Stellar Pupatella Pizzeria Expects to Open Its Second Arlington Location Next Week - Eater DC

"Pupatella, the certified Neapolitan-style pizzeria that has been churning out destination brick-oven pies, arancini, and gelato at its original Arlington location since 2010, expects to open its second shop in the Northern Virginia hamlet next week. Partner Anastasiya Laufenberg tells ARLnow that she and Enzo Algarme are training staff at 1621 S. Walter Reed Drive and “should” start selling pizza there next week. The new pizzeria, formerly an Ethiopian restaurant, is just off South Glebe Road, not far from Army Navy Country Club and the Arlington Cinema Draft House. The space, which was originally slated to open this summer, is 2,200 square feet and includes a 40-seat covered patio area. Formerly a food truck, Pupatella is in the midst of an expansion stemming from a $3.75 million round of fundraising. The brand has franchised two locations in the Richmond area and eventually plans to open eight pizzerias in the next few years. Founding partner Michael Berger told Eater in the spring that Pupatella already has a lease for a third Northern Virginia shop, at 1821 Wiehle Avenue in Reston." - Gabe Hiatt

Google
We were driving around Arlington VA, when we passed Pupatella Neapolitan pizza. So we decided to stop in because we were looking for a good local restaurant that was different than something we had in Texas! So he decided to give it a try. My husband and son decided to have the margarita pizza and my daughter and I had the mushroom Pizza. They were spectacular. They are thin crust pizzas and they are about 11 in. We were able to share with two pizzas. Two good size pieces each. But for some you might want to eat one hole and have leftovers. Or you may want to order a whole and eat it all. It is thin crust, but we were stopping by other places for snacks later. The crust was delicious. The sauces were wonderful. I would encourage you to stop by and support this local pizza place. Tables were set beautifully with plates and wine glasses. So it had a more formal feel to it but also a casual feel to it. Ella, which one did you choose the chocolate birthday cake one sounds really good. Good job.

Google
The pizza is amazing. Real Neapolitan kind of pizza, delicious dough and fresh ingredients. Also the selection of non-alcoholic cocktails is impressive. If it would be just about the food - this place deserves five stars! But then the service. The waitress was helpful and did everything right, but it was lacking a smile and some warmth. We were the only two guests at the restaurant during the day in the afternoon and the staff had some celebration. Yay for that, but they were celebrating just next to us and they were really loud. At moments that loud that we couldn’t keep a conversation with my friend. And then the toilets. There are two and both weee occupied by staff members. I understand that sometimes when it’s a time, it’s a time. So I was waiting to wash my hands. But they were occupied for at least 10 minutes or so, clearly someone was taking a break, so I left the restaurant with dirty hands.

Google
I went here for happy hour and Angelica was our server for our large group. She was very attentive and kind. The pizza was delicious and the gelato was great! I would definitely return in the future! My only complaint is about the restaurant; there was no AC and it was over 90 degrees outside. We were all sweating and hot. Management should definitely fix this issue.

Google
Exceptional pizza and lovely service. We are frequent flyers at this location and absolutely love it. Last night we enjoyed fried mozzarella, Italian bread + marinara, pizza, and a delicious fried dough with Nutella and pistachio for dessert. Absolutely delicious!

Google
We ordered a pizza with pepperoncini, but it didn't come with pepperoncini... we ordered spaghetti, but it didn't have any sauce when it came, and it was just a bowl of plain spaghetti... We was really 😮

Charles

Google
Great Napoleon style pizza, very light and airy. I would definitely recommend.

Google
The place is easily accessible. We ordered Margarita DOC and Filleti DOC for two. Great service and atmosphere. What is more warming than seeing parents sharing slices with their kids… Simply sharing the traditions!

Google
My family has been coming here for many years and it has always been great I love their pizza Gelato, and mozzarella balls ( I did not get this past time) and the staff is nice and kind however I do wish the gelato portions were a bit bigger. Otherwise I enjoyed!

