17 Superb Shakshukas in NYC | Eater NY

"The quick service-oriented cafe tucked away in the Bushwick nightlife venue House of Yes specializes in shakshuka on the go. The eggs in a spicy harissa tomato sauce can be packed into a fluffy regular or whole-wheat pita." - Paul Schrodt

I really liked the food here. The atmosphere is good too. The sandwich I got was tasty. I would go back. It's a bit expensive for what you get.

Google
The hummus plate with sautéed mushrooms was tasty, but it’s grossly overpriced at over $16 after tax, especially given the small portion size and minimal chickpeas. The menu is also misleading—it suggests the plate comes with both falafel and mushrooms, but it’s actually one or the other. Definitely not worth the price.

Amazing food and special drinks! Beautiful and cozy space with friendly staff. We enjoyed everything we ordered. Their portions are pretty good too! Their hibiscus lemon honey is the best non alcoholic drink I have had, and their lentils soup is great! They have a great bar as well. Highly recommended!

Google
Came in here after a spot me and my friend and I originally wanted to go to was packed....glad we did! Very cozy, welcoming atmosphere and delicious food! I was pleasantly surprised with the food. Everything was super flavorful. I really want to come back spon to try some more things on the menu.

Google
Such a cute vibe my friend and I went for a quick late night munchie just get the baklava and ask for extra honey for the full experience they were close to closing but the staff was so kind

Google
Great little place right next to the subway station; cute decor and cozy atmosphere; great food (we had little gem salad and Middle Eastern Plate), pita bread greasy and addictive, charred beets sensational!

Kshitij Vadake

Google
It’s quite a small place with a few tables but food is excellent with everything tasting fresh. Service was quick and atmosphere is neat and pleasant. The pita bread was nicely toasted, hummus and labne were flavorful with just the right amount of dressing. Would visit again!

I’ve been eating here since it was a “hole in the wall” (old location, 6+ years) Lately, every experience has been a painful one—Dine-in & take-out. From long wait times to increasing prices, I think I’ve finally hit my wall with the Queen. Today the price for a side fries has increased to $5 and the actual quantity of fries has decreased, so much that I’m writing a review about it. What’s bugging me is that they only increased the price of a “side” (from $4-$5) but if you look on the printed menu… an order of fries remains $7. They’ve up the price of a “side” so much, that it only makes sense to upgrade to an “order” and this feels… not good. It now makes sense as to why the bartender “threw in a free side of hummus” … to go along with my literally (15) pieces of fries… -__-

Yelp
I've been back here a few times since my review in June 2024. The service and the food has declined over time since then. This time I had the mushroom and onion hummus, which was a little watery and only came with one small piece of pita for a large bowl. I also got the fries, which are still actually pretty good. The reason for the steep downgrade aside from the dwindling food quality and the so-so drinks, is the service this time was just ATROCIOUS. Bushwick service has gotten kinda cruddy overall these days because so many places have this transplant hipster vibe where they just can't be bothered, but this guy acted annoyed and put out to even be there. It was not great last time, but this time was astonishingly bad. He took my order and as soon as my food came out, he disappeared behind a screen and didn't come back out unless someone came in the door (which was only a couple times). Never checked on me. Never asked if I wanted another drink (my mint julep was awful, so moot point I guess). I had to wait for him to emerge when a to go order came in for me to flag him down for the check. Probably the last time I come back here.

Yelp
Small hip corner restaurant in Bushwick. The food and service was excellent but the area was kind of sketchy. No AC on a warm afternoon day was a bummer but there was plenty of fresh and not so fresh air coming in from the large opened windows to cool diners. However be prepared to get a healthy dose of 2nd hand weed smoke. I took my wife there for lunch recently and she still hasn't forgiven me. I ordered the schnitzel platter and my wife ordered the schnitzel sandwich. My platter was decent and my platter came with an order of French fries. My wife said that her sandwich was on the dry side and not very tasty. We will most likely not be returning. There are too many other great restaurants out there to try.

Yelp
Restaurant was decorated and music was kinda loud so it was hard to hear someone across from me. They later dimmed the lights and had candles which was nice. Staff were nice and attentive. The hummus and falafel plate was good. I really liked the rice and veggies - the flavors paired well. Maybe too much hummus for the portion ratio? Decent price for what you're getting, maybe $40 including tax/tip(?) for two of these plates.

