The Best Bars and Restaurants in Philly to Dine Solo | Eater Philly

"The ultimate BYOB for solo diners, this classic Italian restaurant has the perfect table for one while their signature meatballs, free-flowing pasta, and savory antipasti is being served. For first timers, start with their mussels and clams, bowtie pasta, and pair it with sausage and broccoli rabe," - Ernest Owens

Radicchio Cafe Review - Northern Liberties - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Radicchio is the kind of Italian BYOB that exists on pretty much every corner in the city. But instead of paint on the walls, it has rows of wine corks that will make you wonder how much they had to drink to acquire all of the raw materials. The menu is full of classic dishes like veal milanese and gnocchi al pomodoro, though nothing is particularly memorable. It's open seven days a week for both lunch and dinner, so if you're in the area, it's a convenient choice." - Alison B. Kessler

Google
Nice place with a great menu. The service is excellent and the food is really good, especially the salads!! Amazing! You can dress up or down as you want. It gets busy even during weekdays. Street parking is available but again, can be difficult as it gets busy.

Google
Absolutely perfect evening! Incredible food. Beautiful atmosphere. An unexpected find that turned out to be our favorite spot. This dinner was the best part of our trip to Philly.

Google
Delicious fresh food, made well. Friendly service. Consistent quality. Bread was tender with great olive oil. Staff were patient, helpful, knowledgeable. Grilled octopus was unreal. Sweet, tender, flavorful, and great portion size for an app. Nice pours of wine. Desserts were fresh and not too sweet.

Delicious food, very professional service. Highly recommended. Amir and Julian are the best! Thank you gentlemen.

Google
Amir and his staff are impeccable, every single time we visit. They remember us by name. Thoughtful presentation, specials and customer service. The food food and service is world class. Highly recommend Radicchio. Easy parking.

Google
The best kept secret for… decades. We almost don’t want to review and keep it a gated secret so it doesn’t get too “Instagram famous”. Food, service, atmosphere are best in class. Every single dish, yum! We bring clients here on the regular and they are always left completely amazed. Then, they return and invite us to go with them.

Google
Get the grilled artichokes!! They were the best thing we ate there. Overall, food was good! But the bread was terrible… not sure what happened there 😅 Our waiter was not as attentive as we would have liked, but he was very nice! And the busboy was amazing.

Google
Food was outstanding!! Still dreaming of the bow tie pasta with shrimp/ scallops in a pink sauce. The best ive had in so long. Love the outdoor seating too with the twinkling lights and the fact that it is BYOB!

Yelp
As we entered Radicchio Cafe we were greeted by the hostess who brought us to our table. While we were perusing the different options of endless enjoyment, we had the opportunity to see what others had ordered for their table. Let me tell you our mouths began to salivate just looking at the presentation from these dishes. While we were enjoying a several glasses of wine, let me just tell you what we enjoyed this fine evening. (At the moment it is still a "BYO") Appetizer. * Burrata ~ This was one of their specials , and this was amazing. Creamy, and delightful which made this salad the more enjoyable. * Grilled Octopus ~ This was perfectly marinated. Main. * Branzino ~ A special they were serving this evening, and this European seabass was made to perfection. This also came with a side of vegetables which complimented the main attraction. * Tagliatelle Diavolo ~ Another special they were serving with scallops, shrimp, and clams. This spicy dish was simply amazing. Dessert. * Tiramisu ~ What can one say.. simply exquisite. The service was on point with our waitress making sure we were fully accommodated, which is always a plus. In all with the decor , that home type feel that makes you feel like you are eating with family. This my yelp fam can make any meal you choose more enjoyable. With all of this coming at you, it makes you want to come back again, and again, and again. I know I will be back when they open up their new bar. I am Nando, and I approve this message.

