The Best Breakfast Sandwiches in the East Bay | Eater SF

"Blue-collar workers who wear Dickies by necessity frequent this no-frills joint where everybody knows your name. They serve breakfast sandwiches whatever way you want them, and can even make you a breakfast burger — if you want jalapeños on that, they’ll remember for next time. Bread is buttered on both sides and griddled while eggs are seasoned with a few shakes of flavored salt. Complimentary fruit rounds out your meal. For your health." - Ori Ravid

Coming here for 10+years . Really happy they survived Covid. Nice to see familiar faces. The son is consistently kind, patient hard working! Always keeping this running for/with Mom and Dad. They must be proud. Thank you for all the great meals made with care!:)

Google
Been coming here for years. Great place to stop in on a morning run and get some food. The kind of place that will let you come back and pay later if the internet is out for credit card purchases.

The man who works the counter here is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met, he always includes some delicious treat and a story and a charismatic smile. You can tell this is a family runner business as it feels very family oriented and I really appreciate the extra effort they take to make customers happy. I wanted to post a critique: I ordered a Philly and paid 11$ for this. This is pretty rough. I’ve eaten Phillies everywhere in the country and I’d say this is among the worst I’ve ever had. Many of their foods are great, this isn’t one of them. Try using better meat that isn’t a singular extremely thin slice that’s stale, stiff, dry and completely flavorless. And more of it, and more cheese and bread that doesn’t taste and have the texture of burnt cardboard. truly look at this thing and tell me this is an acceptable Philly Cheese steak.

I would have taken a picture but it was just that good! David is awesome and the food is exceptionally good!

I needed help Recombiputating a Stringed Hypintalcomitor and my pal Crosscut Kenny from Oaktown is going to save the day! I picked him up at his shop, The Wagon Works there on 26th and was going to go straight to Portnoy Lear's up to Broadway Terrace where I have the thing deployed but Ol Crosscut needs to eat first. Luckily the Railroad Stop Deli is only a block away from his shop! I've never been to this deli before, and all I can say is WOW! 5 Stars! ☆☆☆☆☆

Google
Great service from very nice folks. Came with candy and a tangerine included. The menu is vast for such a small place. Just my kind of spot.

Google

Google
Delicious breakfast burrito and everyone was very friendly! Loved sitting at the outside tables and enjoying the food. So glad to discover this neighborhood place and can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Super friendly, great prices, delicious sandwiches. They can make the sandwiches however you'd like and they threw in an extra treat with my sandwich...nice!

Yelp
Discovered this by getting on the wrong bus and needing a location to set for my rideshare. I picked this one based on where it was from me on maps and the name. Nice, helpful staff. Good selection for the space. Pretty fast, and food was good.

Yelp
I love this convenient neighborhood place. The owner is always hard working and friendly making great food in good sized portions for very reasonable prices. My favorite is their breakfast burritos. And it's a nice treat to find some complimentary snacks in with your order. Thanks

Yelp
Talk about your neighborhood sandwich shop! I had just grabbed some snacks from Magnolia Mini Mart https://www.yelp.com/biz/magnolia-mini-mart-oakland?hrid=GszifKbPeE2QJ5wNUX_uMA&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct) and was originally heading over to Twins Halal https://www.yelp.com/biz/twins-halal-house-and-bakery-oakland?hrid=6OZo9mRqjeVa0tB1FDxUtg&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct) when at the corner of 26th and Magnolia I was shocked to see a sandwich shop. I love a good sammich, so figured I'd stop in. I immediately got vibes from Prospect Park Sandwiches https://www.yelp.com/biz/prospect-park-sandwiches-oakland?hrid=KNklnB9KOVsS8Wp2tzWFZg&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct) - hole in the wall, locals only spot run by a Korean family, super friendly, offering breakfast, sandwiches, and teriyaki plates. Seriously, this is the West Oakland version of Prospect Park. You enter into what used to be the dining room - a fridge case to your left, the coffee station and what used to have a table to the right, and in front the menu, register, and kitchen. The nice man taking orders greeted me warmly and asked if I wanted to see a paper menu, but there is a huge menu above the register. The menu offers a mix of breakfast and lunch items. Breakfast including specials (combos), omelettes, sandwiches, and even side orders. The lunch option lists deli sandwiches, burgers, cheesesteaks, chicken teriyaki, and salads. While I love a good cheesesteak and chicken teriyaki sandwich, as this was my first time, I figured I'd get something classic. Went with the Turkey & Ham, on a sweet roll, with the veggies and mayo. It was a solid sandwich! What I didn't know is I could have gotten a side of fries, and based on the pictures, they look to be perfectly golden steak fries, which are the best kind of fry. That said, I did get a free bag of goldfish and some hershey kisses, which was a really nice treat. I wouldn't say this is worth going out of the way for just yet, but if you're in the neighborhood, this is a must visit spot. And as I am trying to frequent Magnolia Mini Mart more often, I think this will become my go to follow up spot (though do need to support Twins as well).

