The Best Teriyaki in Seattle | Eater Seattle

"Despite the tragic death of its owner, Rainier Teriyaki stands proudly as a beloved pillar of its community. Co-owner Hansoo Kim was killed in January 2023 during a robbery and — after a couple of months — the restaurant reopened at the insistence of Hansoo’s younger brother, Eunsoo Kim. Today, Rainier Teriyaki continues to thrive and the Kim family still serves its community with a smile. The restaurant is often filled with regulars who are greeted by their first names. Portions are generous and prices honest—a hallmark of a beloved neighborhood teriyaki spot. Rainier separates itself with a made from scratch sauce that’s perfectly sweet, and every teriyaki order comes with extra teriyaki sauce and sambal chili to boot." - Joey Carreon

In this teriyaki town, nobody does it better than Rainier Teriyaki - Review - Seattle - The Infatuation

"Somehow, the world has collectively forgotten that teriyaki was invented in Seattle. Not us, though. After you remind everyone of this crucial fact, send them straight to Rainier Teriyaki—the gold standard. At this Mt. Baker counter, the chicken has a perfect smoky char and the sauce caramelizes around the juicy edges of every bite. But it’s the little things that make us love the restaurant even more. There's a fresh iceberg salad packed separately to avoid soggyness, ginger-specked gyoza with golden-blistered skin, and ramekins of extra salad dressing and teriyaki sauce given that you never need to ask for. Grabbing takeout is ridiculously fast without any drop in quality. But the straightforward counter-service setup with a few tables is comfortable for dining in, too, and lets you focus on the important job at hand—eating as much teriyaki as possible. Food Rundown photo credit: Nate Watters Chicken Teriyaki & Gyoza Mariah Carey has The Emancipation Of Mimi—Rainier Teriyaki has this. It’s a combo plate of all the things they do best. And while adding in the gyoza does mean less teriyaki than you would usually get, it's worth it. photo credit: Nate Watters Chicken Katsu Yes, the chicken teriyaki is the restaurant’s primary stunner, but they also know how to whip up a great chicken katsu. It has a featherlight breading that stays crisp even on a bed of hot rice. Chicken Breast Teriyaki This dish is tender and delicious, and makes us feel bad we ever referred to chicken breast as thighs’ “boring younger sister.”" - Kayla Sager-Riley

Google
Amazing service and good prices. We got spicy chicken teriyaki and beef teriyaki and both were amazing. A bunch if sauces to choose from and a lot of items in teb menu. They have a small parking, but its good enough. Definitely recomend!!

Google
Ordered the beef and chicken teriyaki combo with gyoza (T20) for 18.99 and was not disappointed. This place does teriyaki right, although some may say the sauce is too sweet for their liking. Personally, the sauce paired with the fried rice was well balanced. The gyoza was crispy but lacked flavor, and the dipping sauce it came with was too vinegary. I shared this plate with my sibling and we could only finish half of it. Great value for the amount of food you get. Also got the bulgogi kimbap for $8.99 and found that the amount of rice was too much. I prefer a thin layer of rice so the filling inside can shine. Service was great! Will come back in the future to try their yakisoba or chow mein.

Kenzie Leckenby

Google
The food is good, large portions for the price. My only gripe is that the sauce is almost overpoweringly sweet. But that's a personal preference other than that, great staff, good food.

Google
My boyfriend and I went here while visiting Seattle. We absolutely loved the food and the employees were so kind. We will definitely have to come back when we visit the area. 10000/10 recommend coming here!! The man who took our order was one of the kindest people we have met.

Google
They have the best teriyaki in town all freshly made, with really great hospitality. Very nice people and kid friendly. They always make us feel welcome. I'm from Seattle and I've been going here for at least 20 years. Highly recommend!

Google
Chef Kenji Lopez did a YouTube review of teriyaki spots in the Seattle area and this was one of his favorites and I can see why. Amazing rice, great chicken and a good salad. I think it took like 5 minutes or so. Definitely worth driving 20+ minutes.

