Where to Eat Pierogi in Chicago | Eater Chicago

"At Qulinarnia in northwest suburban Mount Prospect, chef Agnieszka Janowska uses modern cooking techniques to update Polish classics. And so there are traditional cheese and potato pierogi here, but also lobster and spinach, served with a side of cherry tomatoes. Keep an eye on the menu for seasonal and holiday specials, like sauerkraut and porcini for Christmas and sweet blueberry in the summer. Frozen pierogi are also available for takeout." - Aimee Levitt

I've been wanting to try this place for a while and it did not disappoint. It was a little on the pricier side but reflected in the portions and quality. The Polish Platter was tasty with a lot of variety and serious skill. The kielbasa was perfectly cooked and so were the pierogi. The cabbage roll was extremely tasty and tender.

It’s the third time I ate at this place. I might not eat pierogi too often, but this is the right place to get it! Lobster and meat pierogi was delicious! Also service was excellent! Server was very nice, helpful , happy with positive energy ! Location is very convenient, plenty of parking. Only down size that is little outdated, but anyway I’ll be back there and recommend for everyone ! 🙂

It was our first time visiting! They had an interesting take on Polish food with a modern twist so I had to go try it myself! The atmosphere was wonderful, the interior looked very beautiful. The staff were very courteous and attentive. The food was exceptional, the onion gravy sauce that came with my grilled chicken was amazing and the mashed potatoes were so smooth and creamy. It was a large amount of food that I had to take leftovers home. My partner ordered the schnitzel and he enjoyed it very much with the mushroom gravy sauce that came with it, along with the sauerkraut and the veggies with cheese on top. We would definitely come back to try more items from the menu!

Google
We had ordered family meals from here during Covid, but weren’t very ‘experimental’ in what we tried. Went live so close and realized we’ve never been here. Went to the restaurant tonight with a group of six and everyone tried something new…the sampler is wonderful for this. Every single thing we ate was delicious, service was excellent, Martin was so knowledgeable about every bit of food we asked about and you could tell he was excited and proud of the establishment (as was Leo!). Will DEFINITELY be staying close to our neighborhood and eating here more often.

Stepping into this place was like being transported to a stylish, modern take on a Polish kitchen. Each bite took me back to the flavors I remember from my grandpa’s cooking. It was comforting, authentic, and somehow familiar, but with a fresh twist. They really nailed the balance of traditional and contemporary, keeping the essence of classic Polish dishes while adding something new and exciting. If you’re looking to experience Polish food with a bit of a modern flair, this spot is perfect.

Google
Lovely place with delicious food. Service was top notch friendly with a smile. We ordered shrimp pasta, potato pancakes, pierogis, and chicken noodle soup. The chocolate soufflé was amazing! Looking forward to dining here again. Thank you for a wonderful meal.

Google
Stopped in for dinner and was impressed with the freshness and quality of ingredients. We tried the Polish Sample Platter, the Chef’s Schnitzel, and the Cabbage Rolls. All of it was well prepared and came quickly. The kid’s meals (choice of protein, vegetable, and potato) were free tonight and still they served incredible portions. The cloth napkins and comfortable seating were a nice touch to the overall experience. Incredibly attentive and welcoming staff. I would recommend this to anyone seeking authentic, well prepared Polish fare.

Google
I am Polish myself and never been here. Wanted to try it out and the service was excellent. The nice gentleman greeted me in Polish and was very helpful. I thought the food would be like American made Polish style but it exactly tasted like regular Polish food. I highly recommend coming if you haven’t tried.

Yelp
A hidden Gem. surprisingly good for Polish food which is normally bland.Definitely would recommend and come back to this place and try some more dishes.

Yelp
Looking for a cozy spot on a cold Midwest night...I stumbled upon Qulinarnia. It is a quaint BYOB restaurant with a robust menu. I got their sample platter and loved every single item (pierogi ruski, kielbasa, sauerkraut, cabbage rolls). I got the grilled sausage to go The rainbow trout is listed as boneless but had bones so the host generously offered a dessert for the trouble. Will definitely be back for some comfort food, they have quick to-go options.