Yelp
3.5 The good: grilled octopus, very fresh and tasty, a must-try. Fast service. No wait for tables. The rest: I was excited to try this place based on the reviews, but for the price, the ambiance, and the pasta, I was disappointed. No wait for a table on a Friday night. They started us off with bruschetta that was a bit onion-forward but overall good. But the cold sesame-topped bread that came with it was rock hard. The flavor was okay, but it was stale. Not a good sign. The pasta is all over $23, most closer to $30, with some entrees over $40. The place feels like it's trying to be fancier than it is. It's very casual inside (screams Italian with the cork walls and Italian words strewn about), and the tables are very close together. Some of our plates were a bit chipped. The pasta had very little bite, and the red sauce on my pomodoro was generous but a bit bland. My husband was especially disappointed with his chicken with broccoli penne--he said it felt like getting a basic stir fry for $29. Dinner ended with a free small biscotti for each of us. It was fine. Maybe I ordered the wrong things. Like I said, the grilled octopus was great. Very tender, well executed, nice balanced flavor. Maybe seafood is the way to go here, or the specials. But the pasta we got was such a let down, especially for the price. I would've given this place four stars if not for that.

Yelp
So first impression was a nice BYOB on a cute cobble stone street in old city. Plus we got seated so fast for a Friday night. They bring you out complimentary bruschetta on crostinis and a bread basket to start. It's always a green flag when you don't have to pay for a bread basket. We got 2 apps that were on special: roasted peppers with provolone and calamari. Then split 2 entrees: a pasta and chicken. We finished by splitting gelato. The portions were large and shareable. The food was delicious. The services was fast! The services was so fast but honestly too fast. We had 5 plates in less than an hour. Our entrees came out immediately after the appetizers. We asked for a couple minutes before ordering dessert but the waitress came back over twice asking if we were ready. Overall the food was A+ but it would be nice to enjoy the meal and not feel so rushed.

Yelp
I'm happy to update my review for Radicchio to reflect more like my original. This was my favorite neighborhood spot before they closed down (COVID). I was so excited when they reopened, but the food wasn't the same. I can now confidently say that they are back even better than the original. They have taken the original dishes and have worked hard to stay true to the consistency and quality they were known for with many of the same servers from back in the day. Also they have kept the cozy and intimate ambiance intact! Bravo Radicchio and welcome back!

Yelp
The food, service and ambiance of this restaurant were excellent! All went above and beyond expectations. Very authentic, delicious Italian food, with very attentive and friendly staff, working hard for their customers. Coming here for dinner was a wonderful way to end my visit to Philadelphia!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I came here for a date night the other day; we absolutely LOVED it! It's BYOB and the food is incredible. They don't take reservations but we got there around 6pm on a Friday night and had no issues getting a table. They have seating inside and outside so it makes it a lot easier! We started off with the mussels and clams appetizer in a garlic white wine sauce. Very tasty and loved dipping the bread in the garlicy sauce. Chefs kiss! For our mains we decided to split the spaghetti with chicken parm and ziti with meatballs. The tomato sauce was terrific and tasted just like your Italian grandmother would make for you on Sunday. The tomato sauce was a bit on the sweeter side which I loved as well. They chopped up the meatballs which was a nice addition and also added some ricotta cheese for a little something extra. The chicken parm was to die for and probably my favorite dish here! It was perfectly cooked and extremely delicious. We were too full for dessert but definetly want to try something next time! I can't wait to go back and try their other dishes. I would recommend anyone to go to Raddicho Cafe, you certainly will not be disappointed if your looking for a delicious Italian meal.

Yelp
Seated quickly, service was timely - that's the good. Burrata was firm and flavorless. Touted grilled octopus was average- couple slimy pieces. Fish was mushy and pasta with white wine sauce was average for entree. Dessert was decent and brings this up to two stars - pistachio cheesecake and tiramisu. As for ambiance, sound was a bit elevated for comfortable conversation, but otherwise fine. Sooo many great Italian restaurants in Philly. Won't be back!
google avatar

Doug A.

Yelp
Smaller place with a tidy menu. There is indoor and outdoor seating in good weather. I had homemade gnocchi with steak and it was great! Service was great, not rushed. I had no desert, but they seemed authentically Italian.
google avatar

Caitlyn C.