Yelp
I'm so glad I went to Queen while in the Bushwick area. This a cute and quaint middle eastern restaurant with great service and decor. We ordered a couple of classic margaritas - they were fresh and delicious. Ordered the hummus and falafel plate with extra pita. Wow so good and fresh. Great flavors. The pita was warm, soft and delicious. The hummus very smooth and lovely flavors. The falafels were perfectly crunchy and tasty. Also ordered the lentil soup and it was so delicious. One of the best I've ever had. We also ordered a side of fries - they took a bit long and staff were super kind about it. They ended up bringing some baklava on the house with the fries. Fries were good with a side of harissa mayo and the baklava was a perfect sweet ending. Would definitely come here again when in the city!

Yelp
Uber eats order- I'm not blaming the delivery man. I'm blaming the restaurant. In Israeli culture, a shawarma platter means it will be stuffed to death especially at the prices queen charges. Now my platter came with (no pita that's extra!) what a joke, but it did come with a heaping helping of white rice. Not Israeli nor middle eastern. Chicken at the minimum. Oh you want tahini? Extra. Two shawarma platters, one shawarma sandwich after Uber's uber discount $50. And I'm standing over white rice. ?

Yelp
Quick service at this Middle Eastern restaurant. I had the middle Eastern plate with falafel, hummus, rice, salad, and pickled cabbage. Plate was ready in a couple minutes. I think they just had to fry up the falafel which came out hot and crispy. The falafel was the highlight of the plate and was the best that I've had in recent memory. They have two gender neutral restrooms; the one I used was narrow. They had three wines, a few beers, and a handful of house cocktails. Casual atmosphere.

Yelp
Just dropped by this spot and here's the lowdown: First off, the Fresh Mint Lemonade was a miss--totally watered down and lacking that fresh zing. But the Veltins Pilsner? Nice and crisp, reminiscent of a Modelo. Perfect for a chill evening. Now, let's talk food. The Hummus here is hands down the BEST I've had in a long time! That savory green herbs swirl? Absolutely divine. This plate is served with 2 pita breads but the garbanzo bean spread in it was so delicious by itself, that I ditched the pita bread and ate it with my fork. The Queen Burger was decent, but it could've used a bit more aioli to up the juiciness. The patty was thick and tasty, though those "crispy onions" were a letdown--soggy and tough, like sad onion skin. The fries were a tad over-salted and seemed double fried, but they were thin and flavorful, just how I like them. The real star? The Chicken Shawarma Plate. Wow. This dish is a game-changer. The chicken was so well-seasoned and tender it practically melted in my mouth. Paired with an Israeli salad, jasmine rice and a drizzle of mouthwatering tahini sauce, this plate is a winner. You can't go wrong with this one--great portion size too. Service was stellar--attentive and accommodating. We walked in without reservations and were seated immediately. The ambiance? Laid-back, dimly lit, with a small dining area and bar. Plus, you'll see lots of interesting people walking in.

Yelp
The food was fine - I might need to try other items next time. I just had the chicken shawarma and I found it a bit overpriced. The cocktail was really good. This place is intimate and has limited seating but many people were ordering to go. The service is very quick.
google avatar

Jeanne M.

Yelp
The hummus plate was really good especially with falafel. It's alsoba small place, and seating is kind of tight, especially at the counter. Our server wasn't the friendliest either.
google avatar

Yelp
The restaurant Queen is a small middle eastern place that served delicious food. Nice attentive staff, especially since it was a smaller restaurant. We ordered the mezze sampler and chicken schwarma. Loved the sampler of falafel, babaganoush and hummus with their pita bread. The chicken schwarma was very filling and a lot of topping which was flavorful and delicious.

Yelp
The food here is so so good!! You can certainly taste the quality, and the freshness of the ingredients. The service was stellar, quick and very accommodating. I loved the Moroccan inspired decor. The vibe, was so authentic, and I loved the wall decor and lighting accents. The outdoor seating was also very awesome!! Great spot to enjoy the views of a super busy Saturday night.

Yelp
My partner and I stopped here before catching a show at Brooklyn Made, and we were both very impressed by the quality, quantity, and level of flavor of the food we got! We ended up splitting the chicken shawarma plate and a labne, and the pita that came on the side was soooo good that we had to order another one. The service was fast and friendly - and very comfortable seating inside (plenty of space between tables). Glad we now have another great food option in Bushwick - will be back again!