Yelp
I will go out of my way for this restaurant! After trying several Polish restaurants, I was convinced I just didn't like Polish food. After seeing this place on an episode on Check Please, I decided to give this cuisine one last try. I'm glad I did because this place has become my new favorite. The perogies were absolutely amazing! We were able to ask for the perogies to be fried for a small upcharge. It was so worth it! The Polish sampler is the way to go. Everything was bursting in flavor and absolutely delicious. You get to try a little bit of everything. This place even made sauerkraut taste delicious. Everything about this place was perfect!

Yelp
Service was informative polite and very helpful. Food tasted great. Mushroom soup was very tasty. Nothing on the polish plate that I didn't love. Beef goulash was good. Simple item to crave - but I would love to have some more of their bread. Everything - if not 90 percent - is homemade. The pierogi are made daily. I'd like to come back and try some more of them and definitely a fish dish.

Yelp
I went for lunch after sales meeting in the area. I ordered the Schnitzel, Kraut, mashed potatoes and mushroom sauce. The portion was very large and the flavors were amazing. I should have stopped eating after half but it was so good I cleaned the plate. To say it was awesome is an understatement. It was amazing. We will always visit when in the area

Thomas P.

Yelp
Small but very nice place if you want to try authentic Polish food. And there is always parking so this is a plus.

Susan G.

Yelp
Tried Qulinarnia with a friend for lunch. I had the chicken cutlet and she had the pork schnitzel. Our entrees were delicious. The portions are very generous. The desserts were amazing! I had the chocolate cake, which was served with fresh berries, and my friend had the cheesecake. We each ordered mushroom soup to go. My husband ate the soup within minutes of me coming home and said it was great. Overall, a very good lunch. The dining area is small (maybe seating for 30) but is nicely decorated. Lunch menu is limited, but offers good choices. Will definitely return for dinner.

Yelp
This is a small but very authentic polish restaurant, the potato pierogi superb, and perfect place for date night. The only criticism is that they dont serve alcohol, don't know if it BYOB cause I don't drink, but serving wine and beer would make the place more popular. This restaurant is a gem in a strip mall.

Yelp
The most delicious and fresh food from soup to potato pancakes to perogi and leave room for the plum dessert! We all ordered different things and shared. Outstanding service. Lovely ambiance yet very family friendly. Highly recommend. Marvin was outstanding.

Paul S.

Yelp
A small neighborhood restaurant with delicious Polish cuisine options. We are regulars and have had absolutely no disappointments with anything we have ordered. Our server, Marvin, is polite, friendly, knows the menu well, and is attentive without being intrusive. Before the main course there are three soups to chose from and a variety of appetizers that are wonderful; however, you may want to save room for the generous servings of the main course. Some of our favorites are the lobster pierogi, the chef's special schnitzel, the Polish platter, the goulash, and the pork tenderloin. The baked plums are a terrific dessert! We always have leftovers which are delicious, too!
google avatar

E. M. K.

Yelp
Loved the variety of options, the staff was attentive and helpful considering we were not especially familiar with menu items. Everything was delicious!

Mark K.

Yelp
Our daughter took us here and what a treat. A warm and wonderful welcoming. The food was nothing short of five star. Excellent experience and we will be going again very soon.

Elizabeth F.

Yelp
One of our favorite restaurants. Excellent home cooking and atmosphere. It feels like you're in someone's home, enjoying a home cooked meal. They also catered my daughter's wedding shower. Everyone was raving about the food!

Yelp
Omg changing the menu . What a huge disappointment - the new sauerkraut recipe is a disaster I have always love coming here with my mother and now it will be the last place I will consider. Couldn't even get a refill in my water til I was done with my meal ... not worth the price you pay anymore disappointing

Khamidulla D.