Yelp
Came with 4 girlfriends ‍‍ and forgetting to bring our own bottles (it's BYOB) didn't help... BUT, gosh we all polished our plates completely - have you seen 4 girls all completely clear their pasta plates, sauce and all?! Yummm... rosé sauce is the way to go (better than the white). And I'd say their seafood is better than their meat pastas although, you just can't go wrong really. One star off because I felt the interior and decor reminded me more of a 3-star, run of the mill place - needs a bit refreshing.
google avatar

Sam M.

Yelp
Had an early dinner with a friend who recommended this place and I'm glad we went because the food and service was very good my only issue is that some of the dishes were not filling so you might end up leaving hungry if you don't order enough to eat but that would end up being more expensive thrn it already is.
google avatar

Greg M.

Yelp
Did a double date here and had a great time. Food was awesome, staff was great. Gnocchi was top tier. BYOB places are always hard to beat. Definitely will return.
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
I have been going to Radicchio for many years, they are consistently great. Everything I have eaten there is fresh and well prepared

Joan B.

Yelp
Always amazing! Stellar service along with stellar food!! Food is always fresh, nicely presented and delicious! Love this place!
google avatar

Abigail G.

Yelp
This is such a cute lil Italian BYO gem! Food was delicious and they gave us free bruschetta and dessert. Waitstaff was great. My only complaint would be the location which isn't ideal, but honestly the food was well worth the hike. It's also a bit on the pricier end. We ordered the Caesar salad which didn't look like much but was amazing, the ziti telefono and the ziti Toto both of which were wildly delicious.

Nathan T.

Yelp
Ridiculous pricing for absolutely mediocre food. Tiny servings. Cramped seating. Don't waste your time!!!
google avatar

Michael F.

Yelp
This was a very nice dining experience. We were able to eat outside, and the atmosphere was very pleasant. The weight staff was excellent. The food was very good and I would definitely go back there. I thought it was priced very reasonably for the food in for the service that we received.
google avatar

Liz L.

Yelp
The service was great, we got seated and our orders got taken right away. But let's get into the food! The best pasta I've had in a long time. The food had so much flavor but it's nowhere near salty. The ambiance is very relaxing as the lights aren't super bright and the music is just at the right volume. This is truly one of philly's hidden gems. I would recommend you to come here.

James G.

Yelp
Wonderful Italian! Pasta was very fresh and good portions. Terrific service in a city where that's getting hard to come by. Love the byob too. Highly recommend any of their daily specials!!
google avatar

Jeremy G.

Yelp
Half of me doesn't want to write this review, because I don't want anyone else to know about this gem. I'm old school. I'm Italian. Radicchio meets me right were I'm at. The langoustines are among the better things I've ever eaten...the staff doesn't rush you through your afternoon bottle of Vernaccia...nor will they judge you if you need something to eat between your primo and secundi. Situated on a beautiful cobblestone street...Wood...which many natives have never heard of..you need this in your life. Rarely do I give out 5 stars and a ringing endorsement, but it is warranted in this instance. See you there.

Maddie H.

Yelp
amazing!!!!! love a good byob place and if you do i would out this on your list. gives italy vibes and great food .
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
This place is seriously the best Italian food in the city. Everything is amazing from the octopus appetizer to the pasta to the branzino! The Ghnocci is the best I've ever had and branzino was fileted and cooked AMAZING... no bones in any bite! Now don't get me started with the deserts... the lemon cake was to die for! I will be back weekly if I could! The only issue I had was I was way too full !! Highly recommend this amazing spot
google avatar

Andrea G.

Yelp
Such a great restaurant with excellent food. The staff is superb! Best Italian I've had in awhile. Will definitely return.
google avatar

Latoya G.

Yelp
What a cute little place! My sister threw a dinner here for her graduation last week and it was a wonderful experience. I love Old Philly with the cobblestone streets.. parking wasn't terrible, but I'm sure it can get kinda ugly looking for it at certain days and times. My first impression was just of warmth. It's intimate.. dimly lighted with nice glow from all of the Christmas lights hanging on the wall. I felt like I was in someone's home. Service was quick and pleasant. It's BYOB, so how can you beat that? The apps were okay... but my entree of Toto Ziti was BANGIN! Ziti in a pink vodka sauce with prosciutto and shallots.. my goodness it was some of the tastiest I've had. I don't live close by, but I would probably try to accommodate another trip for that plate alone. And prices are extremely reasonable.

