Where to Eat Near Portland International Jetport (PWM)

"The empanadas and smoothies from this Central American cafe travel well, so stop into Quiero for a quick meal. In addition to savory classics, the empanadas menu includes sweet variations like pineapple with ham and cheese, or arequipe (dulce de leche) and cheese, plus vegetarian choices. You can also enjoy larger plates like burritos or specialty items like Colombian hot dogs." - Kate McCarty

Quiero Cafe - Review - Parkside - Portland, ME - The Infatuation

"It can’t be all lobster all the time, but good thing there are places like Quiero to break up the barrage of seafood. This Latin cafe serves baked sweet and savory empanadas, tamales, Cubanos, and Colombian hot dogs, just to name a few of the best things at this restaurant and bar. Their quick counter service means more time to check things off your Portland to-do list too, like heading across the street to the historic district and Western Promenade or the Portland Museum of Art. Also an option: just taking a seat in one of their indoor booths or on the front deck to relax and people watch for a few hours." - Alana Dao

Google
Quiero Cafe is a welcomed Latin inspired restaurant in the heart of Portland. Stopped in with my partner for lunch and ordered right away. It’s super cute on the inside, very clean, and easy to find a table after ordering for two. We got the two veg options for empanadas, tostones, yucca fries, and rice and beans. Everything was extremely flavorful and nicely presented. We had food to bring home as well, which was a bonus. I can’t wait to go back to Quiero Cafe and I highly recommend visiting if you live in Portland AND/OR are visiting. Thanks, Quiero Cafe!!

Google
I love their empanadas. So delicious. The staff are nice too. The vibe is tropical and cozy.

Google
Empanadas are amazing! I love the cozy and fun vibe of this place. The staff was super helpful. I got the limeade and it was so good: slushy but no sweet. Perfect for a hot day

Google
Quiero Cafe is a cute place for small plates. We walked to Quiero Cafe for a quick snack of pork and plantains empanadas and yuca fries and lime smoothies. I like that this place has ample seating. So this perfect for groups or young families. There is coffee at Quiero Cafe .

Google
Cool place with good food. My pina empanada was a unique and delicious taste( pineapple and cheese) The purple smoothie was great (blueberry, almond, oat )

Google
Delicious Empanadas very flavorful. Great customer service and good Mango Margaritas. Quaint & cute atmosphere. This will certainly be our go to for authentic empanadas:) Good portion at a reasonable price point.

Google
We ordered several empanada flavors and a couple limeades. Everything was so flavorful and delicious.

Amazing food!!!! We got some empanadas, both fried and normal. Everything was super tasteful!

Yelp
What a great unexpected surprise while visiting town. First of all, I love the name. Straight to the point, I want coffee. The inside is cute and cozy. The staff was super friendly and patient with all the menu questions. You order your food, they give you a number you get up to get your food. They have a good variety of South American food. We ordered the fried empanadas and a lomo saltado. The lomo saltado the meat was good and tender good flavor, I wouldn't necessarily consider it a lomo saltado but it was good. The empanadas were a good size. Had beef, chicken and the cheese with plantains. My favorite was the beef. Overall a good spot, I would for sure come back.

Yelp
Took my father in law for a treat earlier this year. I'm so glad to have found this place. I think we have a new favorite spot in Portland. We got 3 fried empanadas (cheese, veggies and cheese and chicken, 3 baked empanadas (chorizo, beef and rice and piña) & a chicken tamale with salsa verde. Everything was delicious and prices are reasonable. The Colombian coffee is solid too. P.S. the baked empanadas are stamped, y'all!

Yelp
Super cute little place! Loved the leaves painted on the walls. A little confusing quesadilla menu- but the staff easily set us straight. I was here for a snack so I just had a cheese quesadilla. Cooked perfectly, good cheese. I would visit here again but heads up- only on street parking and a lot of needles on the ground outside the establishment...

