11 Sustainable Hotels That Are Setting a New Standard in Hospitality

"Eco focus: Solar smarts This otherworldly brick-and-concrete Tetris is set in the scrub—surf, jungle and mountains softening its monolithic edges. It is pitch-perfect beach modernism for the 21st century from Grupo Habita, the Mexican hotel outfit that has eschewed faceless resorts for something new and sustainable. Terrestre is fully solar powered. Passive cooling and native planting invite birds and butterflies. There are 14 rooms in the main building and guests socialize in a large alfresco restaurant where chefs prepare plantain patties and herby salads. Punta Pájaros, a 40-minute drive from Puerto Escondido, was once the reserve of fishermen and surfers. Now digital entrepreneurs and Californian mini-breakers seek upmarket cultural stays, and Terrestre Hotel is part of the forward-facing new options. (More on that, here.) The Evolving Allure of Puerto Escondido on Oaxaca’s Coast

"Back at Punta Pájaros that afternoon, I moved over to another property, Hotel Terrestre, the most recent to open and by far the most theatrical, with 15 rooms connected in an angular monolith of brick. There is a temescal, a massage area, and a strong whiff of modern wellness. Terrestre is completely solar-powered, with no air-conditioning anywhere, a bold move for an expensive hotel and perhaps a sly act of preservation of both the land and that essence Sodi had spoken to me about."

Punta Pajoros is probably the best place I've ever been. There are no words to summise how magical our stay was. From the unmatched welcome and service, to accommodating a small issue (not their fault) immediately- this place is run flawlessly. it's safe and serene and you get just the right about of human interaction everyday. The cafe food was so tasty and fresh and they always made sure to make any special requests happen (we celebrated a birthday here). We stayed in the cabin with the platform and watched the humongous red sun rise and set everyday. The drive from Escondido was easy, a small sand/dirt road for the last 10 mins, parking was ample, we were doted on the entire time. We saw whales from the beach (beware the water is not swimmable past your knees). Absolute heaven on earth and we can't wait to come back. This place is very special and quietly luxurious, with all the touches you'd expect at an eco resort. I thank the wonderful team there for the most incredible stay. 🫂

Lovely and friendly staff. The restaurant is amazing and I would recommend you to eat here even if you’re not staying in one of the villas. Great music selection and ambience. The best value/service we’ve had during our stay in Puerto Escondido. 10/10.

Gorgeous venue. Cons: it did not have a/c as it was an ecological resort so it was very hot at times; no room service, it was kind of in between an airbnb and a hotel; bumpy road to get to, it would benefit from arrangements because it was hard to drive by. Pros: great ambience, quiet, nice and clean cabin; delicious food (prices were good for the quality and the portions); friendly and efficient staff; awesome private pool and views of the beach. Overall, a cool place to go for a couple of weeks to relax.

Excellent location and lovely open rooms, sufficiently separated to feel private. The heat can get extreme but just about bearable with the fans and pool. The restaurant is superb, catering for us as vegetarians without issue. Isabelle (who was in charge during our stay) was incredibly helpful. Our only small issue was the Wi-Fi which whilst superb in the restaurant, doesn't reliably reach the villas. Impairs comms on the WhatsApp channel and is so easy to fix. Cell coverage is just as bad, so you're pretty much off grid in at least our villa.

What a wonderful hidden gem. Our wood cabin was nestled in amongst the bush land with a gorgeous and basically secluded beach on our door step. If you’re after a complete detox in eco style, look no further than Punta Pajaros!

One of my favorite places. The first time we were here in February 2022 and in November 2022 came for the second time. Beautiful architecture from Alberto Kalach. Each villa is surrounded by landscape so you don't notice your neighbors. Fresh and tasty food. Very friendly and polite staff.

Discovering Punta Pajaros was a delightful surprise! Tucked away in the midst of nature, our cozy cabin was a perfect retreat. With practically a private beach just steps away from our cabin it added more beautiful feelings to this hidden gem. For those seeking a total detox in an eco-friendly setting, Punta Pajaros is the ultimate destination!