Yelp
Happened to be in the area and stopped by on a whim. This restaurant is tiny and can get busy. I will say I got lucky that I showed up without a reservation and was able to get the last table. Service is kind and quick. The restaurant is beautifully decorated. The food: wow everything was delicious! I happened to try the hot chocolate and it was good. It's different, has a mild kick and isn't as sweet but it's good. It's not to typical hot chocolate. Not pictured is the lemonade which was refreshing!
google avatar

Yelp
Got some food to go here! Falafel platter and fries. The food was quite good!! The falafel itself was great, herbscious, good crisp. Slightly mushy inside, but great. I was frustrated by the fact that there was only four small falafel in the platter though. Four small falafel balls, each half the size of a ping pong ball. TF! The salad accompaniment were yum though, and the fries I ordered were perfectly crisp and seasoned well. I'll come back to eat and scold them for the portions

Yelp
Good tasting Mediterranean food on Starr and Wycoff. Lots of options on the menu. Everyone in our group really loved their meals.

Yelp
Two friends and I came in for Saturday brunch. We did make a reservation beforehand, as it is small inside. Two of ha had the mediterranean brunch, which comes with two eggs, arabic salad, labne, hummus, and pita. This was a classic breakfast plate with a mediterranean twist was was super satisfying! Our other party member had the malawatch & eggs, a puff pastry topped with eggs, a side of arabic salad, and a side of tomato foam. The puff pastry was light and crisp and went well with poached eggs. We all enjoyed our meals. For cocktails we got the hibiscus margarita and the arnold palmer. Both were using housemadr teas, which had great flavor but were too sweet for our taste. Would definitely stop back in for brunch or order as takeout in the future!
google avatar

Yelp
Lovely restaurant, kind of small and intimate inside. We were able to walk in with no reservation. Our server was Roy who was very attentive and personable! The food was delicious. Not sure how long they've been open but would not hesitate to come back. Hummus was so good, we had to order a few extra pita. The chicken shawarma was also great-I do wish there was more chicken though as I felt like the other parts of the dish were over served.
google avatar

Brooke K.

Yelp
A friend suggested this restaurant to us so we tried it out. The space is cute and pretty small. Def a brooklyn vibe. I ordered the hummus and side of pickles. Together the dish was good. The hummus did need salt, but once that was added that elevated the taste. It was good hummus, but it could of had a little more flavor. I had to add more green sauce, olive oil and salt...was pretty bland when arrived. I also wish they warmed the pita that would have also made a difference. I was hoping for a home made pita. Tried my friends chicken schnitzel it was really dry and under seasoned. He liked it...I thought it was lacking flavor. The service was okay. It's small so it's easy to get the waitress attention. The waitress said she was new so she didn't know a lot of the items but maybe after a few weeks if I go back she may have some suggestions.

Yelp
Best falafel that I have had in ages! Perfect! And the service was good as the reasonable priced food!

Yelp
We decided to visit Queens on the weekend for lunch and were pleasantly surprised by the quaintness of our experience. We walked in without making a reservation and were seated immediately. During busier periods (e.g. dinner) I'd suggest making a reservation. When it came time to order I chose the schnitzel. The plate itself was larger than I expected which made me feel I got value with the choice. The staff here was attentive but service was slightly slow given how busy the restaurant was. I'd come here with a friend or date for a casual dining experience in Bushwick.

Gigi M.

Yelp
best food I have ever had and amazing drinks, will be back. Great place to bring friends
google avatar

Yelp
Queen can be called a hole in the wall, but if you walk by this restaurant on any Sunday you can see tables full of friends getting together for brunch. It's immediately off the L on Jefferson St, making it a super convenient location! I went to Queen for my birthday because it was pouring out and had great reviews. I was not in love with my dish - Israeli Spinach & Cheese Puff Pastry. Though I have to admit I visited Israel last summer and wasn't obsessed with the food, so it might just not be the cuisine for me. My boyfriend on the other hand ordered the Chicken Shawarma and looooooved it. When I tried his food, I loved it too. Would definitely go back and try some other dishes, particularly the shakshuka Wish I remembered the cocktail I ordered because it was super tasty too!
google avatar

Kristen R.

Yelp
Great ambiance and decor delicious food and decent portions. Met a friend here after work and shared the mezze platter and more and all of it was good. Slow service at points.
google avatar

Chloe R.