Yelp
Large burrito was very filling and well made, served with tortilla chips on the side. A number of interesting smoothies and juices. I tried the naranjo with mango, orange, apple, kale, carrot and apple cider and it was delicious. Will definitely be back and practice my Spanish!
google avatar

Yelp
Really nice Latin food, we got the lomo saltado and the patacone which was the bomb! The yuca frites were a little dry but the garlic aioli was great. The people were very friendly , will go back to try other entrees. Not sure if I want to try their empanadas though , Boludo in Minneapolis has spoiled us

Yelp
Cool little spot, friendly staff. Best empanada I've ever had. Wish I was hungry enough to try more.

Yelp
Wow. The food is so fresh and delicious! The coconut limeade was beyond refreshing after a long day at Maine Medical Center. The yuca fries. we're out of this world yummy! I was impressed with how clean and welcoming it is inside and the service was fast. The churros were the perfect sweet treat to end the meal! We will definitely be coming back to try more!

Yelp
Lots of items to choose from, and plenty of seating available. Big fan of the cheesy items!

Yelp
Stopped here for a quick bite on my walk around town and was pleasantly surprised by the meal. The prices were quite reasonable considering the portion size and amount of meat provided. Service was friendly, especially with the cashier explaining different menu options in depth to me. The decor was nice, giving a feeling of being in a more tropical area. I ordered the cold cafe con leche to drink which was a bit mild on the coffee flavor and had a little too much cream, otherwise was quite enjoyable (for only $3.50). The empanadas were really the star of the show though. The beef in the carne empanada was cooked quite tender and served with well seasoned rice. The puerco was probably one of my favorites with tender pork and plantains that were boldly sweet. The pina was also very good, with sweet and juicy pineapple that mixed well with the fattiness of the ham and cheese combination. All of these had a nice crisp dough as well. Overall, delicious food and reasonable places make this a place I'd happily stop by again when I'm in the area.

Yelp
Stopped here for a quick late lunch with my family. It has a casual cafe vibe with lots of seating. The dishes we really liked were: Sweet corn Arepa, Vegetable Empanada and Tamales. Pulled pork empanada and Tomate Empanada were average. Yuca fries were hit or miss. The first plate came in perfect, so much so that we placed another order; but this time the yuca was overcooked and too dry. Some items on the menu are a little overpriced, but it is what it is. The service was okay too and so was their Cafe con leche.

Yelp
I can't even think of one thing I've had here that wasn't perfection. That's huge. Everything I've ordered is full of flavor and so fresh. Staff are attentive, kind and pay attention to detail. Great cozy space as well in a perfect location. Highly recommend the empanadas (I've had all except shrimp, and all delicious!), the fried cheese w/ Pineapple Sauce (I literally close my eyes and smile when I eat this), the Cuban sandwich, arepas, tostones, and tamales. It's all perfect *chefs kiss* Order extra salsa - it's amazing not only with the empanadas but to take home to have with chips and leftovers. The limeades and smoothies are great as well. Watch for rotating desserts, some super unique deserts make their way through as well. This place radiates joy and I hope it's around for a long, long time. Something this good you hang on to and never let go! 100/10!

Yelp
Quietly Cafe is a favorite go to for our family! The food is always good and the smoothies are a nice change to the diet. The cafe is a cute, clean, and homie. The ambiance is really quite nice. The service is great too. The food is always tasty, warm, unique, and full of flavor. Love this place!

Yelp
Love these empanadas. I stop every time I'm in the area. Usually busy- order ahead. Shop is very clean, lots of seating. Friendly staff. Very authentic.

Yelp
Great little spot for a quick bite! Food was delicious and the decor inside was on par.

