Yelp
"Must-visit" place if you're from or grew up in western India.
Growing up in Bombay (they call it Mumbai now) I am very familiar with Bombay Street Food (batata vada, pav bhaji) as well as traditional Maharashtrian snacks and sweets like misal pav, Sabudana Khichdi, modak (believed to be a favorite of Lord Ganesh) and of course, the reason we were here - puranpoli, after which the restaurant is named.
We were a large group of 8 college friends, meeting after a few months, and we ordered family style. I grabbed a chai, even though it was well past my caffeine curfew, just for old times sake, and started sampling the food as it was brought out to us.
I enjoyed all the dishes. But hands down my favorite, besides the puranpoli of course (which is more like a dessert than a snack), was the Pav Bhaji.
This famous street food from the beloved city I grew up In, is a vegetable curry (bhaji) primarily composed of potato, tomato, and loads of butter. Even the bread (pav) is buttered and then grilled on the pan (tava) which makes it delish!
The puranpoli came last, but was well worth the wait. It was warm, sweet, stuffed with the distinctive jaggery and lentil filling specific to western India.
The bill was a reasonable $25 each. The service was fast, though I've heard that's not always the case. Parking lot was tight but manageable. Bathrooms were clean.
I'll be back.
