I travel a lot also for restaurants. I do expect much more from a 2 star Michelin restaurant. Menu with 1 drink, wine pairing and water was more than 23000 Bath. The wine was served in such small amounts which was very disappointing and compared to the price it is expected that there are more (at least 7-10 ml is expected). The food was good but not at all as innovative as I expected - the petit four was served together with the dessert. They served tea with the dessert. No one asked whether we wanted coffee (that is maybe a cultural difference I am not aware of). All in all a disappointing experience compared to my expectations and the price. The staff was nice.

This dinner was soooooo disappointing that made me to write the review. According to R-HAAN, I can only reserve the so-called 4 hands 5 stars menu at the price USD450 per person, which is quite alike the top restaurants in NYC and Paris, so my expectation was they would offer similar standard experience. Service first, the waitresses were keep talking in our private room. A suited lady even get in directly from one door and walk through the entire room, entered the other door at the other end and she never appeared again, so it’s not a private room, it’s a corridor. Let’s take a look at the disappointing food. the first beluga, mixed with spicy Thai style chops, really covered all tastes of beluga, and they offered only metal spoon and fork for this one. Second course was lobster, the only one I like. Apple sauce was surprising. Third one, basically an oyster pancake, you can get much better one with Bangkok street stands. Fourth one, the truffle ravioli, it was the most subtle tasted truffle I’d ever had, chicken was good but mediocre overall. Next one, the foie gras itself was very well cooked but the skin made it rock-like is merely a stunt, tasted just like egg white. Main course was the most disappointing one. The puff pastry got damp, and the serving temperature was quite low at the table, even like put aside for 15min or so before served. Dessert, oh my, I know mousse and the coconut are authentic in France and Thai, but USD450 and Michelin 3 & 2 stars like this?? And the pastry Madeleine was totally damped and soft, they even didn't do reheat to cheat me.... This was a birthday party so I didn’t say anything to the restaurant staff during the dinner. But it’s really a mystery why they can got 2 Michelin stars. My perspective, they are a trap for foodies.

A very good, very formal fine dining Thai place that’s more appropriate for a special occasion than destination dining. R-Haaan seems like the place you take your mother to for a birthday rather than as an exploration of Thai cuisine. The multi course menu covers a lo of ground starting with a clever edible map of the country as an amuse bouche. Several starters are interesting but barely memorable in either presentation or flavor. Main courses are served traditionally around a plate of rice. The curries were delicious and the innovative Tom Yum was fun if not as dynamic as expected. Overall it’s nice but in no way justifies the steep5000 baht plus cost. Wine pairings add another 3500 and even the non alcoholic pairing was 1900. Service was robotic and scripted. Water rarely filled and we had to ask for drinks several times. Setting looks like 1984 never moved forward. I don’t know how they got 2 Michelin stars.

Rhaan: A Disappointing Michelin Star Rhaan, despite its Michelin star, falls woefully short of expectations. The food, touted as a celebration of Thai cuisine, was a profound disappointment. * Bland and Uninspiring: The lobster and crab dishes, the highlights of the menu, were shockingly bland. The flavors lacked depth and the presentation was underwhelming, failing to showcase the vibrant and nuanced nature of Thai cuisine. Not to mention the worst Tomyam in my life, I could only taste the salt flavor in the soup. Also, the desserts were unacceptable. The restaurant was so bold to serve a dry butter cake. * A Detriment to Thai Food: If this were my first encounter with Thai food, I would be utterly discouraged. The lack of authenticity and the overall underwhelming experience would likely leave me with a lasting negative impression of Thai cuisine. * Service Misses the Mark: The staff, while seemingly well-rehearsed in their scripted introductions, lacked genuine professionalism and attentiveness. Their attempts at photography were consistently unsuccessful, further detracting from the dining experience. * Lackluster Ambiance: The restaurant's atmosphere was far from the expected fine dining experience. The dark lighting and basic decor created an uninviting ambiance, lacking the sophistication one would associate with a Michelin-starred establishment. Overall: I don’t recommend Rhaan. The food, service, and ambiance all fell short of expectations, leaving a disappointing impression. I would strongly advise seeking out more authentic and enjoyable Thai dining experiences elsewhere.

Hey real cool spot. The soup is on point we did the tasting menu in January. Great cocktails, wonderful presentation. Recommend to anyone who wants a fine dining experience in Bangkok.