Yelp
This is strictly for the delivery reviews. I'm extremely disappointed with the food I received from Queen tonight. I always get the lamb kefta plate (have been for at least a year now) and tonight, my food was extremely rare/borderline raw. It has NEVER been so pink in all my times getting it. The inside was soft, mushy, and so pink that I can't eat it. I don't care that the food was cold by the time I got it--that I can understand. But for food to be severely undercooked when I know how this place has prepared it in the past? Unacceptable
google avatar

Yelp
I came in here last Friday for lunch and was seated right away. Additionally, I was served complementary mint tea and my whole meal right away. My chicken shawarma platter came out within 5 minutes of ordering. The chicken was very tender and flavorful. The rice and salad complemented the meal very well, especially the fresh cucumbers! Highly recommend for a quick lunch (or stay a while, the ambiance seems pretty inviting to relax as well)!

Yelp
Queen is my go to brunch/lunch/dinner spot in Bushwick! Great food, staff and ambiance. 10/10 every time

MaKenzie H.

Yelp
Adorable spot with delicious food. The mint iced tea was great, just a little sweet and perfectly minty. We got a lot of dishes, but the best were the chicken shawarma plate (huge and delicious) and the French toast. Service was quick, staff was helpful, and prices were reasonable
google avatar

Matt L.

Yelp
Was not the original destination in mind but since it was World Vegan Day, many of the other vegan restaurants were closed. While the wait was a bit on the longer side, the food did not disappoint. The falafel and babaganoush was stellar and the tahini dip was unforgettable. I think the low lighting with an open candle is something to consider but that's just personal preference; the restaurant has good eats.
google avatar

Chaunna H.

Yelp
I'm not gonna hold you... I think I'm gonna be back tomorrow. I ordered a falafel sandwich w/ hummus. The pita tasted very fresh, the falafel was really good. It was a good-sized sandwich. Of course, inflation is making everything more expensive than it probably needs to be but, I am not mad about my purchase at all.
google avatar

Aintyosideschick W.

Yelp
Their lentil soup is not vegetarian. I realized it was my folly for not asking but when i realized there were chicken bits in the soup, i asked the waiter if it has chicken in it... which he blatantly lied and said no. I am now reeling from a stomachache because of the soup. Its better to be honest about your mistake instead of being deceitful because someone who has been vegetarian for over 2 decades can get ill from eating meat.
google avatar

Yelp
WHEW CHILEEE!! I'm gonna be an auntie- and this is where we chose to have a Lil family lunch celebration. Such an amazing choice. I had the chicken shawarma plate. It had so many yummy flavors. I liked the little kick in each bite, plus the sweetness from the pickles. Lord have mercy. I love it here. My brother had the lamb burger and he devoured that thang! He said it's literally his favorite dish on the menu and he's here every week with his gf who's preggo. The drinks: they start you off with water and shots of mint tea- I LOVED THAT! I'm in love with mint tea as it is. And it was refreshing and delicious. I also had the Hibiscus Margarita. It was so refreshing and delicious. I will be back!

K J.

Yelp
Food was way too spicy, i couldn't even taste it because i was just in pain. Nice atmosphere and service. I would give it another try. Maybe next time, put the hot sauce on the side?

Christopher P.

Yelp
Really good food. Hummus plate is filling and the perfect blend of spicy and savory. Chicken is well seasoned and everything blends well.
google avatar

Je'Jae M.

Yelp
A mizrahi style Mediterranean eatery, that has all your middle eastern bites in a healthy and affordable fashion.
google avatar

Sera N.

Yelp
excellent falafel but couldn't say more. the portions are small with the lamb only coming with three small balls. the cucumber tomato whatever salad tasted like pico de gallo. service was good as it didnt take long and they left you alone most the time but also tended to what you needed. happy hour seems good.
google avatar

Bonnie F.

Yelp
Chicken Schnitzel & Fries - 5/10 The chicken schnitzel and fries were underwhelming. The chicken was quite bland and the fries were lacking in crisp. Grilled Halloumi - 6/10 The grilled halloumi was not bad, but it was a lot of cheese. Pistachio Baklava - 6/10 The pistachio baklava was just a tad bit too sweet for my taste and kind of sticky. This restaurant was slightly underwhelming, but the food photographs well.
google avatar

Daniela B.

Yelp
This location had been mentioned in the friends group chat a couple of times before I visited on a dinner date. It was decorated so cozy and inviting. They had happy hour specials going on including some hot and cold toddys. I was experiencing a cold at the time and the hot toddy seemed appropriate, for health purposes. It was so tasty and soothing, practically tea with a kick. The French fries were tasty, I had the lentil soup it was comforting and the hummus was ordered. The staff was friendly and we didn't feel rush while there. My friend really recommends the chicken shawarma, so that will be ordered for next time.
google avatar

Nataly N.