Gilbert B.

Yelp
A real local Philly restaurant. BYOB! My wife enjoyed the grilled veal chop. I was not impressed by the chicken parm.
google avatar

Susanna C.

Yelp
Very cute restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. Windows open wide and even the indoor seating was integrated well with the outdoors. BYOB here is a nice plus, although we didn't come prepared. We arrived before the evening rush, so there was plenty of seating. By the time we left, the place was packed (no reservations). The food was very good, favorite was the grilled octopus appetizer. Nice seared flavor. The halibut special was a little dry. Pasta dishes were very good, although a little light on the seafood.
google avatar

Yelp
Has this place changed ownership? We live in CT and stumbled on Radicchio many years ago on a trip south. We loved it and have been back several times over the years whenever we had the opportunity. Great food, reasonable priced and a wonderful atmosphere. We stopped by this past week and it was not the same. Two of our dishes were on the salty side and mediocre at best. The bruschetta was passable but had nothing to do with the delicious experience of past visits. We also noticed the Radicchio Cafe sign was down though it was still on the menu. New owners? Not sure we will go back.

Hootergirl M.

Yelp
Excellent food! We had the radicchio salad which was delicious and fresh (even my picky husband loved the salad) and we had the chicken parm and gnocchi bolognese. OMG I did think the lunch entrees were pricey but that won't stop us from going back

David W.

Yelp
Incorrect hours as was trying to go for early dinner but closed. Called to make reservations and was told they closed at 3:00 to 5:00pm on a weekday.

A Rmen P.

Yelp
None better. This fish dishes are the best but everything is great. Service is excellent.. get there early or late to avoid waiting.

Marissa H.

Yelp
we were seated quickly on a Friday night, the service was good & the staff was very attentive. Love that it's a BYOB and they bring ice over for your wine.

Denise H.

Yelp
We felt rushed and entirely ignored on at an early Saturday night dinner. The restaurant was more interested in turning tables than making us welcomed. Servers were an assembly line group, and all different. One scolded us for using wine glasses for Pellegrino while advised the specials yet a separate server slapped down the bill before we even finished dessert. The bread was disappointing and is usually a bad sign of things to come. No surprise the pasta dishes were unimaginable and bland, not to mention pricey.

Samantha C.

Yelp
First time here, wow!!!! So good! Walked in, waiting for 15 min with my 3 sisters. We ordered the octopus appetizer, which was absolutely to die for! The burrata was was a special which was also delicious. For my meal I had the bow tie pasta and pink sauce with scallops and I would definitely order that again with a arugula salad it's BYOB which made it even better. The staff are kind and the ambience is relaxed I would definitely go again.
google avatar

Faith A.

Yelp
What a great little gem to have so close to home! A few weeks back when we first moved into our condo, we decided to make a trip over here on a busy Saturday night. We did have to wait about 30 minutes but it was nice out - and the food made the wait worth it. We had a number of things - different salads, pastas, and a few apps - and everything is good. So good in fact that I am now obsessed with the pappardelle with ragu when they have it. I was fortunate now to have had this amazing delish dish twice. And I hope to have it again. It's perfect for this fall weather! The salads are decent sized - easily shareable for two people. I love simple salads though and I can easily eat the insalata tre primizie. The gnocchi with meatballs was quite too. Honestly, based on what I have had and what I have seen, I suspect there is a lot more on the menu that I would love. Oh - and they sometimes have tiramisu - and it's wonderful. The fact that it's BYOB is another bonus. Service is solid - even though they don't have a ton of people working. My water glass was never empty. It can get busy - in fact, we were just there on Monday and it filled up quickly. We got there at 6:15, at about 6:30 it was full. So depending on your party size, you probably want to plan accordingly.

Jenna H.

Yelp
This is the best Italian food in the neighborhood. The setting is also so charming and the staff is friendly and welcoming. A hidden gem!
google avatar

Gregory C.

