The Best Indian Restaurants Around San Jose and the South Bay | Eater SF

"Another small establishment, Radhe Chaat offers a large selection of snacks, along with many staple entrees from Western India. This vegetarian restaurant serves many classic eats from Gujarat including griddle-fried thepla; daal dhokli, daal with wheat noodles; as well as jowar bhakri, a rustic griddle-fried and gluten-free bread made from sorghum flour. plus Kutchi dabeli. If picking a dish or two proves difficult, the restaurant also offers several pre-fixe Thali options — large sampler-like platter with smaller servings of six to eight different dishes, served together as a meal." - Nandita Godbole

Google
Had high expectations from this place but this turned out to be a disappointment. Not against homely meals but this felt more like the quality you get in college canteens/mess. Tried out a lot of things and only a couple of times were edible, rest all was just below average. Not something I would like to try again in a place where there are endless options/ restaurants to try. Tried chole bhature: average, dahi vada: dry without curd- below average , makke ki roti with saag- roti was uncooked, vada pav was good and saag was tasteless, bhakari was good and lastly thali - looked and tasted like canteen thali. If you want below average non tasty food - go there . If you are someone who has to eat outside food daily and can’t eat any other cuisine - this place might work as it’s low on cost and kinda home cooked but if you are looking at restaurant style/tasty food- this place is a big NO

This place is soooo great! Definitely one of the better places I’ve gotten North Indian food (they’re specifically Gujarati). I got a thaali combo 1 for 12.99 (which for me is priced really well), and it was delicious. Everything was flavored well, balanced, and the roti stayed soft throughout my meal. They also give complementary chai which is a plus, it was also made fresh and spiced nicely. To top it off my server was prompt and friendly. I also got a chance to meet the owner who was warm, funny and kind. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for North Indian food! (PS I didn’t forgot to take pics of my chas & chai)

Simple homely Indian food. If you want to experience authentic Indian home cooking, this is your best bet, other than going to an Indian mom’s kitchen. We wanted to die in, but it was so full on a Saturday night that we opted to do Takeaway instead. The restaurant is very simple, and the seating is very basic. All the dishes were flavourful, and the best part was that they were extremely reasonably priced for good portion. I specially loved the bhindi. Also had the buttermilk with spice and it was really good.

Have been to this restaurant several times for lunch and snacks. Food is awesome, they could work with atmosphere with light music in background, other than that it is awesome place for food. Must tries: Methi Malai Panner, bhelpuri, veg cutlets.

I was craving thali one evening and decided to stop by Radhe Chat in San Jose since it was close by. Located on one end of El Camino, it doesn’t have a lot of parking, so be prepared to wait for a spot if it’s busy. I ordered the Gujarati thali with chaas but was a bit disappointed. The dish was bland, and they forgot to serve the chaas. The restaurant was very loud and crowded, and the service felt slow. They could probably benefit from quicker table turnovers. The menu is in English but doesn’t include pictures, which could make it challenging for non-Indian customers who might not be familiar with some of the dishes. However, they do offer free chai, and the chaat dishes looked amazing! I’m planning to give it another try and explore more of the menu since I think they have a lot of potential but are just falling a bit short right now.

Google
This used to be one of our go-to spots for good vegetarian Indian food, but unfortunately, the experience has gone downhill in recent months. The food quality and portion sizes have noticeably declined, and the variety in their menu—especially the thali—has become quite limited and less flavorful. It’s disappointing to see a place we once enjoyed lose its consistency. There are definitely better options in the area now.

Google
Used to be the best but after expansion, they are not able to manage the place. Food prices are hiked, I'm okay with that but now good quality has gone down to burnt food, missing food, delayed food, that's not acceptable. Gave it few tries before downgrading the review. Will miss it, hope they can recover to old times. Food 5 star Service is very basic but it doesn't matter if the food is amazing. The best home food outside India. Everything is very fresh and delicious. I highly recommend dhokla, any kind of paratha and thali combo. Dhokla - very authentic and comes with delicious chutneys Roti - Fresh thin fluffy chapati, perfection Paratha - thin good stuffing aloo pyaaz paratha, gobi paratha, plain paratha, yum yum I visit this restaurant every week and always loved the food. Only wish it opens a little early in the morning for a delicious breakfast.