Yelp
Cool spot to grab a quick bite in this neighborhood! I always love a good falafel sandwich and this place more than delivered! The falafel was nice and flavorful, soft inside, and very crispy on the outside. The pita bread they used had a nice texture, too. A perfectly sized sandwich for the price. The baklava dessert was just okay, but their iced tea selection was delicious.
google avatar

A L.

Yelp
Good food , my favorite is chicken shawarma, and home made lemonade, never really was inside, but ate your food and ordered a delivery during covid and after
google avatar

Nathan T.

Yelp
Might have become my new favorite Mediterranean restaurant. The lamb was perfectly tender and seasoned well. The service was outstanding with very nice and attentive staff. I also loved the decor they used. All in all will be coming here regularly:)

S C.

Yelp
Spectacular food and fantastic service. The lentil soup is heavenly. The roasted beets were outstanding. Great hummus & the pita bread was impressive. Zatar fries always fun and the falafel quite good. Great mint Morrocan iced tea & lemonade. Portion sizes were enormous and we left with a huge doggie bag and very happy stomachs. Staff amazing & super accommodating.
google avatar

Estee A.

Yelp
I was able to get a table for 6 people at 8:30pm miraculously. Service was fantastic and the food came out relatively quickly. I ordered the chicken Schwarma pita and it was perfection. The flavor and textures was incredible and the tahini was sensational. Def get extra on the side, creamy and magical. Will return, a fabulous experience!

Yelp
For the Sunday Drag Shows at 1pm and 3pm, those are a 5/5! Our group saw three kweens just kill it in the span of an hour and a half and it was fantastic. I would highly recommend coming here for that alone. Also it's a steal, $20 for the show and a mimosa or aperol spritz? Sign me UP. Tips for the kweenz not included so remember to bring your dolla dolla bill$. As for the food and ambiance, I would give this place a 4/5. Brunch specials are $14 on average for their mediterranean plates. They have a contactless ordering system which is efficient for paying but can be messy when it comes to tying orders to tables. Overall, I'm not sure what this spot is like when there's no drag show going on... but c'mon, you really must sashay your way here for the drag show!
google avatar

Hector D.

Yelp
Food is good and the service was very quick. I am not usually a fan for Mediterranean restaurants but I would definitely come back to this please.
google avatar

Yelp
An absolute hidden gem!! Never been before my first visit, and I was blown away! My mouth is watering just thinking of eating here again soon 1. Food was AMAZING - everything I tried was better than the next! 2. Great ambiance in a cozy space, beautiful and attention-to-small-detail decor 3. I loved the presentation of the dishes! It lent itself to both the combination of flavors that comes from Middle-Eastern/Mediterranean cuisine, and also looks great Great service, we had a reservation (would recommend esp if going for brunch), and the menu is great for sharing so you can add a little hummus to your entree or just to try a bunch of different things with a group!
google avatar

Bonnie B.

Yelp
As a member of a picky Israeli American family this really hit the spot! We had an assortment of things from the menu and all were absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced. The atmosphere of the restaurant feels very Brooklyn but mom and pop-y. Our waitress was great and the food was severed VERY quickly! This is a local friend of mines favorite spot and I can see why!
google avatar

Maria C.

Yelp
Ambiance was nice and chill, cozy. Hummus was spectacular- highly recommend! The chicken sharma sandwich was well seasoned!
google avatar

Risa K.

Yelp
My boyfriend ordered the restaurant week special here and I'm posting a review after sampling all the food since it was so great! The special included chicken tagine with couscous, lentil soup with homemade pita chips, and a small piece of baklava. Everything was fantastic and delivered warm/hot. The lentil soup was so cozy and warming, especially with this cold snowy weather. The soup also came with homemade pita chips that were perfectly crispy and seasoned. The chicken tagine was huge and came with 2 large tender chicken thighs with the couscous on the side to add in as you please. The broth was great and seasoned very well. The small piece of baklava was also good. I'd definitely recommend the restaurant week special. It comes with a huge meal and if you have a MasterCard, you will be reimbursed $10 - so in the end you get all this food for $10.21!! I've also tried the falafel hummus bowl and mint lemonade with gin a few months back. The falafel hummus bowl came with pita bread as well, and for only $12 I had an entire meal that stuffed me. The mint lemonade is also unreal and if you drink, I'd recommend ordering it spiked with alcohol of your choice. I love Queen and think all of their food is such high quality and affordable. I'll be ordering again from here soon!