Yelp
Stopped in on a whim looking to grab a pie. I'm very glad I did as the pizza was delicious. Sadly, I ate it too quickly, so I wasn't able to grab a picture. The staff and service were also top-notch!

Nevaeh P.

Yelp
Stopped in tonight for dinner with my family, and the staff was so accommodating for our larger party. The service was super quick and the food came out fresh hot and delicious. Some favorites were the meatball pizza and the panzarotti. This is a definite must try! The cocktails were awesome as well, they were featuring a martini special for only $5. We will definitely be returning again soon. Thanks for the great experience Pupatella and staff

Ashley B.

Yelp
Fantastic pizza!! Great local spot, wonderful staff and nice ambiance. Love the mimosa and Diablo pizza. Yum!

Catherine L.

Yelp
The pizza is nonpareil I prefer the white pizza with pesto and walnuts. My companion loves the panzarotti and prosciutto arugula pizza. I was served by NEVAEH who was friendly, sweet, fun to talk to and ever do competent. I confess that we have sampled almost everything on the me num Nutella pizza with refreshing green apples is a fun twist -- but the TIRAMISU BEATS everyone in this area...i just returned from PARK SLOPE BROOKLYN and this pizza joint can stand up to any 'novel' pizza in WILLIAMSBURG.

Yelp
So. One night decided to take a trip to Pupatella. The two of us decided to sit outside and eat best and pepperoni pizza. Had hush puppy-like appetizer and the bruschetta. In Germany I had bruschetta from a little Italian restaurant... years ago. It is the measurement of all bruschetta for me. This place is a 8/10 on that scale. Too many tomato's, too little servings. 4 vs 6. But still really good. Sitting on the front seats provided a chill atmosphere and theater of the Arlington Traffic at the X intersection. Really nice at sunset on a cool day. Service is kinda a quandary. Great at first and tailed off to the point of seeking out the staff to pay the bill. I kinda rather the food and chill without a helicopter-like waitstaff so I'm not offended. Sitting out front eating a pizza is even more so. I enjoyed it. Coke products on fountain as mixtures on point.

Yelp
Service: (0/5) I have never had worse service in my life. We got there and it was fine. When I asked to pay some on the card and some with cash, the waitress was annoyed. While it is more difficult, I didn't think it was a big deal. I counted the cash in front of her and my entire party, but when she took it off the bill, it was miscounted. I politely told her that it wasn't correct and she said she would check. She threw my credit card back at me when she was going back, which to me is very disrespectful. It is the equivalent of throwing money at someone's feet. We asked for a receipt and she proceeded to do other things. We weren't going to wait 15 mins to get a receipt so we ended up leaving. Ambiance: (5/5) Great indoor and outdoor seating. Price: (3/5) prices are a bit expensive for the portion size. Food: (3/5) We got the eggplant pizza and margarita pizza. The eggplant was a bit bitter unfortunately. The margarita and classica seem to be the same and the waitress definitely uosold us even though she couldn't explain the difference. The sauces on both were pretty bland. I will say I enjoyed the amount of cheese in the margarita. Usually it's not enough at any other place I go to.

Yelp
Party of 9 for a work lunch on a Tuesday. They don't take reservations but seating wasn't an issue, eat on the covered patio out front. Server was friendly and attentive with our large group and even split the checks for us so we could pay individually. Pizzas were hot, fresh and delicious. Italian margarita was a bit lackluster, tasted like a mix, and no sugared rim which was disappointing. Spinach pizza and Napoli salad were super flavorful.

Yelp
I love this place. I love the food, I love the service. True neapolitan pizza. In a classic modern pizzeria ambience.

Yelp
Visited pupatella's this evening for the first time, cute little place with a very relaxing and laid back atmosphere. We got the mozzarella balls and they were so good, gooey and warm, I wish we got more but for $7 in Arlington it makes sense. We did 2 make your own pizzas but did not go over the 4 ingredient suggestion. Overall pizzas were pretty good, great sauce and ingredients, highly recommend getting bacon and sausage both were very good. Also the ricotta was our favorite for the cheese! The only complaint I had was the pizza was extremely floppy and soggy bottom, Neapolitan pizza is known for a thin crust which I love but it good have been a little more crusted as the pizza slid off every time I picked up a slice. We would definitely come again though!

