"Located across the street from the stadium where the LA Galaxy play, R & R Soul Food in Carson is a strip mall gem open from breakfast to dinner daily. The thing to get here is the smothered chicken: plump legs and thighs with chicharron-crisp skin covered in a tidal wave of brown gravy. The sides hold their own, too, from buttered corn to vinegar-lashed collard greens to candied yams sweet enough to dissolve fillings. Takeout is popular here, but we love eating in the cozy, well-worn dining room, too—order some sweet tea and admire the painting of the Last Supper on the wall redone with Black history icons." - nikko duren, garrett snyder, brant cox

9/18/24 My wife surprised me with dinner tonight. She stopped in at R&R Soulfood and this is what soulfood should taste like. The epitome of soulfood. We had the Turkey wings, Oxtails and for sides yams, black-eyed peas, red beans and rice, greens, dressing, and corn bread. The Oxtail fell off the bone. It delicious! The Turkey wing was tender and flavorful. The red beans and rice had sausage and was off the hook! (I can't lie, my wife's green's are better, sorry.) The cornbread was okay. Next time when I go I'm going to try the Pork chops. Now I wasn't there but my wife says there was plenty of parking and access getting in and out was good. The staff was friendly and nice. I wholeheartedly recommend the food. If in the area you MUST stop in.

My experience at the restaurant was horrible. I ordered the oxtails yams Mac n dressing a lemonade because they was out of everything else. For dessert banana pudding. I’ll start by saying the oxtails were so fatty. They should have trimmed them. Mac cool dressing ok. Yams was waters down and nothing end the but sugar. I been banana pudding all my life from different ppl and this one had a in familiar taste not seasoning but taste i could put my finger on but it was definitely subpar. They had the nerve to serve me burnt mf corn bread. Smh. I paid about 40 for bs because I was wanting soul food. I will never eat at this establishment again. I would took pictures of the food but I decided to write this after I gave the food to the dog. But here is a pic of the cornbread. I was livid.

This is my first time here at R&R soul food. I order the smothered chicken which came with 3 sides. I chose Greens, Mac and cheese, and yams. Chicken fall off the bone. Mac and cheese(homemade) yams great. Food is like my grandma made it. Friendly staff. I will be back for more.💕

We looked for one of the higher rated soul food spots in the area and came across this place but the experience was overall disappointing. The waitress was friendly to some members of our party and condescending/rude to others asking questions and never refilled our drinks not even once. The food was cold and we asked to get it reheated and it still came out cold the second time. The greens were bitter and tasted as though they weren’t cleaned properly. The meatloaf was dry and lacking any proper seasoning. The yams were clearly straight out of the can and warmed. The cornbread muffins were good and the short ribs and oxtails would have been good if they weren’t cold. I cannot exaggerate how poor the entire experience was. Also I was under the impression this place was black owned, but the kitchen staff and cook were not which may account for the lack of “soul” in the food we had .

Not going to take up too much time. Atmosphere GREAT ONLY because of the Customers. It was ALL BAD! It's been at least a decade since I've been back to R&R Soul Food. Waitress was pleasant enough. However, execution of service lacked. My friend and I ordered the Turkey Chops meal. Which by the way is my favorite. My TC really didn't look like chops. Very small cuts, Mac & cheese was too salty 😬 red beans & rice were OK. Just a lil too sweet, chops were seasoned alright. Corn bread was SUPER DRY. Waitress messed up my friends order. No correction or accommodations. Friend sent back her chops.... Sorry don't have a pick. But trust me I say her size of chops looked worse than mines. Really was a bad scene and handling of customer service. I see why it's been a decade for me. I only gave R&R another chance, due to the same friend bragging how good her chops were last week. Now May 10th 2024, food and service were horrible. Of course it was handled maturely on my friends part. But the owners and service were very disappointing. You know they charged my friend for that nasty meal. Hence, why I can NEVER return to R&R Soul Food. Greens were too salty too 😔 I did say I was gonna keep it short!? 😆 Anyhoo! No more, leave now! And I'll NEVA come back to R&R. I'll stick with M&M Soul Food 🙏🏿