Yelp
This quiet and out of the way café is a hidden gem. We were walking in the area and came across this restaurant by accident. Maybe it's not so hidden because there seemed to be a steady stream of customers the entire time we were there. This was my first time in a Mexican/Spanish café, and it won't be the last. We ordered the puenco, carne, and pina empanadas, and the cold café con leche. The empanadas came out individually branded so you could tell which empanada you are eating. These came out hot and bursting with flavor. The café had a neighborhood feel and gave off a very welcoming vibe. Unlike most things in Portland, this café had very reasonable prices. If you're in the neighborhood, it is worth the time to stop in for a bite. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I didn't want to give them two stars. I really didn't. For the record, it's not all-around terrible and I believe it could be easily improved. I'll start with the most egregious error: there was a massive piece of paper in my meal. From what I did eat, the patacon left so much to be desired. The plantain was so overdone that I couldn't even chew it. Furthermore, although the carnitas was nice and tender, it lacked flavor and the overall dish was underwhelming and aesthetically unappealing. The rice and beans were also bland. I also tried the arequipe. The cheese was not melted on the inside which was a tragedy. The wait was long, the food was mediocre yet moderately priced, and the service is tepid but not rude. Unfortunately I won't be in a rush to come back.

Yelp
Excellent food! Not they close at 8:00pm. Margaritas are top notch!!! Place is really clean and the staff is very good!

Yelp
We were going out for dinner, so we just wanted a light lunch. An empanada each was a good choice. I got the chorizo empanada and my wife the frijol. I felt the dough was kinda dry and too flaky. The filling was spicy and hit the spot. The frijol was pretty good, but the inclusion of tomato in it felt odd. We both wished we'd gotten the sour cream or some other dip as the garlic aioli was thick and chunky, and resembled a salad dressing more than anything. It was weird. I suppose the pico was complimentary and it was fine. In retrospect, maybe even a real aioli wouldn't have been so good with empanadas, so that's kinda on us too I guess. Definitely potential in the rest of the menu, so we'll be back.
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
The bean frito empanada was amazing, great tostones. I also had a strawberry limeade that was perfect. Great vegetarian options and delicious sauces too.

Yelp
We arrived on Christmas eve just before 2p and the kitchen was closing down. We were on a mission to find tamales for our Latine family members to bring to the annual Christmas eve family party. Portland has fewer Latine people and restaurants than where we live (NYC area), and tamales are not as common on menus and take some work to make, so this was not an easy task. The staff at Quiero Café was incredibly friendly and understood our mission. We ordered chicken, pork, and veggie tamales and they were a big hit at the party. The chicken tamales with molé were were very good and crowdpleasers. The pork tamales with a spicy red sauce were my favorite and had a great kick. The veggie tamales were tasty, but not my favorite (I tend to prefer a spicy green chile and cheese tamal as my veggie favorite and this was different). Quiero Café's menu is like a Latin American greatest hits medley with familiar items from Colombia (where my in-laws are from), Argentina, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Peru, and beyond. Next time I'm in town, I'll get one of the smoothies that look amazing and sit down for an actual meal instead of takeout. Portland: you are lucky to have a place like Quiero Café, please support it!

Yelp
Always in the mood for a good empanada, look no further this is the spot. Quiero café which stands for "I want coffee" is never far from the truth. Alongside my delicious empanada was a delicious cup of cafe con leche. This place brought me back memories of being in Colombia. There is an array of empanadas to choose from along with multiple delicious coffees and smoothies. I settled for both the chorizo and Piña empanada. My order was to go and was ready in about 10min. To accompany my empanadas was a small side of pico de gallo. As I sat in my car and devoured my empanadas in 4.5 bites I was in heaven. Warm, crispy crust, and delicious filling. My coffee was a nice pairing and I was in sheer bliss. Come check them out, this place is spectacular!

Karin M.

Yelp
Always SO GOOD. Took my 3 year old son here and he was thrilled with the queso empanada. He and I split tostones and I had the Luna empanada this time on recommendation from the server. I had no Idea what tostones are, but it's basically. Flattened plaintain fried until shatteringly crisp. Served with pico, garlic aoli, cheese, and guacamole. This will be a staple in our future orders. Told my kid it was like chips and he was sold. Honestly never had bad food here. My husband gets the patacon on the regular. Just come. Pick something. Eat. Limeade is also amazing if you're avoiding alchohol. It's also just lovely inside. Music is a bit loud which makes it a perfect kid spot.

