The Best Latin American Food in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Que Bacano is one of the most popular carts at Portland Mercado, likely because Colombian food is scarce in the city. It serves the holy trinity of arepas, empanadas, and patacones, as well as bigger entrees like arroz con pollo and the bandeja paisa, a traditional hefty platter of rice, soupy pork-filled beans, plantains, sausage, chicharrones, fried egg, avocado, plus an arepa."

Where to Find Excellent Empanadas Across the Portland Area | Eater Portland

"Owned by Columbian expats Andres Felipe Perez and Karen Castaneda, this food cart next door to Alecocina serves traditional Columbian cuisine like patacones and almojabanas. Filled with ample shredded beef, the star of the cart’s empanada is the crispy, golden-fried corn crust. The mildly spicy tomato onion salsa that comes on the side adds a welcome tang to the beef filling, as well. Que Bacano offers takeout, and the Portland Mercado offers outdoor seating for those who want to stay."

I really really loved this place! The owners were so friendly and had great recommendations for us for our first time eating there. The ambiance of the restaurant to me was so comfortable and homey. The food had great flavor and depth. The Arepas were there best I have ever had! So much flavor! The Yucas Fritas were also awesome. The sauces they paired them with were wonderfully fresh and matched very well with the fried yuca. My friend had the Vegan Plate and absolutely loved it. She loved how there were so many different flavors and textures. She said each bite was different and loved pairing the accompanying sauces with it to get a unique experience with each bite. She barely spoke when she ate! I loved the Estofado de carne. It was incredibly flavorful, delicious, and very comforting. The Mojito was soooooo good! I could have kept those going all night! We tried the Cola & Pola and omg what a treat! I have never had anything like that before and found a new fave! We also loved the Colombiana, which to me tasted like a not as sweet version of a cream soda. I suspect they use real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup and it makes all the difference! We will definitely be back to try more of the menu!

Google
Que Bacano was a great find! The food is packed with flavor, especially the empanadas! If you're 21 and over.. try the Pola Y Cola... mind blown! Beer and soda mixed together bit it tastes like a cream soda and has a dry finish like a cider... I wanted more

Google
I found this hidden gem while visiting portland and was so happy to find a place that would bring me back home. We started with patacones with beef as appetizers and as maine course mojarra and Sobrebarriga with a side of avocado salad. It was delicious, the patacones had a lot of flavor and the cilantro on top of the beef was a good touch. The mojarra came with rice and salad same as the sobrebarriga. The avocado salad was great too and the dressing had their own personal touch. The juices where delicious and fresh as well And the service was great, really friendly and they accommodate my dog in their patio.

Google
Delicious and authentic Colombian food. Nice friendly service. My wife and I lived in bogota together for 2 years and this is the closest we’ve found to authentic Colombian food stateside. The Sobrebarriga beef was my favorite.

Google
I don’t have any Colombian restaurants where I live and took advantage of eating Colombian food on my trip to the Pacific Northwest. I ordered the bandeja paisa and it was very delicious!! Fresh and cooked to order and has great Colombian ambiance Add this restaurant to your must try Portland restaurant list.

Google
I loved the food! The picada and the bandeja paisa were delicious! I would definitely come back! The Aji and everything was great. This Colombian restaurant has a very good atmosphere. It wasn't crowded the day I went there and the service was ok. I wish they were more welcoming, but still, I had a great time in this place.

laura montana

Google
Best place I've had in years! Only note would be the chorizo for the bandeja Paisa was more hot dog than chorizo flavor wise but everything else yum! The beans were surprisingly good(those are hard to get right)

Google
I ordered the chicken empanadas to go and was very pleased with the flavor, just a little oily 😋 I was surprised there were no guests there during the lunch hour on a Friday and thought it looked dimly lit from the outside of the restaurant and questioned if it was open.

Yelp
This was our second round ordering here. We had it delivered so I can't speak to the restaurant itself. I will say that the restaurant did call me when the delivery service picked up the food to let me know it was on the way. Food was ready on time. The Sobrebarriga en Salsa Criolla was exceptional. The flank steak was very tender and well seasoned. The potatoes, plantains and rice made this a great dish. The Arepa Rellena with pork was also wonderful. The pork was cooked spot on and absolutely delicious. The Choriarepa had great flavor and a great appetizer. The Yuca Frita was good and the sauces added to give flavor. We'll continue to give Que Bacano our patronage

Yelp
Wonderful, all around! I highly recommend the Arroz Atollado -- very flavorful! My friend got the Avocado Salad, which doesn't sound particularly extraordinary, but was surprisingly excellent.