Before being seated I was rudely spoken to by Antionette. She was our waitress. She brought out two menus and two place settings and walked away. When she returned, I kindly informed her that there would be two other people dining with us. She became defensive and rude. After bringing two more menus and two more sets of utensils she began to be sarcastic and demeaning in tone, stating “Was that all”. I thanked her regardless. She brought out our food very promptly. Some of the food was not fresh to order besides a few items based on the taste and texture. I ordered the catfish, yams, cabbage, and succotash. The yams were pretty good. The succotash was a little too acidic for my taste but other people in our party enjoyed it. The catfish was okay and the cabbage seemed like it was either overcooked or from yesterday. Antoinette came to the table and asked if we would like a refill of water but then decided to only refill one cup of water. There were 4 four adults and one child. Either way, I paid for the dinner plate which was roughly $23. The establishment has a boarded-up door. Mediocre food for the price. The atmosphere is more like a mom-and-pop shop. Some mom-and-pop shops are good but this one could have put more emphasis in customer service. Overall this place could have fresher food, better servers, and better ambiance for the price.

R&R has great soul food. We have not had a thing there that we do not like. We have been several times, I just kept forgetting to leave a review. R&R is in a small strip mall and parking is easy. It is not as clean as I would like outside, but what can they do. The interior is very small, but there are a few places to sit if you want to eat there. We usually take it to go. They also have delivery. The service is nice and fast. Your food comes out right and hot. It is all so very good. We love their mac and cheese and cat fish. The fried chicken is amazing. All of it is tasty. They have ox tails which my husband loves. I don't care for any ox tails so I have never tried them. They have soda and really good desserts. You will love this place. The prices are super reasonable and everyone there is nice. Have a great time. Oh, and the BBQ ribs--just so great.

Yelp
Shout out to Daniel Ryan and Ellis Law; straightforward, honest, thorough and amazing results.

Yelp
for the most part I enjoy the food when I can get what I order it is necessary for you to check your order before you leave twice I have ordered food to go to get home and find out they gave me something different

Yelp
I've been coming here for around a decade. Yes, it's no longer BOB, but they've stayed true to the menu. I like that their food is NOT salty, so you can taste the true flavahs! We had relatives in from Canada and they wanted some "soul" food that can't be found where they hail from. Got them smothered chicken, turkey chops (my personal fave - aside from the chicken 'n dumplings, but that's only Thursday), and catfish whole. Sides were all very good: mashed potatoes, mac 'n cheese, string beans 'n potatoes, yams, corn, and trip order of collard greens. Needless to say, they LOVED all facets of the meal.

Yelp
5 stars for food but 2 on service/attention to detail. A family member brought me here for lunch. It was late morning and the place was quite busy. We almost had to wait for a table but then squeezed into some seats in between 2 groups. The ambiance wasn't much, pretty bare bones - the basic look that have you expecting the food to be delicious. Once seated, the Server came out with menus and ice waters. I ordered the oxtails with no sides and no gravy. I later added 2 eggs over easy. While we were waiting for our food, a table opened up and we began to move to that table. The Server told us that we couldn't have it as a couple had been waiting for that table. However, that couple had arrived before us and had placed to go orders. The gentleman had to correct the Server and then we were allowed to take the table. The food came out quickly. My order was was correct and my family's just had too many biscuits. The oxtails were well seasoned and delicious. I was definitely quite pleased. Later the bill arrived and was given to my family member. They quickly noted that we were charged for more meals than we had ordered. They pointed this out to the Server who took the ticket back to correct it and brought it back with a "my bad". When my family went to pay, they said that it still wasn't right and the cashier had to correct the bill again. Hopefully, the Server was just having a one-off bad day but otherwise my oxtails were good and I would order them again.

Yelp
One of the best Soul food spots I have tried. That smothered pork chop was so good. Incredibly tender. Don't think I have ever eaten a pork chop that tender before. The flavor was really good. It was a bit heavy. After a while, you might get sick of it. Still amazing though. Honestly not the biggest fan of the gravy. The fried chicken was great too. Crispy skin. Tender chicken. Good flavor. This place is just comforting. It's authentic. Don't ever go to Roscoe's. Roscoe's is entry level. You want to go to joints like this. I was visiting LA and ate at Dulan's. That's not bad either. I was talking to a local and he recommended R & R. Worth it.