Everything I ordered from this place has been really good, taste very well, like home made, and not oily. I tried Gujarati dal, thali, methi thepla, paneer tikka masala, khichdi. Very well prepared. Please continue to maintain great quality, thank you

Yelp
we like radhe chaat very much & going their frequntaly . food is very good . we like nature of their owner parulben & prakshbhai . best service ever is their motto. ***** dilip pandya.

Yelp
The food is great and the restaurant itself is very nice. However, the overall experience is affected by the behavior of some staff and DoorDash drivers. As a female customer, it's uncomfortable when male staff or delivery drivers stare, especially when coming alone or with other women. I sincerely request the owner to address this issue--please remind the staff to maintain a professional and respectful environment for all customers. Also, the group of DoorDash drivers (mostly Indian guys) gathering around the front entrance and parking area creates an unwelcoming atmosphere. It would make a big difference if this could be managed better to ensure a more comfortable and family-friendly environment.

Yelp
We were so excited for trying Radhe Chaat after a long time, but was left v disappointed. First, the price of this place has recently been updated and it is quite high given that the quality is minimal. The chaats/appetizer were good, however, the hakka noode's taste and quantity was very low. The rasmalai was still frozen, lacked taste, and was just too bad. I will sae me time and energy instead of trekking to this place in the future.

Yelp
Great undhiyu - lots of veggies and tasty! Cabbage chili was bland, and only received 12oz - expected better for $13. Karela was incredible - but again 12oz only. Order was easy to find and pickup.

Yelp
I have been here before Covid and found their food very good. I decided to try their chats. Their service is quick and the place has plenty of seating with complimentary masala chai. The dishes were tasty though I felt it could do with a slight spice. Overall it was a bit sweet for my taste but I liked it. The cutlets are really aloo tikkies and I wouldn't order again. But the rest I would definitely recommend.

Yelp
Radhe Chaat is one of the few places that still makes homemade style food in budget. I've tried their Methi Paneer Paratha and the taste, portion size is out of my expectations. They also renovated their restaurant recently and it's now a place with great ambiance to dine in
google avatar

Yelp
Very good Comforting food and awesome service people who works there are very attractive and friendly,Good Ambiance overall it's a good place we will be back

Yelp
Got to be the place to try out for Methi Roti, Paneer Parathas. They keep the consistency so good on their rotis. Lot of other items need to try, but highly recommend Methi Roti for sure. They are one of the few places who keep their restaurant clean and neat all the time. Not a very divey place, but we always grab to-go orders.

Dee S.

Yelp
Tasty food. We had ordered thaali. They can improve on Gujarati thaali. Instead of paneer , there should be some Gujarati sabki. Shreekhand also needs improvement. Otherwise good quality food, good customer service. Will visit again Thank you

Yelp
I used to frequent this place at their previous location before the fire accident and would always order the dal baati. It was my first time visiting at their new location and I eagerly looked for the dal baati but was told they don't serve it anymore. So we decided on the Bhel thali and a few orders of chana batura along with samosa chaat. Across the board the dishes were delicious. Not the best I ever had category but very decent. I personally got the Bhel thali, the Bhel was a tantalizing flavor mix and the seasonal pomegranates they put on top lent a nice tart kick. The thali also came with dal, two curries, two roties, rice and pappad. The dal was light and tasty. The curries were also not overpowered by excessive spices. I can definitely see myself coming back again.