Yelp
Great Latin food, quick service and pleasant staff. Love the Portland location! Drinks are yummy - the mango daiquiri is a must try

Sophia M.

Yelp
The place was supper nice and everybody was super nice. The food was absolutely stunning, it tasted so good and it came out pretty quickly and was super fresh. The Cuban on bread was one of my favorites, along with the Piña empanadas.

Shelby G.

Yelp
Empanadas are amazing. Location is perfect. Staff is sweet and quick! Love the wallpaper that makes it feel like you're not in the city, and the outdoor option on nice days. The steak entree is to die for.

Yelp
Quiero brings all of their goodness to the Portland scene! I was first originally introduced to Quiero Cafe in Saco, where I originally fell in love with their aesthetic, service, and incredibly good, authentic food. When I had heard that they opened a new venue in the Portland area, I was eager to check it out, and I was excited that they were able to share their food with a wider audience. The Portland Quiero Cafe has the charm of its Saco venue with its wooden walls, modern lighting, and authentic food. A friend and I went to check it out together, and their menu is the same as their Saco facility with their homemade empanadas and other Latin American goods. They also serve a variety of alcoholic drinks. My friend and I each ordered some empanadas, with the chorizo being my favorite, and we each ordered some beers. The service is fast, and the flavor profiles are always incredibly good. They serve their empanadas with some fresh salsa, which adds another layer of complexity when combined with their empanadas. My friend, who has never been to the Saco or Portland venue, instantly fell in love as well. Definitely a place to check out!
google avatar

Gloria B.

Yelp
First time visitor today. We will absolutely be coming back. Unique flavor choices for their Empanadas. Everything was made to order, fresh. I had a ham, cheese and pineapple empanada as well as a pulled pork and plantain empanada. Both were delicious. I got a side of plantains with sour cream. My friend got the Lomo Salanos and that came with rice. We each also ordered a smoothie. Nice atmosphere inside. Indoor and outdoor seating. Convenient location. Very reasonable on the wallet. We did not leave hungry!
google avatar

Jules F.

Yelp
UPDATE: five stars. Because the food is consistently delicious and fresh, the staff is consistently friendly and helpful, and the beer is consistently high quality. NEVER LEAVE US, QUIERO

RuleZero W.

Yelp
Hidden gem in the west end!! Admission- I had The Cubano last night and went back tonight for the Patacon cubano. This might be the best sandwich I've ever eaten in my life. I love a bbq pulled pork sandwich which I always assumed was my favorite... I was wrong
google avatar

Allie S.

Yelp
I stopped here for a quick lunch before I had to rush to my first tour of the area. I ordered the Cuban sandwich. It wasn't your typical authentic Cuban sandwich you'll find in FL but I'm fine with that. What I disliked was that the pulled pork was doused in some sort of heavy sauce (BBQ?) and the sandwich was very messy to eat. I also wanted to try their empanadas but they would only allow me to order them in groups of 3 so I passed on that. Overall decent place but not somewhere I would go our of my way to visit if I was visiting the area.

Marie O.

Yelp
Definitely visit this place if you want an alternative to typical brunch spots. very warm and welcoming, great atmosphere.
google avatar

Yelp
I knew about the location in Saco but never went and wasn't sure if this was related...sure enough, it is! This has become one of my favorite places to go. I'm astounded and impressed by the offerings of latin food here in Portland... Their tamales are absolutely delicious...5$ a pop but they are gigantic. My favorite of their empanadas is the puerco...that with those platanos...wow!!! Their coffee is the best we have ever had here....perfectly smooth and not bitter in the least. A perfect cup. But I gotta say, their star of the show...those churros. You will never have had better in this little town of Portland. For 7$ per pair, it's pricey but oh, so, worth it.
google avatar

Tony D.

