"At first glance, Rainey Street looks like a sleepy suburban avenue with quiet wooden verandas and picket fences, but at night, it really wakes up. Here, the craftsman-era bungalow homes, many dating back to the late 19th Century, have been renovated into a string of hipster-friendly bars and restaurants. Wander around and you’ll see food trucks tucked in alongside renowned nightlife spots like  Half Step, Geraldine’s, Lustre Pearl, Emmer & Rye, and Banger’s Sausage House & Beer Garden. It’s a spot to relax on a porch or picnic table with your kids or your dog during the day, and party with friends or your significant other at night." - Jonathan Thompson, Mandy Ellis

Google
A street with food trucks and restaurants. This street has the atmosphere of a city festival, where you can relax while enjoying a meal outside. When I went there, it was a weekday night, so nearly half of the shops were closed. It would be great if all the shops were open.

Google
$50 to park for 3 hours! As of 7/1, a large section of the street is closed and under construction. Despite this, drivers still think it’s fun to try burnouts in their $hitboxes!

Fun little street with unusual bars great variety and food trucks on the corner.

Google
What a interesting street! It has so much character. I can just imagine how much fun there will be grabbing a beer with your friends at any one of these places. There are two food truck lots off the Rainey street. Some of the bars have their own food truck onsite. I had the pleasure checking out the area during the day and took some photos. Cannot wait to see the street come life in the dark.

Google
Party street USA! You will forget there is a pandemic going on by coming to this street where most are not wearing masks and party is rocking. Personally not my vibe even if it were not a pandemic going on. Too much noise and party for me!

Ginger R.

Yelp
There were a lot of places to eat and drink along of 1 mile strip. I wish we would've realized that before turning back next time, we will try some more spots.

Christina H.

Yelp
RIP Rainey Street--she hasn't been the same since pre-covid. Too many historical houses and bars are gone. The nightlife and Sunday Fundays on Rainey were in their prime back then, but now, it's just one big construction zone waiting to transform into more million dollar high rises. RIP: Container Bar, The Bungalow, Tommy want Wingy

Marcos D.

Yelp
A nice Austin food truck court, that has a cool funky vibe all it's own. It's a good place to hang out and plan how to attack the bars lining down the street.

Ilene S.

Yelp
Great area for drinks, hanging out with friends, listening to music and of course food trucks.

Cesar C.

Yelp
great place to visit in Austin! Live music in just about every bar, bbq joint, I will say hopefully it doesnt lose its charm, with all the high rise contruction right on it. we enjoyed the food trucks, some hot chocolate and being able to walk to tons of attractions near by. during the day, there is alot of contructions, the back alleys a bit dirty and muddy but usually during business hours most businesses are open/have patios that you can walk thru. the food trucks have alot of variety for food options! lobster, arepas, tacos, donuts, pizza, you name it, there is probl. a food truck in rainy that sells it.

Tiffany D.

Yelp
It reminds me of frat row, but young adulting and adulting style. This one street has these mobile shops with houses turned to open bars, restaurants and experience of bar hopping regime going on here. A lot of people are with drinks in front of the front yard patio mingling away. I haven't seen anything like this besides college days on fraternity row. Pretty happening and worthy to check out when in Austin.

E B.

Yelp
Ruined by condo high-rises Don't bother. They've all complained and destroyed our charming beloved Rainey Street. Yay

Lynn S.

Yelp
We spent one night on our trip to Austin at Rainey Street, so fun, I would say this is for the over 35 club to hang out. Many little bars and restaurants. Our night was filled with a hair stylist convention's last night out, every place had different hosts. We enjoyed playing cornhole and the outdoor section of the Clive.

Stephanie R.

Yelp
Great place! Lived in Austin years ago and had to visit Rainey upon my return. Still like I remembered it.

Gary P.

Yelp
Lots of old turn-of-the-century houses converted into restaurants and bars and music Halls. Like the rest of Austin there are food trucks everywhere. Very lively street. ID at every door. Only thing that would make it better is if they close the street at night to traffic.

Nicole T.