Marielsa P.

Yelp
El servicio, comida y bebidas definitivamente lo mejor que eh probado. Amazing place, for sure I'll come back.

Ronan N.

Yelp
Anyone leaving a bad review for this place is either lying to themselves or simply doesn't understand how the restaurant works. Many complain about the service. This is not a sit down restaurant! You go up to the counter when you want to order. With that out of the way, the food is absolutely delicious and very authentic. The ambience of the restaurant is amazing and they have cool Colombian snacks to buy as well. Service is fine and food comes out fine, but as I said you order at the counter so please do not go here and then complain about that.

Yelp
Delicious! Best plantains in Portland. This restaurant has great food and lots of options for all diets. I was able to find fantastic vegetarian options, and the meat eaters in my party also really enjoyed their dinner. The margaritas are good, too!

Yelp
Out just playing around and need to a late lunch. We randomly walked into Que Bacano and had a fun experience! Having never had Columbian food before, I can't speak to it's authenticity but it was yummy and hit the spot! The food came in relatively short time, but it wasn't busy when we walked in. The service was friendly and she did a good job paying attention to us and our drinks. I will totally go back in, when up in the area and hungry again!

Yelp
Delicious fresh patecones, fun environment, authentic Colombian food. Really nice service. Love it!

Lori F.

Yelp
The pollo a la criolla and Ajiaco Bogotano were excellent. Even my picky 13 yo enjoyed the food. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Lovina H.

Yelp
Delicious! I recommend the empanada and the estofado de carne (I had chicken). My hubs had arroz con pollo which he liked better w some salsa.
google avatar

Isabella A.

Yelp
Delicious unique food! Loved the patacones, Maduros, and and arroz mixto. Really nice outdoor seating. Super friendly service. Will definitely be back. Thank you!
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Authentic and friendly staff made the experience delightful. The chicken Arepas were delicious.I'll be back!

Paul G.

Yelp
Why have an outdoor speaker on all day long? Play it inside for you and your customers. The neighbors don't want to hear your bass driven music 8-10 hours a day. Extremely inconsiderate and annoying. I get it during the Hawthorne street fair but every day and even in the winter? Come on you guys, I didn't hire a DJ.
google avatar

Alisha S.

Yelp
I lived in Colombia and it is rare to find an authentic place. This was it. The empanadas were delicious. The frijoles were amazing. My only complaint is that they only gave a fourth of an arepa with the Bandeja Paisa. Someone who was not from Colombia probably wouldn't notice or care but I love arepas so that was disappointing. They made up on it with the authentic flavors in the beans and homemade chorizo. Would highly recommend if you love Colombian food.
google avatar

James E.

Yelp
Very sweet staff, great food, seemed to be family owned and operated. I didn't even get a chance to photograph the empanadas cause I inhaled them from the plate before they even hit the table as I was starving when I arrived lol but they are highly recommended. Charming decorations and ambiance as they are proud of their Columbian heritage! I was grateful to have experienced their food and will be back to try the rest of the menu.

Mariela M.

Yelp
I recommended this restaurant to some friends because we were looking for a Colombian restaurant to try traditional dishes and watch the Copa America soccer match between Argentina and Colombia; however, this place was overcrowded and the waiter was so rude. The manager didn't take in account the amount of people that arrived there( a lot of people) and placed only a server.

Olando D.

Yelp
Great Colombian food, bandeja paisa is the best, have been here 4 times and still haven't had a bad meal. The atmosphere is amazing, makes you think of Colombia However, the service is not the greatest, every time I've been there it gets worse. On our last visit, we waited for about 15 minutes to get the menus, I had to get up and grab them myself. Then, the server never came to take our order, I had to go to the register and asked them to please take our order, very disappointed.

Carolyn R.

Yelp
this restaurant was soooo good!! we had their guava milk and it was so delicious, i want another immediately :) it was creamy and had little bubbles at the top, and the milk was so smooth to drink. get their fruit milks!!! we got their almojabanas too and they were so pillowy soft and almost mochi-like. and we also tried their shrimp ceviche with plantain! it exceeded my expectations and had so much flavor and a generous amount of shrimp. i could eat here everyday.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
This was some tasty stuff! Cozy little place with a nice outside area along the street as well, worth checking out if you're looking for something new in the area. Gotta love those Arepas! Friendly service, too!