Yelp
An extremely satisfying, no-frills, unpretentious sandwich shop. Admittedly, the location isn't the best or most easily accessible. But I literally have no complaints about the quality of their sandwiches. Delicious stuff.
google avatar

Yelp
Just solid, can't go wrong at Railroad. It's a little small hole in the wall with VERY limited seating both indoors and outdoors. As soon as you walk in, it reminds you of eating in the Deep South. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but if you happen to be in the area stop on by. The food is amazing! Love the burgers, love the club sandwich, love the breakfast sandwiches etc. They also have the crispiest steak fries! Not too mention, they always give you a piece of candy & fruit w/ your meal. Please note this spot is only open for breakfast and lunch, M-F and is NOT wheelchair accessible.

Yelp
My new go to spot for breakfast on my way to work. The location is kinda outta the way in West Oakland on a street that still has the old railroad tracks. The man running it is super exceptional period! He is super friendly, accommodating, and makes a good ass meal!! I ordered a breakfast burrito and he makes it to order with whichever fillings you like, has lots of veggies too. It's filling and nutritious! He also dropped some fruit in my bag and is generous with the hot sauce. The coffee he is strong and cheap, exactly what a person would like, not sure if he's got plant milk options tho. Will be updating my review in the future when I try more stuff. But overall this is so much more than a deli! He's got a full breakfast menu and caters to the locals. Not a place to get the food and eat at tho. It's a pick up and dip type of spot. Great service great food great prices, 10/10 would recommend.

Yelp
Casual breakfast and lunch place that serves up the basics. Order the spaghetti, it's enough for two meals. Friendly folks and easy parking. Legit french toast or omelets. They are literally on a really old railroad track that had a four way stop back in the day. Sign is about to fall. It looks like from the 1930's?

Yelp
I can't believe I didn't know about this place till the other day. I love supporting local businesses. Especially ones who have been around for a long time. The spot has a dated charm that I miss. There's not a lot of places like this left in the town and it makes me sad. On to the food. The sandwich was good, i was pleased with the ingredients and I didn't get a crazy hangover after eating the sandwich (I just ate too much food). They have a lot of good options for sandwiches. I decided on getting the turkey sub with added bacon. They also give you some candy treats with your order! They really took me back with their selection of candies. The clerk and staff are friendly, as are the patrons attending this spot. I hope this place is here for years to come. We need to continue to support places like this! I'll definately be back *edited some info

Yelp
This place is just a drop in for lunch and I hear breakfast? I ordered a chicken Philly he made big chunky pieces with melted cheese it was okay but could have been better? This joint is busy during the week for lunch
google avatar

Yelp
Doesn't look like much when you pull up, definitely a hole in the wall. But one of the best sandwiches we've ever had. My husband and I split a Turkey club and wished we would have gotten our own. Also, a nice surprise of a little bag of Swedish Fish (my favorite) and a Cutie (fruit). They also have breakfast too, we may have to swing by on our way out of town. The people working there were very nice and accommodating. Don't let the neighbor discourage you from going. Would definitely go again and recommend it to my friends.
google avatar

Erika T.

Yelp
Stopped here on a Monday morning to grab my husband some breakfast and this place was the perfect start to my week. Not only, is the food delicious with vegetarian options, the guy working the counter is always super nice. I got the grit special with a veggie patty and hubby got a breakfast burrito with turkey sausage. If you don't know anything about trying to find a quick non pork breakfast spot then let me tell you the struggle is REAL! Well look no further, if you have a second and it's not out the way then I suggest you stop by and grab a bite. Plenty of turkey options and they make delicious grits. Haven't stopped by for lunch yet but I'm sure they probably wouldn't disappoint!!

Yelp
Railroad Stop Deli is literally a pit stop to pick up food to go. just a few tables inside. order at order. pay. pick up food when ready. not conducive for dining in. offerings: breakfast specials, omlettes, salads, soups, burgers, combos, gourmet/house/grilled sammies.... eats: turkey and avocado on french bread(7.50) -lots of turkey slices, some provolone, pretty of veggie -fresh tasting, generous portion of turkey. same bread. not much needed. -quick, courteous service. take outs: -not much parking nearby. -just average coffee noticed.

Richard W.

Yelp
I absolutely love this little hole in the wall deli. The food is fresh and everything in the menu is delicious. The service is always friendly and I love the complimentary mandarin oranges that come with a gourmet sandwich. It's a little small inside, so order for pickup if you can. If you can't, don't worry, service is quick.