Yelp
Was recommended by another restaurant in town. It didn't disappoint. I had the Lomo Saltado. The meat was tender and seasoned just right. The rice was cooked to perfection. Really impressed by this dish!! I'm not a big empanada guy. I did try the chorizo and beef. They were good. Ok, saved the best for last. HOT SAUCE, that's what I'm all about!!! They're sauces were Awesome!! Get over there and check it out.

Yelp
Delicious and flavorful food at this establishment. My cousin, friend and I were looking for a place to have dinner while out for our day in Portland. Quiero Cafe gives lots of options on their menu. I honestly did not where to look on their menu and what to get because everything looked yummy and I wanted to try it all. I settled on the chicken lunch meal which was shredded chicken, sweet plantains, rice & beans, cheese, salsa, avocado & veggies. I also ordered an empanada and tostones. Ok so let's break it down a bit. Chicken lunch dish-So delicious guys, fresh and surprisingly light. Ate it all up with some hot sauce. Tostones-I really liked this dish especially when I put on all the toppings on BUT I actually thought they put the toppings on for us which I would have enjoyed more. Empanada-Looked amazing but I was too full to eat it and then I forgot to eat it! Darn it!

Gay T.

Yelp
Haven't been there in a while. But location is great and the food fills a welcomed niche for comfort food with an Hispanic touch.
google avatar

Cindy Y.

Yelp
Man, I wish I lived in Portland just so this could be my local go-to spot. I'd been missing decent empanadas and guanábana con leche batidos since leaving Costa Rica. This satisfied my cravings and then some. I got the 3 Empanadas Tipicas - pollo (chicken), carne (beef), and the vegetales con queso (veggies with cheese). They were the perfect ratio of dough to filling and cooked flawlessly. I tried them with the creamy garlic sauce and various hot sauces that complimented the empanadas perfectly. The guanábana "milkshake" with whole milk was a nice balance to the heat, and added the right level of sweetness to balance the spices. I will definitely be returning to try more of the menu, or perhaps just order the empanadas again since they hit the spot. I could see this being a good environment to work remotely - well maybe not good for the waistline LOL.
google avatar

Nicole L.

Yelp
Thank you so much Antonio for your superb service. The pharmacy at Maine Medical center has been yearning for a taste of flavor! Best food that anyone can get! Being a Central American girl, this brought back memories with my grandma! Especially Los platanos Fritos y Yucca! Muchas gracias! Xoxo
google avatar

Nav R.

Yelp
A solid find - I'm surprised it's not more popular! You don't often find places with so many choices for empanadas, even for vegetarians. I got the tomate, frijol, and veggie. The tomate was by far the best. I felt the frijol was quite dry and the veggie was not very filling. The churros are excellent and well worth the price. Lots of interesting drink choices as well. Unfortunately didn't get to try their sweet empanadas on this visit. Cool vibe and reasonable prices. Overall a unique spot in Portland.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. We enjoyed arepas, empanadas, quesadillas, smoothies, limeade and flan. It was all delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
The most awesome Latin restaurant in Portland. SoPo has my go-to Taco Trio. Quiero Cafe is a step up with equally amazing food. I can't wait to get my plantains and empanadas for lunch.

Marina M.

Yelp
I was able to order Vegan Burritos, an Potato Enpanada & a delicious Vegan smoothie drink ~ and they were warm & super delicious. I just don't car for the chips, because they too are yummy, but not healthy for the tummy. Although, the Vegan Burritos are the best & Definitely healthier than most Vegan burritos most other places make.
google avatar

Yelp
I visited on a rainy day recently and can't wait to return. Parking isn't the easiest so give yourself time to circle around. The place was BUSY with families eating so it was really loud. I had 3 empanadas which were ready pretty quickly. I love that they stamp each empanada with its name so you can identify them. The menu is vast and that's why I want to return with my husband. So much to choose from, you definitely need more than 1 person in your party so you can try a variety of the offerings.
google avatar

B T.