Jake B.

Yelp
Blows my mind they don't pick up their phone within 45 minutes of closing. This has happened on multiple occasions... The time I walked over to order in person, I was just stared at and not welcomed.

Yelp
Amazing place! Great food! Wonderful customer service. The manager James is the best.

John Lee J.

Yelp
This was my second time having there pizza and guess what they definitely did not disappoint the pizza was hot had great flavor I highly recommend if you have not had there pizza you need to you WILL NOT!!!! Be disappointed I promise you the management and the server staff are out of this world I just want to say thank you to this establishment for making my time there very memorable

Yelp
Ordered twice while I was in town in business. SO DELICIOUS!! I will definitely order again if I'm in town for work.

Yelp
My family and I had a great time at Pupatella. Our server Angelica was absolutely amazing. She provided my difficult mother various options to suit her vegetarian lifestyle. This is this first time we dined here. We will be back!
google avatar

Maha S.

Yelp
This did not live up to the hype. I ordered the meatball pizza for takeout. When I got home I discovered there were barely 3-4 meatballs (cut into small pieces) on the whole pizza. One slice literally only had a tiny piece of meat on it... See picture I've added. I expected way better quality and quantity for what I heard about this place. Service was good and staff was friendly.
google avatar

Sonya M.

Yelp
This pizza was so good! Our waiter was super friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and never hesitated to give us his own recommendations on what was good. The inside is not super big, so usually good to go with a smaller group. I love a good brick oven pizza, and this is definitely on my top 5 list.
google avatar

Nijole T.

Yelp
The pizza here is fantastic and very well priced! Service was great, food was ready to order quickly. They have a good variety of appetizers and sides as well. Ideal place for family or a casual lunch or dinner, there's something for everyone. The pizza was high quality, and a great size, highly recommend it!
google avatar

Dave U.

Yelp
Online service was perfect. Easy to use website. Timing was clunky because it said our pies would be ready in 5 minutes. But we still ordered and asked for a later time to account for the drive time. Pizza was excellent. I ordered the sausage and onion. The crust was so fresh and crispy but not too hard. I personally was not a fan of the sautéed onions but that's an opinion. They cut the pie into 4 slices. I ate the entire pie. Parking in the area was east. Location conveniently near Glebe. Ambiance was respective of a pizza joint.

Yelp
A delightful afternoon! Fantastic staff- Meeka and friends will make sure you feel welcome! Everything is wonderful!

Yelp
Was craving pizza and this spot has the highest rating in the neighborhood, where apparently even Time Out has mentioned it as a top spot in Arlington (I'm new to Arlington haha). It's also hard to find a sit down pizza spot in the area so I was pleased that they have both indoor and outdoor seating. There isn't much to note on the "ambiance" besides that it's very neighborhood/community oriented with some screens showing pizza being made live in their open kitchen. The service was lukewarm, in that although they were adequately staffed, our server had to be tagged and I had to ask for water about 3 times because no one was really offering to refill our glasses (like a busser or the server themselves). I'm not sure if this is just poor staff training, but if a customer has an empty glass and you don't offer to refill it or just refill it, but come over and ask "if everything is okay"--the answer is that it's not okay. It's not okay because my glass is empty and has been empty and you don't seem to realize what you should do about it. Anyway, the saving grace is the food. I can see why it got such high reviews! The freshly hand spun pizza was excellent. The Margherita for me is always the standard--if you can make a basic pizza taste good then you've got fresh ingredients and a good recipe. I love the thin crust and the crispy edges. Would come back just for the pizza! We also ordered some other things like pizza balls (over a dollar for each tiny ball so value wise not great), fried risotto balls (my first time trying them!) and some liquor which I found too sweet and not cold enough (a chilled shot glass would've made it 10x better).

Ayon's Time I.