Becca

Google
Love this place, consistently great food. The chicken is always juicy and tender, with nice charred crispy bits. Rice is cooked perfectly every time. Portions are good for the price as well. I personally like teriyaki sauce to be less sweet than what they use here, but everything else is 10/10 so it’s worth it. Their dressing and salad is fresh, it’s a sweet sort of ginger sesame vinaigrette I believe. Very kind employees too!

Olivia

Google
This is the best teriyaki restaurant in Seattle. The food is always great and the employees are very friendly and kind. I enjoyed the spicy chicken teriyaki. Hot sauce tastes so good!!! My friend loved the shrimp fried rice so much. Everything was great. I highly recommend this restaurant!

Yelp
The people were polite they are hard working and their food is godly they also serve you in a flash

Yelp
Hidden gem for sure! It's super quaint and small but constantly busy because for how awesome the food is. The handmade Crab Rangoon's are worth the trip!

Yelp
There's still places around Seattle that are iconic one way or another that I haven't fully been to till recently, and this is one of those places, though I was here last year before I started reviewing places. It's situated on busy Rainier Ave, and shares its small parking lot with Vietnamese restaurant Thien Phat next door. I got here around 5pm on a Saturday evening to a cozy interior with many tables for seating, a nice teriyaki smell, and very kind owners who would always make sure that I had everything I needed throughout my time here. They have a large selection of items, though the teriyaki combos stood out the most to me. I got their triple combo, which had chicken and beef teriyaki, gyoza, salad and fried rice. The portions were huge, and I ended up having to box some it to take home. As for the food, it's as great as I remember it from last year! Both the chicken and beef were tender and the teriyaki sauce on both was not too sweet and had the right amount of thickness to it. My favorite was the gyoza since it was more savory than the rest, and nicely done as well. The fried rice was a little bland but I didn't mind that since it acted more like a palette cleanser for me, and so was the salad. This was a satisfying $19 plate, and it could easily be split into two portions! Love this place so much, and can't wait to come back for some quick and tasty food!

Yelp
Generous portion. Fast, friendly service. I had the chicken and beef teriyaki combo. $21.68 w/ tax and tip. Easily enough for two meals, maybe even three. I took it to-go. It was still warm when I got home. The side salad was fresh and crisp. Dressing was kind of a creamy honey mustard? Tasty. I actually thought the beef was better than the chicken. Way more tender than I expected. The chicken was still good, but the beef surprised me. I thought the rice would be too many carbs, but splitting the meal into at least two, it's just right. Winner, winner, BEEF and chicken dinner!

Yelp
Everything about Rainier Teriyaki was 5 star!! The Service- the kindest The Food- the most delicious The portions- the biggest Rainier Teriyaki may look unassuming from the outside, but step in and you are automatically greeted by the sweetest man to ever be alive. He had the biggest smile on his face and was just so thoughtful and so attentive during our visit. The menu has a lot of different teriyaki options to choose from but we went with chicken teriyaki plates (classic). The plate comes with a salad with a delicious dressing. We opened up our teriyaki chicken plate and it was huge. The plate could easily last for 2-3 meals. It was stacks on stacks of chicken pieces along with the two big scoops of rice. The meat was so tender and I loved how saucy the chicken was! The tables had bottles of teriyaki sauce on them so that you could add even more to your chicken and rice. I know that Seattle's teriyaki scene has a lot of choices, but Rainier is supreme!

Yelp
Tucked away in a small strip mall, this cozy teriyaki spot feels like stepping into a warm family kitchen. The restaurant is run by a kind Korean family and they provided very friendly service. The C25 combo (Honey Garlic Chicken and Chicken Teriyaki) was absolutely delicious, with portions that were impressively generous. Between the two, the Honey Garlic Chicken stood out as my favorite, thanks to its perfectly balanced sweet and tangy flavor. The Chicken Teriyaki was also flavorful, with a thick and tasty teriyaki sauce. However, I found the sauce a bit heavy for my preference, so I'll be sure to request it on the side next time.

Yelp
Been here to pick up a few times and I can't say how happy I am to support this local business. Every time I pick up the person helping me (I assume the late owner's son) is super nice and kind. The portion size is huge and it lasts me at least two meals. Such a good deal! So happy to have them in my neighborhood

Yelp
My shrimp fried rice was so good. Service was fast and the staff were very friendly. They checked on us and asked how'd we enjoy the food. The restaurant is clean. Good amount of seating available for dining in.