Mario S.

Yelp
Great food and fast service. Found this spot because of my gf and try to go as much as I can.

Yelp
2020 update: been meaning to update for the poor wording used previously. This is one of my favorite local places to eat. The food is consistent and they have the best chicken teriyaki meal I've ever had. I've heard great things about some of their other dishes too but it's hard to convince myself to branch out when I know I'm gonna love that teriyaki.
google avatar

Efuru L.

Yelp
Very good customer service. Prices are great, food was pretty decent. Definitely would go back.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! The family that owns this is so sweet and the food is so delish! Just as you'd expect from a small family owned business. And they give you a lollipop and fruit snacks with your order which is a nice touch! Good amount of food for price. I got the chicken Philly cheesesteak with jalapeños and fries! A good lunch spot!!
google avatar

Jordan D.

Yelp
Good food and prices. Hole in the wall. Friendly servers. I got the chicken and onion sandwich.
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
I love this place. Excellent breakfast burritos and sandwiches. I also love the extra kind service and the fruits and candies they throw in with the meal. What a gem.
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
Swung in as they were one of the few open early places. Super cool, super friendly, covid safe hole-in-the-wall deli with a ton to offer. The loaded breakfast burrito is awesome and came out quick and fresh. Definitely worth a stop in on this side of the city.
google avatar

Matthew C.

Yelp
Great Club Sandwich! Great service. They don't shove avocado on everything and the prices are good too.
google avatar

T J.

Yelp
The nicest folks on the planet and comfort food at a reasonable price. Terrific breakfast or lunch stop when you are on the job. Thank you Railroad Stop Deli for serving the neighborhood with class!
google avatar

Camille L.

Yelp
Great value for a basic sandwich ($1 taken off their regular $7.50 sandwich since I didn't want cheese), bringing my total to $6.50 for a solid sandwich on a French roll. Thanks, West Oakland. Very friendly service as well.
google avatar

Laurence T.

Yelp
Zero pretention hole in the wall with looks that will make you want to drive away....but inexpensive, SOLID good-open 6am and a super duper value. Surprisingly big menu....and the food is surprisingly good (doesn't match the decor, which is east coast corner squalor)...try their omelettes for shy of $8.-a serious bargain that is seriously good. Can be empty and no wait. Tip optional type service. Nice little family-two generations or so operating it on a shoe string....and they try REAL hard to please. The American Dream on display. Way cool and my new go-to.
google avatar

Mollie U.

Yelp
So many great meals coming out of this tiny whole in the wall. Nicest staff, and the breakfast burrito is one of the best ever! If you're in the area check them out!
google avatar

Nick N.

Yelp
This is probably my favorite restaurant in oakland. The breakfast burrito is top notch and don't forget to try the spaghetti!
google avatar

Jessie A.

Yelp
Really good food. Great portions size and super nice owners. Everything they make is delicious

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
This place is still great as always! I usually don't order grilled dishes like burgers or omelets because they're just a bit heavy for me, but that doesn't mean they are not good and come in VERY generous portions. My personal recommendation is to get the deli sandwiches. Their Turkey Avocado sandwich tastes very fresh and it's so filling. The Veggie sandwich is also an excellent option for lunch. Their food usually comes with a piece of candy and a cutie (small mandarin). Such a sweet gesture and the perfect way to end a meal. The yalso got so many drink options, candy, coffee, chips, and even individual packages of Tylenol and Pepto. I work near the area and they've saved me a few times. I won't stop supporting Railroad Stop deli!
google avatar

JP C.

Yelp
Oh yea!!!! I am so glad I stumbled onto this deli! French roll is amazing! Deli cuts are fresh as well as the produce. Not the best part of town but I felt safe enough to eat out side at their patio seating area. Prices well and piled high! I found my west Oakland sandwich shop for sure!!! Great customer service and the sandwich came quick.
google avatar

Alex R.

Yelp
Hidden GEM. Deli sandwiches are the best! Turkey avocado sandwich with a nice touch of plum on the side to complete the combo.

Tim D.

Yelp
Wow! Forget all other spots locally for all taste buds and dietary needs. Family owned and operated Rail Road Stop Deli is an Oakland landmark! I ordered the special today and am just lovin' it! The guy behind me ordered 6 sandwiches, if that's not a sign I don't know what to say! I am speechless, this is above 5 stars for real, and it's OG local! Get off the road and eat up, I'm the newest regular and it's literally my first rip!
google avatar

Isela E.