Yelp
This street if filled with bars, restaurants, and food trucks, making it a great 1 stop shop for a great night. The food trucks are mostly open during the evenings. When going during Christmas time, plenty of bars have decor. Most of the places here also have an outdoor space, but on a saturday night, they all get very packed. Would definitely recommend to anyone checking out Austin nightlife

Yelp
Eh...I actually came to Rainey Street for their Food Truck Row. Well...it actually wasn't exactly that. Along this short street...which by the way, is very active with plenty of restaurants and bars filled with young students from the University of Texas, I'd say most of the action is maybe half of a mile long at most. I visited here back on a quiet Saturday in September...yet since the Longhorns were playing an afternoon football game, regardless of whether there was a pandemic going on...people were out in full force hanging out and watching the game. Parking wasn't too difficult. Basically I found a spot along the side of the street and paid the meter for 2 hours. Walking up and down Rainey Street...there were 2 "little parks" featuring a bunch of food trucks. Well...a Bunch? More like 5 - 6 trucks in each parking field. While I explored both areas before deciding on which truck to eat at...I will say that probably at least half of them were closed! And for a Saturday in season? That made no sense. But...because of the pandemic...I guess anything goes in 2020. Both Food Truck parks had plenty of picnic tables with awnings to enjoy a nice lunch. The 1st Food Truck area near the intersection with River Street had a Sandwich Truck, Greek Food Truck, Taco Truck, Indian Food Truck and a truck featuring food from Nepal and Tibet. I wasn't too thrilled with any of the choices here so I decided to check out the 2nd Truck area... Here at the 2nd Food Truck section right next to UnBARlievable Restaurant...almost all of the food trucks in this area were closed! That was unfortunate. Included in the closings were a Venezuelan Kitchen Truck, a Hot Dog Truck and a few others though I can't recall what types of cuisines they were. But...the 1 and only food truck open in this field was the exact same Sandwich Truck from the 1st area. And I wasn't too thrilled with having a sandwich. Well...when thinking about which truck to choose...I went back to the 1st area closer to River Street and went with the Greek Food Truck but when I approached them...they mentioned that they were closed for the time being! What? That's disappointing. Ultimately I just didn't care where I went. I was hungry and simply settled for the Sandwich Truck. At the Sandwich Truck (the actual name was Mr. Sandwich)...I picked the Brisket Sandwich for $12.50. It came with French Fries and I had to buy a can of soda separately. Overall, the sandwich was messy and unsatisfying. I think the best part about the Food Truck areas was sitting down at the picnic tables and enjoying the relaxing atmosphere. On this Saturday back in September the weather was perfect outside without a cloud in the sky. So...I really enjoyed the setting. Finally, just walking up and down the 1/2 mile of Rainey Street was sort of a leisurely stroll for me. I didn't mind looking at all the unique restaurants and lounges. And...they all featured plenty of outdoors seating. I can understand why this street would be so popular. Who wouldn't want to hang outside and enjoy the weekend socializing? Other than the pretty disappointing Food Trucks area...I'd recommend browsing around Rainey Street...good for afternoon drinks, lunches, dinners, dates and watching ballgames.

Yelp
A short street near downtown, Rainey Street has a large number of drink establishments, some restaurants, and several food trucks. We tried several locations and enjoyed them, and the walk between 'em. I recommend that. Go, walk around, and enjoy the boozing.

Stacie M.

Yelp
Fun area full of bars and food trucks! Very walkable and with a cool vibe. Several venues have music. Drink prices were in the $11 range along the street. Lots of nice outdoor seating and photo opportunities.

Mia M.

Yelp
After realizing that 6th street was not by my scene, I was pleasantly surprised to find Rainey street. Although fun and upbeat, the atmosphere was also clean and safe.

Dan F.