Yelp
I may have accidentally forgotten to write any reviews for 2024 so far, but alas I thought what better place to start it off with none other than Seattle's most iconic dish, the chicken teriyaki! I've been meaning to try Rainier Teriyaki for YEARS now ever since finding out it was owned by Sam Kim's family, and after hearing about the tragedy with his late father (the previous owner of Rainier Teriyaki), I really wanted to support this family-owned business. Coming in, we were greeted by the new owner who I assumed was the brother of the previous late owner. He was very friendly and inviting, and helped me and my partner at the register. We both ordered the classic chicken teriyaki for dine-in. The price was very good, ranging around $13-14 per order. Once we sat down and waited for our order, we got the nicely plated chicken teriyaki and the owner brought some extra sauces we could use. I haven't had teriyaki in a long while, so after the first bite my mouth was filled with so much flavour and excitement! Honestly I barely ever eat teriyaki, but after this meal I think I'd have to come back more often. I even surprised myself by clearing that plate completely in such a short amount of time. Guess that is how you know I really enjoyed it! Rainier Teriyaki is definitely worth the hype that all these online food reviewers are giving them, and I would encourage you all to support this business by giving them a try. The service alone makes me want to come back, so I'll be there again soon!

Yelp
Probably my favorite teriyaki spot in Seattle! The chicken is super tender and flavorful. I usually get it in combo with the beef or the katsu. The katsu is super crispy and really delicious as well. The portions are always big and there's always leftovers which I love. Service is great as well! It also comes with a salad!
google avatar

Yelp
I have had this place on my list for a while, especially after Kenji Lopez reviewed it and gave it a solid recommendation. This is the best teriyaki I've had in a long time. The chicken was tender, juicy, and had some char. The rice was soft and not mushy. The salad was crunchy with a good dressing. The people were so nice too! I got thanked once by the lady at the front and the guy outside the door loading inventory. No online ordering so walk in or phone. Small parking lot available. I would be a repeat customer if I'm in the area. It is a steal for $12.99 for a chicken teriyaki so I'm fine even if prices went up because of the quality. Go support them! This business has had a hard time since the shooting last year of the owner.

Yelp
The food and customer service were excellent! I'm not sure if I've ever had a more kind person take my food order Loved the tofu teriyaki and veggie chow mein and I'm so happy they have vegetarian options! The crab Rangoon was also pretty good (not vegetarian lol). I also loved the sauces on the table. The sesame sauce and teriyaki sauce were soo good! There were lots of people getting takeout but the dining room wasn't too crowded.

Yelp
Excellently grilled chicken with creamy teriyaki sauace. Tried this place after a pickleball session and it hit the spot. Good value for the price. Service was fast and casual, with the family running the place checking in on you every so often with a smile! Would definitely come again if in the area.

Yelp
This place was delicious! Such a great find, I just wish we lived closer! The service was great, kind enjoyed and quick turnaround time. The restaurant was also very clean. I got the teriyaki chicken breast and it was honestly one of the most moist and tender chicken dishes I've ever had. The rice was cooked perfectly, the sauce was flavorful and not too sweet and the salad was crisp with a dressing I could've eaten plain. We'll definitely be back when we're in the area!

Mireyaa M.

Yelp
It's definitely a hole in the wall. The the food was very good and quick. Loved that the table had all the sauces you would need.

Sarah L.

Yelp
Rainier Teriyaki is our favorite spot for teriyaki. The food is consistently good and the portions are generous. Food is prepared quickly and the folks who run it are friendly. We typically get takeout, but enjoy eating there as well.

Yelp
Got the chicken teriyaki lunch special which was ~$1-2 cheaper than regular price. Chicken was had a nice prominent char flavor but the sauce may have been overdone as it was a tad salty for my comfort level. Some pieces of the chicken were nice and tender while other pieces leaned a little drier but non of them were super dry or chewy by any means. The plate comes with two scoops of white rice which, sometimes, restaurants overlook the rice and give either hard or wet rice, but this place got their rice down! Nice and fragrant and perfectly cooked to soak up the sauce from the teriyaki as well. The plate also came with a side salad of iceberg lettuce and some homemade dressing - super refreshing! Service was so friendly! It seemed like a family owned business. The workers kept checking in on us to make sure the food is good, asked us if we wanted water while we were eating, and overall excellent service - especially since this is more of an order and takeout or order-eat-go kind of place. The restaurant itself has a very asian homey vibe-id imagine it may feel a little crowded when it's busy, but we went around 2pm on a weekday and it wasn't particularly super busy.