Yelp
This place is one of the only sandwich spots in the area. They also have a spaghetti and teriyaki with vegetables special daily. Today I ordered the turkey, Swiss, and avocado sandwich with everything on it. It's really filling! They add a good amount of meat. I also got flamin hot funyuns and sparking water on the side. I think it's cool that they throw in a clementine with the sandwich. Get your vitamin C! This all came out to $10.29. I think kinda pricy but could be worse...
google avatar

Bigdogg S.

Yelp
I dont come tht often because im trying to lose weight but when i do ITS OFF DA HOOK. I love this neighborhood spot close to the job
google avatar

Jordan S.

Yelp
Must be very good sandwiches, debit card got crompised to this place for 2 separate purchases for over $30. Checking the menu and prices either the person was hungry or this place is bomb. Will try and check this place out even with the fraud transaction. :)
google avatar

Tamara A.

Yelp
I was in the neighborhood getting my car repaired and I stumbled on to this place. It is great. The cashier was so friendly and helpful. Their menu is varied and really good. Made my shitty day much better.
google avatar

Lonnie C.

Yelp
My first time here. Small little dive of a deli but friendly folks and the Chicken Philly is really good. They don't try to do too much with it. Just tender grilled chicken, mushrooms and grilled onions with Jack cheese on a toasted roll. That is it. Then the steak fries are pretty dang good too
google avatar

Bryan M.

Yelp
Nothing special. Got the #3, turkey sandwich, lots of meat, but the sandwich itself was nothing special. Ever since I ate there I have had bad stomach cramps.
google avatar

Rod N.

Yelp
Service is friendly, food is tasty, and the price is low for he quality you get Probably only fits 10 people inside max. Comfortably 8. But there are two tables outside. In the morning, they're in the sun and is quite pleasant. But the neighborhood has no scenery. It's an industrial part of town

Destiny B.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to go on my lunch! I've been going here for a little over a year and I love the consistent positive attitude in there! They don't have a huge vegetarian menu but I usually get the same thing anyways (veggie burger with fries) they are generous with the fries which I love, the veg breakfast burrito & grilled cheese is great too (just ask them to go light with the butter) Wide variety of drinks & snacks! They do have rush hours 11am-1pm. Fast pick up orders if you call in & they always give you candy or a cutie with your togo order (: great atmosphere, sweet owners & yummy food!
google avatar

Swan S.

Yelp
Got hungry while having my car serviced and discovered this hidden gem! The staff is friendly. The food is fresh and delicious. The price is outstanding. There's a patio for those who like to dine in sunshine. They even have low carb options for the fad dieters.

chris m.

Yelp
Sandwiches from here are delicious, I usually go with The Club, a BLT or on the specials(fish sandwich is bomb) but people in line rave about everything. The waits are never too long but any wait is worth it here.
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
Service can make all the difference. I don't frequent this deli, but when I visit I am always greeted by the friendly cashier. He knows the names of his regulars, and always has friendly banter with them. Instead of calling out your order, he'll come around the counter and hand you your order. When ordering a sandwich, he'll ask if you want chips and a drink and it is not intended as an upsale, but as a way to make sure you have a complete meal. Food is above what you'd expect for the space/environment. Also, odd area for breakfast or lunch, so fills a void for the neighborhood.
google avatar

Nina B.

Yelp
In West Oakland (a mostly industrial area) this place is a diamond in the rough. The rough being Taco Trucks an Ampm or a hot dog cart. There is a small selection of food options nearby and I was fortunate to find this place. This place is small - but cozy! There is seating inside and and a table or two outside so you can wait for your food or dine in. Parking can be tough. The staff (the young guy working the counter) was very polite, friendly and nice. I have only tried lunch from here once and must say the sandwich I got was really good (and fresh). I had a turkey sandwich which was huge. It came with everything and was def- enough for two people. They offer their meals with fries and a soda for $2.00 more. Which works out to about $9.00 (an average meal anywhere). They have salads, soup, tons of sandwiches, spaghetti, teriyaki chicken and rice and so much more. My co-workers love this place and swear by everything; based on the sandwich I got from there I can see why. I will def. come back and try other things.
google avatar

Kenny L.

Yelp
In any large industrial neighborhood taco truck and other such food trucks usually rove around going from place to place to bring food to workers on break or lunch. This is like one of those trucks, but it is stationary and the quality is just a little bit better but the prices are just as inflated. Decent breakfast burrito and the salads are probably the freshest in West Oakland, but that's not saying much.
google avatar

Nate P.

Yelp
Their homemade chicken soup is some of the best I've had anywhere! Very helpful family owned business. Try the Korean short ribs and the bulgogi!
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
I love this place and would never hesitate to recommend it. I eat here at least once a week and am always happy with my food. The french bread reminds me of po-boys IN New Orleans and their fries are fresh cut. A total gem, we need more of these in West Oakland.