Yelp
$57 for 2 dinner plates and my friend M wasn't satisfied with her oxtails plate! We ate at around 5:46pm today! She treated me! Although the food came quick I liked my fish order, I'll say the sides were ok, just no seasoning on my rice /red beans or mash, the greens were fair and the catfish is the only thing I'd come back here for! Other than that they did forget my muffins and ...the oxtail plate wasn't good she said! The ambiance is fair the customer service was great but yeah it's hard to not eat if you hungry and we wanted to complain about the oxtails ....maybe gotta call them! Other than that it's an ok soul food place!

Yelp
This soul food restaurant has been in the city of Carson for a number of years. I must say they were always good but lately they have gotten better. I usually go on Mondays for their neckbones. "neckbone Monday". If you go early between 12 and 2 pm the food is fresh. All the favorite sides, greens, MAC & cheese, and yams are all good. their fried fish and Lima beans on Fridays are great. cornbread muffins are good, and gumbo on weekends great. This is my go too when I want soul food. Service is always polite and efficient.

Rene W.

Yelp
Order two plates of oxtails. Food looks delicious once my husband and I started eating it was to salty. When my husband said it salty coming from someone that eat salt on his food unlike me no salt. Its salty. in the only food I could eat was the red beans and rice cornbread and yam. So all the rest will go in the trash what a disappointment and what happened to restaurant are not supposed to put salt in the food unless you ask. This salty food would kill a person who has high blood pressure like me. SMH

Supajok C.

Yelp
The food was delicious and well seasoned. Portions were post-Covid size. I did not see one staff member of "traditional-Soul Food Heritage", but that is no doubt in harmony with the rest of society. The place was clean. There was a slight bit of confusion on the phone call due a lack of translation from English to traditional Soul that only a "T-Soul" person would understand so no sense in elaborating.

Prudence W.

Yelp
Bought 60 order of chitlins and got the bottom of the pot broken pieces and onion pieces

Gigi W.

Yelp
Called to ask what time they close, the extremely RUDE female picked up the phone and said, "we're not taking any phone orders" and hung up on me. She did it 4 times. The 5th time I called back, she picked up ghe phone laughing and said the same thing again. I yelled at her to say I only want to know what time you close. Very UNPROFESSIONAL staff. Will not be patronizing this place ever again!!!

Sharion M.

Yelp
This place has never disappointed me in all the years that I've been coming here and tonight was no different the food was so very good I got the short ribs with gravy Mac and cheese and black eyed peas it was all very fresh and well seasoned everything was great I'm not a fan of sweet cornbread so I cooked to pieces of hot water cornbread and had some green onion IYKYK...I will definitely come back .....P.S. I took a picture of my food but I still haven't mastered taking a picture of the food before I eat . Hey I'm a work in progress

Travis W.

Yelp
Driving down Avalon Blvd in Carson, I thought I would show some support for Dune soul food on this rainy day, so I decided to give R&R another try. At first I wasn't even certain they were open as the door was broken and boarded over. So already I didn't feel too connected with the ambiance. I'm on the side of keep the customer standing in front of you happy instead of trying to deal with a phone order. I stood for far too long trying to place an order instead of getting direct service. Good thing another patron was there to help otherwise I think I would probably still be standing there waiting to place my order. I ordered two lunch specials. Chicken wings with a side of rice & beans and potato salad. I also ordered the oxtails with a side of yams and cabbage. Both come along with corn bread muffins. Sounds good right? Nope. Neither of my orders had any flavor. The wings were dry and tasteless. And the oxtail was wet and tasteless. Corn bread can be dry but no amount of honey I poured could resurrect these muffins. None of the sides were any good maybe with made a slight exception of the potato salad. I think this restaurant really needs to work on all aspects of running a restaurant: the ambiance, the service and the food. I honestly can't recommend R&R to anyone.

Pat P.

Yelp
Food is usually very good and portion sizes are also. I love their short ribs which are always tender and delicious!