Yelp
The food here is great, but I think the owners are even more amazing! Some of the kindest people I have ever met. They really restore your faith in humanity. There was a girl who had a meal and they told her she didn't have to pay. They shared with me that this girl goes there every day and doesn't pay. They said she always says she will but she doesn't. My sister offered to pay for the free meal they gave her and they were grateful but told us that it's okay and they are a restaurant and have plenty of food. Such generous people. Will definitely continue to support this restaurant.

Seth P.

Yelp
Just finished our crab rations, Broccoli Beef and Chicken Teriyaki. Wow. We stopped in on a guess while in the area and we're thankful we guessed right. The staff was supper courteous and friendly.

Huong L.

Yelp
This more of a 3.5 star review. Given the hype that this place been given I was slightly disappointed with the quality of food. The backstory of this place is really sad and heartwarming but I definitely have to be fair with the food experience. We came here during lunch time and got the teriyaki combo. It was done pretty quickly and there was a lot of people there. We got our food to go and ate in the car since I didn't want to deal with the crowd. The amount of food we got was pretty good size. The chicken was dry and tough though. The sauce helped it tremendously. The rice was also dry. I definitely brought the rest home and reheat it to make things softer People working are nice and there is a nice parking lot. Overall, I'm glad to try, but with it being out of the way, and food not super great, Im most likely won't be back

Yelp
Sincere family restaurant in 98118. This store has been a place of joy and hurt for the Kim family, who has been operating this for over a decade. After a tragedy, the shop is now run by the original owner's son. Food is reliable, large portioned, and tasty. Not authentic Korean but authentic teriyaki, American style. Parking in front, easily will feed 2 portions per box.

Joe P.

Yelp
Now they're handing out Gospel Tracts in addition to the Christian country music!! Last time I ever spend money here. I've been going here for nearly twenty years, but I'm not going to be preached at while I eat.

Eric B.

Yelp
This is good. The food is good all the times I go. Just simple service and food served nicely.

Yelp
There are like thousands of teriyaki places in Seattle but if you're ever in the South Seattle area, come check out Rainier Teriyaki! The thing that stands out for me here is the incredibly kind and friendly service! They have a huge menu offering all the usuals that a teriyaki restaurant has - from teriyaki to spicy teriyaki to chicken katsu to yakisoba - they do it all. The food is great - the teriyaki chicken is solid - perfectly cooked and perfectly flavored. I ordered a chicken teriyaki and a side order of gyoza to go and they packaged up everything so nicely. The salad was packed up in a separate container. It also came out really fast too! This isn't the closest teriyaki place that I live near, but I will definitely come back when I'm in the area! They even have their own parking lot so it's super convenient! They have bulgogi on their menu so I want to try that next. Also need to try their katsu. Thanks Rainier Teriyaki! Excellent food and excellent service!

Yelp
Generous portions, great flavor, convenient. Better than all other 'Must Try' places I've been. Neighborhood gem.

Yelp
Food is always fresh and delicious! We love their chicken katsu, chicken yakisoba and gyoza. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Was in there for a valentines dinner with a friend, food was okay, dont expect fresh vegetables in the fried rice, canned veggies sadly, took long , it was kind of busy. Reason for my post is the staff there was rude af. An older asain woman was berating loudly a delivery driver for picking up an order while the kitchen was behind on orders. No respect for anyone in the restaurant at all, the yelling from the manager ruined the dining experience for us. Felt 2nd hand embarrassment for the guy, the staff needs better work etiquette.
google avatar

Nikki N.