Yelp
What a sweet little restaurant...a hidden gem in Sunnyvale. Had some lip smacking yummy chaat and parathas here. It felt like actually walking into a restaurant in Mumbai. Super authentic Very very clean and neat, plus the service is very friendly. Definitely try this place if you're craving for Indian food. They had a wide variety of options including chaats, Gujarati, Punjabi, combo thalis and authentic Maharashtrian dishes as well. Everything I tried tasted really good (Vada pav, sev puri, dahi paapdi chaat, methi paneer paratha, vada pav etc). I have also had their catered food when a couple of friends ordered chat trays from here and it was super good there too
google avatar

Anu S.

Yelp
They sat us down quickly, took our order, and the food came out in under ten minutes! Great service and better food. We got the mooli paratha, samosa chaat, and dahi paapdi chaat. All three were 5/5! Great food!!! Brought my mom here and she was so happy. Definitely will be back!
google avatar

Bindu A.

Yelp
We have recently been their regular customers. Softest rotis, amazing curries. Their Sabudhana Vada is the best!! Their chai is sooo good
google avatar

Sahridaya N.

Yelp
Great homestyle North Indian food & Chaat. Loved our Masala chaat & Thali. The Chai needs a special mention cause we went in on a cold evening and it was amazing from the first sip. Maybe complimentary (?) but they let us take another cup on our way out. Yay
google avatar

Rakshith A.

Yelp
Made me wait 45 minutes for two vadapavs and still did not have it ready. And took 10 minutes to cancel the order and refund. Use to be a regular here. Not visiting again
google avatar

Hasita M.

Yelp
Yaar! Don't miss Dhabeli and Undhiyu Puri here! Thank me later. Every chat item here has the right taste, right quantity and is good quality wise as well. Quick service. Nice place. I usually order takeouts.

Yelp
Still the safest food in terms of taste service and quality, closest to home made food, brought my folks from India and even they felt taste was authentic whether it's saag and maki roti, sabudana Khichdi, paneer paratha or puranpoli.. As always Ashu took great care of us, the food was ready in 5 mins within the order.

Kavya R.

Yelp
Unassuming place that focuses on food and delivers well on that. Had aloo paratha that ignited nostalgia. The sabudana vada was also appetizing. Hara bhara bhelpuri was also pretty good as you'd expect. Amazing service ! Underrated place.

RV V.

Yelp
I have been to Radhe Chaat a couple of times. Being a Jain, it really helps that they have a separate Jain menu. However, some of the items with potatoes are also mentioned Jain. Their Jain Methi Malai paneer, Jain Bhindi masala are really good. I hope they introduce more items like Jain vada pav (plaintains) and more curries in jain.

Kiran R.

Yelp
Food is authentic and tasty. Sabudana vada is crispy on outside and soft inside. Sevpuri has that Indian chat feel. Other dishes we tried Baingan bharta, Jowar rotla and plain roti are all tasty. Service is good. Ambiance wise they can make it more clean so down grading my review and lot of customers.

Nikita K.

Yelp
I like Radhe chaat for their simple authentic Indian food. All the dishes are not perfect, but there are some dishes, which are very good. We have ordered some dishes in the past like pav bhaji and saag paneer, which haven't been that great. When we visit here, we prefer getting the following items: Dahi batata Puri Sarson ka saag and makke di roti Methi malai paneer They have a nice collection of parathas. Their thalli's are very predictable and not fancy. So if you're looking for just a simple meal thalli's could be a good option. Having been here multiple times we have started to know many servers. They are super friendly and very welcoming. Again, this is not a fancy restaurant. It's more like a mess or Tiffin box eatery. Not fanciest ambience or super fancy plates. To summarize , I would describe this as a reasonably priced, sweet and homely restaurant with many dishes that are above average.
google avatar

Neha G.

Yelp
Went there based on a friend's recommendation. Tried their bhel Thali and plain parantha. Roti and parantha are nice but curry and dal could be better. Everything was low on spices (therefore low on taste as well) . Bhel was good. Bhel Thali and Parantha is sufficient for 2 people.

Yelp
So many fond memories with their old place that burnt down. I was so excited to see them reopen. Chat is so much more flavorful than their neighbor chat Bhavna.