Matthew J.

Yelp
My family loves the fried chicken, oxtail, and liver and onions. Everything is good every time we order takeout.

Vi T.

Yelp
First time having soul food and it was a good experience. We came late night, maybe an hour or two before it closed and the ambience was a little drabby, so we opted to take our food to go and eat in the car, lol. My partner and I got the fried chicken plate with various sides. Firstly, that fried chicken HITS - both white and dark meat. The flavor of the fried crust was good and surprisingly not overly salty. Of the many sides we tried, our favorite was the mac n cheese. It was creamy, dense, had that extra note of flavor most mac n cheeses don't have. I would honestly buy that on its own because it was THAT good. The plate comes with cornbread. I like that it was like a little muffin, but it was on the dry side, so I wasn't a fan. Another thing I wasn't a fan of was that the side of mashed potatoes barely had any gravy. I'm not sure if that's normal for soul food, but I enjoy my mashed potatoes heavily doused with gravy.

Yelp
Me and wife visitted after church and the ffod and service from Liliana and Antoinette was Awesome. I reall yenjoyed my shripms and my wife enjoyed her meal also. Thanks for the banana pudding

Yelp
I can't believe it's been more than ten years since I first reviewed this restaurant. A lot has changed. I have changed. But the wholesome goodness of the food served at R & R remains our true North. During the pandemic, when the future was uncertain and the fate of humanity hung by a thread, my indulgence of the food at R & R was one of the few beacons of hope in a sea of darkness. After spending the morning treating sick kids, eating lunch here was the highlight of my day. The people in the kitchen are different from ten years ago, and my new favorite dish is the oxtail. It's so tender that the well-cooked and seasoned meat simply dropped off the bone and readily melt in my mouth. Some of the sides have changed too--I don't see the sweet yam anymore, but the succotash remains a staple. Despite many take-out orders, they were able to get my food ready in a reasonable amount of time. I ordered it to-go, but when a table opened up, I sat down and devoured my lunch right on the spot while it's hot. I left them a tip for the dining in experience. The lunchtime rush seemed busier than I remembered, as I had to wait ten minutes before a table opened up. To beat the crowd, try getting there before noon or after 1 pm.

Denise G.

Yelp
I've been going there for years when it was M&Ms. You name it, I bought it. Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter would not be the same at my house if I cooked. That's why I don't. R&R does just as great a job as M&Ms had done. I get my ham at Honey Bake. R&R stays busy. That's a great way of knowing they must be doing a fantastic job. Keep up the good work!!!

Mario B.

Yelp
Awesome soul food with great service and employees. Easy to find location. Nice little mom and pop type dining.

Ebonie B.

Yelp
You can't go wrong with this service or this food! From the oxtails, short ribs, chitlins, or mostly anything else, they are amazing.

Kristofer G.

Yelp
Was positively surprised by the flavor and portion size! The sides were packed and the chicken was nice juicy and flavorful. Didn't finish plate in one sitting! Service was nice. If you're in the mood for home cooking, this place is worth the visit!

Kurt B.

Yelp
This was the first and last time I will ever go to this place, I will not call it a restaurant because it would do the name a disservice. I ordered oxtails that had no flavor and were not even all oxtails I think they added neck bones or something. The Mac and cheese was terrible the greens were not flavorful the cornbread was hard and cold and the black eyed peas were ok but nothing to brag about. Do not go here you will be disappointed! This is going in the trash outside!

Terrell W.

Yelp
Tried R&R for the first time in years and I must say I wasn't impressed. I came in around 11am and there was no wait. After looking over the menu I decided to go with an oxtail plate and a side of turkey wings and fried chicken wings. The oxtails were flavored well and had good flavor. The chicken was fried very well but didn't have much flavor but they weren't intact so it was a lot of bones and meat already fallen off the bone. I'm not a fan of adding seasoning to chicken after it's cooked but I found myself doing just that. The turkey wings were my least favorite item. The wings also were bland and the gravy is from a can and just not good. The mac and cheese was ok but I actually enjoyed the black eyed peas and greens. The service was great. I didn't catch the gentleman at the registers name but he was polite and brought everything out pretty quick. I took my food to go but if you want to eat inside they do have a small dining area with about 5 or 6 tables. I don't know if I would go back but I would still say that if you've never been and like soul food give it a try, food is subjective lol

Deanna M.