Yelp
Personally I don't love the food here. The teriyaki did not have a lot of sauce. Nothing stood out, all right teriyaki reminiscent of something I've had before. I also tried the honey garlic chicken and it was very dry/ overcooked. Very tough. My dad got the fish and chips which I tried and it was also very dry and overcooked. I will not be back. It seemed to be a popular place and the guy at the front was nice. All in all not good food.
google avatar

Yelp
my sister and i couldn't leave washington without getting teriyaki. we cleared this. delicious food, generous portions, friendly service. super clean bathroom and easy parking. we would definitely visit again
google avatar

Yelp
Came here while visiting town based on Kenji's visit and it did not disappoint. An insane amount of food for the price and it was fantastic. We had the spicy chicken, salmon, and gyoza and all were pretty perfect. Will come back when we're in town, without a doubt.
google avatar

Yelp
I saw a kanji Alt Lopez video on this spot and realized it's about 1/3rd of a mile from my front door. Went tonight and got a chickens d beef combo. Both very good and super reasonable price too. A new place to add to my take out rotation in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Krista S.

Yelp
This place was very hyped up before we visited. I think it might be driven by people wanting to build up their business after a horrible event (and I am so sorry for the family!) the food was OK, not my favorite teriyaki ever, but it was OK. The potstickers were deep fried, I liked them. The teriyaki sauce was unusual, thicker and sweeter than the usual. And the chicken was a bit dry, it's definitely fine, but some of the reviews are saying people are coming from miles away, and there are very many better places to eat good teriyaki in Seattle.
google avatar

Karen C.

Yelp
I love their Chicken Katsu, Chicken Teriyaki, and Honey Garlic Chicken! The staffs are kind and very respectful. Wait times are 10 minutes on a weekday. I hope they have some good refreshments too that they can sell and not just regular soft drinks. But overall, the food is good especially my Go-To Chicken Tonkatsu/Teriyaki/Honey Garlic! Would like to try more on their menu.

Woo S.

Yelp
The food is amazing. Their teriyaki chicken is wonderful and tasty and filling! Whenever o think of teriyaki chicken, I think of Rainier Teriyaki!

Yelp
One of the BEST teriyaki spots in Seattle, IMHO! Great portions, delicious food, and amazing customer service! The Kimbap is a must try!

Yelp
I love coming to this place! We originally came here because J. Kenji Lopez-Alt recommended it. Now, we're the ones who recommend it to people. The food options here are excellent and the portions are always huge. We usually get either the katsu or spicy teriyaki. Plus, the staff is accommodating and nice.

Antonio L.

Yelp
This was my first time having teriyaki in Washington. I'm from Arizona and it was 10 fold better for sure!!

Braden R.

Yelp
Great service and clean tables! We were greeted with a smile and had our food in less than 10 minutes!! Perfect portion size!

Yelp
Very nice and fast service. Teriyaki chicken is tender. Good food good value- will order chicken wings next visit- they have this on their SPECIALS MENU

Yelp
i've been going to this place for Chicken Katsu for years. it's always fresh, it's always good. The owners are some of the kindest & friendliest restaurant people i've ever met!

Yelp
This is the best teriyaki I've had in Seattle so far! It's a cute and homey little spot off of Rainier Ave. The interior felt very clean. The person working was kind and very attentive. The only downside, it's a little far from where we live but we'll be back for sure.
google avatar

Conor W.

Yelp
always a good meal always a good dish the family who runs it is very good and friendly. They're always glad to make recommendations. You can't go wrong with the chicken teriyaki dishes. I need the beef teriyaki dishes of the noodles. Salads are always yummy as the dumplings and all the sides are worth a few extra dollars.

Yelp
General Tso's chicken is just right. They will add spice if you like. Joo-Young is welcoming and makes good recommendations. I will give my business over and over again. Ambiance is relaxed and good A/C. Grateful to have good, quick, and quality food nearby. Try them!

Yelp
Best Teriyaki here in the city of Seattle! Great for takeout orders and a great staff! Look forward to coming back here again soon. They have all the staples, my favorite being the Beef and Chicken Teriyaki, with rice and salad.

Yelp
Came here looking for decent teriyaki, and left having one of the yummiest, most satisfying meals of my life. An exceptional value for how much food you get too. The chicken was PERFECT and I could literally eat this meal every day, forever. The service was quick, and the person behind the counter helping us out was so kind. Please patronize this business, you will not regret it.