Yelp
I walked past this place during the day on a weekend and the patio dining was at max capacity (when indoor dining was not allowed)... The food looked amazing and I decided I would need to check them out soon. Once indoor dining was allowed, I came in on a Thursday evening and ordered a few things. Everything we ordered was really good... Authentic and different than anything I have tasted before. And inexpensive! I love getting good food at a good price... It makes me want to come back more.
google avatar

Yelp
Phenomenal food, everything we ordered was fantastic. Excellent service despite how rusty my Spanish is, will practice so I can come back

Simona N.

Yelp
I discovered this place like a month ago and have already been 3 times! One of those times I insisted my whole family needed to come, and they loved it too. Every time the food has been just as excellent, there's no issue of consistency. The environment is lively and the staff are all friendly. Good food, good service, and good prices. One of my new favorite places! I could live off of the yucca fritas.

Yelp
I love the food cart but it's always a fail ordering from the restaurant. The restaurant obviously has more options and they are good but I am 5/5 or cancelled orders from delivery companies. All of them with different excuses. We don't take those orders to the tablets are down. I then went to the location and didn't get any service for 10 minutes so I left. Im hoping things get better but man 6 times I've tried to give you my money and I get burned.

Jean L.

Yelp
very slow service. for about an hour to receive 2 plates of food. In ordered bandeja paisa and sobrebarriga en salsa And both plates were low quality and incomplete, the bandeja paisa didn't come with the traditional chicharrón and the sobrebarriga came with an overripe avocado. Completely disappointed with this experience. Hope they take this review seriously and improve for future clients.

Yelp
I have been craving Colombian food for a long time. Drove two hours to this restaurant and it was definitely worth the drive. We enjoyed everything we ordered. Highly recommend stopping by Que Bacano for your Colombian cravings. The restaurant was beautiful decorated. Looking forward to our next visit!

Yelp
Horrible service, horrible food We ordered three entrees and received half of one- arepas completely unseasoned, cardboard, over cooked sausage, " avocado salad" a plate of chopped tomato and onion , unseasoned for $9.99 Asked about my husband's food many times, server could not have cared less. The sausage appeared alone, despite the menu saying " with salad" when I inquired, she retired with more onion, and tomato, no dressing and slopped it off and left. It was a terrible experience.

Yelp
What an amazingly authentic place to grab lunch or dinner. People who work here are probably the nicest people we've been served by. Not going to drag this out, just freaking get here as soon as possible.

Mi primera vez en este restaurante la comida deliciosa y una buena atención al cliente lo recomiendo

Yelp
If you are looking for authentic South American food, this is one of those places in Portland City Proper. El Inka is the only other place that comes to mind. I stopped in for a quick snack after work, it's a very affordable place to eat, and it smells amazing the minute you walk in the door. I got empanadas and they have beef and chicken and I like both but I prefer the chicken that's just my preference I like chicken more than I like beef in general but the beef was actually really good. The service was excellent they're very attentive and polite. My Spanish is pocho, meaning "broken," but she didn't judge me at all. And the kitchen was fast from what I noticed, they had a good relationship between front and back. I definitely want to come back with my marido and friends and show them this delicious empanada place! Yum!

Lizzie C.

Yelp
I started with a fruit juice (lulo). Delightful. Now I know the juices are good. I ordered a Bandeja Paisa, which is a signature Colombian dish consisting of an assortment of Colombian food items, such as grilled steak, rice, red beans, chicharrón, avocado, sweet plantains, sausage, and even a fried egg. Every item was delicious. Now I know I can order anything off the menu. Last item was the Tres Leches for dessert. Holy guacamole that thing was yummy. The server was pleasant and the music was fun

Yelp
Delicious, authentic Colombian food made with love! The indoor and outdoor seating accommodations are nicely decorated and very welcoming! We highly recommend checking this place out.
google avatar

Yelp
Im Colombian, food was ok Sancocho de Gallina was bland, expensive empanadas $3.00 ea. Bandeja Paisa the beans were very salty. Overall wouldn't recommend it. Especially since the service was not that good. Had to wait about 15 min for a check and when I inquired was told to go up front where I waited another while. The Yucca was good and the jugos. The location looks nice and the decorations are cool.

Yelp
Arroz con pollo was fireeeee!! It was a big serving in my opinion so I saved leftovers for lunch the next day and it still hit. First time trying this place, definitely won't be the last.

Gabi C.

Yelp
The young lady serving us hardly spoke any English. After my husband ordered - orders of empanadas and 1 order of fried yuca - the lady brought out an arepa and set it at the edge of our table. My husband said "I didn't order this" and she stood there arguing with him that he did. She then picked it back up, rolled her eyes right in front of us, stormed off and threw the door open (going back inside because we were sitting outside). She then brought out the fried yuca and had to ask my husband what kind of empanadas he had ordered, and once again stormed off back inside. Once all of our food had been delivered, my husband still said thank you, and she just walked off without a word. Overall the food was mediocre, the margaritas we ordered were great (though I think it's hard to mess up a margarita) but the service was downright awful... so we definitely won't be back.

