"A Financial District ramen spot where you’re likely to encounter a wait, but the chicken broth ramen will absolutely be worth it. This place is not, in fact, underground, but it is pretty small inside (hence the waits). It’s a good lunch stop in the neighborhood, and it’s less than 10 minutes away from Union Square, too, so next time you shatter your iPhone, you’ll have somewhere to wait and calm down from your fourth screen replacement in six months." - Will Kamensky

First, please try this restaurant for yourself since this review will be short, but no uplifting. I think it's overrated. The food isn't bad, but I don't agree with the hyped up review and it's possible that it's past its heyday. Having said that, the staff is super friendly and attentive. I'm only reviewing the quality of the food, which was primarily based on two bowls of noodles, so take my review with a grain of salt. It's an okay bowl of Ramen.

It was positively delicious. I just discovered ramen right before this trip (yeah I live in under a rock) so while I only have one other place to compare to, it was really tasty! The dinner was reasonably priced but I was a little shocked by the $32 pitcher of beer. It was a great experience though. Staff was friendly and the quality and freshness of the food was high

Ordered the Pork based Ramen. It was absolutely amazing and everything I could ever imagine a quality bowl of Ramen tasting like. Definitely recommend this place for travelers wanting to try some Ramen in SF area.

This is your go to consistent basic ramen shop. The bowls are decently put together and the ingredients harmonize to creat balanced flavor throughout. I've had the tan tan (sesame seed broth) the Miso Shoyu and the Tonkatsu here and all were good not great but would eat here again and again and be satisfied with it. The noodles are cooked medium firm they last through the soup with no mushy. It's priced a little high but in it's location that is to be expected. Service is great and makes everything easy. Tonkatsu broth does have the porky mouth feel but is light what is odd is the chashu that comes with the bowl is not as good as the kakuni style you can add on. I recommend getting the kakuni addition as it really brings the bowls together. Tan Tan ramen was as you would expect creamy nutty and overall decent. This Tan Tan is all chicken however no ground pork which I was told was because of customer feedback I guess that's reasonable. All in all ramen underground delivers on a good bowl of ramen with good broth and we'll cooked pork, if you like this spot the owner, Yoshuke Takahashi has a Japanese curry spot open in the Richmond.

This is my absolute favorite ramen restaurant in the city. This place has a lot of charm, and amazing food. The noodles are thicker, chewier, and fresher than almost every place I’ve been to, and the broth and toppings are excellent. If you are a fan of spicy food (which I am), make sure to order the habanero ramen because that’s the best thing on the menu. This place also serves Sapporo and sake. This place is small, so it might not be ideal for groups bigger than 4. There are seats at both the bar and there are some tables.

I had the tonkotsu ramen, paid extra $1.5 for the egg. The egg is half boiled, I can taste the mirin but overall the egg is salty. Noodles is too soft - guess it is over cooked, soup doesn’t have enough meaty favor. Ramen comes w one piece of pork (cha siu) and pork belly each. Cha siu is small (5cm diameter), taste ok, pork belly is tough to chew. Food is so-so, great customer service: waiters are pretty attentive even though it’s rush hour. Don’t think I will come back anymore. Note they charge extra $.35 for each credit card payment.

Service was very friendly. The food was very average. The spicy miso udon wasn’t very spicy, but it was pretty tasty. The vegetable udon was a little bland. The takoyaki can definitely use more toppings. It’s not a bad eatery, it’s just a little expensive for average food in a place with many other options nearby. Marinated egg is $1.50 extra

Ramen Underground is always crowded with people during lunch and dinner especially during fall and winter time. The one distinction is that it uses chicken broth instead of pork broth. The restaurant is small so you do expect a bit of wait unless you come at odd hours or order takeout. I actually really enjoy their spicy miso ramen. They give you plenty of pork or chicken as you choose, a half-boilded egg and bamboo shoots as well as corn. One bowl will for sure fill you up without needing to order an appetizer. Their spice sauce is also quite flavorful and has some serious kick. I am glad it is nearby my work so I can always go there for a quick bite in the cold!