Yelp
This is a Uber order 06/09/2024 .I went to pick the food around 5:10 .I have told by the manager(Tall Black gay person )the order will take 15-20 minutes I said ok.Later I found out the order already finished by 5:16. But I kept asking manger to hat happened to my order he didn't am even check all he said take another 15 minutes. But the order already packed by 5:16 pm. He give me the bag around 5:32 look at the picture with Uber ticket. They make me wait 20 minutes for no reason .This is not professional management at all. The reason most of theirs locations are closed. Need Professional manger ASAP or not turn it down if you can't track the online order very simple.

Yelp
I ordered pepperoni pizza delivery to my hotel from DoorDash. Not only did the pizza arrive hot and fresh, the pizza tasted INCREDIBLE! Just like an east coast pizza is supposed to taste! Pizza was decent price, even on DoorDash. When I come back to the area, this will be my go to pizza place! Sorry no pictures- I ate the pizza too fast!

Yelp
While I frequent the North Arlington location, this was my first time at this one. I visited Tuesday evening to take advantage of the Valentine's Day deal for 2. Before I get into the nitty-gritty, I do want to say that the restaurant was extremely understaffed-- especially for a night with such a popular deal-- and the employees were giving 120% and doing everything they could for how understaffed it was. I applaud them! That said, let's get into it. We arrived around 6:45pm and spent about 15 minutes waiting in line to order our food before sitting outside since there was a 30 min+ wait for inside. So far so good. After waiting for 45 minutes, only having receiving the limoncello we ordered, and no food, we approached a staff member to make sure we weren't forgotten. Turns out that the printer had broken and our order was seemingly lost. Our appetizer-- brussels sprouts-- was brought out almost immediately and we were told our pizzas were bumped to the top of the queue. We waited probably another 15 minutes for the pizzas. Then, our dessert never arrived. We followed up with two separate employees, and watched as other guests received the same dessert that we had ordered while waiting. Ultimately we didn't receive our dessert until around 8:30, and we asked for it to-go since we had already been waiting so long. Finally, some comments on the food itself. The pizza was fantastic as always-- we ordered the Margherita DOC and the Caivano. Both were incredibly fresh and tasty, the dough was perfection, and had a good amount of toppings. The limoncello was another standout for me. However, the brussels sprouts had too much balsamic dressing, to the point of burning when swallowing-- they were cooked perfectly otherwise-- and the angioletti fritti (fritters) we ordered for dessert were much too chewy. Overall, a disappointing experience for a restaurant I typically really enjoy!

Yelp
I ordered delivery, the pizza was very good!. I had to warmed it up, but it was delicious sauce and dough. Definitely will repeat pizza from this place. It is one of the places certified with Neopolitan pizza!!. Also, I had the arugula, prosciutto, and parmigiano cheese salad, simply good!!

Karina P.

Yelp
Angelica is the best server on the floor. She is always attentive and brings out the food on time. I always get the mozzarella balls and zucchini fries as an appetizer and the mimosa pizza with a lemonade. will be looking forward to seeing her again.
google avatar

Ryan S.

Yelp
Easily one of the best wood fired pizza spots in DC! Have tried several different ones and all have been awesome. Whether dining in or carrying out, it does not disappoint. Always my go-to for a good, quick meal.
google avatar

Katie W.

Yelp
Delicious pizza with soft, doughy crust! Personal favorite is the mimosa pizza (but recommend substituting the ham for prosciutto). Great for take out or dining in
google avatar

Cathryn F.

Yelp
I ordered take out from here about 8 months ago. I ordered the cheese pizza and it was somehow burnt and soggy in the middle. So, I decided to try Pupatella again hoping that it was just an off night. A few nights ago I ordered the exact same thing and again the pizza was a bit burnt and soggy in the middle.
google avatar

Norry H.