Yelp
Ok. So this spot is the real deal. I have been here at least 30 times. Half of the customers are speaking Italian. They are BYOB. I came here once and a man from Italy shared his homemade wine with me. The pasta is always done to a perfect al dente. You won't be getting over the top rich flavors here. It is pure, traditional, and delicious. Highly recommend anything with the pink sauce or chicken sorretina (their take on parm). The meatballs are savory. They also serve a mean branzino which is cooked whole and deboned by the staff. For vegetarians I recommend the burrata (typically on special), spaghetti or gnocchi al pomodoro, or fusilli toto (hold the prosciutto). You can't go wrong with this place.

Yelp
Finally writing a review after my 4th visit to Radicchio Cafe. I absolutely love this place, and is my number 1 Italian BYOB in the city. Great spot for a double date, although beware they do not take reservations. So, get there early or enjoy a nice walk around old city as you wait. They have great outdoor seating in the summer, and the staff is extremely accommodating to various party sizes. Also, they accept credit cards! They have numerous long-time customers who are very friendly. One even shared their own personal olive oil with my friends and I! Very fun environment! Staff is beyond friendly and extremely professional. Do yourself a favor and take the time to listen to the daily specials, as I've ended up ordering one 3/4 times there. Appetizers: The buratta and grilled octopus are an absolute must to enjoy with the complimentary bruschetta and bread. If they have the grilled octopus/calamari special I suggest grabbing an order for the table. Entrees: My first time I had the gnocchi with meatballs, which was very filling and delicious. Second time I had the squid ink pasta special, which was a fun and yummy dish. Third time I ventured towards the veal saltimbocca, which is an excellent meat option! My most recent visit I decided to go with the lobster ravioli with scallops and shrimp (off menu special). My only complaint was that I didn't order plate to go, it was that good! Finally, I've heard nothing but great rumors about the branzino, which I will certainly be trying next time.

Angela L.

Yelp
The food is excellent as was the Service. However. The Table for 3. was awkward. They positioned a Table lower than one for two with one Lower for two. With their Pricing Tablecloths would be nice.

Andrew G.

Yelp
One of the best Italian BYOB's in the City. The food was great and the service was even better. We'll be back!
google avatar

Courtney S.

Yelp
I'm in complete shock that I've never written a review for this gem of an italian eatery in our old neighborhood. We consistently bring our family and friends here when we want an intimate and authentic experience that is consistently fantastic. You're always treated like family in the classiest of ways and always have an absolutely outstanding meal. We look for any reason to go when we're back in the area and would recommend that you RUN, don't walk, here for dinner the next time you're looking for an amazing Italian experience. Also, I understand that it's February but they do have outside heaters to wait under if you happen to be waiting in any inclement weather and dining al fresco in the summer is what dreams are made of. enjoy!
google avatar

Yelp
What an absolute little gem Radicchio Cafe is! Tucked away just north of Old City, Radicchio is small and adorable but packs a stellar meal! It's BYO so make sure to bring some vino to go with. I happen to love vino, so especially loved the entire wine cork wall and the wine box trimmings. There's some cute al fresco tables outside as well, and they've got the big open windows for a nice day. Everything we had was delicious! My one coworker stressed that we HAD to get the octopus appetizer and man was he right, that was amazing! We also got the calamari which was dressed the same as the octopus, and the Focaccia Caprese which was equally as amazing. The table bruschetta was also super yum! The place was completely packed while we were there but service was super duper quick! I was in a party of 8 and everyone absolutely loved their meals. I had the Chicken Locanda which was perfect because I didn't want super heavy pasta especially after all those apps. The chicken was pounded thin and lightly breaded and the eggplant and arugula on top were the perfect complement. And ALL THAT PARM!!! It was really hard to pick an entree though because everything sounded so good. Few people at the table got the lamb ragu special, saw a few of the seafood dishes too. Overall, this place was phenomenal! I honestly would've never stumbled upon it had my coworker not suggested it for this dinner!