Yelp
Never go on a Sunday it's overprice and the food is terrible. I came out of there with a $50 bill was able to sample the food and it was disgusting. I wasted my money and I waited over an hour and they never answered the phone the next day to get my complaint, I kept getting put on hold

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
Check out R and R soul food for the best soul food in town. I purchased the turkey chops dinner and the red snapper dinner for mom. The turkey chops are fried perfectly not chewy like an old piece of gum, some food places fry the turkey chops for too long making the turkey chop hard to chew and indigestible. The sides are seasoned to perfection., the greens are delicious and the yams not to sugary, just the right amount of sweetness. The Mac and cheese is the bomb!!! The fish is cooked thoroughly and they give you large portions for your buck. This meal can easily last for three days, check this place out right off the 91- when you see the line you know you are at the right place.

Newton H.

Yelp
Best soul food I ever had. Fried chicken on point. Juicy and thin crispy skin with good flavor. Love it. Oxtails fire too. Tender and good flavor man. Sides were ok but the meat on point. I'd be back. Good ppl n service.

Aquilla S.

Yelp
Even though the line was out of the front door, It was moving fast. I ordered the smothered turkey chops and was not disappointed at all! They were delicious I can't wait to go back to try another dish.

David J.

Yelp
This morning, I went to this restaurant for breakfast before heading to a meeting at Dominguez. I ordered a simple breakfast, oatmeal, bacon, toast, and two scrambled eggs. I waited patiently for my food. I noticed several customers came in long after me and placed their orders and got their food while I was still waiting. I asked the waitress about my order, and her reply was that it was the way the cook operated and that I should come back on another day. What kind of answer is that? Now my wife and I visit this place often. This is the last time they will see me or my wallet. I expect to be treated the same as any other paying customer. Imagine this type of service at a business you are patronizing. What are your thoughts?

Regina L.

Yelp
The service is always really good. The owner is very polite and courteous. I must say the biscuits are mine and my family's favorite, reminds me of my grandDaddys and his were the BEST!!! Always tender, full, fluffy and you just can't stop eating them!!! Breakfast, lunch, or dinner has good food that will satisfy your food craving.

Andraya A.

Yelp
VERY DISSAPOINTED. it's been a while since I've been here and the reason why I took a break was because of bad service (food). So today I come in before I go to work to get a lunch. I stand at the counter. The Hispanic gentleman told me I was looking at the wrong menu when. I started to look at the lunch menu. He disappears, I stand there approximately 4 1/2 minutes while everybody else is being served in the dining area, and it was quite busy. Motorcyclist..... Finally, a young Hispanic lady comes and asked me what I want. placed my order (short ribs, greens & cabbage waited 10 to 15 minutes, grab my food. Get to work open it up the short ribs there's one and maybe a half very hard in texture, taste funny and wasn't at all what I expected. $23 for plate that you would think would be full was lacking and this is why I took a break. I will never give my money to this place again. What's good to others may not be good to amother. I might as well support M&M and their unprofessional receptionist. At least I know the short ribs are tender. come down on these prices if you aren't going to make I worth It.

Annika W.

Yelp
We came here after church and this place was PACKED. We were brought here by a friend and they said it's the best soul food in area. It's par. Mac and cheese was the best part about all of it. I felt like everything lacked seasoning.

Sandra P.

Yelp
ordered Oxtails, today my order looked like half was oxtails and half was neck bones, it was good, I like the fact that portions are enough to eat off for 2 days, but the price is a little expensive. I think

Monica V.

Yelp
0 stars if I could. My place of employment ordered the Mac and Cheese platter and it was disgusting. It literally had slices of Kraft cheese on top, semi melted! It was watered down and flavorless. Definitely disappointing.

Brenda H.

Yelp
I absolutely love their soul food whenever I'm in town. I make sure I go by there and get a plate to come home with. Love their fried pork chops! You have the best food in town and the prices are great. The service is great. The ambience is fantastic and the owner is off the chain.