Yelp
Just mediocre really Walked in , zero customers, no host to greet ... Few minutes later got a table Ordered Pierogi meat and sauerkraut for an app and pork shank for entree Entree was served first, cold mash potatoes, sauerkraut needs more love Pierogi came right after, tasteless I asked for coffee to be refilled twice Dessert was baked plums ... few slices of plum, scoop of vanilla ice-cream so so Not coming back

Mellicent W.

Yelp
We did carry out only but we will be back for a full meal experience. The pierogies were the best we've ever had.

Chitown F.

Yelp
Amazing food and service! Spring salad, polish sampler, and baked plum were amazing! Our server was spectacular as the place is as well! He even ran us down to return our credit card!!! Can't recommend enough!

Yelp
Avant-garde restaurant in Mt Prospect? Well yes - see pic. I've been here before and they take extra effort in the presentation. Today I had the duck on the recommendation of our server. It was served in a bed of sauerkraut guarded by the Best potato dumplings I've had. The duck in whatever sauce it had was excellent but little rubbery thus the 4 stars. I've had the pork butt here before and have no complaints. That too look pretty.

Vera K.

Yelp
I ordered one of my favorite dishes of Pork shank (Golonka) described as oven roasted in beer. It was probably the worst Golonka I have ever had in my entire senior life. I would really suggest that the chef taste it before service and review Polish recipes for Gonlonka using beer, honey and mustard.

Yelp
I hate to do this, but coming from a polish family this was outrageous food. The perogies are not even fried, inside is dry weird potato mixture taste like powder potatoes. The golompki inside the meat was DRY, looks like a few days old, see the picture. Potato pancakes were gross, the taste was not there. They were fried properly, but doesn't taste good at all and we ordered an extra plate of them. Lucky my husband was hungry and just ate it anyway because we are paying..... the cabbage was good I will give them that. The other thing, bacon should be crispy and this was soggy bacon - gross. Literally the highlight of my meal here was the apple sauce, my Peroni beer and the sausage that came that's probably bought from Andy's deli or Deli 4 U. We sat outside because they had a baby shower inside which is fine. Our waiter from the beginning turned into like 3 different people? Not sure who our waiter or waitress is. Word to management: FRY your perogies or at least offer to fry them. No one, maybe the very few want soggy bacon pieces. Caramelize them. The potato pancakes were rather dry and the flavor was off not tasty not sure what you guys do to them. It's not easy with polish food as it takes sooo much time to make and I understand that and I also understand the COVID situation but no excuse.... and I support small businesses 100%, but this wasn't it.

Yelp
Surprisingly great. I love Polish food but this modern and different Polish food. A real gem which is becoming my favorite in Mount Prospect.
google avatar

Thanh T.

Yelp
Cozy place tucked away in this strip mall. Beef tartare was well-plated. Sampler was everything you could ask for from a Polish restaurant. High quality cuisine. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Taken aback by my latest experience. I tried placing a phone order in advance and the woman on the phone was really terse and seemed annoyed that I was calling. She put me on hold a few times and then told me they were too busy to take my order to for that day. They didn't offer to call back or suggest for me to call later. I understand being slammed but the rudeness really put me off. Highly disappointed. It seems like they are understaffed and the staff are clearly not happy about it. I wouldn't recommend this place at this point.

Yelp
This place is a gem in Mt. Prospect!! The place was very cute/modern/cozy at the same time! The service was great as well. We came on a Thursday night and had to wait about 10 minutes for a table to free up! Must be a popular place in the area! I absolutely loved how delicious each dish was! We ordered the cheese and potatoes pierogis and the Polish Plate (3 pierogis, potato pancake, stuffed cabbage, and grilled polish sausage). My favorite were definitely the pierogis and potato pancake! The dishes were generous so we had leftovers (not complaining!). I would definitely come to try the other dishes on the menu.