Yelp
Walked here (maybe I wouldn't recommend this) Tuesday night, i had been recommended to the NJ location but never made it so I saw it was a 13 min walk and decided to try it out finally. Situated near everything but not super close, its a great spot, you can see in the festive decorations and groups eating as you approach. I got in and was worried because I didn't make reservations but they don't take reservations. So I was in luck, seated right away and got to order quickly. Got the special salad (burrata) and the classic spaghetti and meatballs. Later told I should've gotten the calamari ahhhh I wish I wish. Solo dining so I wanted to have some restraint rather than over indulging. The food was great, if a little predictable in the way you want spaghetti and meatballs to be. I liked the atmosphere, service, food. Just not sure when I'll be back due to walk over from where I stay. I got a Lyft ride back. Most people there had cars so either rentals or locals so there's that.

Yelp
Radicchio is a neighborhood favorite. I've been here two times now and every time I've had such wonderful food and a great experience. This cute BYO is not that big in size, but thats what i love about it. You feel like your home. You feel like you with family. Their pink blush sauce is so good here. I have no idea what the secret ingredient is, but i could eat that sauce all day. I've had their chicken langolo (thin chicken cutlet, breaded with arugula and tomato on top). It's a hearty proportion and it's moist and flavorful. Their special appetizer one time i went was a burrata cheese with balsamic vinaigrette. I've had their shrimp pasta dish too. Big sized shrimp you get your monies worth! Overall you're here to enjoy your time. The staff are friendly and treat you like family. Best part? You're not rushed by anyone so you can sit and enjoy your wine until the bottle is empty.

David M.

Yelp
Love this spot great food and BYO!! Servers are attentive and have many recommendations

Yelp
We were pleasantly surprised with Radicchio. We went on a Tuesday night so the restaurant wasn't extremely busy. We had very good service and took the recommendation for the special and got the lamb ragu pasta and the burrata. The burrata was very good! We also got the fusilli delizia. I started with the lamb ragu pasta and thought there was no way the seafood pasta could be better and boy was I wrong. When I got to the fusilli delizia, I was blown away. The pink cream sauce was one the best things I've ever tasted! We dipped bread to make sure we got the last drops of the sauce. I would highly recommend this place and that dish! Everything else was really good as well.

J D.

Yelp
Totally loved this place! I haven't been here in more than 12 years and it's as good as I remember. My husband, who doesn't love Italian food (???) said: "best meal I've had in a minute." We had the octopus, the chicken locanda and the Branzino. All were delicious! Service was excellent!

Yelp
Stumbled upon Radicchio yesterday and decided to go in for an early dinner around 5:30pm on a Saturday. The outdoor area was jam-packed, but there were seats available inside. Score! We didn't know, but Radicchio is BYOB! We were bummed to not have anything with us, but good to know for next time. The staff were so friendly and the menu was stacked with lots of great options. Between the two of us we decided to share two apps (the grilled octopus and the clams/mussels in red) as well as one entree (farfalle with crabmeat, tomatoes, and arugula). The apps were insanely delicious and the portions were huge! We also enjoyed the pasta, but the sauce was a bit too "fishy", in my opinion. We were also given some bread and bruschetta to start which is always an appreciated touch :-) Great little find. I would definitely recommend!

Yelp
We had a large party for a friend's bday, about 13-16 people. The space is small but they were able to accommodate the crowd (call in advance). A majority of our party was late due to trouble finding parking(I recommend using a rideshare app). The staff was very friendly, food was amazing. Overall we had a great time.
google avatar

Alina R.

Yelp
The food is was very good. Upon arrival the host/server did not greet us or welcome us. We waited and after about 10 mins then I asked if we can have a table. We were seated right after. They were busy being that there were only the host and server taking and bringing out the orders. However, it was quick. Delicious food. Ask about specials. We did not and missed out on the grilled shrimp which is on the pictures on website. The location is cute and cozy.

Yelp
I had heard great things about this place, so I was excited to try it. The food was good, and the service was as well. We got the peppers, octopus, and lobster ravioli. The downside to this restaurant is probably the price- it was a little pricey for a BYO. That being said, I would go back.