Wendy B J.

Yelp
I had a taste for Chitterlings, and the last time I had them from here, they were good. When I arrived, I asked the clerk if they still had them. She replied yes, but not until noon. It was 9:45. I ordered Liver and Onions. I sat down to wait for my number to be called and when it was, I saw that my food was packed to-go. I said, "I meant this to be eaten here. The answer I got shocked me. We'll, you ordered at the counter and so it was prepared to-go. Needless to say, R&R will NEVER get my business again. Good customer service would be to take it back to the kitchen and serve on a plate to be eaten there. Had I known ordering at the counter meant to-go, I would have sat at one of the tables. It's too bad for them because once I got home, the food was good.

Ms. S.

Yelp
Food is always great but during lunch it's always best to call in your order. Since you can never get through on the phone, the owner needs to set up ordering online. I just called, again, and was on hold for 15 minutes. Now I need to find another old school restaurant to order from. There is one in Gardena. I wonder if it's worth the drive. Reviews are great for them so far.

Cynthia G.

Yelp
We looked for one of the higher rated soul food spots in the area and came across this place but the experience was overall disappointing. We had to get our own menu and seat ourselves. The waitress was friendly to some members of our party and condescending/rude to others asking questions and never refilled our drinks not even once. Tasha T.

Yelp
I didn't like the food it's was not prepared right at all , the chicken was fired in dirty grease which made the chicken taste burnt , the cornbread dressing whew I really don't know what that was taste nothing like dressing at all , greens very bland no taste kind of a sweet taste , Mac & cheese need a lot of work no seasoning at all . Kind of mad I didn't try before I got home because I would have requested a refund it was that bad . I will never go back the food was horrible . A waste of money I didn't eat food I tossed it . No stars for me at all .

Tyra O.

Yelp
Very good customer service food was fresh and hot. The pork chops was a little hard but season very well. The Black Eyed Peas rice was seasoned to perfection beyond beyond and there is exceptional. Thank you for a good dinner. Have a blessed day.

Nia L.

Yelp
Always my go to when I'm in Carson. It's a soulful homely spot, servers are nice and the food is good. I only come for breakfast to get the Catfish Breakfast. I like my Catfish crispy and sliced. Lots of parking and can get crowded by 10-11am

Lacie1 B.

Yelp
This spot was everything I remember small eateries I grew up dining in with my parents as a kid. Food and service were on point, everyone was friendly. Almost felt like home.

Yelp
R&R was one of my go to places to eat a good Sunday dinner. But now I don't think I will be back. I ordered the turkey chops for dinner and I was very disappointed in the food I received, I don't mind paying the price but when the quality of the food goes down and the price goes up that makes a customer unhappy .

Yelp
Disappointed with the customer service! Food not prepared well and didn't taste good. The customer service mostly turned me off.... Not quality soul food.

Yelp
I had to stay near Long Beach for an event this past weekend and had a taste for some soul food. My friend recommended R&R. I ordered takeout and the service was great. The menu made it hard to decide because there were so many options. I chose short ribs, yams, greens, and peach cobbler. The food was delicious! My next trip down that way will definitely include a stop at R&R!

Yelp
My family and friends came here after a long day. We wanted soul food from an unfamiliar area. Let's start with the drink. I ordered a lemonade. It tasted like Country Time powder mix and it was lukewarm. I would've been better off without a drink. I ordered the oxtail plate with a side of rice. The oxtails tasted like peanut oil made the gravy. It was thick and the rice was hard and overcooked. I othered the fried chicken plate and they brought me something other than what I ordered. When I told the server she informed me that the chicken in the back was frozen and needed time to thaw. Why does the business lack preparation? When I did get the chicken it greasy and also tasted like peanut oil. The macaroni tasted store bought and flavorless. The cornbread was so dry. It was hard and warm. How does cornbread taste old seconds out the oven? The cornbread tasted like cornmeal. When I bit into it I felt every grain in the cornmeal. The butter and honey couldn't save it. I am distraught and traumatized. I will never eat anything fried in peanut oil again. -0 stars if I could.