Yelp
A perfect experience from the first visit! Came here today after stopping by at a nearby animal shelter. I didn't know there was a Pupatella in this area too. They are everywhere these days! That's great. As soon as we found a spot to park, in one of maybe like 10 parking spots on the premises, I ordered online. It was 12:44pm. When I got inside to pick up at 1:00pm which they promised, the two pizza pies were ready and the arrancinis were just done. Perfect! We brought them home and enjoyed. The crust was so good and the Buffalo mozzarella was wonderful. The sausage arrancinis were satisfying. I think I will stick with Pupatella from now on.
google avatar

Yelp
Our meal this evening was SO delicious!! I loved the leoncelll spritz!! Caprese salad & bruschetta was amazing! We also quite enjoyed the Margherita and Caivano pizzas! Angelica provided us great service and we will be back soon!

Yelp
Food was very good and came out in a decent amount of time. Plus our server Angelica was amazing. Will make sure to come again.

Yelp
I forgot my favorite shirt with the saying: "wish you were pizza" but was pleasantly surprised to see the "pizza addicts only" on the door which gave me a good chuckle. I met up with my friend who wanted to eat a salad and I countered with wanting pizza and suggested, "why don't you get your salad, on your pizza? You could call it Salizza" I mean I thought it was rather witty but after looking at instagram it's really a thing and sadly I can't take ownership. But I digress, let me get to the important parts, the meal: I ordered the fried mozzarella balls to start, the sauce was great 10/10, but the balls were cold which was a huge disappointment. Still, I ate them, they weren't cold like frozen cold they just weren't even warm. The pepperoni, tasted great, but it tasted very salty and I don't understand why. The dough wasn't burnt too much, a perfect blend between burnt pieces and un burnt. (The last time I ate Neapolitan pizza, the dough was charred and I've been scarred ever since) My friend ate his salizza without any issues, so if that's your thing he said it was delicious. The interior has a classic pizza shop feel, great decor, not too many tables but it has a bar and outdoor patio. You walk up to order and they bring you your pizza. Some may scoff at this but I like it. The bathrooms were clean and the staff was polite and friendly. My only issues were they don't have Caesar salads, and the mozzarella balls were cold.
google avatar

Brian D.

Yelp
Fast service, quality food and service. Angelica was a great server! I was visiting from Oklahoma and she waited on me twice. Just fantastic!

Katherine L.

Yelp
I've tried Pupatella at two locations. Each time the pizza is luck warm, can only be eaten with fork and knife because the crust is so thin/greasy, and the toppings immediately slide off making it difficult to eat overall. Not much taste to the pizza. I've had frozen pizzas from the supermarket that are better. Lastly, the first time I visited they got the order wrong. The second visit, the waitress was slow and I had to ask for utensils. I'm flummoxed by all the good reviews. I won't be back. Highly overrated in my opinion.
google avatar

Jim F.

Yelp
Quick seating and good service, plenty of parking, thin crusted pizza cooked to perfection. Inside and outside seating, delivery too. We can walk there and do.

Meredith S.

Yelp
My family has tried 4 different pizzas on two different trips [thinking the first must have been a fluke given how highly everyone speaks of Pupatella's] and all four have been SOGGY.
google avatar

Scott W.

Yelp
Last night was my second time and better than the first. The place is clean with seating inside and outside. Weather was cool so we sat outside (covered and semi-enclosed) to enjoy our evening. I also appreciate they have free parking. My wife got the eggplant (again) and red bell pepper while I got the caivano. Very flavorful. For an appetizer, we tried the Arancini with sausage. Sooo good.
google avatar

Amber K.

Yelp
Great tasting pizza, lots of topping options. The pizza can be made vegan without cheese. The onions were phenomenal. My only issue is the center was a little soggy, but otherwise good.
google avatar

Jenn G.

Yelp
I've never been here before and heard that the pizza was some of the best. There was a girl taking our order and she seemed new maybe, so she was asking another employee to describe to us a particular menu item and it was just weird. After he condescendingly described it they exchanged looks with each other like we were already annoying them and being complicated. I didn't get it. It wasn't necessarily the worst service I've ever had, just strange and passive aggressive. I even heard her say to the other employee when he gave us our first order "well how did that go?" After I heard that it REALLY turned me off. We didn't complain when the food came out but I'm not touching food if the people serving me have an attitude with me. They made it easy though, when my pizza came out it was super soggy, I'm not eating that lol. We really didn't want to cause a scene, we were just like "okay, never coming here again." The only nice thing was that an older guy with a beard came over and asked us how everything was and saw the pizza and seemed really friendly, sweet and understanding. I really appreciated his efforts, but some of that staff was just rude, I don't think I could ever bring myself to go back there.