Yelp
I read somewhere that Rainey Street at nights is like an adult version of frat row. I don't know about that but there were some nice places to sit, have a drink/eat, while listening to live music. The couple of hours we were there, everyone seemed to be having a good time. Perhaps it was the mounted police, or patrol cars being highly visible, everyone seemed well behaved. This area changed over the past decade into a club and restaurant zone. Rainey Street was recommened by a tour I took earlier in the day, but was told to come back in the evening to experience it better. It's a little sad to see the street's charming homes get bought out by restauranteurs and F&B enterprises to commercialize the area. It's not so bad for the residents I suppose. The last hold out resident (the slanted house) sold his home for millions in 2019. Food trucks and bars is what people come here for. People watching is fun too. Like music? There are clubs and live music on stage. Fun place to visit but come in the evenings, and better yet, weekends for the full experience.

Nicole J.

Yelp
Omg we made the mistake of visiting this must see Austin destination on a Friday afternoon. It was already in full party mode. Think spring break , bachelorette party's, sweaty twerking , and intense Austin heat. Not for those over 30. Hahaha it's a fun experience just for the heck of it, not kid friendly. Recommend going mid week for a chiller vibe.

Bruce K.

Yelp
My Aggie friend told me that Rainey Street was a "must do" for a chance to get a few beers and see some live music. While Sixth Street competes with Rainey Street, this is a whole lot more fun. In mid-December, the crowds were pretty calm. Cold and wet weather definitely dampened the mood but there were still some crazy and loud folks to be seen. Lots of girls, lots of dudes, this is clearly the upscale hangout. A few dozen converted homes that date back to the Great Depression, it's no longer residential and has turned into a nightlife district for sure. Pick a house, any house. They're all full of booze and live music. There are also food trucks along the way, pedicabs to bring you from one end to the other, and some paid (expensive) parking. [Review 10177 overall, 1763 of 2018.]

Yelp
This street of cute bungalows turned to bars with food trucks, games like ping pong, corn hole, air hockey, and then fire pits and outdoor seating, it was a delightful respite sitting and chatting with friends, enjoying good food truck grub, cocktails, we closed the place down. I'd definitely return next time we're in Austin!

James R.

Yelp
This is one of those Austin places. Essentially this is just one street with historic bungalows offering food and drink. You can find just about everything here from food trucks scattered in lots to a beer hall that serves beer on so many different taps. This is a great place to spend one of your evenings in Austin. The location is close to downtown so it is easily accessible.

Greg D.

Yelp
It is no longer something special with craftsman houses with businesses in. It's all huge high rises now with no parking.

Paul D.

Yelp
I have seen this street give birth and transform to what it is today. I remember the street was lined with old houses which quickly being transformed into bars and restaurants, but the city had already zoned part of it to be multi family condos. It was kind of a pop up party street. There are still many houses left and my guess the city may be trying to keep it like this. There has been a few residential and hotel high rises but built on vacant land. This place is a hot spot situated near the convention center and 6th Street area, and Lady Bird Lake. At night this place wakes up but even during the day you can enjoy some good food and drinks. It is safe to walk around but like anyplace else be careful especially late at night when the bars start to close. Austin has a bunch of trendy places to hang out at and some are located here. There is not much parking unless you find a street parking spot near it, but best solution is to park in the convention center parking garage and walk, pedicab or ride share here. Anyone who is young and at drinking age will love this street.

Jordan S.

Yelp
Do not come here if you're not a horny college-age child. I read in many places that this was a more mature version of dirty 6th, which could not be further from the truth. I came here on a Saturday evening, and the air was filled with cigarette smoke and impending regret. I'm in my late 20s, and this place was not the vibe. We walked past the main part of Rainey street and arrived at a quieter area with a decent whiskey cocktail bar and some good food. That place was called Standard Proof Whiskey Co.

Steph C.

Yelp
Rainey Street isn't exactly my kind of bar scene, but I enjoyed visiting with Matt B. while we were in Austin last month. It was a fun little street lined with bars and restaurants converted from old houses, all of them with plenty of outdoor space for lounging with drinks. I'd never seen a street quite like it, so it was well worth a stroll as long as we were in town. We went on a Sunday afternoon around 4:00, and the whole street was popping, with loud music and energetic crowds and a young, fratty vibe. It was a bit much for this married couple from Los Angeles, accustomed to sitting in hipster bars with a round or two of craft cocktails. I don't think I'd want to go anywhere near this place on a Friday or Saturday night. That said, it's a unique place with a ton of places to eat and drink, and I'm glad we checked it out while we were in Austin. I'd recommend it if you're a tourist or a young local looking to party.