Yelp
Excellent Polish dining within a cozy location in Mount Prospect. The food was very fresh and made to order including the delicious desserts. I wanted to come to visit this location for a very long time and had a chance to with some friends. We enjoyed a great selection of the cuisine which you wouldn't typically find at a Polish buffet style restaurant. The presentation of the dishes were very thoughtful and artistic! I highly recommend to visit this location to enjoy an excellent delicious meal with an artistic flair! Overall the entire dining experience was excellent and I would give the best recommendation for someone who isn't familiar with Polish cuisine to give Quilinarnia a try!

Yelp
So happy to pick up take out after my dental appt. I was looking for comfort food and was happy that I could reheat meal at home and it was still soooo good

Yelp
What a pleasant surprise! Qulinarnia was a serendipitous find. My friend and I just missed last call at Santouka, so we looked for something nearby. I was feeling more adventurous, so Polish food fit the bill since I can't find that in Rochester, NY. Long story short, it was the best Polish food i've ever had. The two ladies who sat us and took our order were very pleasant. They were helpful in providing dish recommendations. They took pride in Polish cuisine and really enjoyed being ambassadors to the culture. We ordered a bunch of things including: pate spread served with bread & apple sauce; "sour" soup; potatoes and cheese pierogis; beef goulash and the classic breaded pork chop. They were ALL amazing. I think we ordered too much (or simply refused to have leftovers). By the time the main courses arrived, we were both 70% full. Nevertheless, everything was delicious. I didn't think I would like "sour soup" but it turned out to be quite refreshing with small pieces of kielbasa sausage and quail egg in it. The standout dish for me were the pierogis. They were the best pierogis i've ever had. They had a melt in your mouth buttery texture that contrasted nicely with the topped crispy bacon. The sautéed onions and sour cream also provided a good tang. Qulinarnia ended up being the best dining experience in Chicago that weekend, which says a lot since I also dined at NoMi and Au Cheval. Not only was the food fabulous, the hospitality of the staff was first class and I would return in a heartbeat.

Yelp
Update: Third time here and it's always delicious, consistent modern polish cooking. The staff is attentive without being annoying and the owner couldn't be more lovely. Only complaint? That it isn't closer to my house! August 2018: Everything about this place is lovely. It's a tiny little spot with modern decor and cuisine, but the food is serious home cooking with an updated vibe. The food was incredible. The pork tenderloin in mushroom sauce with dill mashed potatoes and veggies was one of the best meals I've ever had. My friend got the Polish platter and loved everything. I even brought home an order of pierogi because they looked so good. I would definitely go back.
google avatar

Chelsea B.

Yelp
I ate maybe half of my meal if that... it wasn't appetizing or worth the money. I'm really sad I spent $20 plus a tip on it. I have over half of it as left overs and I should have just left it there on the plate.... the potatoes were over cooked, the pirogies were undercooked, cold inside, and were different than what was wrote on the menu. Two were the minute items and one was spinach and lobster. My drink was empty my whole meal and I asked repetitively for a refill. All and all I won't be back and I don't recommend it to anyone Picture posted are my coworkers food.

Janice L.

Yelp
We went for Sunday lunch. Had the Polish Platter which gave us a sample of all the favorites: potato pancake, perogis, cabbage roll and smoked sausage and sauerkraut. Everything was delicious. Would highly recommend. It is a BYOB restaurant, they provided glasses and a corkscrew but no extra charge for this.

Melissa L.

Yelp
Amazing. The food is just incredible!!! Especially the lobster and spinach pierogies and the fig dessert. Can't wait to go back!!
google avatar

Anita M.

Yelp
I come here every so often because I pass through the area all the time. This little gem has easily become a favorite of mine. My obsessions are their soups and pierogis. I love their mushroom bisque and sour rye soup even more so. Previously I have also enjoyed the pork schnitzel and pork butt dishes. My least favorite is the stuffed cabbage as the flavor was a little lacking and tomato sauce was a bit too sweet for my liking. Overall I have enjoyed the majority of all the dishes I have tried! One thing to know: They have daily specials! It's usually a great deal of some sort like a free cup of soup with any entree or $10 polish classics. I recommend calling to see which specials are running. The service here has always been good. My only complaint is that it can be a bit pricey depending on what you order. Everything sounds so delicious but I don't necessarily want to spend over 15 -20 something on an entree for lunch time. Then again their specials still make it affordable to try a good variety of things on the menu. I hope these specials stick around!