Chris A.

Yelp
Pupatella is great! I always get 2 pizzas and the mozzarella balls. It is a little pricey but always comes out perfect!

Ryan C.

Yelp
First time at this location but have been to the Wilson Blvd location plenty of times. It's been a while since we've been so I was glad we drove by and picked some up. Placed an order around an hour before closing. There was plenty of parking since it was so late but the spots are tight and I assume it fills up quick so be careful. We ordered the Burrata and Onion Tart pizzas. Took a second to get because it seemed like a lot of orders were still coming in. It was pretty much perfect. Crust was nice and thin, no lack of toppings, but not soggy or heavy. Great for dinner and had enough left for lunch the next day. Location is a little more convenient for me so might be heading here more often.

Yelp
I have had Pupatella more times than I am willing to admit and I am finally leaving a review. To go: Throughout the pandemic I would order online through their website and pick it up at the front. Super easy and they are very efficient. My order was always correct. My drive home is only about 5 mins or so but the steam inside the box can make the middle of the pizza wet. Still delicious nonetheless! Crust is crispy and thin. Dine-in: I finally ate in person at Pupatella after a year and the pizza is even better when you eat it straight out of the oven. I sat outside and felt comfortable with the distance of the tables and the staff was masked. As far as the margaritas, they were delicious but reminded me more of a Paloma than a margarita. Parking: limited, but most people are coming in to pick up and leaving. Staff: always courteous, kind and helpful. My current go-to pizzas: the Diavolo (for those who love spice) and the Burrata (has no sauce, but lots of yummy mozzarella cheese!)

Yelp
We absolutely love brick oven pizza and drove 60 min to come have a slice or 2! Great outdoor seating was very refreshing after the drive. We would definitely recommend for all your pizza cravings

Carol L.

Yelp
Great pizza and nice waiters. We look forward to the Pupatella that is coming to Alexandria.

Yelp
I frequented the North Arlington location and this was the first time attending the 2nd location in South Arlington. The pick up process was surprisingly smooth (despite the small parking lot) and I was satisfied that the flavors were on point, just like in N. Arlington. Pizza 5/5 - Yes, it's not cheap. And my favorite would still have to be the burrata pizza with pine nuts and basil for its subtle yet fresh and impactful flavor. Today I tried the Sausage & Onion Pizza (4.5) and the Mimosa Pizza (5). Perhaps I'm partial to white pizza but it was definitely a good blend of flavors - creamy and salty. The arancini (sausage) (4.5) was excellent as well and kept its crunch until every last bite. Service/Cleanliness: 4.5/5 - The service is seamless at the window though my experience is limited to pickup.

Mary Jane W.

Yelp
Pupatella is our neighborhood pizza go-to! The food and the service are top notch. During a recent visit for take out - which wasn't quite ready - I opted for a libation at the bar. Meeka, the bartender, was delightful and a great conversationalist. Can't go wrong with Pupatella on S Glebe.

Christine K.

Yelp
Eric was a very nice and hard working server. He made us laugh and the food was amazing.

Michael T.

Yelp
Pizza was great as always, a little chaotic as the place was packed as usual at that time in the evening. Only outdoor seating was available. Really need to install some "heat source " if people are to be sitting out there. Service was outstanding by Alejandra G. Super friendly, attentive, great sense of humor and the consummate prof! Really look forward to having her serve us again! All in all, a wonderful experience

Anonymous A.

Yelp
Not sure what all the fuss is about. I was expecting the pizza to be crisp, but it was rather soggy. I expect that in the rush to servcie everyone, they didn't leave the pizza in the oven long enough. Anyway, it was tasty, but I was looking forward to a crispy pizza with a brown crust and that's not what I received.
