really a hidden gem, it is authentic and fun to eat here. Many interesting combinations. Very local and not generic at all. They have hand made tortillas. so good! Love this place! If you don't want to wait in long line during the weekend brunch time and want something fresh and healthy! Come Here!
google avatar

Jin L.

Yelp
Come here for the breakfast tacos. They make their tortillas fresh - both corn and flour. Everything comes out hot and it's a really big portion for the price. You can also pick from a bunch of homemade salsas, which all taste amazing. And you can decide based on spice level. My favorite is their migas taco. I recommend that you get it on corn (personal preference). They also serve really refreshing agua frescas that go great with the tacos!

Jordan C.

Yelp
Really good food and great atmosphere. The staff welcomed us in upon our arrival and the menu was simple yet lots of options and everything seemed tasty. My family and I ordered: chips & queso (really good), Pueblo Viejo Style Taco, Lamb Barbacoa Taco, Al Pastor Taco, Quesadilla plate, and Mexican Salad with Horchata. Everything was delicioso, but the best was Al Pastor
google avatar

Claire C.

Yelp
Found this hidden gem while looking for some great tacos. Pueblo Viejo Riverside did not disappoint! Service was super quick and the staff was kind and helpful. There was no wait, which is shocking because it was so amazing, and the inside of the restaurant is super neat! Best tacos ever. I'll be back super soon, so yummy!

Yelp
Delicious tacos with fresh ingredients. Great music playlist in the background. Colorfully decorated with beautiful painted murals. Friendly staff. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Delicious food, great staff, very clean, aaaaand they play The Office while you eat! I ordered a barabcao taco and a bacon potato egg and cheese - they did not disappoint!

Yelp
By far the best breakfast tacos I have ever had. Friendly warm service, complimentary refreshing water with lime near the salsa stand, and the inside of this place was clean and perfect. Wonderful job Pueblo Viejo!!!!

Yelp
INCREDIBLE PLACE!!!! Food is so good, restaurant is clean, would recommend to everyone! :)

Yelp
SO good! I heard raving reviews about the one inside North Door so I was excited to try out the new Riverside location closer to my house. I had the Pueblo Viejo Style on flour. Very generous taco beautifully plated. Lots of steak, lots of perfectly ripe (how?!) avocado and lots of cheese. I was full after 1. Under $5.00. Roommate has the quesadilla tacos. Holy cheese! It's like a thick quesadilla that just isn't cut in slices. He could only eat one as well. Under $5.00. We got the queso which was $8 and it was just average. Nothing special. The salsa that came with it was so fresh and delicious. They also have 5 or 6 self serve salsas for your tacos. The two green ones were my fav. The habenero and chipotle ones lit me up. They have the cutest BIG coffee mugs that are $5.00!! It's a really nice mug that would easily be $20 somewhere else. They don't really advertise them but you can see them behind the counter. And thennnn as I'm paying at the counter I see a "happy hour starts at 3" sign and turns out they give you free beers (2 limit) starting at 3! Ha! They don't sell alcohol but I thought more people should know that secret. Anywhoo! Very much recommend. I know there breakfast tacos have to be bomb. I'll be back.

Morgan S.

Yelp
Such a great place, everyone was so kind!! The food was so good and the mango margarita was the best margarita I've ever had!!
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
stopped by sunday morning as a first timer and was not disappointed! wish we took pictures when we received our food but we devoured it immediately because of how good it looked. we tried the taco bueno, taco viejo, taco don chato, and an horchata. everything had a great authentic taste. definitely looking forward to coming back to try other menu items!
google avatar

Trish Y.

Yelp
Got the specialty plate. Got the Al Pastor, which was delicious and the PV Style which was steak and mushrooms...think this might be a good taco if my meat would not have been burnt and jerky style. The rice was light and nice and it was served with some shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes. I also got Jamiaca with some Limeade which was not too sweet, which I was worried about. I was there during the beginning of lunch hour and they were busy. The poor gal working the register was also waiting on tables and helping the kitchen as well as delivering the food to the tables. So for as busy as it was I will definitely try them again.
google avatar

Yelp
I visited Pueblo Viejo for breakfast and really enjoyed my plate. I also love the chips and fresh salsa. The service was wonderful and the server was very friendly and attentive. I would definitely come back here for breakfast or to try more of their plates.
