London’s Best Old Bakeries | Eater London

"Raab’s has been around since the 1940s, but its current Essex Road premises are slightly younger than that. The place majors on old-fashioned baked things, along with made-to-order sandwiches. This is packed lunch food, so go for something comforting, like the corned beef in a crusty roll, a packet of cheese and onion crisps and a fizzy drink. Maybe a steak bake too. Aside from Raab’s, the best thing around here is Asteys Row Rock Garden, a peaceful place to sit down and eat. After taking a load off underneath the shade of a willow tree, go for a leisurely stroll down The New River Walk to Canonbury." - Isaac Rangaswami

Took me several go's, as the opening times aren't always accurate and they are often completely sold out well before closing time. Nevertheless, I was pretty pleased when I got it right! It is the usual quality of a good, decent Jewish bakery. They don't overcharge, they are not fancy, but what I had was excellent value and tasted great. Love these places 🥰

Loved this place! The lady who helped me was very kind and attentive. They have such a wide selection of sweet and salty, both for great prices. I took home a bag of like 5 high-quality pastries for 5 pounds, which I feel is unheard of in London. Overall, would love to come back ⭐️ (P.S. The pastries with the smiley faces were so so sweet I got a smiley doughnut hole and it brightened my day ☺️)

A friend of mine has been recommending this place for years but until this morning I had never been in. Bread is made fresh on site, lots of sweeter options too. I went for a filled roll. It was huge, tasty and worth the £5

An excellent traditional bakery in Islington. Plenty of British classics and European-style baked delicacies too. Such as the Austrian Dachstein bread which is a sourdough, sunflower seeds and carrot bread. Of course Raabs also do the usual bakery snacks like pizza slices and jam doughnuts and they are much nicer than their chain store equivalents. Things do sell out quickly though so it's worth getting there early, and navigating the store can feel a bit overwhelming at your first visit. It's well worth it though.

Popped in there today & the staff are lovely! I got a selection of their goodies & they are so good!! Donut stick, hot cross buns and brownie! All for less than £5! One of the BEST bakeries I’ve been too. Definitely will be back again 😁

Traditional bakers used to give a decent meal for not much money, which is why there are so few left. Raabs appear to have survived by offering even less value than a meal deal from a hospital WHSmith, and with far less taste to boot. A great place to see sunken cost fallacy in glorious action

If you like cheap and dirty this is your place!! come at the wrong time nothing will be left but they will charge you full price no matter.

This place is an institution and really holds its own within London’s ever expanding bakery - great quality bakes and excellent prices.