Yelp
Strangest potato & cheese pierogis in our order last time. They were like a mix of potato flakes, black pepper, and burnt onions-- I thought the kids were just being picky, but after eating some of the leftovers, I don't remember cheese and potato pierogies looking like this or tasting like this. Chicken dish was ok.
google avatar

Dolores P.

Yelp
We want to go there. Their ads seem delicious. We love good pierogis and mushroom soup.
google avatar

Ynez L.

Yelp
Soooooooooooooooo freakn good !! Just feels like your eating grandmas cooking. Everything is fresh. Potato pancakes are amazing !!!! Literally love the amount of bacon and butter that's in this delicious food!

Yelp
Qulinaria is a delightful little charm located in a totally unassuming storefront in a nondescript strip mall. The husband and I came here on a Saturday night to (belatedly) celebrate our anniversary and enjoy a night of free babysitting by the grandparents. I knew from the Yelp reviews to make reservations and I'm glad we did - the place is pretty small and it was quite full. From the start, Qulinaria is different than other polish restaurants around the area, living up to its "modern polish" name. The decor was not heavy feeling, but rather very modern. The menu is comprehensive without being overwhelmingly long. We started with the kielbasa appetizer. It was huge! More than enough to be a main course. Delicious and we were happy to take some home for lunch the next day. For main courses, my husband got the lobster &spinach pierogi. Totally unexpected flavor combo - very tasty. I had the golabki (stuffed cabbage rolls) with the tomato sauce. Very tasty, though I thought they could have been a little more strongly seasoned. We also had the grilled vegetables and sauteed mushrooms as side dishes - both done very well. We had plenty of everything except for the mushrooms to take home for lunch the next day. Husband also ordered a dessert - I think it was a chocolate mousse. It was fine. My only real complaint was that they don't have a drink menu. They serve alcohol, but don't have a wine or beer list. Rather, the server will tell you what beers they have, or you can blindly order a type of wine. I prefer to know exactly what I'll drinking (and how much it's going to cost) before I order. I can definitely see us returning in the future!

Tamara C.

Yelp
I expected a return call that day; didn't get a voicemail until a few days later. To insinuate that I spilled the food in your reply on Yelp, that the delivery person that I in fact cash tipped, is WRONG and terrible customer service. Pictures do not lie. And, your voicemail stated otherwise, that you apologize for the delivery of poorly packaged and spilled food. For the record. -- I'll update this review if/when I receive a call back from the owner as promised. If you are ordering for delivery, you may want to think twice. Our first time but likely won't be back because the food was delivered (their own delivery person with $5.99 delivery charge plus some additional $1.50 convenience fee and my additional cash tip, not third party food delivery) half spilled in the bag and into the other food boxes. Wet sauces/foods should be packed in sealable tins, not flimsy foam carry out boxes that don't fully close. The pierogi was dry inside, as others have noted. My son liked the salmon from his kids meal but decided to cook his own fresh pasta on the stove to eat alongside the salmon after seeing the condition of the boxes.
google avatar

Frank M.

Yelp
I saw this restaurant on Check Please and based on good reviews, I was really excited to dine there. The service was adequate but I thought the food was mediocre. The goulash I ordered was pretty tasteless and the potato pancakes were drenched in oil making them inedible. My wife ordered the cabbage rolls and they too were not very tasty. I also thought it was pricy. Dinner for 4 with tip was $180. That was for 2 appetizers, 4 dinners, two beers and one dessert. I won't be returning.
google avatar

Patty K.

Yelp
The only star they are loosing is because that restaurant is lacking a front entrance vestibule , without the front vestibule the restaurant is loosing heat and is at times very cold, especially when customers are coming in and out. The vestibule and electric heater would solve this issue. Food was great and service was fantastic!
google avatar

Mikey D.