Vlad D.

Yelp
Crowd: 20s and late 20s, cleaner and more upscale than 6th Street Music: hip hop at unBARlievable, something else (EDM?) at Tipsy Alchemist Closing time: 2am, like elsewhere in Austin Safety: seemed very safe on a Saturday night at 2am. Drunk young women walking around in peace. Though I saw a bunch of cars with swangers, and in particular this red Cadillac that has been seen through Austin before.

Barry T.

Yelp
Went to a few spots in the district including Bangers and Lucille's. Great atmosphere and loved the mix of ages that were out and about on a Saturday afternoon

Amy H.

Yelp
I saw this cute little street on my bike tour that after the tour was over I had to go! Rainey Street is filled with tons of bars, restaurants, and food trucks! The ultimate hang out place. I loved the vibe of this place!! I was there on a Sunday - was not able to experience it at night. Don't forget street parking is free Sunday! But it's hard to find parking. There is a parking lot right on one of the ends of the strip and it costs $15 for 4 hours. We we're definitely there for all of those 4 hours drinking beer and eating food. Sadly the food truck area wasn't open yet - but that didn't stop me from eating! There are food trucks at most bars. We had sausage at bangers and pizza from food truck via 313 at craft pride. I wanted to try Indian food but I just didn't have the room. They have almost everything you could want! It's a must do when in Austin!!

Amanda D.

Yelp
Super fun. Used to be the new bachelor party spot before the COVID. I liked the young professional scene a lot more than the college kids scene. Still fun though

Jodi H.

Yelp
If you gotta compare it to sixth street it's cuz they both suck. Rainey is nicer, cleaner, safer...at least. But same prices and traps: can't escape it. Less repulsive, depending on who you ask. My brother has local friends living in (and from) Austin who reluctantly took him here while we were on dirty sixth because they're obviously better than us. So baby bro was the first one who educated us about a thing called "fraternity" vibes. I'm assuming it's the buzz word thrown around the topic and he regurgitated it because he's an Ivy League, UK Golden Triangle grad coming from schools not afraid of platform bans and can't possibly have experienced this level of basic Greek life. So know that either way you take it in you're getting a glimpse of off-campus social life. University students galore making you wonder if undergrads are graduating later because how are they buying drinks? Fake IDs? Like on 6th St. you're carded before entering, but club vibes are lower here, less cabaret row and more pregame parking lot, even tho curfew is 2:00AM everywhere. If you can only visit one party street in Austin I'd still suggest Rainey over sixth ... but South Congress over all. That's like comparing bananas to bananas to plantains though, sorry to bring nice fruit into it. I guess pick your poison. For me, frats turn me off just as much as dive scum.

Chris A.

Yelp
Tons of restaurants and bars to try, live music and food trucks, parking available, nice walking distance about a block, located near the city

Robert C.

Yelp
This is a Foodie-topia if I ever been/seen one. Food trucks on the entire block on both sides of the street. Food from hamburgers, Street Tacos, Middle Eastern, Asain, and Fusion. If you can find anything here, go to fast food and continue to order food by combo numbers.

Yen Yen C.

Yelp
Nice street to walk up and down with plenty of bars and restaurants. For beers: Craft Pride and Banger's Sausage. Amazing tap list!! For food: tons of food trucks. For music: you have to walk pass each bar and determine which is your jam. For a great time: be yourself and don't act a fool!

Sandra S.

Yelp
Ironically we visited Rainey street today on a rainy day. It was only a block full of mostly bars, eateries and food trucks. Most of the shops were not opened around 12pm (maybe because it was considered early??). It was very hard to park on this specific street. The closest parking is at the end of Rainey street and it was so expensive ($15 for 4 hrs), when we wanted to stay for 1 hr only. Glad to have visited Rainey street, but did not find it that special. Maybe night life is more exciting than daytime.