Yelp
This place is fabulous. Tried lots of empanadas, all delicious. I was pleasantly surprised by the ham and pineapple empanada, so good! Also, the pork and plantain was also delish. I will enjoy coming here to taste ALL of the menu (although it will take a few trips because there are so many items)! Parking isn't great here, but it's worth driving around the block a couple times for. My only suggestion for this business would be to print some additional copies of the menu, so that those who have trouble reading the print on the chalkboard can have an easier read. My eyesight is probably average, and I still found it a little bit overwhelming to read. Older people, or people who have forgotten their glasses might struggle. Other than that, fantastic! I'll be back soon!

Yelp
Excellent spot for a casual bite to eat. So convenient to the hospital nearby. Empanadas and burritos were delicious! I was happy to discover this somehwat obscure little spot in Portland.

Yelp
Que Rico! Quiero Cafe is the NEW Latin Street Food place in the old Trattoria Fanny spot in Bramhall Square and LEMMETELLYA, they are a welcome respite to that square. We ate the first three empanadas on the menu. All divine. Mi favorito was the PUERCO- it had sweet plantains in it and I'm salivating as I write this. Get the puerco empanada. Their chicken tamale was also great and wasn't too dry despite it being breast meat. Also delicious. We LEVELED UP our empanadas and tamales with some chipotle mayo and garlic mayo which is help-yourself, and we definitely DID help ourselves. There will be more of me in Quiero Cafe because YO QUIERO TODO. Best of Luck on your new spot, Quiero Cafe, keep up the great work and you will have my business por siempre :)
google avatar

Rachel D.

Yelp
We had such a great dinner at Quiero Cafe last week! The empenadas were delicious. I specifically loved the chorizo and (surprisingly) the ham and pineapple! We tried the beef, chorizo and ham / pineapple. We shared 4 for two of us, which was a good amount. We also tried the tamales (chicken) which were perfection. I put some of the spicy chipotle mayonaise on the tamales, mwah! So good. The staff was super friendly and helpful with the menu / suggestions etc. They have one margarita option and a few other drink options - not a huge extensive drink menu but it lets you focus on what's important here, the empanadas! I could definitely come back. Counter service so it's easy and quick to get your food and head out or hang, your preference. It a small spot, not super great for any groups larger than 4 (maybe you could do 6 if you get one of the few tables) but much easier for 1 or 2 people if they are busy. Love it & will be back!
google avatar

Matthew K.

Yelp
Here I am again to come back and RAVE about the Margaritas That I neglected to try before. so I asked for the Kind staffs opinion in the best Margarita . She Recomended the Passion fruit Margarita . I am sipping on it right now . They made me a real margarita with real fruit no weird mix loaded with sugar etc . It came with a lime in it so damn yummy . they use 1800 Tequila which is good stuff . i like how they used Silver 1800 . personally i find the other styles repasado to over power the flavor and are far better on their own as a shot . But yes This Margarita is damn good . Rock on with Garlic Naan Margarita socks on . Proper Margarita with the right fruit and Balance . Thank you so much . Blessings

Yelp
They're just starting out (in Portland) so I won't chirp about little missed details from my first order that wasn't quite up to snuff. I'm just glad to have another place to get some legit Latin food that's within minutes of my doorstep. Seems to be a little more Cuban and Central America-inspired menu then I've seen much of in the pretty dense section of this market in Portland to date.

Yelp
I have been trying to visit for a while. Parking isn't the easiest, but it's not ridiculous either! I really enjoyed the atmosphere, it's cozy, without being dark. The lighting is perfect; not too much, nor too little. It has a jungle vibe to it, due to the wallpaper and the green and wood. The GF empanadas were delicious (one beef, one chicken and one cheese/veggie). I didn't have much time, and it was quick and easy! I'll definitely be going back!