Bland food. Boring presentation. We had our anniversary here hoping 2 Michelin star would bring us joy but it’s totally opposite. We are Thais and Tom yum soup was definitely not for Thais, no spices just fancy heating tool. Salad was bad too, you could find better one from anyway, Yayoi (Japanese restaurant chain in Thailand) free salad tasted similar. I don’t know why they got 2 star. I doubt Michelin very much for this one. Drinks were so so. Avoid it.

However, and this is where my critique begins, it seemed that the restaurant's intention was to present Thai food and its rich tapestry of spices to a global audience, possibly aiming to showcase the authenticity of Thai cuisine in its most intense form. As a result, the predominant flavor profile across nearly all the dishes—excluding the desserts and drinks—was dominated by heat and spiciness. Every dish, from the starters to the mains, was imbued with a level of spice that, while delicious, became the central theme of the meal. For those seeking an introduction to authentic Thai food, this may be exactly what they’re looking for—a bold, fiery representation of our culinary traditions. However, in my humble opinion, this approach does not entirely encapsulate the authenticity of Thai cuisine as we know it. Thai cuisine, as any native would attest, is not just about heat; it’s about balance. Thai dishes are crafted with an intricate interplay of flavors, textures, and temperatures. For instance, a meal that includes a spicy dish is typically paired with something cooling, like a soup, to temper the heat and provide relief. If one dish is dry, it is often accompanied by something more fluid or moist. This harmonious balance is what makes Thai dining so special and reflective of our culture’s sophistication and pride. In this light, a meal that exclusively emphasizes spiciness, while expertly prepared, does not fully represent the essence of Thai cuisine. It lacks the balance that is so integral to the Thai way of eating, where no single flavor dominates but rather all elements coexist in harmony. This is not to say the meal wasn’t enjoyable—far from it—but it felt more like an interpretation of Thai cuisine through the lens of spiciness rather than a true reflection of the diverse and balanced nature of our food. As for the service, it was impeccable, living up to the restaurant’s reputation. The ambiance, however, was somewhat less remarkable. While the interior was comfortable and well-appointed, the view from the windows—looking out onto the building across the street—left something to be desired. A view that incorporated a garden or some greenery would have significantly enhanced the dining experience, making the time spent there feel more special. In conclusion, while this Michelin-starred restaurant certainly delivers on many fronts, it’s important to recognize that true authenticity in Thai cuisine is not just about showcasing spice but about achieving a delicate balance of flavors that together create a complete dining experience.

R.HAAN – Disappointing Experience for a Two-Michelin-Star Restaurant I had high expectations for R.HAAN, and while the food itself was undeniably impressive, the overall experience fell short of what I’d expect from a two-Michelin-star establishment. On the positive side, the cuisine was excellent. The flavors were bold, refined, and showcased the best of Thai culinary artistry. One of the standout dishes was the curry, easily one of the best I’ve ever had in Thailand – rich, fragrant, and perfectly balanced. The chefs clearly know their craft, and the food alone deserves praise. However, the service and atmosphere left much to be desired. For a restaurant at this level, I anticipated impeccable service and an atmosphere that enhanced the dining experience. Unfortunately, it fell short on both counts. During our dinner, a gentleman was performing on the violin, and while live music can add a sophisticated touch, the volume was so overwhelming it felt like being at a concert rather than enjoying a meal. It was nearly impossible to hold a conversation at our table, which significantly detracted from the experience. One of the dishes from the tasting menu was completely skipped. After waiting for a long time and realizing the error, we had to point it out to the staff. While they eventually served the dish and offered us complimentary drinks as an apology, such a mistake simply shouldn’t happen at a restaurant of this caliber. Another service issue was the inconsistent attention to detail. For most of the evening, the staff diligently refilled our water glasses, but toward the end of the meal, they seemed to forget about our table entirely. This lack of attentiveness is surprising and disappointing for a Michelin-starred restaurant. Summary: While the food at R.HAAN is undeniably excellent, the service and atmosphere failed to meet the high standards one expects from a two-Michelin-star restaurant. Mistakes like skipping a dish, excessive noise from live music, and lapses in service detracted from what should have been a seamless experience. Sadly, I left feeling that it wasn’t worth the journey.