Yelp
This place is truly a treat! The food is excellent and the staff are incredibly friendly. I was also surprised by the large portions considering the quality of the food. The decor is also interesting and I felt at home. I can't imagine someone being disappointed.
google avatar

Jennifer V.

Yelp
We ordered the family pack for $45 and the lobster pierogies. So good and so much food for our family of 3. We got the pork roulade, goulash, chicken in sun dried tomato sauce, grilled veggies, sauerkraut and cabbage, the spring salad and broccoli salad. It was a great way to try lots from the menu and we have leftovers for days. We're happy to support this restaurant during the pandemic!

Yelp
So... I am not an expert on Polish food... I have had some incarnation of it at certain points... pirogi maybe. Don't recall going on a bender, so it was probably just okay. Not that I question the 'Modern Polish' description... but maybe I need to explore the menu like Indiana Jones. The food here was very good... makes me want to find validate this definitively modern and cute place. Despite being in a narrow storefront in the middle of a (newer) strip mall.. It's pretty adorbs. The decor and layout are nice, well-thought-out, and the service is very attentive. Our waitress was so sweet. :-) On a Pesceterian deal again... and the salmon did not disappoint. I swapped out the linguine and sauce for vegetables and they were very good... maybe a tad salty... and again not sure broccolini was a Polish staple =) but... will definitely have to try the sea bass next time. Go and check it out... you won't regret it.
google avatar

Ross C.

Yelp
We were there based on Yelp reviews and we dont regret it. The food is delicious, good quality, portion are generous, we dont eat much so for us was enough to eat there and took home for later. I have never tried polish food and was not disappointed! The place is comfortable, service was great, cant say enough about service. We tried goulash, fried cauliflower, the pork, and had the plums for dessert. OMG all plates were delicious and well presented. My husband thinks he may come back with customers for a business meal. Prices are fair for the quality. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Kate M.

Yelp
The most fantastic authentic Polish meal you can find! Everything is delicious - especially the pierogis, goulash, potato cakes and broccoli salad. You can honestly feel the love they put into each meal they create. Highly recommend!
google avatar

May W.

Yelp
Many meals are looking so delicious and artistic. Tastes are so gentle and mild. I definitely come again.
google avatar

Miho S.

Yelp
Great atmosphere! Staff are very friendly and nice. We went as a big party. The owner coordinated and suggested some plan. We picked traditional Polish plate (I am not sure it is in regular menu...) which is very tasty and delicious!! Portion is very big, too! We are very satisfied. Thank you so much! I highly recommend it!!
google avatar

Ela K.

Yelp
What a delight! It was my first time eating at a polish restaurant and the experience was great. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. The food was reasonably priced. We ordered two apps and two main meals. The portion was large and you will definitely have some food to take home. The only thing they don't have at the moment is a drink menu. It would be nice to enjoy a cocktail with the amazing food but other than that everything was great. We will definitely come back.
google avatar

Masha L.

Yelp
What a gem! So happy I stumbled on this place. The place is so cozy, warm & clean. The service is fantastic, so friendly but REAL, no fakeness here. The food is AMAZING! their horseradish soup & the beet soup - YUM! Had the filet mignon - phenomenal & the potato pieorigis - so fulfilling. The plum dessert - just get it and you'll see.
google avatar

Miriam B.

Yelp
What a gem of a Polish fine dining restaurant. Some of the best Polish food I have ever eaten. Even my pickiest friends from Poland love it here. I had the sour kielbasa( aka white borscht) soup. Swimming in dill and egg so satisfying as a starter. For the entree I chose to have the pork tenderloin in pecuniary mushroom sauce which is a Polish staple. It came with Yukon gold mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. I could tell that everything was made from scratch. For dessert I had the stewed plums in red wine with whipped cream so amazing. The menu is large and I don't see how anyone could leave here unhappy this is a hidden gem even if you aren't familiar with Polish food. Well worth the drive.

Yelp
This is what my wife sent last April and she never got a response. We threw out 400 dollars in food.