Yelp
This place is incredible!! My family and I came in today and everyone's meal was incredible! Delicious and flavorful. The service was excellent and the owner is so friendly and personable. This is a great place to have lunch or dinner in a welcoming environment with great food. You'll leave with a full stomach, no doubt!

Yelp
Disappointing; I was so excited to have Colombian food while I'm in town. Ordered takeout, showed up 25 mins later and waited a few for the order to be ready--almojábanas, yuca frita and beef empanadas. Got to my car, opened it up and the almojábanas weren't just rubber bricks but also cold--I mean recently thawed from the freezer cold; had been nowhere near a heat source. The yuca wasn't freshly fried (this was lunchtime, not off-peak hours) and had also gotten cold and tasted like it had been laying around. The beef empanada *was* good, tasty and warm. But overall, kind of a bummer ‍ the people there seemed really nice so I'm assuming this was just a bad day.

Sarah Y.

Yelp
Oi! Where to start. As a native Colombian I was excited to find a Colombian restaurant here in the states. But was quickly disappointed. Let's start with the service, it was awful. The woman hardly acknowledged my partner and I, avoided eye contact at all cost, and didn't bother to bring us water or utensils. I couldn't help but feel the cold shoulder was due to our sexuality as everyone else around us seemed to receive friendly and attentive service. Now, the food. After waiting 40 minutes, we received our food, it was cold and bland. (We watched several people who entered and ordered after us eat, pay and leave) The plate we received was bland and missing chorizo and arepa. The arepa from my appetizer was rubbery and blaaaaanddd. The only authentic thing they had were the empanadas and aji. 10/10 recommend the empanadas, be sure to take them to go!

Yelp
Great Saturday night dinner in their outside area. Covered and had a heater putting out good warmth. Friendly staff. We two split the Arroz con Pollo, maduros, and arepas with carnitas. Super yummy and we even had leftovers.
google avatar

Steven S.

Yelp
Better than any Colombian restaurant I've been to in SLC, NYC, LA, Bay Area, and Portland which are all places I've lived. My family and I are obsessed with trying Colombian restaurants (we're Colombian) at any destination we travel. This is the king. The food here is on the level of my abuela's (my grandmother). Go to Colombia to find better Colombian food.

Robert D.

Yelp
What a phenomenal restaurant! I have never written a Yelp review, but I was compelled to after dining there. The restaurant wonderfully and tastefully decorated creating a relaxing, inviting atmosphere. The music in the background is perfect and played at a volume that allows everyone to enjoy good conversation I had the empanadas with chicken and they were perfect. Another person in my party had the Arroz Atollado . I tried the rice and it had a smoky flavor I've never experienced before that I became instantly addicted to. Another person had the Picada Columbiana and she gave it a 10/10! The portions are huge and the price is ridiculously affordable. The owner is so kind and makes sure your food comes out right. Everyone in our party was extremely happy and that rarely happens.
google avatar

Haylee S.

Yelp
Que Bacano? More like Que delicioso. I love this place! I've been 3 times. I have to get it when I'm craving a hearty and hefty rice/meat combo. Their portions are great and the sweet little plantains are like a cherry on top. All the flavors of my go to meal (Arroz Atollado) make me happy and wanting to come back for more!!!

Yamili P.

Yelp
While I enjoyed the food from their cart on foster, this place had me and my sister beyond sick. We both had the chicken empanadas and were violently ill within a few hours. We have spent the rest of our nights vomiting. I don't know what changed but todays food was not it. Will not be back due to fear of feeling like this again.

Randdy S.

Yelp
REALY REALY REALY BAD SERVICE. Unfortunately, Google doesn't have minus 100% for review. Went to get some food, waited almost OVER 2 HOURS !!!for 2 plates that never arrived. They served all the people came in after us, but never even got to our table. We got juicio, but never gor straw and any silverwear. The front door got LOCKED at 7pm WHILE THEY HAVE CUSTOMERS INSIDE. REALY UNSAFE AND HAZARD AND ILLEGAL in case fire broke down. REALY BAD SERVICE AND UNSAFE. Never coming back again....

Sarah B.

Yelp
Went to Colombia and wanted to try it at home. Thank god I found this place!! Empanadas and ají are spot on!