Rebekah T.

Yelp
Before my trip to Austin, I've never seen the development of a street that impressed me more. I learned more about Rainey with each Austin native I talked to and each place I visited on this street. The area over the years has been redeveloped from a run down residential neighborhood to a thriving gastropub, restaurant and bar scene. These interesting new places preserve the historic feeling of the neighborhood utilizing that home comfort feeling, rooms set up with chairs and tables, outdoor spaces and family farm table style seating. It's comfy. I love old architecture and modern design. I love seeing buildings being renovated, I love the old and the new alike. I not only went to school for Architecture, Design and Construction Management - I love Cooking, new Restaurants, Brew Pubs and Bars. Walking down Rainey Street, you can see the old houses yet to be renovated and full of potential. Houses that were so crooked you wondered how the doors shut. Overgrown with ivy or just a facade just standing there alone. Pretty in a run down kinda way. The development of the historic area is as unique as each building on Rainey Street. I loved visiting the area and recommend going while in Austin.

Tim W.

Yelp
Was told this was a happening street at night and pleasantly surprised. There is several blocks of small bars, restaurants and two food truck parks. Not much parking. Mixed aged crowd throughout but was lively all night and during the day. The area is much more cleaned up then in other part of downtown. Great job in keeping everything confined to the one street. Now they just need to cut off traffic.

Brandon M.

Yelp
This is an awesome area in Austin. Great for young crowds with all the bars, families to take a stroll, and older crowd to sit outside, have a drink, and people watch. Electric Taxi buses were cool, all lit up and blinged out. Only downside is all the abandoned electric scooters. Come on people, at least put them out of the way instead of just strewn out on the street.

Sean Matthew L.

Yelp
Listen. I get it. Rainey Street used to be the cool trendy hip Austin thing like no other. Then we ruined it. It got so good we kicked it in its teeth, removed half of it and added more polished versions or huge condos. I hear that. I understand. We move on. It's still Rainey Street, the sign for the Street is the same. There are more polished things but a lot of the old are still operating and rocking. 1/2 step is solid for an amazing cocktail. Bangers is a nice beer garden addition. The Hotel Van Zandt that went in is whatever. But Geraldine's on the 4th floor, choice. Views you could never get on Rainey before you now can. So, there is a lot to still be said for Rainey. It's a great choice to hit up a lot of options. 6th Street can get aggressive and too crowded sometimes. Rainey is here to help.

Justin W.

Yelp
Great little street to wander up and down. We especially enjoyed food bring a restaurant with seating in the front so we could people watch. Many great food choices including Mexican, American, and sweet desserts. If you are looking for a less chaotic version of 6th street - this is your place.

Tomas R.

Yelp
Are you tired of drunken underage kids vomiting their way across dirty sixth? How about the pretentious vibes and those vodka tonic drinkers on West Sixth? Not in the mood for some clubby music on fourth and fifth streets? Well do we have you covered! Come on over to Rainey Street and enjoy a plethora of bars converted from quaint little houses. There's various styles of music featured at all the bars and I must say one of my favorite ones is the Container Bar. No need of running into club kids, as this street is more of a kickback and knock bar a few drinks (or 10) type of scene. The music is great but you'll find ample seating at these bars. Everyone is dressed pretty casual on this street and there's plenty of food options when you're craving a late night bite. So grab your friends and enjoy a night or a Sunday Funday here.

Huan C.

Yelp
Houses/Restaurants/Bars + Food Trucks + Young Professionals (20s & 30s) = Rainey Street This has the makeup of a college frat house but yet it isn't.. Maybe because everybody here is in their 20s and 30s. This is more of an organized social gathering that you would see in the movies. Everybody is mature and enjoying a good old time. The stuff of movies I would tell ya. There are ample of food selection, music, bars so there is a bit for everybody. A lot of tourists come here as well so everybody is pretty friendly and just enjoying themselves.

Stefano Z.