Nirav

Yelp
Went on a weekday, service was quick. Ordered Gujarati thali which was ok - papad was half cooked and the kichidi was a bit cold. Undhiyu was good but the other veggie was bland / not Gujarati vegetable. No one came to present the bill so I ended going to the counter. They charged me higher than what the menu price was - I was told their prices have increased but the menu was old. Menu indicated $14.99 for the Thali, I was charged $17.99 for it.

Neela A.

Yelp
I'm curious why this place does not have a higher rating. Well my family absolutely loved the food. Felt like the quantity/quality and price point is just right. Perfect spot for little kids that can't take too much spice.
google avatar

Varnit D.

Yelp
made me wait 50 minutes for a simple doordash order which i didn't end up getting anyway and I had to cancel the order + did not seem very sanitary, just don't go here lots of better options nearby
google avatar

Divya S.

Yelp
Ambiance was below average. We ordered Veg cutlet, Pav bhaji and Aloo Paratha. Veg Cutlet was 7/10, Pav bhaji was 4/10, Aloo Paratha was 9/10. They have complimentary chai was a plus. Service was fast too!
google avatar

Yelp
Apppearenly you have to be East Indian to eat here. I have the video. I walked in to video the experience I had a few times here. I stood at the door waiting. People were seated... not me.... I waited so I started the video. An elderly man confronted me about my recording. He told me to pick a seat, all the tables were full. Here we go again.... The elderly man confeonted me again. This is obviously an INDIAN ONLY restaurant. If you are not Indian, I beg you to try this place! East Asians are obviously not allowed. If I showed up showing a badge they probably would treat me differently on the cask scale. Good luck!
google avatar

Sahitya M.

Yelp
Food - 5/5 Service - 4/5 Ambience - very casual, local tiffin shop vibes The food is really good ! I went there with minimal expectations and they did a great job with the menu! Lots of vegetarian, Jain, no garlic no onion options !! The place is under staffed from what I can tell Special mention - free chai !! And it tasted decent as well ! Good for a group setting. Dahi Batata sev puri is my favorite. Overall had a pleasant experience would come back again
google avatar

Apoorva R.

Yelp
The best tasting homely vegetarian Indian food in bay area. I loveeee their menu options. They have dishes which you wouldn't usually find at a typical Indian restaurant - sarso da saag, undhyu, shrikhand! Their food tastes very much like homemade food - less oil, not too salty or spicy! I always do guilt free take-outs from this place! The price range is pretty decent. Service is nice and quick! They have a Jain Menu available with plenty of options - most dishes can be easily made jain! The ambiance is nice and family friendly.

Semira A.

Yelp
food is so delicious, flavorful, and affordable. Full vegetarian menu! Spot is no frills in the best way

Yelp
A fierce craving for my motherland food, Gujarati (vegetarian), which I don't get nearly enough of these days. Went in with super high expectations, which I shoulda curbed given I can't eat spicy food anymore, and Gujarati food is generally not considered "spicy," not compared to South Indian stuff. Gujarati having more of a sweet end palate leaning. We got their thali's which OMG was overflowing with yummy things, e.g. kichdi and curry (not the Northern Indian kind), but more like the yogurt based, with two large puri's and channa with oondiyoo, which is a delicacy because of the layered ingredients, e.g. sweet potatoes and eggplant with broad beans and yellow lentils. They included a doula, the consistency the stuff of dreams, light and airy, spongy texture, and tangy with yogurt. We also got pani puri and dahi papdi chaat, the latter two chaats were solid as was the thali ... and my husband what a treat it was to see him enjoy everything so thoroughly. If you have colitis and are at all sensitive to spices, though on the scale of things, this was objectively not spicy, it was not edible for me. That said, this place is 100, for the authenticity of their preparation and ingredients, a bright. Sparkling colorful little gem, full of locals. The prices more than right. Located in a strip mall, so plenty of free parking.
google avatar

Diana D.

Yelp
I ordered takeout from here. This is a hole in a wall place with decent Indian food. I ordered a variety of curries (Paneer, Kofta, Bhindi, Karela) and some appetizer (Sabudana vada) and dessert (Puran Poli). Everything was fresh and tasted good. I loved the Puran Poli, hadn't had this dish in almost 2 decades and it definitely met the bar, close to what you get in India. Food was ready quickly and was packed well.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved their Dabeli again (5*) Also tried the following to-go: Aloo Onion paratha (4*) Veg Haka Noodles (1*)

Om

Yelp
Food was pretty good and the chaat was tasty. One thing to keep in mind is that it is a pretty small restaurant but service was good. The overall ambiance was good.

Mona V.

Yelp
Saddens me to give a business a bad review. Came for the first time in many years. Their parathas are really good. Their chats are terrible. The papdi chaat yogurt was very very sour, both my sister and I couldnt even eat it! We ordered 2. The waiter asked us if everything was ok and I told him it was sour. I didn't ask for a refund but it would've been nice if he offered a discount. We spent $16 on very sour chat that we each just took one bite out of. We ordered pani poori as well, it was meh. I left feeling very unsatisfied. But the parathas are very good so I will give this restaurant 2 stars.

Jinal B.

Yelp
Serves good food. Some great options are theplas, Dal dhokli, Shrikhand. Their thalis are delicious and reasonable. Also serves Jain and no onion, no garlic food.
google avatar

Mrqume M.

Yelp
Great place to eat pure vegetarian food. Loved the chat we ate here. Tea was excellent with special masala taste.

Yelp
Great taste. I ordered combo thali, perfect curries, hygienic and good quantity. Bhel was also different and amazing.
google avatar

Kurangi D.

Yelp
Food - it's about alright. Not great, Not bad. I have had manchurian , Malai kofta and undhiyu here. Of them, Undhiyu was the best. Service - it's really great service Ambiance - it's alright

Yelp
One of our go to places when we want delicious North Indian food! We've brought friends here and they've loved it too. Aashu is our favorite server and he's so friendly and welcoming.
google avatar

Sohil V.

Yelp
Everything about this restaurant is awesome. Been there couple of time and now it's more of a regular thing. Great food not too oily and greasy but still rich in flavor and tastes awesome . Service is top notch! They also have complimentary tea and the owner makes you feel like at home . Highly recommend over other places in El Camino Real
google avatar

Gagan M.

Yelp
We tried bhindi, bhaigan, gujarati undhiyu, cabbage chili , pakoras, rotis and mooli paratha. We loved the food

Yelp
So underrated restaurant but serves the best homely food. Their service is so amazing and caring. The ambience is just right for a restaurant of this size. Mainly healthy options

Yelp
Love this place! Food is tasty and bhel thali is awesome Service is good Ambiance is very casual , dhaba style
google avatar

Sankit G.

Yelp
Follow @theVeggieConsultant on Instagram for more such pics. We went after lunch hour, around 1:30ish and it was entirely empty. We ordered a whole lot of food - dhokla, paneer pakora, toor daal, rajma, Bhindi, baigan bharta, roti, rice. The food overall is very simple and home like. You won't find a lot of butter, ghee, oil or similar unhealthy products in large quantity. Though the food tasted well, they seemed to have added very less salt in everything. Also, we were almost done with the lunch and that's when they served Baigan Bharta. There are surely better places in nearby locality.
google avatar

Shradha A.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite Indian restaurant. I have been coming here since 2019, I absolutely love it. My most ordered dish here is Maki roti and Sarso Saag, Methi Malai Paneer. I absolutely love both of these, maybe Methi Malai paneer a bit more. I also like their samosa, bajra rotla. Also this is one of the few place where you can find home like tava roti. This time I ordered Methi Paneer paratha first time and absolutely loved it, it was so soft, crispy and heavily stuffed with paneer which is so hard to find.