Yelp
Super fun, nice crowd, good places to drink. This is the heart of Austin fun!!! Nice for an afternoon or evening with a group of friends!

Liz W.

Yelp
Ugh. It does *not* feel more grown up than 6th Street, as one Yelper has claimed, that is silly. 6th is at least grungy/gross/fun. Rainey is the land where the basic bitches roam free. It started off as a cool concept, and it's architecturally nice, but, I mean really folks.

Heather A.

Yelp
When in Austin and interested in good, sophisticated live music and drink, GO TO RAINEY STREET. 'Half step' is a great craft cocktail joint, 'Craft Pride' has excellent Texas craft beer choices and live music, and 'Lucille' had a nice vibe complete with hammocks and fans with misters (important in the Summer). Great energy on this street. An Austin experience.

Robert B.

Yelp
Meh. Austin condescendence settled among neat old homes. Something about the whole area just didn't settle right with me and my wife. Bartenders at three places were rude, something my wife and I rarely encounter. Seemed the whole area (with a few exceptions) were a bit stuck on themselves. I've not encountered this before, so it was an awkward scenario. Maybe it was because we were in our 50's and this is geared to younger affluent scenes? Not sure. The food trucks were mostly closed, so not many food options st 5pm on a Saturday. We tried various pubs, stayed several hours, and then went to another area to have fun. Just wasn't our scene.

Curt C.

Yelp
Such a cool concept! This is a great place to go bar hopping south of downtown Austin. There are a lot of old houses converted into bars and funky dive restaurants. The old homes all look to have been built around a century ago, and have been gutted and reinforced to hold up to rowdy parties, live bands, and beer! There are food trucks dispersed up and down the area, with lots of places to grab some grub, or find a portapotty. The area with bars and restaurants is spread over several blocks up and down Rainey St, so I'd recommend biking it. Parking can be challenging through here. The bars and restaurants along here vary in price and theme, so be sure to check them all out.

Annabelle V.

Yelp
A street full of house parties. Rainey Street is a collection of renovated houses turned into bars. They all have different vibes and themes to them, which is a lot of fun. Be warned, it gets P A C K E D quite often, especially with bachelorette parties. There are also plenty of food trucks around if you get a case of the munchies after bar-hopping. If you love visiting new bars and exploring different night life spaces, you must visit Rainey. Not in to night life? Steer clear, there are hordes of quite drunk people everywhere and lots of music. That being said, you could catch a calmer atmosphere early evening on a weekday if you still want the experience minus the crowds.

Lorrie M.

Yelp
This is the most amazing concept ever. Find an area with a bunch of uninhabited, dilapidated, or otherwise unwanted houses. Turn every house into a house party complete with bars backyard games, and beer pong and what do you have? Rainey Street! Although people come and go on Rainey and some businesses are clearly catered for the potentially not 21 and over ... this place is still awesome. You can park in the lot, and just walk around and "house hop" between the various bars here. My favorites are Clive, Craft Pride and Icehauser (sp?) The staff at every bar is usually friendly, and this area is frequented by cabbies, and uber / lyft drivers alike so you will have no problems finding a ride home. Definitely worth checking out!

Mi Rae C.

Yelp
Fun street for all your boozing escapades. Hop around the many historic country houses turned bars and enjoy the slow flow of Texas y'all.

Brittany C.

Yelp
I was recently in Austin for a bachelorette party and we all loved Rainey Street. I was here on a Saturday afternoon, and then again on Sunday evening for the EAGLES(!) vs Dallas football game. On Saturday we visited several bars with a group of 17 girls. We started at beer garden, then went to the fun place across the street with the slide and big giraffe, and honestly I know we went to at least one more bar after that but the exact details are slightly fuzzy. That giraffe bar had some pretty strong (but good) drinks! Sunday evening we went to one outside bar that had a full dance floor at 6pm! After that we went to more of a sports bar with a food truck outside that severed delicious chicken and tater tots. I feel like Rainey Street is something that every college town should have. It's a super fun atmosphere with lots of selections of bars.
